THE physical properties of uranium have been reviewed by Katz and Rabinowitch.1 Their review includes thermal conductivity data for ternperatures above 375°K. Recently, Mendelssohn and Rosenberg' have published data on the thermal conductivity of uranium from 2" to 20°K. Our measuremerits indicate the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity in the temperature interval from 20" to 300°K. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured on the same sample. The material studied was normal uranium which had been heated at 700°C in a lead bath for 10 min and then quenched in a water bath held at 50°C. From this material a rod M in. in diameter and 2 1/2 in. long was machined. Two 0.040 in. holes were drilled into the rod 1 3/4 in. apart. Copper-constantan thermocouples for temperature and potential measurements were soldered to copper pins which were pressed tightly into these holes. Details of the equipment and experimental techniques used in making the measurements have been described elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows micrographs of a section of the sample studied. Fig. la was taken with unpolarized light and shows impurity inclusions, probably uranium carbide. Fig. lb, showing the same field, was taken with polarized light and gives some indication of the grain size and twinning within the grains. THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions, Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illus-trate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

THE investigations of Crussard,' of Guinier and Tennevin,' and of Dunn and Daniels," indicate that the subgrains formed in a cold worked and annealed metal are capable of growing at each other's expense during annealing, if the temperature of annealing is sufficiently high and the time is long enough. The results of Dunn and Daniels are particularly convincing in showing that subgrain growth is essentially the result of the free surface energy associated with the subboundaries. In subgrain growth, as in ordinary grain growth, energy is gained as a result of the decrease in total subboundary surface area per unit volume. Recently, Wood and Scrutton4 found that the rate of subgrain growth upon annealing increased very considerably, if simultaneously a creep strain was applied to the specimen at a low strain rate. Working with 99.98 pct pure fine-grained aluminum, these investigators found that the continuous X-ray diffraction back-reflection rings of material strained at room temperature remained continuous after heating for ten days at 250 °C. However, when heated at the same temperature under a stress of 1000 psi even for only three days, the formerly continuous X-ray diffraction rings broke up into numerous dots, which were fairly clearly separated from each other. The continuous X-ray diffraction rings were interpreted as indications of a very small subgrain size, not resolved by the X-ray diffraction method used. The breaking up of the continuous X-ray diffraction ring during annealing under stress was taken as an indication of a great increase in subgrain size, so that the individual subgrains could then be resolved. The effect of simultaneous strain at a low strain rate in accelerating subgrain growth, discovered by Wood and Scrutton and designated by them as "cell growth," is of fundamental importance. The experiments described in this note were carried out in order to confirm Wood and Scrutton's results by direct metallographic observation. Also, information was sought as to the minimum creep strain necessary to produce this effect. A fine grained high purity aluminum strip was prepared by alternate 33 pct rolling and annealing treatments for 1 hr at 350°C. Specimens cut from this strip were subjected to a relatively fast creep strain of 7.2 pct in 3.5 min at 300°C under a constant load initially corresponding to 1185 psi. The subgrains set up were large enough (about 0.015 to 0.03 mm) to be clearly observed (Fig. 1) at X200 magnification with polarized light, after electrolytic polishing and anodic etching, producing a fine oxide film." The corresponding X-ray diffraction pattern is shown in Fig. la. After the fast creep strain treatment a portion of the specimen was subjected to a creep strain of 8.3 pct in 44 hr at 350°C under a constant load initially corresponding to 320 psi. Another portion, annealed under the same conditions, but not strained, served as control specimen. The subgrain size of a typical area of the specimen annealed under strain and of the one annealed without strain is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 (X-ray diffraction patterns, Figs. 2a and 3a). Annealing without strain produced clearly observable subgrain growth (subgrain size: about 0.03 to 0.05 mm). The effect of simultaneous strain was to increase greatly the rate of subgrain growth (resulting in a subgrain size of approximately 0.05 to 0.13 mm), in accordance with Wood and Scrutton. In another experiment, the effect of the amount of simultaneous strain was studied. The initial subgrain structure was set up by fast creep, as described previously. The specimen was then heated at 350 °C under a constant load initially corresponding to 320 psi, as above, for 2.2 hr (0.24 pct strain), and 8.8 hr (0.58 pct strain). Comparison with the corresponding unstrained control specimens by means of X-ray diffraction showed that 0.58 pct strain definitely had an effect, but the effect of 0.24 pct strain was doubtful.

IT seems strange that a theory so devoid of value in its application to our practical problems should attract such widespread acclaim. This appears still more remarkable when one considers the foundation on which it is built. The criticism naturally suggested is as follows: First; the special theory of relativity is based on an assumption which is counter to the fundamental conception of relative motion. Second; the theory claims only a slight modification of Newtonian mechanics-a modification so minute that, even if true, it would have no practical value in its application to any visible occurrence here on earth.

With the rapid acceleration of the cost of shovel dippers and major standard shovel clipper rebuild components, maintenance management at Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Bingham Canyon mine initiated a dipper maintenance and rebuild program. The program focused on extending the service life of the shovel dipper, reducing field labor in maintaining dippers, and lowering shovel dipper rebuild costs. While comprehensive evaluation of the program is still underway, preliminary benefits of the program indicate: •Reduced field ,gelding for shovel dipper field maintenance, •Fewer dipper rebuild units entering the shop, and •Reduced dipper rebuild costs per unit.

ANY discussion of State-supported schools of mining and A metallurgy needs to be prefaced by a definition, since the first school to offer a mining curriculum, the Pennsylvania Polytechnic College, was established by a grant from the State. But, so far as can be determined, it received no further State support. It would be tiresome to go into precise details,. and it will be enough to stipulate that by State schools are meant those which derive their main financial support from regular appropriations made by a State legislature. The University of Michigan was the first of these to offer a mineral industry curriculum; its story, as well as those of Wisconsin and Illinois, has been related in the preceding chapter.* Arranging the others in chronological order involves making a decision as to what weight to attach to plans for giving instruction, as contrasted with its , effective initiation. This may appropriately be illustrated by the history of mineral industry education in California. California Among those who came to California in 1849 and the following years were many New Englanders who had a keen interest in education. Some of them, mostly Congregationalists and Presbyterians, sought to establish a school of higher education around San Francisco Bay and eventually succeeded in opening the "Scientific and Classical School at Contra Costa' in Oakland, at Broadway and 5th St., on June 20, 1853. This prospered so well that it was chartered by the State as the "College of California" on April, 13, 1855. WHAT are the opportunities for the services of engineers in the coal mines? The best answer perhaps can be made by detailing the present lines of development in the bituminous coal mining regions. They are just at the beginning of a period that can be conservatively termed revolutionary. A few glimpses of new possibilities in economic mining that will reduce the cost of bituminous coal at the mines by at least one half have convinced almost everyone that a change must shortly come about. The cost of housing has become such a burden, especially in mountainous regions, that development which demands the hiring of more men and constructing more houses would not be profitable. The introduction of mechanical aids to mining, transportation and dumping suggests a way of obtaining a large tonnage with the same or a smaller number of men with no further house construction. At the same time the restriction of immigration has made it increasingly difficult to obtain men inured to hard labor. Modern civilization is not productive of muscular energy and at the same time it provides men who are not indisposed to the use of the mental effort required to direct the physical forces now available for the replacement of such energy.

At the session of the Bethlehem, Pa., meeting of the Institute, held in the Durham Cave, at Durham Furnace, on the afternoon of May 20, 1886, I exhibited some specimens of a fibrous white efflorescence which had exuded from the pig-iron at that time being made at Durham Furnace. As some of the members expressed an interest in the matter, I promised to have complete analyses made, and to report the result in a paper to the Institute. The presentation of the paper has been long delayed, but there appears to be no other literature on this subject, and it may still be of interest. The efflorescence was found to exude from the pig-iron where the pigs were broken hot from the sow; the entire fracture of both pigs and sow often being entirely coated with this material. Sometimes there was only a white surface, as if the ends had been daubed with white paint; but in most cases the material was found in small globules and in thin sheets. If the iron had been broken a little too hot, arid in consequence had " bled " on separating from the sow, some of the efflorescence would be found deposited 011 the iron-drippings, and on the incrustations of sand in the pig-bed. The globules were irregular in shape, some of them equivalent in mass to spheres three-eighths of an inch in diameter, but most of them much smaller. The thin sheets were also irregular in shape, and, although they were not porous, were often riot thicker than a spider-web. Some of them were produced by the peeling-off' of the thin coating on the pigs above referred to. They were opalescent in appearance, and some of them had an area equivalent to two square inches; but the largest pieces would fall apart in handling. Several ounces of the efflorescence could often be picked up, or scraped off the pigs, after each cast.

When the writer first began his search for the early history of coal he was amazed at the paucity of information in literature about it, and while after six years many of the reasons for such a scarcity are understood, there are still many cases, even within the last two centuries, when one who can appreciate the tremendous part coal has played in the development of modern times, finds it hard to realize how little attention was paid to this material in those early clays. Occasionally a traveller or observer is found who foresaw how valuable coal was to be when industries were developed, but these were few and to most of those recording its occurrence it was just another mineral. George Washington was farsighted in his view of the development of this country and the need for means of transportation across the mountain barrier, but it was at least sixteen years after he must first have known of coal before he made any reference to it in his journals. He did, however, knowingly or not, select some valuable coal properties in the lands lie obtained in the West. This was then almost entirely an agricultural country, and what industries there were found a great abundance of wood fuel within easy access, there were no steam plants, and all iron was made with charcoal; in fact, the "captive mines" of the iron industry then were large timber "plantations," and when these were exhausted the furnace usually was abandoned and another one built elsewhere, as transportation of charcoal was quite expensive. Along the seaboard the cities and industries began to import coal from England and Nova Scotia early in the eighteenth century, but until the war of the Revolution began the total quantity of coal used yearly in this continent did not exceed nine thousand tons. In 1800 only two places, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia, were using coal to any extent for domestic purposes and it was much later. than this that the amount of coal used in Philadelphia, New fork, and Boston exceeded that of wood. Practically all of the early travellers and writers mentioning coal are noted in the following pages. Several Englishmen who were evidently familiar with its use and value at home, mention its presence as being of great future promise to the young nation, but to nearly all it was more or less of a curiosity and the smoke caused by its use an abomination, and it

SECONDARY hardening in tempering has long been recognized as a typical characteristic of steels containing large amounts of carbide-forming alloys. These steels, when quenched and tempered, tend to soften somewhat after tempering at low temperatures, and to reharden at intermediate tempering temperatures before finally softening to low hardness. This behavior in tempering has been studied by many investigators, chiefly with respect to the secondary hardening of high-speed steels. The initial softening has usually been ascribed to decomposition of martensite and growth of iron carbide particles. The secondary hardening has been explained by formation of fresh martensite from residual austenite, formation of very fine alloy carbide particles and by precipitation hardening of metallic compounds in the ferritic matrix. However, factors derived for the calculation of tempered hardness in low-alloy steels1 indicated only a tendency toward retarded softening rather than a discontinuous rehardening. A study was, therefore, made to determine whether fresh martensite from residual austenite and precipitation hardening are essential to rehardening and the degree to which tempered martensite could be rehardened by precipitation of alloy carbides. The mechanism of carbide rehardening was also investigated to determine the nature of the process. The causes of secondary hardening in high-speed steel have received serious consideration for about thirty years. Among the earlier workers Bain and Jeffries2 in 1923 recognized residual austenite as a significant factor, but in addition, emphasized the effect of the formation of alloy carbide particles of "critical" size. They conceived that freshly quenched martensite forms low-alloy iron carbide at low tempering temperatures; with further tempering the iron carbide is then modified by alloying elements that can diffuse most readily at intermediate temperatures (850°F); and that the iron carbides grow in size by coalescence so that the steel tends to lose hardness. At higher tempering temperatures carbide stability rather than alloy availability becomes the controlling influence and in high-speed steel "iron-tungsten carbide is the most stable one and forms to the elimination of the earlier formed carbides. . . . The iron-tungsten carbide particles reach approximately the size for critical dispersion after a short reheat at 1100°F." This concept, the formation of alloy carbide nuclei, redissolving of the iron carbide, and diffusion of carbon to the alloy carbide, was restated for vanadium steel in 1932 by Houdremont, Bennek, and Schrader.3 Subsequent studies have confirmed that iron carbide changes to alloy carbide at 1000 to 1100°F, but the mechanism of the process has received little consideration .

The hydrostatic steel mine shaft liner (HSL) Provides a permanent wall lining for drilled shafts. It is watertight and suitable for bad ground conditions. After a shaft has been drilled to its full depth, the HSL is lowered into it and secured in place with cement grout. The liner consists of a cylindrical steel shell usually reinforced with exterior stiffening rings. The shell is basically designed for compressive strength and the rings are provided to give the shell added resistance to buckling. There are no published standards for the correct procedures to design an HSL. This paper gives a method that appears logical. A design solution can be complex with increased opportunity for error. This paper presents simple formulas to produce sufficient accuracy for construction design. Two new concepts are presented, referred to as transition pressure and critical pressure. An example demonstrates use of the formulas and concepts presented. To facilitate comprehension and use of the formulas, Greek letters are avoided and most of the English alphabet symbols used refer by association to their definitions. An appendix shows derivation of the formulas.

GRaphitization phenomena occurring in solid cast iron have principally been studied from the angle of the reactions taking place during annealing of white castings in the manufacturing of malleable iron. The selected bibliography at the end of this paper presents the high spots of the published information in this field. Graph-itization of gray iron upon reheating has received much less attention, primarily because only on rare occasions is this material subjected to any kind of industrial heat-treating. Moreovcr, articles made from gray iron are seldom used commercially at temperatures when any graphitization can take place. When used in such conditions, it is assumed that the articles can be replaced at frequent intervals, which can be afforded because of the low cost of gray iron. However, there is at least one commercial process in which articles made from gray iron, during their manufacturing processing, are subjectcd to rather high temperatures; that is, manufacturing of cast-iron enamelware, which is glazed at about 1600° to 1700°F. (870' to 930°C.) From practical experience, it has been found that one of the convenient and economical compositions of gray iron suitable for enameling is, in round figures, as follows: Si, 2.50 per cent; Mn, 0.35; S, 0.07; P, 0.80; T.C., 3.35; C.C., 0.70. Since this iron usually is cast into thin-walled sections, the percentage of com- bined carbon in it is relatively high. Upon heating in the enameling furnaces, this combined carbon graphitizes, which causes permanent dimensional changes of the articles. Obviously, from practical considerations, it is desirable to maintain these dimensional changes as constant as possible. In the course of experimentation with this iron, two series of experimental heats were prepared in which the manganese to sulphur ratio of the standard cupola metal was offset by ladle additions of: (I) progressively larger amounts of sulphur, and (2) progressively larger amounts of manganese. Each one of these ladle charges was cast into experimental plates 8 by 4 in. and about 5/16 in. thick. All told, 13 ladle charges were thus treated. All of them are listed in Table I, together with their chemical analyses. It may be noted that the manganese to sulphur ratio in these samples ranges between 1.2 and 30.2. Every one of these compositions was subjected to thermal allalysis, using an automatic, self-recording differential dila-tometer. The specimens used in this instrument are 50 mm. long and 4 mm. in diameter. During the dilatometer cycle they are kept under a vacuum of about 3 microns. Each one of them was subjected to a thermal cycle by heating it to I830°F. (1000°C.) in 3 hr. and cooling to room temperaturc in 5 hr. Figs. I, 2 and 3 present three automatically recorded dilatometer curves for irons: Serial No. I (normal composition), Serial No. 6 (high sulphur), and Serial No. 13 (high manganese). THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd:: (1) The Sullivan concentrator, Chapman, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (customs) concen-trator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Flotation equip-ment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sul-livan concentrator. Successful differential flotation of Sullivan ore com-menced in the spring of 1920, in the pilot concentrator at Trail. During 1920, 193,804 tons were treated by this process. This operation continued without interrup-tion and with steady growth. For the first 7 months of . 1923, which concluded the pilot plant operation, ap-proximately 1100 tons were treated daily. I believe the Sunnyside plant of the United States Smelting &. Refining Co. was the only successful and large scale operation practising differential flotation prior to 1920. in North America. The Sullivan ore, because of its high iron content, was quite a different problem from that at Sunnyside. The entire tonnage of Sullivan ore had to be separated into three sulfide concentrate products-lead concentrate, zinc concentrate and iron concentrate. The choice and arrangement of equipment, and the original flow sheet for the Sullivan concentrator were controlled by the results of the exhaustive pilot mill test. These covered a continuous period of 3 1/2 years and involved the treatment of 1,076,368 tons of Sullivan ore. Satisfactory recoveries are made from feed; 11.0 per cent lead and 7.5 per cent zinc in the form of lead concentrate containing 69 per cent lead, 4.5 per cent zinc, and zinc concentrate containing 3.0 per cent lead and 49 per cent zinc. (The pure zinc mineral in Sulli-van ore is marmatite, 'containing approximately 54.5 per cent zinc and 10 per cent iron. It is apparent, there-fore, that 49 percent concentrate is high grade for this particular ore.)
