The following notes have been compiled more for the reason that the district is little known to the outside world for its gold production, than for the hope of giving valuable information. The district of Canutillo lies about 15 miles south of the city of Freirina (1at. 28' 50' S. long. 70" 75' W.), and contains nine principal veins, all within a radius of a mile; 50 or more claims have been located on these veins, and this paper refers chiefly to those belonging to the Anglo-Chilean Exploration Go., Ltd., on which the greater part of the development work has been done. In all probability the mines were first worked by the Incas, who, under Tupac Yupangui, captured the country as far south as the Mauli river, between the years 1430 and 1470, and imposed a yearly tribut,e of gold and copper, which was forwarded by carriers on foot to Cuzco, the Inca capital in Peru. In the year 1535, soon after the time of the Spanish conquest, the stories of these consignments, together with those of supposed precious stones, led Diego de Almargro with a band of 400 soldiers to explore as far south as the Incas had gone, in the hope of finding the source of the precious metal, which he believed to have come from some definite point instead of being, as was afterwards proved, the collection of innumerable districts scattered over the entire length of the country. The method of winning the gold used by the Incas or by the natives whom they forced to work seems to have consisted in removing the ore by hard-wood wedges driven by stone-hammers, while a human shoulder-blade worn along its rounded edge, found in one of the mines, had evidently done duty to its second owner as a scraper or shovel. MANY theories have been advanced to explain the phenomena of elastic and plastic deformation. The object of this report is to present a mechanism for deformation, not radically differing from existing theories, but embodying certain principles and concepts of these theories. This proposed theory cannot be the complete answer to the age-old problem of deformation but it is believed that it will be a step further in the proper direction. The plastic properties of solids have recently been reviewed by Seitz and Read.1 Zener2 has reviewed and correlated the existing work on the anelasticity of metals. With these and othersa3,4,5 present theories of deformation are well-known. Of the many theories now extant, those receiving most attention have been proffered by Griffith,6 Becker,7 Smekal,8 Polanyi,9 Orowan10 and Taylor.11Although differing quite widely in details, these theories are based more or less on a common principle of flaws or dislocations that exist in the crystal lattice. The effect of stress concentrations surrounding a flaw or crack has been treated most recently by Fisher and Hollomon.12 The various authors differ as to the exact nature of the flaws or dislocations, the causes of their appearance, or the manner in which they initiate slip. All of the theories agree that the number of dislocations increases with progressing deformation. It is universally agreed that the shearing process is not a simple gliding of ideally perfect atomic lattice planes. It is also agreed that the "macroscopic process of gliding, or slip, is brought about by the spreading of a large number of locally initiated "glide steps" through the whole crystal. The occurrence of these "glide steps" is closely related to the presence of some kind of deviations from the "ideal" lattice structure, even in the undeformed crystal. These deviations are overcome "one at a time," in a manner of speaking, due to some stress-concentrating effect." PROPOSED THEORY Many solids show a continuously increasing deformation if subjected to a constant load of suitable magnitude in an extended range of temperature for a sufficient time. This deformation, or flow, may be said to be due, in general, to the tendency of the atoms or molecules in an elastically stressed body to readjust themselves in such a way that if the deformation were kept constant, a release of stress would take place. If rupture does not occur, this process of relaxation causes the rate of flow to obtain a final constant value, as shown in the curve (Fig I) obtained by Taylor and Quinney.14 In. this state the release of stress by relaxation exactly counterbalances the increase due to the elastic strain on the test pieces. .

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indications that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious technological and environmental problems are associated with the development and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can he solved within a reasonable time framework Certainly our national well-being and continued survival as a free nation within the world community automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Although as ecological, economic, social and aesthetic elements of cost-benefits and human desires are more adequately understood, a more rational and reasonable public and governmental attitude hopefully will result.

DURING the past year, the Watertown Arsenal has been interested in the occluded gas and oxide content of certain ordnance steels in order to determine, if possible, whether some of the peculiar failures in their physical properties might not be traced to these causes. For the purpose of best accomplishing a study of this nature, it was decided to heat the various samples of steel in a vacuum for definite periods of time at high temperatures and carefully examine the quantity and composition of the gases evolved. By the use of a fused quartz tube fitted with a water-cooled, ground-glass stopper, it was possible to maintain a vacuum at a temperature of 1000° C. for 10 hr. without perceptible leakage being evidenced as measured by a McLeod gage. The silica tube was connected with an evacuating system so constructed that the volatilized gases could be removed from time to time and a low vacuum of 0.002 to 0.0010 mm. of mercury continuously maintained. At no time during the period of heating or in the removal of the gases did the evacuated system come in contact with rubber stoppers or any rubber connections, making contamination from such a source impossible. In other words, the only volatile products that could be obtained must necessarily have come from the steel itself or from the glass and fused quartz system or from the mercury used as a sealing agent. In the earlier experiments, the steel treated was in the form of turnings, but this practice was discarded because the weights of the turnings before and after being heated were widely inconsistent, even when taken from the same piece of steel. This discrepancy developed largely through variation in the amount of metal volatilized with the gases; this metal could always be seen in the form of a ring where it condensed in the cooler portion of the tube either in the amorphous or crystalline condition. Because of the frequency in occurrence and the variation in the manner of deposition, this material was roughly analyzed and found to consist for the most part of iron. Union Shaft fire, Virginia City, July 14, 1904; shaft-house, machinery, and shaft in part destroyed; loss estimated it $100,000; cause of fire stated as the careless throwing of a match in the rope-house. DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

DURING the early years of Homestake operations, shaft signaling from the cage tenders to the hoisting engineers was done by mechanical means. Small steel cables or jointed steel rods were suspended in the shaft compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' stations by means of bell cranks and steel wires. The system was simple and economical and served the purpose well until the mine reached a depth of 1000 ft., then the system became slow and cumbersome and required a considerable amount of muscular effort to operate it with much speed, because of the inertia of the heavy moving parts. The mechanical signaling was superseded by a simple electrical system consisting of a single pair of wires in steel conduit for each shaft compartment. In the shaft at each station a pull switch was connected to the wires. The switches were operated by means of bell cords, which extended from station to station. This electrical system was a great improvement over the mechanical one, but it had one serious drawback, which also applied to the older system; namely, the engineer did not know where a signal originated. Later on this signaling was improved to overcome this drawback, and to give the engineer a positive indication of a signal's origin. In this system a separate return wire from each pull switch is carried to an annunciator at the engineer's station, where it indicates the signal's origin. While the annunciator system used by Homestake is very safe and reliable, it has the inherent drawback of all wire-connected systems in that it is impossible to send a signal from a moving cage. A number of years ago Homestake became interested in the possibility of using some sort of radio transmission for shaft signaling. The company did much experimental work with purely radio signal transmission, but no practical way was discovered to use radio transmission in a mine shaft for signaling to or from a cage. Therefore, all efforts were directed to devising a practical way of using the hoisting rope as part of the circuit. It was realized that the return circuit from the rope would need to be through electrostatic coupling between the cage and the earth or ground sides of the shaft, because the guides would not always be wet enough to make possible good electrical contact between the cage and earth, therefore relatively high-frequency alternating current was chosen as the medium of transmission. Soon a practical system was developed for transmitting an electric current from a moving cage over an electric circuit of which the hoisting rope was a part. WHEN aluminum-flake powders are compacted and hot pressed and the resulting compacts are extruded or hot forged, a group of materials with unique properties is obtained. Not only do they exhibit high room-temperature strength of the order of some of the aluminum alloys, but they maintain this strength even after prolonged heat treatment at temperatures up to 900°F. Moreover, their strength decreases much less with increasing temperature than that of aluminum alloys of comparable room-temperature properties. Irmann,'" who discovered and first described this group of materials, which was called SAP, showed that the room-temperature mechanical properties of the extrusions are a function of the oxide content of the powders and therefore the oxide content of the extrusions. The higher the oxide content, the higher are their tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness, and the lower their ductility. Lyle" investigated the relationship between mechanical properties at elevated temperature and oxide content in the course of the development work of the Aluminum Co. of America on materials, called APMP, similar to those developed in Switzerland. He found that at 600 °F, just as at room temperatures, tensile strength and yield strength increase and elongation decreases with oxide content. A careful study of his data (Fig. 3, loc. cit.) shows, however, that the scatter is more pronounced than at room temperature. Gregory and Grant's data on the creep5 and stress-ruptureb roperties of the one commercial grade of the Swiss SAP and the various grades of APMP indicate that creep strength and stress to rupture also generally increase with increasing oxide .content. Ever since this new group of materials was discovered, attempts have been made to explain the mechanism by which they obtain their high room-temperature and particularly their elevated-temperature strength. In most of the attempts the new material was considered as a dispersion of aluminum oxide particles in a matrix of aluminum. Ir-mann, Von Zeerleder, and Rohner' applied a theory on dispersion strengthening developed by Rohners to the flake-powder extrusions. According to this theory the elastic limit S, of a dispersion would depend upon the average distance between the dispersed particles L according to the equation: 2 E ¦ a where E is the modulus of elasticity and a the distance between nearest neighbors in the lattice of the matrix material. The following pages discuss some problems connected with the manufacture of steel by the open-hearth process. The methods employed necessarily enter into the domain of what is called theory; but the results are eminently practical. The determination of the various losses of thermal power and the investigation into the chemical reactions in the bath, are important to every manufacturer. It will be understood that definite figures concerning one furnace and one system, will not apply to all other furnaces and systems; but it is hoped that methods are developed, which are capable of general application and which will shorten the labors of others. The gas-calculations contain nothing entirely novel; but certain methods appeared to be very convenient and they are here elaborated in order that others may have a model to follow. The determination of the loss of iron by weighing the slag and finding the percentage of iron therein, is probably unusual. If so, the fact is to be regretted, since this is the only way that an accurate result can be obtained. The common method of estimating the loss in open-hearth work, is to subtract the weight of metallic products from that of the materials charged. Nothing could be more unsatisfactory, inaccurate and meaningless. Pig-iron, steel, wrought-iron and ore are charged into the furnace; complicated chemical reactions occur; the sand of the pig-iron, the slag from the wrought-iron, the gangue of the ore, all rise to the top ; the silicon, manganese and carbon burn and leave the metal; some of the iron oxidizes and goes into the slag; some of the ore is reduced and gives up metallic iron ; the recarbonizer is added, the mission of which is to waste itself; in the pouring of the steel, pit-scrap is made in the ladles, around the moulds and under the spout; the errors in weighing the products join hands to make accuracy impossible; and then the " loss" is determined by diffrence !

This paper describes a computerized simulation system developed by KETRON, Inc., in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines. The system is designed for use by mine managers and engineers rather than computer specialists and allows the novice user to arbitrarily create room-and-pillar mine plans, with the computer illustrating the simulation of face activities on a video screen. Extensive visibility of the simulation is provided by visual display of the machine elements and their movement in the section to accommodate the extraction, roof control, place changing, and haulage operations. Performance statistics are also generated to analyze the operations. Both conventional and continuous mining methods can be simulated. In addition to simulating arbitrary scenarios, the system can also be used to display actual time-studied operations and maintain a file of these activities. Practical applications and case studies are provided in the paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the system. The system is designed to operate on a desk-top mini computer and is currently installed on a Hewlett-Packard 9854B system with 450 K bytes of memory.

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

THE gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transforma-tion rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data, on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2 since then several important papers have appeared. Our present, knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-cen-tered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-Centered alpha lattices in tampered martensite. OF all the metals that have from time to time been called the "Wonder Metal," mercury, often called quicksilver, is probably the most deserving of this designation. A wonder metal it must have been to those workers of an earlier day who named it after that Latin god of commerce and gain, characterized as the fleet messenger of the gods and the conductor of souls to the lower world. The word mercury has been used to indicate a carrier of tidings, a bearer of news, a nimble or clever person, a hawker, and a skillful thief. All of these attributes, and more, are recognizable in this metal, the technical terminology of which is "Hydragyrum," meaning water-silver, and from which the chemical symbol "Hg" is derived. Fickle in its occurrence in nature, simple in its metallurgy, illusive in captivity, it serves man in life or death, in war or peace, in commerce, science and arts, in mining, agriculture, and forestry with a versatility found in no other element.

Perhaps no other mineral commodity in this volume has as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Recent. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1981 about 644 million tons were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses, with emphasis on developments since 1960. In doing so we borrowed extensively from our report on the applied geology of limestone and dolomite (Rooney and Carr, 1971). The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired down in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information. Geology Mineralogy The principal carbonate rocks used by industry are limestone and dolomite. Limestones are sedimentary rocks composed mostly of the mineral calcite (CaCO3) and dolomites are sedimentary rocks composed mostly of the mineral dolomite (CaCO3 • MgCO3). Aragonite (CaCO3), which has the same chemical composition as calcite but a different crystal structure, is economically important only in modern deposits, such as oyster shells and oolites. Aragonite is metastable and alters to calcite in time. Some other carbonate minerals, notably siderite (FeCO3), ankerite (Ca2MgFe (CO3)4), and magnesite (MgCO3), are commonly found associated with limestones and dolomites but generally in minor amounts. THE technique of concentrating valuable minerals from lean ores by flotation depends upon the creation of a finite contact angle at the three-phase contact, mineral-water-air. If the mineral is completely wetted by the water phase, contact angle zero, there is no tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral. However, when the contact angle is finite, the surface free energy of the system, water-air bubble-mineral particle, can be diminished by contact between the bubble and the particle, and if not too heavy the mineral will be levitated in the froth. With a few exceptions, all clean minerals are completely wetted by pure water. Thus the art of flotation consists in adding substances to the water to make a finite contact angle with the mineral to be floated, but to leave the other minerals with a zero contact angle. The contact angle concept and experimental measurements of contact angles have played important roles in flotation research for several decades.'-" Nevertheless, there remain unanswered some basic questions as to the scientific significance of the contact angle and the nature of the processes by which flotation reagents affect contact angles. The contact angle is a complex quantity because the properties of three different phases, or rather of three different interfaces, control its magnitude. Considering the interfaces close to the region of ternary contact to be plane, the relation among the contact angle and the three binary interfacial tensions is easily derived. The condition for equilibrium among the three surface tensions, Fig. 1, or the requirement of minimum total surface free energy leads to Young's equation, Eq. I: ysa — ysl = yLA cos 0 [1] According to this equation, the contact angle has one well-defined value. Actually it is found in many experiments that the value of the contact angle depends on whether the air is replacing liquid over the solid (receding angle) or the liquid is replacing air (advancing angle). The receding angle is always the smaller of the two.4 Two explanations have been offered for this experimental fact. According to some investigators,5-8 roughness of the surface causes apparent contact angles that are different for the receding and the advancing cases although the actual local contact angle may be completely determined by Eq. 1. The other explanation involves the hypothesis that the solid-air interface after the liquid has just receded is different from the same interface when no liquid has previously covered it.1,4 Adsorption of constituents of the air or liquid might play a role here. In this discussion the difference between advancing and receding contact angle will be neglected and plane surfaces where Eq. 1 describes the situation will be considered. But there is still a fundamental obstacle to the application of Young's equation. The surface tension of the liquid (rla) can easily be determined, but the two surface tensions of the solid (rsa and ySL) cannot be measured directly. Eq. 1, however, is not without value. By contact angle measurements it is possible to establish how ysl — ysl varies with the addition of solutes to the liquid phase. Also, Eq. 1 affords a convenient starting point for calculating net forces and energy changes involved in the process of bubble-particle attachment.1,2 . If for the moment surface tension of the liquid (yLa) is considered a constant, an increase in ysa — ysL, will tend to decrease the contact angle. A decrease in ySA — ysl, corresponds to an increase of the contact angle. In cases where ySA — ySL > yLa the contact angle is zero; it will only reach finite values when ysa — ysa has been decreased below YLA. Thus on the basis of Young's equation and contact angle measurements alone, it can be learned how flotation reagents affect the difference Ysa — ysl, but no conclusions can be drawn as to the effects of reagents on the individual surface tensions ysa, and ysL, not even as to signs or directions of the surface tension changes resulting from reagent additions. ON the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly condemned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings. HISTORY AND PRODUCTION Little interest was evidenced in this district until the building of the railway in 1893 provided easy access and the discovery of the Ymir mine [t] in 1896 attracted attention. As a result, the Ymir Yankee Girl group of claims was staked in October 1899. In 1907, an American syndicate took over the property and subsequently extended the 50-ft. drift and opened the present 400 and 540-ft. levels. In 1908, the Syndicate, without recording any shipments in the meantime, dropped its lease, which was taken up by H. L. Rogers, who bonded the Yankee Girl group. Rogers shipped 2622 tons of ore, mainly from the uppermost stope in the mine, which is reported to have yielded

Nowhere can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, and as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone. Important Factors The several important factors that have been responsible for this change are : 1. Shrinkage of the iron business in the South. 2. Increased labor cost. 3. The development of the South, with an industrial trend, without a substantial increase of its own iron-consuming market. 4. Increased freight rates, which has narrowed the market that might be reached from this district. 5. Depletion of the better grades of raw materials, both ore and coal. With either sulfonate or oleate as collector, quartz responds to flotation with moderate additions of calcium only at moderately high pH, where some portion of the activator has hydrolyzed to caOH+ . Calculations of the concentrations of various ionic and precipitated species of calcium and collectors suggest that the products of [(CaOH+) (RSO3)] and [(CaOH+)(01-)] determine whether flotation is obtained under specific conditions. Ion products on the order of 10-12 were calculated for both the sulfonate and oleate systems. The activating effect of calcium ion in nonmetallic flotation systems is of considerable interest because of the normal presence of calcium in natural water. As a result, this phenomenon has received quite some attention in the past. Kraeber and Boppel1 showed that quartz could be activated by calcium above pH 10 with sulfonate as collector. The feasibility of selectively separating quartz from hematite with calcium activation at relatively high pH was demonstrated by Clemmer, Clemmons, Rampacek, Williams, and stacy.2 Cooke and Digre3 showed with a bubble pick-up method that the minimum quantity of calcium ion required as activator for complete pick-up of particles occurs at pH 11.5 for an addition of 20 mg per liter sodium oleate. They also showed that larger additions of calcium (10-fold increase per unit decrease of pH) must be added for complete bubble pick-up as the pH is reduced. Schuhmann and Prakash,4 using a vacuum flotation technique, found that quartz could be floated with moderate additions of calcium chloride and oleic acid at neutral pH, providing the metal ion was present in stoichiometric excess over the quantity needed to form the normal soap with oleic acid. They also reported that calcium will function as an activator only in basic media. More recently, Eigeles and volova5 have shown that essentially complete flotation of quartz is obtained with 6 x 10-4 mole per liter calcium chloride and 1.7 x 10-5 mole per liter sodium oleate at pH 11.6. while no flotation is obtained at about pH 10.9 and below. The importance of adsorption of activator and collector at the air-liquid interface is also demonstrated in these systems. The important role that metal ion hydrolysis assumes in quartz activation systems was also demonstrated recently.6-8 A detailed investigation of metal activation in sulfonate flotation of quartz was undertaken in one system7 and yielded a number of interesting and important observations. Quantification of the data of this system7 to the extent desired was not possible, though, because certain species could neither be ignored nor accounted for accurately. These difficulties can be circumvented when calcium is involved as activator. This detailed analysis was undertaken to obtain a more quantitative explanation of calcium and metal ion activation in quartz flotation. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate9 mol wt 450, and pure potassium oleate were used as collectors. All other reagents used were reagent grade in quality, i.e., n-amyl alcohol as frother, KOH for pH adjustment, and calcium chloride. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the investigation. Quartz was prepared by leaching the sized sample (48 x 150 mesh) with HC1 until no iron could be detected in the leach liquor. The experimental equipment and procedure were the same as that described previously.6,10 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS As the presence of precipitates was noted in all of the systems to which ca++ and collector were added, experiments were undertaken to determine the solubility products of calcium sulfonate and calcium oleate using a nephelometer. With this technique, collector is titrated into a known solution, which in this case was 5 x 10-5 mole per liter CaCl2 at pH 5.5. Aluminum killed low carbon steel, § which is now used extensively for severe deep drawing or other difficult forming operations, is unusual in that its grain structure, after cold reduction and box annealing in accordance with conventional continuous sheet or strip mill practice, often is elongated, although at times it is equiaxed. Since this unusual structure has been found superior for many, but not all, severe forming operations, recrystallization of the steel, both at constant temperature and on continuous heating, was investigated and compared with that of rimmed steel in the hope that something might be learned about the mechanism of, and the factors controlling, the formation of such elongated grains. In this structure, the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise direction of the strip and transverse to this direction, even though nearly all of the extension in both hot and cold rolling is in the lengthwise direction. The grains are thus roughly pancake-shaped, being longer and wider than they are thick, as observed also by Burns and McCabe,1 and as illustrated by the typical structures shown in Fig 1. Fig la, representing a conventional longitudinal section, shows the length and thickness of the grains, whereas Fig Ib shows their length and width as seen by examining a section parallel to the sheet surface. Both illustrate the very irregular grain boundaries usually associated with the elongated grain shape. A finer equiaxed grain structure in this same grade is shown in Fig Ic. Either the elongated or the equiaxed structure may be present in the annealed product, and in rare instances the two types may coexist in a single specimen, as shown in Fig 1 d. Isothermal Recrystalliza-tion of Rimmed and Alamimum Killed Steel An aluminum killed steel known to have an elongated grain structure after conventional processing (Steel B, Table l), was selected for the initial recrystallization studies; for comparison, a rimmed steel, A in Table 1, was used. Samples of each in the form of hot rolled strip 0.075 and 0.095 in. thick, respectively, were cold rolled on a small laboratory mill in steps of about 0.010 in. per pass to obtain total reductions of 40 and 60 pct. Small pieces of the cold reduced strip were heated in lead at selected constant temperatures for one of several periods of time, then cooled in air. Rate of heating in the lead was, of course, very fast. Hardness of the cooled specimen was measured and a longitudinal section examined metallographically. Isothermal recrystallization curves for these two steels at 1050°F, based on hardness of the air cooled specimens, are shown in Fig 2 in which the amount of recrystallization corresponding to each plotted point is indicated. The marked difference in the behavior of these two types of steel is evident. After a corresponding amount of cold reduction, the rimmed steel recrys-tallizes in a much shorter time than the killed steel and the shape of its recrystallization curve, (plotted on a logarithmic time scale), is very different. The curve for rimmed steel indicates that recrystallization is analogous to isothermal transformation of aus-i.enite in that it proceeds at a progressively faster rate up to some 50 pct recrystallization, then at an increasingly slower rate. THIS paper is a brief description of the design and equipment of a new coal mine in southern Illinois, which has many features not common practice in shaft coal mining and which is laid out and equipped for such unusually large capacity that it promises soon to become one of the largest mining operations of its kind. Shaft sinking for the mine, New Orient, was commenced in May, 1921, by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In October, 1924, the plant was practically completed and was producing over 6000 tons of coal per day. There is good prospect that within a few years, when the mine is fully developed and manned, the output will attain a daily rate of 12,000 tons. The coal seam at New Orient lies approximately horizontal, about 500 ft. below the surface, and may be said to run from 9 to 12 ft. in thickness. The tendency in Franklin County has been toward large mining units (5000 to 6000 tons per day) with great care being given to protection against fire and explosion hazards, and usually with quite elaborate surface plants permitting careful preparation of the coal into graded sizes comparable with those made in the anthracite region. The field is unionized, with uniform conditions of wages for various classes of work, hours, etc., and the Illinois mining laws are quite specific with regard to fireproofing and safety measures. These conditions make it difficult for any but well-equipped and well-operated mines to meet the competition of the numerous fine properties of which this county can justly be proud. The coal company's property was already developed on the western side by the Orient. mine-a much visited and written about operation (with which many of you are possibly familiar through the Department of Mines' film "The Story of Coal ") which until recently held the 8-hr. production record with 8218 tons and usually ran quite consistently with production of slightly over 6000 tons per day. Experience at Orient was naturally one of the greatest influences in determining the location and character of the New Orient.
