That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

Concrete is a mixture of a fine aggregate (sand), a coarse aggregate (gravel), cement, and water. Cement itself is the most expensive of the ingredients but generally amounts to only about 10% of the concrete mixture. Cement raw materials include calcium, alumina, iron oxide, silica, and gypsum. They are heated and chemically changed into clinker "minerals," which are then ground and shipped as cement. Each of the four main clinker minerals-tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite-impart specific strength and compositional properties to the final concrete product. During hydration of the cement, chemical changes produce new minerals that include calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H, the main constituent of hydrated cement paste), calcium hydroxide, and calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate ions, among others. Two main reactions can occur that may be deleterious to concrete. Normal cement pore solutions, in a hydrated cement, contain sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. If these alkali concentrations are too high, they can react with the siliceous aggregate (alkali-silica reaction, or ASR) to form an alkali-rich calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-N+K-S-H), which, upon prolonged contact with water, can expand to crack the concrete. The other deleterious reaction occurs when the mineral ettringite (Ca6A12(S04)3OH12. 26H20) forms after the concrete is hardened (delayed ettringite formation) and cracks the concrete. Many of the concrete bridges and structures built in New Mexico in the past 20 years are in need of replacement due to deterioration. Many others constructed very early on in the century are still sound. By collecting and analyzing samples of both old and new concrete and good and bad concrete, we compared their differences on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. Samples taken from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, drainage canals, spillways, and a railroad-trestle foundation have construction dates that range from 1923 to 1997. They were analyzed by electron microprobe and by petrographic microscopy. Cracks, air voids, and aggregate alteration were primary locations for investigation and analysis. Using the electron microprobe, ettringite was found in voids of most of the samples, both in good and bad concrete. This leads us to believe that ettringite formation is not causing distress in the concrete. There was one exception in which ettringite was found lining a crack. In this instance, ettringite may have the ability to further the cracking and cause distress. No alkali-silica gel was identified with the microprobe. Using the petrographic microscope in cross-polarized light, a light-brown material was observed that lined some of the air voids and cracks; however, exact mineralogic identifications were not made. Although many instances of chalcedony and other deleterious quartz phases were found, no clear evidence of ASR-gel deterioration was present in our samples using these methods. However, positive identification of the ASR gel was made on an in-place concrete near one of our sample sites and in several sample cores using a newly developed chemical test for the soluble potassium ions associated with the gel. The chemical used in this test is sodium cobaltinitrite, Na3Co(NO2)6.

Project delivery strategies are determined by project context, business case requirements, scale of project, market conditions, ownerÆs capability and preference, contractorÆs experience, resource and skill availability, project location and type of project or facility.Successful project management requires the setting of coherent, effective and realistic business objectives and success criteria. The management team needs to lead, prioritise, resource, align, plan, track and communicate the processes that enable the realisation of these business objectives and success criteria.For any given project there is a unique balance between selection of a simple project delivery strategy that minimises interfaces and a complex strategy that necessarily engages the use of expertise and experience from numerous parties. The right balance for a project between these "book-end cases" is a function of how the project owner or managing contractor defines its objectives and chooses to manage risk, cost, schedule and project quality, in the context of the conditions affecting the project.Selection of an effective project delivery strategy requires a detailed appreciation of the range of external and internal environmental / shaping factors which influence the project. These factors include the project constraints imposed by the business, market or operational environments and the selection of an effective mix of primary (head contract), secondary (mix of vertical and horizontal packages) and tertiary (type of individual contract) strategies. The selection of the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies also shapes the project, the size and responsibilities of the ownerÆs team and the framework for delivery of outcomes.How does an owner or prime contractor decide? What is the optimum for a given project? Those with operations management backgrounds will have different views to those with project and construction management backgrounds.Is the simplest practical approach the best approach? Each and every interface needs to be managed.The owner will want a very experienced team that is engaged directly with the owner. The team will have a track record of successfully performing projects using contractors skilled in their respective disciplines and selected using competitive tendering on brilliantly designed scopes of work and good contract terms, with a fully defined project scope and appropriate schedule, for which all significant risks have been addressed and no scope changes are outstanding. Budget and schedule will be expected to have been developed with a full understanding of the scope, situation, risk management requirements etc.The problem is that these conditions rarely exist. The challenge in selection of a project delivery strategy is to resolve how best to address the inadequacies between the ideal case and the present reality. The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

The investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at t,he Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word ''Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy," or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limitJ' has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.' In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, 'compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. "With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.IntroductionOne of the biggest challenges facing the aging infrastructure is the materials loss and deterioration due to corrosion. Many studies indicate that in the US alone, costs due to corrosion loss is more than $276 billion annually (Michiel et al., 2010). Corrosion is the major cause of deterioration of steel structures and components (MNC, 2005). Load bearing steel piles are used as foundations for various types of structures and hence corrosion is very much influenced by the environment such as soil, water and soil-water interface. Corrosion of steel pile foundations may result in reduced capacity in the axial and lateral directions. Hence, understanding the rate of pile corrosion is essential to select the appropriate repair methods to avoid excessive deflection and failure (Decker et al. 2008).To prevent the deterioration mechanisms that attack a pile, it is fundamental both to identify and understand the deterioration mechanism that has been the cause of damage. Understanding the deterioration mechanism allows the engineer to design a repair that will combat this type of damage. It is widely recognized that the corrosion of carbon steel in soil, water and soil-water interface proceeds according to the following simplified anodic reaction and cathodic reactions in the presence of oxygen (Decker et al. 2008)."

"As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. "Mount Isa Mines (MIM) acquired a reputation for the successful application of R&D to develop break-through technologies for the mining industry starting in the 1978’s through until the early 2000’s. The ISAPROCESSTM tank-house technology has been licensed to copper refineries throughout the world, and a significant per cent of the world’s copper is refined using this technology. Since development in the late 1980’s more than 20 ISASMELTTM copper and lead smelting furnaces are now installed in countries around the world. Jameson Cell flotation technology developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines and Professor Graeme Jameson is widely used in the Australian coal mining industry and increasingly in the base-metal and gold industry. The IsaMillTM’s developed at Mount Isa and McArthur River made it possible to develop the McArthur River and George Fisher orebodies and has been successfully implemented into base metal fine grinding applications around the world. The most recent commercialised innovation is the atmospheric leach Albion ProcessTM with its supersonic HyperSpargeTM gas sparger, is being adopted as a solution to the increasing complexity of orebodies. MIM’s contribution to the industry was significant given the size and the remote location of its operations with Townsville Copper Refineries more than 1350 km and Mount Isa 1800 km from the nearest state capital of Brisbane. This paper will briefly discuss the development of each of these technologies and why MIM – now owned by Glencore - was so successful innovating and developing such technologies over a period of nearly 40 years.INTRODUCTION Mount Isa is located in the Gulf Country region of Queensland about 1800 kilometers North West of Brisbane (see Figure 1). It came into existence because of the world class mineral deposits found in the area. In 1923 the orebody containing lead, zinc and silver was discovered by the miner John Campbell Miles. Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) was founded in 1924 to develop the minerals discovered by Miles, but production did not begin until May 1931. It paid its first dividend in 1947 after 16 years of troubled production. In 1954 the 1100 copper orebody was discovered and with rapidly rising reserves during the 1950’s and 1960’s led to the construction of new concentrators to treat lead/zinc/silver ores in 1966 (#2 concentrator) and copper ore’s in 1973 (#4 concentrator). The difficult nature of the Mount Isa lead-zinc orebodies has meant that the company had always needed to be at the forefront of mining technology. In the 1970’s through to the 1990’s, it became a world leader in developing new mining techniques and processing technologies as a response to declining metal prices and rising costs. Mount Isa has been smelting copper since 1953 and lead since the early 1930’s. Copper Refining at Mount Isa’s fully owned subsidiary of Copper Refineries Proprietary Limited (CRL) had commenced operations in 1959."

H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors' reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

One area of study in the Coal Mine Injury Analysis project was to illustrate and enhance the ability of mine safety management personnel to apply analytical techniques to injury experience data and to justify requests for funds for safety enhancement actions on a cost/benefit and other quantitative basis. Four volumes of this final project report detail (1) the objectives and scope of the mine safety management research, (2) the results of literature review, and case studies, and (3) models developed for mine safety management. The four volumes are titled as Volume III: Mine Safety Management, Volume IV: Analytical Techniques for Mine Safety Management; Volume V: Mine Safety Management Case Studies and Volume IX: Training Cost Model. This volume deals with the development of a microcomputer based training cost model (TCM) which can be used to analyze training cost implications of various types of training. The model has been developed using Aston Tate's dBASE III plus language. The computer program and a test run of the model are presented in this report.

"The Aqqaluk deposit is a lead-zinc ore body that lies immediately north of the Main Pit at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in Alaska. It is scheduled to begin production in 2011 or 2012. A project team was formed in late 2004 to plan and implement an ore characterisation and metallurgical evaluation on the Aqqaluk ore. The main objective of this program was to facilitate the transition from Main Pit to Aqqaluk ore in the Red Dog concentrator. The program will develop a detailed, spatially-oriented characterisation of the Aqqaluk deposit attributes including lithology, ore geochemistry, bulk mineralogy, ore texture, as well as evaluating the metallurgical characteristics of ore hardness, process water geochemistry, bench-scale floatability and mineral liberation in ground feed, concentrate and tails. Developing correlations between the metallurgical response and the ore characterisation data is key to the emerging science of geometallurgy. This on-going program is a technical due diligence study that aims to reduce the risk associated with processing a new ore and to provide predictive information for mining and stockpile preparation.The test work to date has focused on characterising the five ore zones currently identified in the Aqqaluk deposit, namely: Siliceous (sub-divided to High Zn:Fe and Low Zn:Fe), Vein, Median Plate and Baritic ores. It identified a number of challenges associated with surface oxidation, or weathering, of the core samples and outlined a program for future sample collection and storage. Metallurgical testing evaluated ore hardness by a variety of methods. Preliminary floatability studies have been completed and some initial links have been established between the ore characteristics and the flotation response. Soluble mineral weathering products, the relative abundance of pyrite and marcasite and the iron content in the sphalerite grains have all shown a correlation to mineral recovery.As new core is received, both the ore characterisation and the metallurgical testing will be continued with a view to strengthen the existing correlations and develop new links."

The new Paradisus Coco Beach Resort in Rio Grande (PR) is located on an old swamp area, which has been filled with relatively clean to silty sands. The swampy deposits consists of organic silts, peat and loose fine to medium sand and silty sand. The project requires the placement of 1.0 to 1.5 meters of additional fill together with the construction of light structures. The need for the fill will trigger the development of settlements in the underlaying weak and compressible stratum. Furthermore, the susceptibility of the loose sand to liquefaction during an earthquake was considered. This paper describes the soil improvement by means of vibro-replacement, the purpose of which was threefold: reduction in total and differential settlement, acceleration of settlements during the surcharge period and densification of the loose sand to reduce its liquefaction potential. The predesign is presented together with relevant construction details of the preliminary trial areas from which the final column diameter and grid spacing were derived. Instrumentation together with settlement observations during the surcharge period are presented as well and compared with the initial predictions.

A relatively inexpensive, very fast response photo-optic/fiberoptic system has been conceived, constructed and employed by Denver Research Institute (DRI) to measure charge breakout uniformity on the surface of a very large ANFO detonation. The new equipment and technique was coined OWL (observation without leads). Its unique design provides the ability to monitor or measure detonation velocities and/or detonation breakout characteristics without fiberoptic or any other direct contact with the explosive. This system has proven to be versatile and has been used to measure surface breakout simultaneity on large ANFO detonations, munition case breakout times and velocity of detonation (VOD).

The Bureau of Mines' Oil Shale Data Bank (OSDB) was created in 1976 to serve as a centralized source for the storage, retrieval, and dissemination of technical literature, patents, and information on research projects in oil shale. Thousands of bibliographic references, patents, and research projects relating to the mining of oil shale have been identified, abstracted, and indexed according to selected keyword topics. The resulting data bank listings are contained in three sections, each with a separate keyword breakdown for use in rapidly identifying references pertaining to a specific subject. All references cited in the OSDB were published prior to an established cut-off date of May 1, 1981, when a redirection of Bureau of Mines programs resulted in the loss of project funds and the subsequent phasing-out of data bank operations. Accurate determination of platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold (Au) has always proven to be a difficult task, due to their low concentrations in platiniferous ores. The most common preconcentration technique used in analysis of these metals is fire assay with a flux containing nickel or lead. This technique can be improved by using co-collectors. Here we hypothesise that Fe, Co, and Cu can be used as co-collectors to enhance separation and preconcentration of PMGs and gold by fire assay. To test this hypothesis, geological exploration samples from Siyanda Union Mine (Northam, South Africa) were analysed by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) for PGMs (Pt, Pd, and Rh) and Au. A control sample (certified reference material AMIS 0426) was also analysed by the same technique. The PGM and Au recoveries from the control sample ranged from 83% to 105% for all three co-collectors, with relative standard deviations less than 10% for the control sample and 7% for the geological samples. The PGM and Au recoveries by Fe and Co co-collectors were modestly higher than that of the Cu-collector. These results indicate that Fe and Co are better co-collectors than Cu, presumably due to the loss of analyte when using Cu. Taken together, Fe and Co co-collectors can be viable alternatives for analysis of PGMs and gold using the fire assay method.
