Hydrologic and economic criteria figure in many obvious ways in water resources development, but they are rarely linked quantitatively, and most of the applications are pertinent only to the case in point. In the preparation of a regional plan for the massive program of groundwater development in the Punjab, situations have arisen where the choice among two or more alternatives was made by analyzing the economic implications of critical hydrologic parameters. Two of these situations which are of more or less general interest are described herein. The first involves basic development policy, i.e., the question of whether groundwater development should be based on the demand of the economy, or the conservation concept of safe yield. The analysis demonstrated that mining of groundwater is clearly indicated for areas where alternative supplies are unavailable. The second problem involves integrating hydrologic data into an economic model to determine optimum well design. From an analysis of all pertinent factors, a simple nomograph was derived for determining well specifications on site during construction. The nomograph can be modified for use in any alluvial terrain. In the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains —the region known as the Punjab- Pakistan is proceeding with integrated development of water and land resources on a scale never before contemplated. The heart of the development plan is a massive program of groundwater development to supplement canal irrigation supplies and to provide drainage relief to the irrigated lands. By the close of 1966 about 2500 high-capacity wells were in operation and furnishing the water supply and drainage requirements for nearly two million irrigated acres. The development plan calls for the construction of a total of nearly 30,000 wells with an aggregate capacity of 120,000 cfs by 1980. This is part of an integrated program eventually affecting over 20 million acres of irrigated lands. [This development program is administered by the West Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) for which the firm of Tipton and Kalm-bach, Inc. serves as regional planning consultant for the Northern Zone. The material presented herein is derived from planning studies which have been made in connection with the preparation of a regional development plan for the Northern zone.] Pakistan is proceeding with this large-scale development of land and water resources at a time when she is at the threshold of an almost calamitous population growth. Furthermore, she is attempting this development at a time when most of her usable land is already occupied and her food demands exceed current production. Here in the Northern Zone is one of the largest continuous areas of irrigated land in the world, easily irrigated, with a warm, dry climate and ample potential supplies of surface water and groundwater. Except for an abundance of land and labor, other primary resources are lacking or in very limited supply. The agriculture sector so dominates the economy that only by means of an effective development of the agricultural resources can other sectors grow and contribute to a viable economy. Because of inadequate irrigation, farming here has not effectively participated in the twentieth century revolution in agriculture, and only by means of massive development of potential supplies can Pakistan catch up. Capital for any kind of mass development must come from the outside. But the overriding restraint to development of the land and labor resources is the availability of water. ECONOMICS OF DEVELOPMENT The decision-making process in planning regional development becomes increasingly complex as the various sectors of the economy become more highly developed. Where, as in this case, one sector dominates the economy and its development can be considered the key to development of other sectors, the decision-making process is simplified and it is easier to identify alternatives and to trace the prob-

The crystallographic orientation relationships resulting when lead is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge were determined. For each nucleating agent several definite orientatioz relationships were found. These relationships seemed to be controlled by good symmetry relations and low crystallographic disregistry between mating planes. For any given nucleating agent the under colling for nucleation was found fairly constant and independent of the orientation relationship and consequent disregistry. It was also found that, upon re melting and refreezing the Pb, the orientation relationship was changed. These findings prove that crystallographic disregistry is not the controlling factor in heterogeneous nucleation from the liquid. The results of this investigation tend to confirm the theory presented in a preceding paper that heterogeneous nucleation starts with the formation of an adsorbed layer of nucleated metal on the nucleat-ing impurity. Evidence is given that cavities in the nucleating agent act as centers of nucleation. IT has long been known' that solid extraneous particles are active in catalyzing phase transformations that occur in a system, particularly condensation and crystallization. It is well established that these heterogeneities act as catalysts by providing surfaces upon which nuclei of the precipitating phase can form with activation energies smaller than those required for homogeneous nucleation. Numerous investigations have shown that in this process of heterogeneous nucleation: a) the nucleus forms with one, or several, definite crystallographic orientation relationships with the nucleating phase2-4 and b) that there is a small range of undercoolings or super saturations characteristic of the nucleation of a given solid on a given Substrate.5-10 Turnbull and vonnegut11 have developed a theory based on theories developed by Volmer12 and Turn-bull and Fisher1= for heterogeneous nucleation from gases and liquids, that relates the super saturation or undercooling required for nucleation to the dis-registry between the lattices of the nucleus and the nucleating agent. This theory predicts that nucleation should occur with the orientation relationship between the nucleus and nucleating agent that minimizes the disregistry. Further, it predicts that the undercooling or super saturation necessary for nucleation should be a function of the disregistry. Numerous investigations have dealt with the orientation relationships resulting from the condensation of vapors onto crystalline solid substrates2,3 and a few with the nucleation of one phase by a second phase in solidification4,14. Others have dealt with the supersaturation8-10 and undercooling5-7 associated with nucleation in condensation and solidification respectively. However, there is virtually no report that gives both of these factors for the same system. In this investigation a study was made of the undercoolings and orientation relationships resulting when Pb is nucleated from the liquid by Ni, Cu, Ag, and Ge. It was the purpose of this investigation to check the Turnbull-Vonnegut theory, i.e., the importance of crystallographic disregistry between nucleating catalyst and nucleated metal. The results indicate that disregistry is not an important factor in nucleation and that the nucleation process is probably somewhat more complex than current theories suggest. EXPERMENTAL PROCEDURE Small single crystals of nickel, copper, silver, and germanium were prepared from materials of four to five nines purity, and the Pb used was also 99.999+ pet pure. Cu and Ag single crystals were prepared by sealing small chips of Cu or Ag in an evacuated quartz capsule and heating the capsule at 2000°F for 1 hr before cooling. Nickel crystals of 200 diam were also prepared in evacuated quartz capsules, but melting was done by heating the capsules in an oxy-acetylene flame for a few minutes. This investigation attempts to describe and simulate the alcohol displacement process by means of a cell model, as employed in chemical engineering practice. The proposed model is more simple than previously proposed models. and utilizes parameters chosen on a theoretical basis. The model successfully reproduced the formation of the stabilized bank and the breakthrough of alcohol, the latter depending on one of the model parameters, which may be correlated with the length of the porous medium. Moreover, the effects of the phase behavior of the liquid system involved, as observed in experimental studies, were reproduced. Several variations of the basic model were devised and tested on a digital computer. These included the cases in which: (1) the actual value of fractional flow was used in cell-to-cell computations; (2) the number of cells was varied within the same run; and (3) incomplete rather than complete phase equilibrium was assumed within each cell. The proposed cell model clarifies the basic mechanism of the process. Detailed concentration profiles obtained for each cell, for instance, showed the mechanism of bank formation in relation to the phase behavior characteristics. The results obtained indicated a varying degree of phase equilibrium concommitant with changes in the velocities of the phases in an actual alcohol displacement. This condition was approximated by changing the number of cells during the simulation. Interesting information was obtained on the influence of path length on the efficiency of alcohol displacement, which has been the subject of some controversy. Certain limitations preclude the use of the proposed model as a substitute for experimental studies. The results obtained were, nevertheless, of value in interpreting the experimental results. INTRODUCTION During recent years considerable effort has been directed toward an understanding of alcohol displacement, the process whereby oil and water are recovered from a porous medium by the continuous injection of a solvent. The complex nature of the physical process involved has so far defied a complete mathematical treatment. Other methods of approach, amounting to an overall material balance, have been proposed, yielding useful information on certain aspects of the process.1-3 Taber et al, in particular, defined the displacement mechanism in terms of the phase behavior of the alcohol-oil-brine system invoIved.2 Wachmann reported a mathematical treatment of alcohol displacement subject to certain simplifying assumptions? Donohue proposed the use of a "cell model" for simulating alcohol disPlacement.5 The nature of the assumptions involved limited the utility of the model. The present work attempts to examine the variables involved in the simulation of alcohol displacement and discusses several possible versions of the basic cell model. Under certain conditions the model results are similar to the experimental results. In particular, the spontaneous formation of of the stabilized bank and the effects of the system phase behavior were successfully reproduced. PREVIOUS WORK ON CELL MODELS Cell models and the theoretical plate concept are often used in solving chemical engineering problems in which an explicit mathematical solution may be difficult or impossible to obtain. Examples of such applications occur in distillation, gas-liquid chroma tography,6 reactor technology, absorption, etc. In petroleum engineering, such a model was used by Attra7 to describe non-equilibrium gas drive, and by Higgins and Leigh ton8 to calculate sweep efficiency in water flooding. Aris and Amundsen pointed out the equivalence between the diffusion model and perfectly mixed cells connected in series.9 Deans proposed a three-parameter cell model to simulate two-component

The model developed by Tuylor for the calculation of Polycrystalline yield strength has been applied to the case of an aggregate hawing a preferred orientation. In general this procedure requires the specification of texture by means of weighting factors applied to specific orientations. The problem to which the model has been applied is that of the yield-strength aniso-tropy of cold-rolled aluminum whose rolling texture was described as a combination of (110)[112] and (311) [112] In this case yield-strength anisotropy is defined by the rutio of yield strength measured at an angle 8 to the rolling direction to that measured along the rolling direction. The method of calculation of yield-strength ratio as a function of ? is described and the results show good agreement with experimental values. The orthotropic yield criterion suggested by Hill has been applied to the results and the strain ratio R also calculated as a function of ?. This has been compared with calculations using the method suggested by Elias, Heyer, and Smith which does not exhibit suck good agreement with observation. one deficietlcy of the method presented is that the strain ratios used by are those applying to iso-Irobic materials. The method should therefore be reg-clrded only as a first abbroximation to the prediction of anisotropy. THE problem of calculating the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline aggregates from the properties of single crystals has attracted attention for a number of years. The most important contributions to this study have been those due to: Sachs,' Cox and sopwith,2 Taylor,3 Kochendorfer,4 Batdorf and Budiansky,5 Calnan and Clews,6 Bishop and Hill,7,8 Kocks,9 Budiansky, Hashin, and sanders, 10 Kroner,11 Cyzak, Bow, and payne, 12 Budiansky and Wu,13 and Lin.14 While the earlier work has been largely superseded, recent developments tend to support Taylor's solution" within the restriction imposed by his assumptions. The essential features of Taylor's approach were: 1) the material is rigid-plastic; 2) each grain experiences the same strain components as the aggregate as a whole (the problem was that of uniaxial deformation with principal strain components in the ratio 3) all regions of each grain deform uniformly; 4) work hardening occurs equally on all slip systems. While Bishop and Hill7 have generally validated this approach, there has been some criticism offered. Kocks? as pointed out that since multiple slip must occur the single-crystal data must be determined from orientations arranged such that polyslip takes place. Boas and Hargreaves,15 and others, have shown experimentally that the strain distribution within grains is not uniform, the strains in the vicinity of grain boundaries being less than those in the center of the grains. Both of these criticisms can be largely offset by the suitable choice of single-crystal critical shear stress. However, for the problem analyzed below, the critical shear stress is not directly used and, consequently, these criticisms lose their importance. The more recent contributions have attempted to obtain a more complete analysis by considering an elas-toplastic material and considering interactions between grains of differing orientations. Lin14 has considered the early stages of yielding for a polycrystalline aggregate having specific regions of defined slip plane orientations. On the other hand, Budiansky and Wu13 have allowed for these interactions for randomly disposed grain orientations and have calculated the polycrystalline stress-strain curves for crystals exhibiting either elastic-ideally plastic or kinematic hardening characteristics. This work has shown that yielding commences when the macroscopic stress is 2.2 times the critical shear stress for slip in a single crystal (7,). The yield stress-strain curve then rises becoming asymptotic to a value of 3.072 7,. This is close to the value obtained by Bishop and Hill (3.06) in their confirmation of Taylor's method. This, of course, is to be expected since, at large strain values, the elastic strains are negligible and the rigid-plastic model is satisfactory. The results of Budiansky and Wu indicate that the result obtained by Taylor is 7.7 pct high at a plastic strain which is two times the elastic strain at the initiation of yield. By defining the anisotropy in terms of relative values, the ratio of yield strength at orientation ?, to that measured in the rolling direction, the effect of the discrepancy in Taylor's solution is considered to be of lesser consequence. Therefore, it is anticipated that an analysis based on Taylor's solution, which can be quite straightforward, should provide a reasonable estimation of the anisotropy of materials having a preferred orientation texture. OUTLINE OF TAYLOR'S METHOD In fee metals there are four possible slip planes (the octahedral planes) and in each there are three possible slip directions (the edges of the octahedron), that is a total of twelve possible slip systems. von Mises16 has shown that at least five independent slip systems must become operative in each grain of the polycrystalline aggregate in order to preserve continuity of strain. With this geometrical requirement as basis and the assumptions previously listed, Taylor determined the operative slip systems for a number of orientations of the tensile stress axis specified in the unit stereographic triangle. Mechanical properties of the eutectic between CoAl and cobalt were measured over a range of- temnperatures and strain rates for a variety of microstructures produced by directional solidification and by thermo-mechanical processing. Directional solidification led to rodlike, lamellar, and irregular microstructures. The unusually high volume fraction of the cobalt-rich rods and the lurge spacing of the rods were explained by the phase diagram. The hot-worked structure consisted of fibers of COAL in a cobalt-rich matrix. The roonl- tevlperature strength of the uvrought material increased with decreasing grain size but the 1000°C strength decreased with decreasing pain size. At high temperatures the directionally solidified tnaterial was stronger and less strain-rate-sensitice than the hot-rolled material. The fine-grained hot-worked ma-terial became superplastic at high temperatures, with tensile elongations greater than 850 pct, while at root temperature this material was ductile and impact-resistant because of the ductile matrix. Fracture occurred in the directionally solidified material at elevated temperatures by inter phase separation and at roorn temperature by cracks in the intermetallic phase. Growth of these cracks was impeded by the ductile cobalt-rich phase. It was found that the CoAl intermetallic remains ordered at elevated temperatures. DIRECTIONAL solidification of eutectic alloys has been used to produce structures consisting of parallel rods or lamellae. Although the spacing of the phases depends on the growth rate, it has been observed to be of the order of 1 µ in many eutectics. A strong intermetallic phase has been used to reinforce a ductile matrix in the rod eutectic A1-Al3Ni and the lamellar eutectic Al-Al2cu.1 The microstructure of the eutectics A1-A13Ni and A1-A12Cu remained aligned after samples of these alloys were exposed to temperatures just below their melting points for long times. Stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures makes directionally solidified eutectics a candidate for high-temperature applications. Recently Thompson4 has developed the Ni-NiMo eutectic containing 40 pct NiMo lamellae, giving a tensile strength superior to nickel-base superalloys. Unfortunately, this eutectic oxidizes rapidly at elevated temperatures. By mechanically processing a two-phase structure, one may reach strengths as high as 700,000 psi, as demonstrated by drawn pearlite.5 In this case the strengthening mechanism was thought to be related to the fine substructure formed during deformation.5 However, a heavily worked structure may recrystallize and coarsen at elevated temperatures. Some worked eutectics such as Al-Al2Cu,6 Pb-Sn,7 and Sn-Bi7 have shown unusually large elongations in tension when tested at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon of large extension, called "superplasticity", was related to the fine grain size of wrought two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures. A mode of deformation of "superplastic" material has been shown to be grain boundary sliding,' which has also been observed during creep of polycrystalline materials.9 The Co-A1 system was chosen for this investigation after examining the phase diagrams of binary eutectics." The high melting point of 1400°C, the aluminum content which was expected to give oxidation resistance, and the properties of the intermetallic CoAl were the chief factors influencing this choice. This eutectic consists of a mixture of the intermetallic CoAl and a cobalt-rich solid solution. The intermetallic CoAl has a large range of solubility and a CsCl structure." From the similarity between CoAl and NiAl one would expect CoAl to be ordered at elevated temperatures; however, specific heat measurements" show a transition at 800°C. West-brookL2 has measured the hot hardness of CoAl and found a rapid decrease in hardness above 600°C. The tensile properties and stress rupture properties of as-cast CoAl-Co eutectic were measured by Ashbrook and wallace13 who report a room-temperature tensile elongation of less than 1 pct. I) EXPERIMENTAL A) Sample Preparation. Experimental materials were prepared by directional solidification, by hot working, and by powder processing. The starting materials were electrolytic 99.9 pct pure cobalt and 99.99 pct pure aluminum. 1) Directional Solidification. A vertical Bridgman apparatus heated by induction was used to directionally solidify cylindrical ingots $ in. in diam and 5 in. long. The apparatus was first evacuated and then an argon atmosphere was introduced to retard evaporation. The ingots were contained in an alumina crucible inside a graphite susceptor that rested on a movable water-cooled base. The base was lowered out of the induction coil at a constant rate. Eight of the ingots were solidified using a drive rate of 2.5 cm per hr, two of the ingots at 1.2 cm per hr, and one ingot at 10 cm per hr. The eutectic composition Co 10 wt pct A1 was used in all but one ingot which had the composition of the stoichiometric CoAl intermetallic, Co 32 wt pct Al. 2) Mechanical Processing. At 1000°C the eutectic Co 10 wt pct A1 is a mixture of an intermetallic phase, Co 21 wt pct Al, and a cobalt-rich phase, Co 5 wt pct Al.10 These phases differ from the stoichiometric CO 32 wt pct A1 and pure cobalt because of the large solubility of this eutectic at elevated temperatures." Four rectangular slab ingots, 4 by 1 by 12 in. high, of Co 10 wt pct Al, Co 5 wt pct Al, Co 21 wt pct Al, and Co 32 wt pct A1 were cast for hot rolling. The properties of quartz, calcite, magnezite and dolomite suspensions prepared from -30 µm size fractions of these minerals have been investigated. Selective coagulation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was possible at the pH values slightly above those for the i.e.p. of the carbonate minerals. The tests revealed that quartz suspensions were not flocculated by the anionic flocculants, whereas the same polymers were flocculants for calcite, magnezite and dolomite. Selectivity in the flocculation of the quartz-calcite, quartz-magnezite and quartz-dolomite binary suspensions was not, however, satisfactory because of the activation of quartz by ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Dispersing reagents can be used to improve the selectivity of flocculation.

The paper outlines the parameters required for an estimation of the size of chain pillars for longwall coal mining. The principal parameters are: stress distribution around the edge of the extracted coal panel, strength properties and geometry of the pillars. The principal thrust of the paper is directed toward correlating the chain pillar strength to the magnitude and direction of strata load expected to act on the pillars. A brief review of the pillar strength formulae pertinent to chain pillar stability is given. The chain pillars are categorized as 'yielding' or 'stiff', depending on the duty required of them. The coal measure strata is classified as 'soft' or 'hard' conditions, the degree of competence of the roof and floor greatly influencing the caving characteristics of the gob and the stability of the roof chain pillars.
