Since their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high bearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of bearings made from tin-base or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in bearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on bearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements. Recent investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebertl,‡ Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses. Metallographic Investigation A briquette of molybdenum powder when heated in a carburizing atmosphere at 1500" to 1600" C. for several hours develops the carbon-rich layer shown in Fig. 1. The carburization was accomplished by placing the briquette in a carbon tube, which was heated in the hydrogen atmosphere of an alundum muffle wound with tungsten resistor. While the macrostructure indicates two distinct shells, and suggests the possibility of two carbon-rich phases, no evidence of this condition could be detected by the microscope, which revealed but one high-carbon constituent. This carbide forms next to the molybdenum as a relatively dense, light-colored zone (Fig. 2) which passes abruptly into an outer layer of spongy texture. As will be noted later, only one intermediate phase was observed in the X-ray photograms prepared of different locations in the carburized zone. In the oil-refining industry, steel comprises by far the greatest proportion of the materials used in construction work, but with an enormous number of alloy steels and nonferrous alloys available, and a greater knowledge of their properties and corrosion resistance, a substitution first in the "hot spots" and then in locations of moderately severe corrosive conditions will be made as the greater expense can be justified. In new construction work, advantage is taken of the experience already gained and appropriate materials used, whether for high temperatures and pressures demanding additional strength or for corrosive conditions. The locations, however, where equipment in operation constantly requires replacement will soon become evident, as will the necessity for replacement in more resistant materials, if considerable down-time is to be avoided. In what direction and how far to go in the matter of alloys then becomes a question of the highest importance. Obviously, any replacement with more costly material must be justified economically by the promise of longer life, thereby saving both material and installation costs besides the reduction of loss of production. Where the equipment is overcapacity and a regular schedule of cleaning periods is in force, the last item frequently must be ruled out and justification made on the basis of the first two only. Installation of material that will outlast the remainder of the equipment and have no recovery value must also be avoided; this is particularly important in temporary construction or in old equipment that will soon become obsolete. Test Methods Either one of two methods or a combination of both, in the absence of reliable data in similar services, may be adopted to determine to what extent replacement with other, and perhaps more expensive, materials is justified. A unit may be constructed incorporating different metals or alloys so that comparative service may be obtained under the same service conditions; this has been applied in many instances, such as condenser and tank construction, but the opportunities for inspection may be few and

Bastin and others have demonstrated the presence of sulphate-reducing bacteria in oil wells producing salt water. Analyses show that at 125°F. bacteria alone reduce sulphates in East Texas salt water by only 3 per cent in 30 days, forming principally hydrogen sulphide and sodium or calcium hydroxide. The hydrogen sulphide reacts with soluble iron compounds to produce iron sulphide in the absence of oxygen, and ferric hydroxide where oxygen and air are present. Where iron or other metals and iron sulphide are already in the water containing bacteria, I00 per cent reduction of the sulphates is complete in 30 days or less; where magnesium is present, reduction is complete in 15 days. The effects of changes in temperature, of different bactericides, and of concentration of bactericides on sulphate reduction are described in detail and illustrated by tables and curves. The significance of sulphate reduction on corrosive properties of oil-field water is briefly discussed. Chemistry of East Texas Oil-field Water The chemical composition of the water in the East Texas field salt-water disposal pits is shown in Table I. This salt water corrodes pipes, pumps, and steel tanks excessively, principally because of its content of oxygen, hydrogen, sulphide, and carbonic acid. The carbonates in the water when exposed to air tend to give up carbon dioxide and to precipitate calcium carbonate in large quantities. This forms coatings in tanks, settling pits, and ditches, and soon, unless removed by acid treatment, will effectively clog an injection well and reduce the flow of water back into the ground. The iron compounds in the water, most of which are dissolved from tanks and pipes, are in the ferrous form, and when exposed to the air are oxidized from soluble ferrous carbonate to insoluble ferric hydroxide, resulting in the precipitation of a gelatinous precipitate that will clog oil-field sands effectively: 2Fe(HCO3)2 + O + H2O -> 2Fe(OH)3 + 4CO2 The sulphates in strong sulphate-bearing water may be attacked by swarms of sulphate-reducing bacteria and more hydrogen sulphide may be produced. The hydrogen sulphide reacts with soluble minerals in the water to form black sludges. A knowledge of the chemistry of each reaction in oil-field water is important to the oil-field engineer, since means must be devised to prevent the formation of harmful precipitates that clog injection wells and to prevent corrosion of tanks by harmful products of biochemical processes. The carbon-oxygen reaction without doubt is the basic reaction in steelmaking. It is important on several counts: In the first place, carbon is the element that distinguishes steel from iron. It is the principal element controlling properties, and its control is of prime concern. Although the principal objective of the carbon-oxygen reaction is to oxidize excess carbon, the accompanying boil should not be underrated. The mechanical agitation, stirring, and mixing resulting from the boil are so useful in the distribution of heat and in promoting uniformity of composition in the bath that, were it not a natural accompaniment of the carbon-oxygen reaction, it is probable that something would have to be invented to replace it. The open-hearth operation, for example, with the bath heated from above by radiation, would be impracticable without the carbon boil. The electric-arc furnace is somewhat less dependent on it, but every melter knows how much easier it is to gain temperature with minimum damage to refractories during the boil than with a dead bath The motor action of the induced current of the induction furnace makes the carbon boil unnecessary but even there a severe oxidation has been found useful in giving greater freedom from porosity in certain steels. The quantitative aspects of the carbon-oxygen reaction have been given considerable attention by a large number of investigators, and the principles of physical chemistry have played an important part in these studies. Physical chemistry is the science of the mechanics and mathematics of chemical reactions. It is possible to study the mechanisms of reactions in a qualitative manner writhout reference to mathematics and thus obtain valuable concepts as to the manner in which the wheels go around. When it is desired to express quantitative relations in these reactions, however, resort to mathematics is not only convenient but necessary. Mathematics may also be regarded as the shorthand language of physical chemistry. A basic relation whose description requires numerous words may be expressed very simply by a mathematical formula or equation. A good example of this is the equilibrium constant for a chemical reaction. Expressed verbally, it is: When a chemical reaction has reached a condition of equilibrium, the Product of the concentration of the reacting substances on one side of the equation, divided by the product of the concentration of the reacting substances on the other side, gives a quotient that is a constant at constant temperature For the carbon-oxygen reaction C + O ^ CO this is expressed simply as % C X % O -%co where K (from the German Konstant) is the equilibrium constant for the reaction. Although mathematics is such a necessary and useful tool, it is also a potential pitfall. Mathematics in itself is an abstract science, which is not inhibited by consideration of mechanisms or materials.

An observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. Historical Summary It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the. impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long Direc- of glassmaking as an art> drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

The present paper may be considered complementary to an earlier contribution on the same subject by F. R. Archibald and C. F. Jackson.1 It is particularly concerned with engineering and technological aspects of the operations at the Harleyville Alumina Plant during its period of operation from January 1945 to July 1946. The plant was built for and operated by Ancor Corporation, at Harleyville, South Carolina, as part of the government sponsored wartime program related to alumina production from domestic raw materials. The main purpose of the program was to secure technical and engineering data, based on actual plant experience, that might serve as a foundation for large scale production of alumina from raw materials other than bauxite. The Harleyville plant was directed specifically to treatment of clays found in very extensive deposits in the Carolinas and Georgia using the lime-sinter process developed by Ancor Corporation. It is considered that the purpose stated above has been served and this paper is to record and discuss some of the more important findings. The main factor in location of the plant at Harleyville was the presence in that locality of a rather remarkable deposit of high calcium limestone. The clay mining operation was centered near Aiken, S. C., and although a rail haul of ninety miles was involved there were, at the time, factors favorable to the Harleyville location offsetting, in part, the cost of transportation of clay, There are, no doubt, locations in the general area where clay and limestone deposits may be found in closer proximity hut they had not been proven up when the project was undertaken. Availability of power from the Santee-Copper development whose high tension line skirted the Property; ready access to rail and highway transportation; the promise, realized in actuality, of ample supply of soft water; and availability of labor supply were other factors of importance. Moreover, the general area has the decided advantage, for this type of operation, of a mild climate. Construction was begun in August 1943, and although stopped for a time priding review of the general situation that fall, it was resumed, albeit with less urgency, and substantially completed by the end of 1944. The total capital cost was approximately $3,460,000 The first alumina was turned out in April 1945 and from then until the plant was closed down in July 1946, the operations followed a succession of periods of production alternating with periods in which minor alterations were made in conformity with experience. Steady improvement was made and at the time Operations were discontinued it was considered that experience and the necessary engineering were in shape for removal of the remaining bottlenecks and a somewhat major revision in one section of the plant. This paper discusses the metallurgical testing procedures and their applications at the laboratories and mills of Pima Mining Co. The author shows, using discussions and case histories, that routine sampling and evaluation of daily and monthly data can be as valuable as thorough laboratory investigations and mill test work. A great deal of valuable information can be made available this way. This paper discusses laboratory and mill metal-lurgical testing procedures and their applications at Pima Mining Co., located about 25 miles southwest of Tuscon, Ariz. The Company, incorporated in 1951 (the year the orebody was found) in California to operate the Pima mine, is jointly owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., Utah Contruction and Mining Co., and Union Oil Co. Milling started in December 1956. The main Pima orebody is a contact metamorphic vein of copper-bearing hornfels with an average dip of 45° to the south with an east-west strike. The hanging and footwalls are quartzitic pyroclastics (arkosite) containing some sulfides. Barren igneous intrusions are also present. Conglomerates and alluvial wash cover the deposit to a depth averaging about 200 ft. The principal copper mineral is chal-copyrite. Native copper, chalcocite, and minor amounts of chrysocolla and other copper minerals are also present, together with sphalerite and some molybdenite. Generally, it has been noted that the ratio of chalcocite to chalcopyrite is higher in the lower grade ores, while as the grade increases, there are only minor amounts of chalcocite. Open pit mining is employed at Pima, using both trucks and an inclined skiphoist system. A detailed description of Pima Mining Co. operations was presented by Spaulding et all. More recently another orebody to the north and east of the present pit has been discovered and will be placed in operation within a few years. This ore is of a porphyritic rather than a lode nature since values are disseminated in both igneous and metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks. The new orebody is expected to be harder and cleaner than the present deposit. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Pima Mining Co. nor of the profession in general. PlMA MILL The following outline of milling practice is presented to furnish a background for later chapters of this report wherein specific problems will be detailed and analyzed. Run of mine ore is crushed in three stages, using conventional equipment to 85% minus 1/2-in. for feed to two 10 x l6-ft rod mills operating in open circuit. Each rod mill discharge is split between two 10% x 13-ft ball mills in closed circuit with three 20-in. cyclones. In addition, a 7 x 12-ft ball mill with one 20-in. cyclone receives part of the discharge from one of the rod mills. This equipment was manufactured by Allis Chalmers and Equipment Engineers. The cyclone overflows are combined, sampled and, after joining the regrind cyclone overflow, are distributed into 12 10-cell Fagergren 66-in. flotation machines. Sampling of the fluid from oil wells for percentages of oil, emulsified oil, and water during the last two years has brought out some interesting facts concerning oil-water emulsion. This result led to a laboratory investigation of emulsion, which substantiated the conclusions made from the field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present the information collected, the laboratory experiments, and our interpretation of the same. In order to define emulsified .oil exactly, give its synthesis and origin, and to show how and when it is formed in the wells, the work was necessarily divided into two separate lines—laboratory work and field observations. It is hoped that this study may lead to a discussion of such points so that the petroleum engineer, geologist, or technologist may be benefited by its practical bearing on oil-field management. Special credit is due Mr. Everett Carpenter, chief geologist of the Empire Gas & Fuel Co., for his assistance and cooperation in this work. Labobatory Investigations on Emulsified Oil Laboratory investigations were conducted in an attempt to learn the composition and some of the properties of emulsified oil, or B. S., as it is more commonly called, also to demonstrate, by laboratory methods, how B. 5. may be formed under conditions similar to those existing at the time a well is being pumped, and how it may be broken down. Literature bearing on this subject is widely scattered and very limited in scope. Bacon and Hamor define B. S., or bottom settlings, as "earthy matter, inert organic matter, or, in the case of Pennsylvanian petroleum, an emulsion of paraffin wax and water, which accompanies crude oil." In this discussion we will limit the term B. S. to that heavy, dark-brown emulsion, composed of a physical mixture of water, oil, and air with some included inert matter, either organic or inorganic. As cold working is an important feature in a great many of the fabricating processes now applied, this paper presents some ideas of the nature and results of the plastic deformation produced in this operation. The art of manufacturing metal for practical uses is very old and has undergone very great development. The science of metals has also developed very rapidly recently and the various processes to which ,metals are submitted are much better understood now than they were even a short time ago. All the knowledge that can be obtained on this subject is useful because it promotes efficiency in converting metal into finished articles. ATOMIC ARRANGEMENT IN CRYSTALS In the solid state all metals are crystalline. The atoms are arranged in, a definite symmetrical configuration, which is repeated at regular intervals, and thereby defines what we may term a lattice. Presumably . the atoms exist as positive ions. The dissociated electrons place themselves between groups of positive ions, and thus define a second lattice, an "electron lattice." From such a point of view, the crystalline forces which hold a metal together are the electrostatic attractions between positive ions and negative electrons. The particular type of lattice into which a metal crystallizes depends on the number of these lattice electrons given up by each atom, and is thus connected very closely with the chemical valence of the metal.

BLUE HEAT PHENOMENA IN constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, we necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be, universally observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of. concern to the constructors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classified as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena are observed in pure or nearly-pure iron in the reaction of its mechanical properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increased temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observed that iron," as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardness and strength by low-temperature annealing. after cold work,1 and also by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150° to 300° C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object of ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high purity iron and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena could be traced.

From the standpoint of exploration and new discoveries, South Arkansas had a discouraging year in 1944. In January there were 73 untested drilling blocks, and 60 additions were made during the year. Of the total, 65 were condemned by dry holes on or adjacent to them, while 5 proved productive. The latter resulted in the discovery of the Salem Church, Calhoun Wilks, and Strong fields, and the extension of the Village field to the southeast. The year ended with 63 untested blocks, 41 of which were scheduled for tests to the Smackover lime, the state's deepest oil-producing formation. Geophysical activity in 1944 totaled 164 crew weeks, of which 110 were seismic, 43 gravity, and 11 radioactive (Fig. I), in contrast with 674 crew weeks reported for 1943, of, which 563 were seismic and in gravity, Five seismograph and two gravity crews were engaged in exploration in South Arkansas during January 1944. but only two seismograph crews were working there at the end of the year. In addition, exploratory core drills were used for a total of 38 weeks during the year. The year's few discoveries, none of which is considered as having added appreciably to state reserves, were the meager results obtained in the drilling of 62 wildcat wells 2000 ft. or deeper. Of this total (a detail of which appears in Table 2), 42 were drilled to the Smack-over lime or below, The average depth of the 62 wells was 5384 ft., as compared with 4992 ft. in the preceding year, while the average depth of the 42 wildcats in the lime was 5913 ft. in 1944. Fig. 2 has been prepared to show all , wells penetrating to the Reynolds oölitic lime. The 1944 dry holes are circled lightly, while discoveries are heavily circled and shown as producers. Smackover lime fields, producing from the Reynolds oolitic lime member, are indicated in black, and the locations of dry wildcat wells drilled prior to 1944 are also shown. Table 3 provides a listing of all Smackover lime wells drilled through the end of 1944. Production for the year was slightly more than in 1943, totaling 29,282,747 bbl., as compared with 27,521,943 bbl. for the preceding year. The increase was 1,760,804 bbl., or 6.4 per cent, bringing production to a peak exceeded only in the 1923 to 1928 period of flush production from the older shallow fields, principally Smackover. The increase was largely attributable to additional development in the Dorcheat-Macedonia, Atlanta, Fouke, Stephens-Smart, Haynesville, and Village fields, little production deriving from 1944 discoveries. These six fields accounted for loo of the 122 field wells drilled during the year. Annual and cumulative production for the producing life of the state are presented graphically in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 has been prepared by the author to show the producing ages and present known productive limits of all fields in South Arkansas. Production data, as usual, are assembled in Table 2, and provide a further breakdown of producing formations in the individual fields.

A metal or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

Recent investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebertl,‡ Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses. Metallographic Investigation A briquette of molybdenum powder when heated in a carburizing atmosphere at 1500" to 1600" C. for several hours develops the carbon-rich layer shown in Fig. 1. The carburization was accomplished by placing the briquette in a carbon tube, which was heated in the hydrogen atmosphere of an alundum muffle wound with tungsten resistor. While the macrostructure indicates two distinct shells, and suggests the possibility of two carbon-rich phases, no evidence of this condition could be detected by the microscope, which revealed but one high-carbon constituent. This carbide forms next to the molybdenum as a relatively dense, light-colored zone (Fig. 2) which passes abruptly into an outer layer of spongy texture. As will be noted later, only one intermediate phase was observed in the X-ray photograms prepared of different locations in the carburized zone. An observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. Historical Summary It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the. impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long Direc- of glassmaking as an art> drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

amounted to about 2000 metric tons. The total output is increasing from year to year. Marine salt is now produced in Haiti in quantity sufficient to supply nearly all the requirements of this Republic, so production tax is now collected. Central America Guatemala-The major production of salt in Guatemala is solar salt derived from sea water, but the Indian population prefers salt derived by boiling coastal marine earth. Salt is taxed by the Government. The industry has been beset by controversies in recent years, especially following the revolution of October 1944. The Government issued a decree in August 1940 designed to control production and price of salt. The creation of a salt consortium was provided for and marketing was to be governed by production quotas. It is understood that the Government pool was later dissolved and the industry is now under older laws whereby production and sales have no limits. South America Panama-Output of salt in Panama in a very recent year was 11,000 net tons of solar-evaporated sea salt. A Government bank is in charge of output and distribution of the product. Colombia-Rock-salt deposits are known in five places-Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile, in the Department of Cundinamarca, the Cumural y Upin near Restrepo, and San Miguel y Barital, near Medina in Meta Intendency. The latter deposit never has been worked on account of its inaccessibility. Saline springs are worked in four locations. The largest producer among marine salinas is Manare but it is now planned to make Bahia Honda the largest. Some evaporated salt is made in vacuum pans. The deposits at Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile are believed to occur in the domal type of deposit. All the salt resources are under Government control. Venezuela-The salt industry in Venezuela is under Government control and is taxed. Taxes in recent years, however, have been reduced for salt used in curing hides and salting meats, fish and fish products. Production has approximated 25,000 metric tons yearly but may now be considerably above that figure. The basin on the peninsula of Araya, State of Sucre, which at present is the only important source of salt, could produce at least 175,000 metric tons if more ground were provided-a larger supply than the entire country could consume. This unique landlocked basin of nearly 1000 acres lies 12 ft below sea level. Ecuador-Salt is a Government monopoly in Ecuador and is produced chiefly by solar evaporation close to the shore. The main producing center is on the Santa Elena peninsula, which supplies about 90 pct of the salt. Small fields are at Punta Arenas, Payana, and Chara-

Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

Since their comparatively recent development, the alloys of cadmium with silver and copper or nickel, and of cadmium with nickel alone, have been used somewhat extensively as liners for connecting rod bearings and main bearings of internal-combustion engines. In applications where, owing to high bearing loads and elevated operating temperatures, the life of bearings made from tin-base or lead-base alloys has been undesirably short, cadmium alloys have demonstrated considerable advantage. In applications where, because of deflection of the crankshaft or bearing supports, copper-lead bearing metals have resulted in scored shafts, cadmium alloys have been operated successfully. The somewhat serious drawback to these alloys in bearing service has been that they, in common with copper-lead and certain lead alloys, are susceptible to corrosion in the presence of lubricants containing organic acids. These acids may be fatty acids (such as oleic acid) derived from animal or vegetable oils that sometimes have been compounded with engine lubricants, or they may be compounds of an acid nature developed by the oxidation of some petroleum oils under operating conditions. The result of such acid attack on bearings is illustrated by the photograph, Fig. 1. The petroleum oils that are most readily oxidized to a corrosive condition, and the operating conditions under which such oxidation most readily occurs, are now rather well known among the technical organizations of both the petroleum and automotive industries. While means have been developed for inhibiting petroleum oils against such acid formation, the knowledge that this condition may be encountered has been a factor in restricting the wider use of cadmium alloys as engine bearings. It has appeared, therefore, that their value and use would be enhanced if they could be made corrosion-resistant to a degree compatible with the most severe operating requirements.
