Environmental Considerations With significant increases in bulk coal movements through terminals, operators are under constant social and political pressure to reduce or remove environmental pollution problems incidental to their operations. To meet these requirements, both equipment manufacturers and terminal designers are endeavoring to design equipment and systems with stringent environmental controls. The most challenging environmental problems facing coal terminal designers and developers are terminal siting restrictions, dust control, and noise abatement. Terminal Siting Finding a suitable site can be a difficult problem because of public concern over coal dust or the impact of a terminal on the surrounding community or natural habitat of the area. Often the only suitable flat land available for terminal development is on a tidal estuary or salt water marsh with great environmental value. In many cases a period of four to six years of full environmental and social assessment has been needed. A recent example of such difficulties is the expansion at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, where environmental impact assessment studies and their public review took almost six years from initial expansion applications until the time of approval. Dust Control Modern coal terminal dust control techniques usually consist of water sprays at strategic locations to suppress dust. The application points include rail car or barge dumper, main conveyor transfers, perimeter sprays around stockpiles, stacker/reclaimer, ship-loader transfers, and loading spout. The water sprays may include a chemical wetting agent or surfactant to reduce the water requirement and increase effectiveness. Recently there have been advances with development of effective micro foam agglomerating agents. In these systems, a micro foam with very small bubble sizes is sprayed into the coal stream. The foam fills the interstices between coal particles and wets the coal fines. These systems have proven to be very effective and usually one application before stockpiling and one upon reclaiming will markedly reduce the coal dusting. Stockpile perimeter sprays can be operated either manually or at the sophisticated terminal, actuated by a computerized control system that senses key environmental conditions such as humidity, precipitation, and wind velocity. Most modern terminals collect the drainage from the stockpile area, remove the solids in settling basins, then recirculate the water to reduce water requirements and effluents from the site. Dusting of long-term storage stockpiles can be reduced by spraying the piles with chemical resin or latex binding compounds to seal the surface. These compounds also can minimize erosion of the pile by rainfall. Dust collection with air evacuation systems and cyclone or wet scrubbers can be used at key areas such as rail car dumpers, main conveyor transfers, and ship-loader spouts. The trend in dust control is away from dust collection since most dust collectors are high maintenance items requiring good operator supervision and servicing. Coal handling conveyors are usually open and uncovered. However, in areas requiring special attention they may be covered or even completely enclosed. Dust generation from terminal roads is often a significant amount of the total dust emitted from a terminal. To reduce this dusting, roadways where traffic is heavy can be paved or sprayed by water trucks. Speed limits can be enforced and use of tracked mobile equipment for stockpile handling rather than rubber-tired loaders is encouraged by authorities. Noise Abatement Terminals located close to residential areas are often faced with noise control problems. Noise can be one of the most difficult environmental problems to solve. Usually, use of electrically-powered equipment is encouraged to reduce noise levels. Rail car dumper houses can be totally enclosed to reduce both dust and noise emissions. The Bureau of Mines investigated hot-rolling and forging characteristics of experimental ductile iron castings, both sand and permanent-mold, made with charges containing up to 70 pct foundry pig iron and 95 pct steelmaking pig iron. Between 1,550° and 1,950° F, most castings could be rolled to 90-pct reduction or forged to 70-pct reduction without serious cracking. Charge and composition have less bearing on workability than on subsequent properties. Permanent mold castings could be worked as readily as sand castings at 1,750° and 1,950° F. Plasticity improved with temperature. Small billets were also forged cold to 50-pct reduction without cracking. With equivalent nodularity, composition affects properties of wrought materials by altering matrix structure and strength. Properties vary with reduction and improve with increasing working temperature. Rolled material has high strength and anisotropy, and low ductility, particularly in the trans-verse direction. Annealing reduces strength and improves ductility, but anisotropy persists. At 70-pct reduction, impact resistance in the longitudinal direction is about twice that in the transverse. Annealing roughly doubles impact resistance. Deformation enhances damping capacity. The feasibility of die-forging and bar-rolling of ductile iron was evaluated in trial tests conducted under a Bureau contract. Although workability and ductility of ductile iron are inferior to those of steel, more advantage could be taken of ductile iron's plasticity to work rough shapes to final dimensions.

"The Copper Concentrator Plant of Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi (CMDIC) is composed of three grinding lines, the third one being the largest. Due to the capacity feature of the third line, specially its SAG mill, it is a priority that the advanced process control team of the Company deploys a supervisory control strategy that allows this unit to operate in an optimal way, in order to achieve the maximum productivity at minimum cost. It is in this kind of tasks where advanced control applications play a key role in obtaining the best economic profit of the process.The advanced process control team, formed by people from Informatics, Automation and Operations of CMDIC have assumed the challenge of generating the transition from a manual SAG Mill 1011 operation (40 x 22 feet, the largest copper SAG mill of the world), to a fully automatic SAG Mill using a multivariable control strategy instead of a rule based on expert control system (widely used in industrial mining process control applications).Therefore, CMDIC decided to work together with Honeywell APC Team implementing an advanced automatic control strategy for the SAG Mill 1011, using for this purpose a technology called Model Based Predictive Control (MPC), based on a variety of control methods that uses dynamical models of the process, obtained from input/output data, in order to print the process knowledge into a group of mathematical relationships that links the constraints (controlled variables) with available commands (manipulated variables) and measured disturbances.The main objective of the advanced control strategy is to ensure process government, tending to throughput stability and optimization, by the execution of coordinated control actions, proactively avoiding measured disturbances effects and the SAG mill overloading.The most important benefits of using a multivariable control strategy are: the automated operation of SAG mill 1011 (that was manually operated before the implementation of this application), a safer, more coordinated and more stable process operation, achieving through this an increase of throughput and a decrease of specific energy consumption, controlling the amount of oversize material production, power consumption, mill loading, noise and torque. In addition to the operational results, this challenge has consolidated a control team, with the participation of engineers and operators, diminishing the typical implementation time and achieving a greater use of the application in a short time."

MINING rock asphalt for use as a paving material is an industry which has grown with the spread of the good roads movement. "Mineral Industry During 1930" reports asphaltic pavements constructed, including maintenance and repair but excluding pavement constructed with road-oil, cut-back or emulsified asphalt, as grown from 23 million square yards in 1911 to a high of 144 million in 1927. In 1930 the same source reports 106 million square yards of such paving laid and, in that year, 664,871 tons of native rock asphalt were so utilized. Many states contain rock asphalt deposits of greater or less importance but in only a few places are the de¬posits being mined commercially. In the year cited Ken¬tucky produced 305,024 tons of bituminous sandstone, Texas 270,138 tons, mostly bituminous limestone, while Alabama, Oklahoma, California and Utah produced 89,709 tons of bituminous rock for road construction. In addition Utah produced 37,906 tons of the purer asphaltic products, gilsonite, wurtzilite and ozokerite, for other uses. Speaking generally, the rock asphalt is a sandstone or limestone naturally impregnated with asphalt to an extent that makes it an ideal road surfacing material without mixing or treatment other than crushing. The asphalt content of the commercial product runs 8 to 12 per cent.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. "This paper discusses how elemental analysis of conveyed bulk flows in real time using PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology has resulted in significant improvements in advancing plant control in mineral processing operations. PGNAA through belt, full stream, continuous, multi-elemental, real time analysis technology is explained. Capabilities and limitations in plant operating environments are discussed including comparison with other real time, on-line technologies through review of published information available for on-conveyor minerals applications. Case studies include an iron ore and copper-gold company, both of which consider the technology an essential component in advanced plant control necessary in new process flow sheet designs, rather than an optimisation tool.INTRODUCTION Process operators rely on supply of a reasonable ore quality and consistency from the mine. Unfortunately neither the mining nor process operators have much control over the ore quality once it has been put into the crusher. Grade control typically stops once the material is designated as ore and the process plant operator needs to process it irrespective of quality. Plant control is most effective when technologies measure process streams directly and preferably in real time. Measuring sampling streams that are not representative of the primary flow will result in incorrect plant control decisions. Sampling coarse conveyed flows is expensive and impractical at many operations, however, this does not mean those flows cannot be measured. Investigations to find techniques suitable for real time elemental analysis have focussed on the application of known laboratory techniques to process streams. For conveyed applications, development of neutron irradiation techniques were most promising and early studies indicated potential success for bauxite measurement (Beurton et al, 1995). Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to PGNAA in terms of material penetration power and that the technology was eminently suitable for basic industries such as cement. Nelson and Riddle (2003) evaluated PGNAA for possible use in the phosphate industry by using a unit installed in a cement plant to test performance on phosphate samples and ultimately recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control"

Tremendous improvements in mining technology have been witnessed during the past 100 years. For example, before 1860 all blastholes were drilled manually and blasting was done with low-energy black-powder. During the 1860's both the pneumatic rock drill and high-energy dynamite were introduced, ushering in an era of mining mechanization that has steadily progressed since that time. Today, with the rapid implementation of the latest advances in communication science, mining technology is moving into a new era that goes beyond mechanization as such. Transistors, transducers, scanners, telemetry, and the like, all terms largely derived from the new communication sciences, add up to what is popularly know as automation-the communication of machine with machine. Automation is now playing an important role in selected parts of the mining process, such as hoisting, hydraulic roof supports, and underground surface locomotive haulage and belt conveyor systems. But this year marked the first attempt to auto-mate the total mining process with the commencement of production at the British National Coal Boards Bevercotes mine. If this full-scale experiment proves successful, it could lead towards other fully automated mines in both Britain and other parts of the world. This decade, there-fore, could be considered the one that provided the foundation for the mines of the future.

"Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

Construction contracts in the USA contain the clause "Value Engineering" ? an interesting and curious clause allowing contractor initiated design changes. Misleading is the interpretation of value engineering implying cost saving and sharing with the owner, and curious is the timing, just before beginning of actual construction. It is not surprising that such a clause would simply be ignored, because it involves change, often major design changes in very short time; and change is feared, moreover, it is vehemently resisted by all parties, owner, designer, contractor. The problem in the USA may lie in the divergence and separation of the two entities: Designer/Engineer and Builder/Contractor, assigned to the "one" engineering project. The priorities and incentives of these two groups are very different. The Engineer spends years, even decades, in design and prepares contract drawings often without a deep understanding of construction methods. Worse, with all the time available to him and in our era of tremendous advances in computational methods and speed, the designer turns in plans that are inexcusably exaggerated code-based design with excessive safety factors. As to the Contractor, he builds, often without appreciation of design principles or regard for design engineers. Redesign to apply a new technology or optimization of an inferior design just before construction becomes unthinkable. It is not surprising that adverse and hostile relationship between the designer and the contractor is a norm with extended disputes and claims, not to mention the cost these entail. Surprisingly, "Value Engineering" was successfully implemented in record speed on several very large projects in the metropolitan New York area. The process of change was unconventional, painful, and even comical. Four case studies are presented: two Design/Build: the 1.2 billion dollars Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System in New Jersey and the 90 million dollars MTA Bus Depot in Manhattan, and two Conventional Design/Bid/Build: the 90 million dollars Queens Boulevard Bridge and the 150 million dollars Long Island Expressway.

Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

This article deals with the effects of high-explosive and nuclear explosions in rock masses. We first highlight the strong influence of geological discontinuities, such as joints and faults, on ground motion characteristics. Then, we briefly introduce the Discrete Element Method, as a new technique for numerical simulations. II is shown to be far superior to continuum-based approaches, when dealing with the dynamics of discontinuous media such as jointed rocks. Finally, we simulate the ground effects from a generic contained nuclear explosion, which bears some similarity to the SHOAL event in granite. This calculation is intended to emphasize the influence of the near-source geology on the distribution of energy, and on the motion at various azimuths in the medium.

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

"The McArthur River uranium deposit is the single richest uranium ore body developed in the world to date. The ore body’s average grade is 15% U3O8. Proven reserves are in excess of 450 million pounds. The grinding circuit is located underground. The ground ore is pumped to a surface facility where the slurry is thickened and loaded into containers for shipping to the Key Lake mill 78 kilometers to the south.The paper will briefly describe the mining method employed. The underground ore handling and grinding circuit, and surface facilities including slurry load out, wastewater treatment and the freeze plant will be described in detail. The paper will emphasize radiation and safety procedures that are followed to minimize operator exposure to radiation risks.LOCATIONThe McArthur River mine is located 78 kilometres north of the Key Lake mill. It is located at latitude 57’ N in northern Saskatchewan, within the southern boundary of the Athabasca formation. The nearest town is Pinehouse, located 320 kilometres to the south. Access to the mine is by an all weather road and by a private airstrip.HISTORYThe McArthur River Operation is jointly owned by Cameco Corporation (69.805%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (30.195%). Exploration for uranium in the McArthur River area started in 1980 by the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, a predecessor company of Cameco.In 1984, a 12-kilometre long basement conductor was identified at a depth exceeding 500 metres. Systematic exploration drilling of this conductor resulted in the discovery of the P2 North deposit. Subsequent surface drilling programs from 1989 to 1992 delineated a narrow ore zone over a strike length of 1700 meters at a depth of 500 to 600 metres. At this time, geological reserves for the deposit were estimated to be 2.4 million tonnes at a grade of 5.0% U3O8 for a uranium content of 260 million pounds U308"

In the minerals industry allocating capital for setting up a new project or for upgrading an existing facility usually requires that a compromise be found between the initial cost of equipment, its operating performance and on-going operating costs. To maximise the return on the investment usually requires that various possible combinations and layouts of equipment be assessed. This task is both difficult and time consuming. Computer simulation can be used as a means of determining the expected operating performance of a range of alternate equipment configurations. Simulation is a particularly important technique for analysis as it is one of the few approaches that allows the analyst to take into account the variability inherent in a mining process. While computer simulation is a well established technique its use, until recent years, has been limited to large organisations with access to substantial computing facilities. However, with the current availability of low cost computing platforms combined with easily understood animated displays, simulation is now becoming more widely used across the industry.

We present an analysis of the propagation in a uniform tunnel of semi -circular cross section that contains two axial conductors. In particular, we show that, even if one of these conductors has high ohmic loss, one of the two propagating modes has relatively low attenuation. This corresponds to the situation where an unloaded dedicated wire is used to improve radio frequency communication in a mine tunnel that contains a heavily loaded trolley wire.

This paper describes the method used for excavating the upper 33m of emergency access shaft E2 for the underground single track tunnel running between Park and Rosebank station of the Gautrain Rapid Rail System. The soil was decomposed shale and diabase from the Witwatersrand Supergroup. The location was in the car park of The Wilds (a public park) in Johannesburg. The method proved very simple and required less complex plant and equipment than normal when excavating the shallow soil sections in shafts. It involves driving steel sheets ahead of the shaft sump into the soils and then excavating inside the ?tub? created by the sheets whilst supporting the sheets above with regularly spaced circular Steel Rings. It is the intent of this paper to discuss the method and design approach to the method. This will be done at the hand of experiences at E2 shaft..
