The Mini-DiscTM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rockdrill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-DiscTM drill bit, referred to as the “Disc Bit” has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory can not shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. [ ] South Africa, by a wide margin, is blessed with the largest known world reserves of platinum. The optimal use of these resources for the benefit of all South Africa?s peoples is a goal shared by industry, government and all South Africans. The challenge is to grow the industry in accordance with demand growth and thus to manage a long-term stable growth pattern for PGM usage world-wide. Amplats and the South African producers are well able to meet this challenge [ ] South Africa plays a critical role in the provision of Platinum Group Metals for world markets. In fact no other country has the productive capacity nor the geological reserves to supply the world?s platinum needs. The world required some 5 million ounces of Platinum in 1997 and South Africa supplied a full 74% thereof. The second major supplier, Russia provided a further 18% of world demand, primarily as a by-product of nickel production. Amplats satisfied about 37% of total world demand followed by Impala 20% and Lonhro at 12%.

The ConRoast process for the production of platinum group metals involves the use of a fluidized bed reactor for the removal of sulphur from ore concentrates by roasting prior to smelting in a DC-arc furnace. Test work was carried out in 2007 at Hazen Research in Golden, Colorado to provide the data necessary for a commercial roaster to be designed by Technip. This paper discusses the rationale behind the test work, the goals for calcine composition to be used as smelting furnace feed, the results of various roaster operating parameters in terms of calcine composition (particularly residual sulphur and the fate of trace elements), and the impact of the results in terms of a commercial roaster design.

The value of mineral production in Alabama continued to increase and reached a new high of $260 million, 3 percent above the previous high established in 1967. Record high values were reported for bentonite, crushed marble, lime, miscellaneous clay, portland cement, salt, sand and gravel, and scrap mica. The value of coal, total cement, petroleum, and stone accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in kaolin, masonry cement, and native asphalt.

The mining industry has recognised for some time the importance of supporting programs which serve to educate the Australian public about the socio-economic benefits of mineral resource development. More recently, industry leaders have realised that the future development of the industry will depend on attracting sufficient young people to commit to a career in the industry. Apart from lending support to the traditional education institutions in Australia, the industry now has the opportunity to participate in the development of education programs in museums. Whilst historic, mining-related theme parks such as Sovereign Hill and Coal Creek in Victoria serve very effectively the objective of relating past mining activities to the socio-economic development of Australia, there still exists the need to provide a facility which, under the same roof, excites interest in geology, mining, mineral processing and the role of minerals and energy in modern society. The redeveloped Geological and Mining Museum (the "Mining Museum"), which is located in The Rocks area of Sydney, meets this objective. With the central themes of formation and transformation this new Museum, which aims to be the best of its type in the world, will use modern museum exhibit techniques and the resources of the Minerals and Energy Information Centre to educate the community including teachers and school children. In the best tradition of museums, outstanding mineral and other collections will complement a comprehensive range of interactive, high technology exhibits which will include a number of exploratory "hands on" facilities. Australian companies are joining with Government to fund this exciting new museum. There is still a need for industry professionals to realise that a modern "mining" museum is no longer just a repository for objects of mining heritage but is also an important centre which serves as an important educational and public relations interface. The Education Section of the new "Mining Museum", which is linked closely with the new Minerals and Energy Information Centre, will be working closely with appropriate mining-related Tertiary institutions to develop specific career programs aimed at secondary students who wish to pursue a career in the mineral resource industries.

A numerical model for use in design is developed to predict the stresses and axial and bending displacements in a drilled pier in expansive soils. The prediction is based on the horizontal swelling pressures and uplift forces which act on the side of the drilled pier. The exponential suction envelope with the depth within the moisture active zone is estimated based upon the equilibrium suction, moisture diffusion coefficients obtained from laboratory tests, and minimum suction at the ground surface of the site based on field conditions. The volume change of soil is based on suction variations, soil properties, overburden pressures, crack influences, and the relationship between moisture contents and suctions. Considering the movement active and anchor zones on a soil-pile system in expansive soils, horizontal swelling pressures are formulated using the shear strength of an unsaturated soil and the Mohr?s circle and failure envelope. The movement active zone has two sub-zones in which horizontal swelling pressures are attributed to passive earth pressure failure and suction change in the upper and lower sub-zones, respectively. Horizontal swelling pressures which occur in the anchor zone are assumed to be in the at rest condition. The shear stress generated on the vertical surface of a drilled pier is supported by the nonlinear curves of load transfer versus relative displacement. The axial behavior and lateral bending of the pier in expansive soils are simulated using a beam column approach. The computed axial and bending displacements and stresses are used to provide structural design of the pier. Figures of computed results for typical cases are presented.

It is known that the CaO-FetO-P2O5slag system has a wide liquid miscibility gap at steelmaking temperatures and this two-liquid slag phase has many advantages such as high activities of both FetO and CaO and high amount of P2O5. The phosphorus distribution ratio between the two-liquid slag and molten steel was confirmed to be higher than that between CaOsat.-FetO-P2O5slag and molten steel. The two-liquid slag may be useful for dephosphorization of molten steel and reduction of slag volume. Furthermore, the phase equilibrium of two-liquid CaO-FetO-P2O5slagsaturated with MgO was measured to determine the applicability of the two-liquid slag to dephosphorization in steelmaking process. The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s Roof Control Division responded to a massive ground failure at an underground marble mine in northern Georgia. The ground failure occurred in a benched area that had been abandoned in the early 1990s. It involved the failure of an estimated 19 pillars, in conjunction with a massive roof fall of an undetermined extent that was at least 60 ft high. Pillars in the benched area had been mined nominally 40 x 40 feet to a height of 50 feet ft, with 40-ft mining widths, although it seems likely from measurements and accounts from mining personnel that pillars were even smaller than intended. Average overburden depth was 500 ft, and the rock mass was characterized by three sets of intersecting geological discontinuities that not only defined very blocky conditions that were conducive to pillar spalling and volume loss, but they were also adversely oriented in such a way as to cut diagonally through pillars at a high angle. The recently released S-Pillar software from NIOSH was used to determine pillar safety factors in the failure area and indicated that pillars were undersized for the conditions. S-Pillar was used to assess pillar stability in active areas to evaluate the likelihood of experiencing similar collapses in the future. S-Pillar correctly identified the pillars in the bench area as having been at risk for instability, in light of their ultimate failure. A two-dimensional finite element model was used to evaluate the possible stages of failure and to assess the likelihood of continued failure in the benched area that might affect more distal mine openings. Although stone mines are generally characterized as having more forgiving conditions than those found in softer sedimentary rocks, the failure shares some characteristics with domino-style massive pillar collapses experienced in coal and trona mines. First, the minimum dimension of the benched area approached 350 ft; second, the pillars defined by benching had small width-to-height ratios (0.8), and; third, the pillar failure area was slightly greater than 4 acres. The massive pillar collapse and associated roof fall illustrate the importance of incorporating pillars that have been properly sized for depth and for the final bench height. Furthermore, the designed dimensions must be adhered to during the actual mining process. Finally, the importance of understanding the geological conditions and their effect on the rock mass is critical.

"From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into free-milling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy are largely driven by mineralogical factors such as: gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide mineral structure etc. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore. This paper will provide a broad review of gold process mineralogy and the techniques available, and use case studies to describe how they can be used together, to provide the complete picture of gold process mineralogy in an ore. Examples will be used where applicable.INTRODUCTIONSince the early 1980’s, a great deal of work has been done in the characterization of gold ores, particularly refractory ores (Gasparrini, 1983; Wang, 1984; Hausen, 1985; Haines, 1986; Henley, 1989; Chryssoulis et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1992, 1994; Kojonen, 1999; Simon et al., 1999; Hong et al., 2000; Pals et al, 2003). Process mineralogy has come into its own as a respected inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and metallurgy – a subject that occupies an important place in both research and industry. As the free-milling gold ores are being depleted and more refractory ores are being discovered and processed, gold process mineralogy receives more and more attention from both the mineralogist and metallurgist as it helps to solve various problems encountered during gold ore processing. Steadily rising gold prices are also stimulating the need for gold process mineralogy due to the increasing demand for and production of the yellow metal. At SGS Lakefield Research, gold process mineralogy studies are conducted routinely on all types of gold ores and mill products to assist in a wide variety of metallurgical projects. JUDGING by the progressive atmosphere prevailing in the nonmetallic mineral industries during the past year, postwar conditions were healthful though inflationary. Demand for most industrial mineral products has been exceptionally high and many new production records were attained. Severe shortages of some commodities existed, especially building materials and fertilizers. Production costs and prices increased and profitable operation was general. Under these conditions expansion programs were the order of the day. Ample funds were available to finance the purchase of good equipment; and, as wages and other operating costs were increasing, primary emphasis was placed on attaining maximum efficiency in new installations. These efforts were hampered by shortages and slow delivery of desirable equipment, so compromises in design were often necessary. However, on the whole, production practice improved.

A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

"HudBay’s Constancia project is a copper molybdenum concentrator located in southern Peru. In 2010 Ausenco was contracted to perform a feasibility study optimization review which resulted in an improved design with significantly increased throughput capacity at a minimal increase in capital cost. Construction began in 2012 with commercial operation commencing in May 2015. This paper outlines the process plant design as well as describing the plant’s major equipment selections, start-up and early operations experiences.IntroductionHudBay Mineral’s Constancia project is located at 4200 meters above sea level (masl) in southern Peru, approximately 630 km south-east of Lima, Peru. The property can be accessed by road from Cusco, Peru, (approximately 110 km to the north), or from Arequipa, Peru (approximately 215 km to the south). Matarani, accessed via Arequipa, is the closest port.Constancia is located within the Yauri-Andahuaylas metallogenic belt. The region contains several large copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry deposits such as Antapaccay (by Glencore) and Los Chancas (by Grupo Mexico), and copper skarn deposits such as Tintaya (by Glencore) and Las Bambas (by MMG). Constancia’s ore reserves contain copper and molybdenum with trace amounts of gold and silver.Ore is mined by an open-pit operation. The process plant recovers copper and molybdenum concentrates, storing tailings in a conventional tailings management facility. Infrastructure at the site includes a grid power supply (via a 70 km overhead transmission line from Tintaya), water supply, workshops and an accommodation camp. Mine life is 22 years.Site construction works began in 2012 with first copper concentrate produced in late 2014. The project was executed for approximately 1.75B$USD.Ausenco’s design approach focussed on developing a capital efficient copper molybdenum concentrator. This paper outlines key features incorporated in the concentrator design, plant layout and equipment selection, as well as start-up experiences and early operational results."

"Abstract The content of Eurocode 7 – Part 1 and Part 2 – with respect to piled foundations is outlined. The important role of pile testing is presented and the derivation of the characteristic value of pile bearing resistance is explained. Recommendations for the use of correlation factors are given. The ongoing work of the Evolution Groups on piling is to prepare a revision of Eurocode 7 after 2019. Future topics and changes are highlighted.General outline of pile design by Eurocode 7In his paper for this conference Frank (2014) outlined the various aspects of standardisation for pile foundations, which involves Eurocode 7 as leading for pile construction in Europe. Standards for pile testing and execution of piling works were established in the last 15 years.This paper focuses on the design of piled foundations according to the design code Eurocode 7, which consists of 2 parts:EN 1997-1 Geotechnical design - Part 1: General Rules (CEN, 2004);EN 1997-2 Geotechnical design – Part 2: Ground investigation and testing (CEN, 2007) In Eurocode 7-1, Section 7 – Pile Foundations - deals with the design of piles. The safety concept for pile design is given in Section 2 – Basis of Geotechnical Design - for the three Design Approaches.In Section 7 presents the design of piles according to four methods:1. Results of static load tests2. Empirical or analytical calculation methods3. Results of dynamic load tests4. Observed performance of a comparable pile foundation.Guidelines for the ground investigation for piles is provided in Eurocode 7-2, Annex B.3. In the Annexes of Eurocode 7-2 examples of analytical methods to determine the bearing resistance of a single pile based on the results of various ground investigation techniques are given. Thus calculation models are presented based on design using the results of Cone Penetration Tests (D.6 and D.7) and Pressuremeter Tests (E.3). This is the detailed evaluation of the establishment and implementation of an ‘oil recycle plant’ located on site at Boggabri Mine NSW, (Australia); its production, its use and its value. Also discussed in detail is the quality of the raw material produced, and the process and initial application of this raw material generated as well as the analysis of such, as a component within bulk explosive as applied to the mining industry as compiled during analysis. Laboratory analysis prior to field testing is also discussed including independent external laboratory analysis as well as the environmental benefits and a business case for recycled oil in blasting. This paper includes technical details of the product including densities, velocity of detonation and other associated key performance indicators. The intention is to off-set the amount of Distillate (Diesel) utilised as a component of bulk explosives, with a raw recycled oil and thus reducing both the environmental carbon footprint as well as production costs with regard to introduced petrochemical production and utilisation; an oil that is an existing recourse of controlled waste not only difficult but expensive to otherwise dispose of, whilst keeping the entire process ‘on-site’. Though recycled oil in blasting is not an entirely original idea, the key feature of this paper is the ability to complete the entire process on-site.
