Mineral exploration programmes around the world use data from remote sensing, geophysics, and direct sampling. On a regional scale, the combination of airborne geophysics and ground-based geochemical sampling can aid geological mapping and mineral exploration. Since airborne geophysical and traditional soil-sampling data are generated at different spatial resolutions, they are not immediately comparable due to their different sampling density. Several geostatistical techniques, including indicator cokriging and collocated cokriging, can be used to integrate different types of data into a geostatistical model. However, with increasing numbers of variables the inference of the crosscovariance model required for cokriging can be demanding in terms of effort and computational time. In this paper a Gaussian-based Bayesian updating approach is applied to integrate airborne radiometric data and ground-sampled geochemical soil data to maximize information generated from the soil survey, enabling more accurate geological interpretation for the exploration and development of natural resources. The Bayesian updating technique decomposes the collocated estimate into two models: prior and likelihood models. The prior model is built from primary information and the likelihood model is built from secondary information. The prior model is then updated with the likelihood model to build the final model. The approach allows multiple secondary variables to be simultaneously integrated into the mapping of the primary variable. The Bayesian updating approach is demonstrated using a case study from Northern Ireland. The geostatistical technique was used to improve the resolution of soil geochemistry, at a density of one sample per 2 km2, by integrating more closely measured airborne geophysical data from the GSNI Tellus Survey, measured over a footprint of 65 x 200 m. The directly measured geochemistry data were considered as primary data and the airborne radiometric data were used as secondary data. The approach produced more detailed updated maps and in particular enhanced information on the mapped distributions of zinc, copper, and lead. The enhanced delineation of an elongated northwest/southeast trending zone in the updated maps strengthened the potential for discovering stratabound base metal deposits..

A 200-foot diameter, 72-foot high petroleum storage tank was built in a hillside ravine where a portion of the site contained soft clay fill. Soil-cement piles, 40 inches in diameter and up to 38 feet long, were installed to support the tank shell and ringwall, and a portion of the tank floor by drilling into the stiff to hard underlying soils and weathered bedrock. The goal was to provide a strong enough foundation to resist the seismic tank shell loading and to minimize differential settlement of the tank shell to avoid out-of-round clearance problems between the shell and floating-roof. A cantilevered retaining wall up to 8 feet high was constructed around a portion of the tank perimeter by inserting steel H-beams into soil-cement piles. The cantilever soldier piles for the retaining wall were installed from a temporary earth embankment on the hillside directly over the top of the wall. The temporary embankment was then removed and the tank pad was cut to grade in front of the soldier piles. Some of the soil-cement piles for both the tank foundation and retaining wall could not be advanced to design depth because the drill/mixing tools could not penetrate to the required depth in the hard soils/bedrock. Smaller diameter borings (22 inches in diameter) were drilled through the centers of the short-of-design soil-cement piles to the design depth and then backfilled with concrete.

The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. "Abstract: The use of micropiles has greatly increased the last twenty years, including applications involving low capacity micropile networks, seismic retrofitting, underpinning of existing foundations and high capacity foundations for new structures. This paper presents a field study of the behaviour of single hollow core micropiles in firm to stiff lean clay. Eight micropiles were installed using hollow bars (76 mm OD and 48 mm ID) with air/water flushing technique and advanced to a depth of 5.75m: six micropiles were installed using 228 mm (9 in) drill bit and two micropiles were installed using 178 mm (7 in) drill bit. All micropiles were instrumented with linear potentiometers to measure the vertical displacement of the micropile head and vibrating wire strain gauges to measure the axial strain at three points along the micropile length. Twelve full scale tests were conducted on the eight micropiles, four monotonic compression, four cyclic compression and four tension tests. Only the results of micropiles tested under monotonic compression is presented in this paper. The full scale load tests and a comparison of the performance of the micropiles with 228 mm and 178 mm drill bit are presented and discussed in terms of load-displacement curves, bond strength and tip resistance. The results showed that the proposed values of bond strength in FHWA give a conservative design of the hollow core micropiles. The micropiles constructed with 228 mm drill bit performed marginallybetter than the micropile with 178 mm drill bit in terms of the ultimate capacity.IntroductionMicropiles have been defined in a variety of ways, but can universally be classified as small diameter (less than 300mm), bored, and grouted in place piles (FHWA, 2005; Bruce et al., 1999; and Scherer et al., 1996). They can sustain axial (compression and tension) and/or lateral loads. Dr. Fernando Lizzi used micropiles in 1952 for underpinning of historic buildings damaged during World War II (Bruce D. A., 1988). Since then, micropile applications have expanded rapidly to include underpinning for existing foundations, in situ reinforcement, and seismic retrofitting and foundations for new construction. In particular, micropiles have graduated from use in low-capacity micropile networks toapplications as single high-capacity foundation.Micropiles capacity is affected by the construction technique, which involves drilling, placing reinforcement, and placing or pressurizing the grout. For example, the drilling method influences the degree of bonding between the grout and the ground, and the placement of reinforcement and the choice of grouting method have an impact on the development of the bonding. Bruce et al. (1997) showed that grout/ground bond is most affected by the grouting method. Based on the type of pressure applied during the grouting process, micropiles are classified as follows (FHWA, 2005): Type A: grout is placed under gravity pressure only using either sand-cement mortars or neat cement grout. Type B: pressures typically in the range of 0.5 MPa to 1 MPa are applied in order to inject the neat cement grout into the drilled hole while the temporary drill casing is withdrawn. Type C: involves two-step process; neat cement grout is first placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only as in type A, and prior to the hardening of this primary grout, a similar grout is then injected via a preplaced sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of at least 1 MPa. Type D: like type C, this type is a twostep process: neat cement grout is placed in the hole under gravity pressure head only (but pressure could be applied in some cases), additional grout is injected via a sleeved grout pipe at a pressure of 2 MPa to 8 MPa once the primary grout has hardened. Remnant pillars evolve towards the latter stages of mining in an orebody and act as repositories of mining-induced stress. It is therefore crucial to plan ahead as to their dimensions and location with respect to the local geology. A case study of a Canadian base metal mine was examined for the planned mining sequence scenario to identify the stress regimes acting on a future remnant pillar occurring between levels 4800 and 5100, near a brittle dyke. A mine-wide model was constructed in FLAC3D and input parameters included results from field measurements of the direction and magnitude of the principal stresses, and the geomechanical properties of the different formations. Prior to the study, the model was calibrated based on a 6-year record of mining-induced seismicity and rockburst events, focusing on large event clusters. The mining sequence followed at the mine was then used in the model to study the planned future extraction program around the remnant pillar. It is shown that the distance of the remnant pillar from the dyke and another orebody plays an influential role on the stress levels developed in the pillar.

In underground blasting, the pull of the initial cut is the limiting factor for the success of the rest of the round. By improving the pull of the first cut, a critical step is made towards improving the entire round. This project attempted to optimize a burn cut’s effective pull by varying the depths of the relief holes in the burn. The effect of varying the depths of the relief holes was investigated, including depths longer than that of the cut’s charged holes. The overall objective was to consistently achieve greater pull than in a standard burn, using an identical amount of explosives. Increased pull results in savings of both time and cost in underground heading advance.

"Abstract: Wolf Creek dam, on the Cumberland River in Kentucky, US, operated and maintained by the Nashville District of the USACE, is the Corps' largest reservoir east of the Mississippi river. The 1748 m (5,736 ft) long Wolf Creek dam combines earthfill and concrete gravity sections. Construction began in 1941 and was completed in 1950. The dam showed signs of instability in the 1960’s, and in the late 70’s an in-depth project of rehabilitation was undertaken, using both grouting and secant piles. The works saved the dam, but in the late 90’s further signs of distress worried the Nashville district of USACE which, after a study conducted on the water seepage, concluded that construction of a new concrete barrier cut-off wall was needed. In 2009, the $341.4 USD million contract was awarded to TREVIICOS-SOLETANCHE JV.The new wall, located upstream of the concrete monoliths, has a minimum thickness of 60 cm (24 in.), and runs the length of the embankment, into the right abutment, for about 4,200 feet. The founding depth reaches 84 m (275 feet), well below the zone of solutioning. With a total surface approaching 92,903 sq.m (1,000,000 sq.ft), the Wolf Creek barrier wall is unlike any other project in the world.The construction of the cut-off wall followed a complicated but logical sequence of several operations, involving a variety of technologies: grouting, hydromill, directional drilling, and secant piles with reverse circulation. The intensive rock grouting program was aimed to minimize the risk of slurry loss and extend the positive cut-off further deep. Subsequently, an Encasement Concrete wall was installed with hydromill, toeing into the rock, to protect the embankment during the following phases. Smart holes were then drilled into the Encasement wall down to the final depth. Eventually, the holes were used to install the secant piles by employing the reverse circulation piling method.An extensive verification campaign has confirmed the superior quality of the cutoff wall consisting of 1200 secant piles, exceeding by far USACE’s requirements. The main project was substantially completed in early 2013. A small portion of secant piles wall will be installed downstream of the dam, to close the switchyard, finishing the project in the early months of 2014.IntroductionWolf Creek Dam is located on the Cumberland River in south-central Kentucky. The Nashville District of USACE operates this multipurpose dam to provide hydropower, flood control, water supply, and water quality benefits for the Cumberland River system and surrounding region. Lake Cumberland, created by the dam, impounds 7,400 million cu.m (6 million acre foot) at its maximum pool elevation of 232 m (760 ft) above sea level. This lake is the largest reservoir east of the Mississippi and the ninth largest in the United States, and attracts 4.89 million visitors, more than Yellowstone National Park (2.87 million).This paper describes the recently completed works for the rehabilitation of the dam, accomplished by TreviICOS-Soletanche JV with the construction of a new Barrier Wall."

Mine seals can he remotely constructed in underground coal mines through vertical boreholes when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to he too dangerous. This method has great merit because the boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas, and the seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide of effective barriers to airflow or if they cannot he used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exists to sealing the entire mine to the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort. Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state of the art. This paper covers the development o f novel technology or rewrote mine seal construction, the evaluation of rite materials used, the construction practice and the Fellow-up testing.

The 1997 New Year’s Day Rogue River flood near Medford, Oregon, USA, entered historic channels, eroded a 150-foot-wide buffer, and captured an inactive gravel pond located within the channel migration zone. Channel redirection caused by pit captures threatened adjacent inactive gravel ponds. In response to this capture, a stakeholders group of concerned individuals and organizations was formed. This group ultimately developed a rehabilitation plan, which conformed to the Rogue River’s geomorphic trends. A two-dimensional model, FLO-2D, was used to evaluate channel splits, flood storage, backwater, and future conditions. Modeling results coupled with trend analysis were used to create a stable design where stream barbs, gravel redistribution, a channel outfall spillway, bendway weirs, bank reshaping, and revegetation were integrated into a single plan for a three-mile reach. The quick action by the stakeholders group averted further damage to the Rogue River system and surrounding environment. The project has preserved three miles of mainstem habitat, one mile of side channel habitat, and protected ten gravel ponds from pit capture.

"The argument has long raged across the oceans as to what the best AG/SAG mill aspect ratio is. The North American practice of a high aspect ratio of two, diameter twice length, through to the South African and Scandinavian practice of an aspect ratio of as low as a 0.5. Within the collaborative P9 AMIRA project the MPRU of the University of Cape Town and the JKMRC of the University of Queensland have been collecting plant data pertinent to this issue over the past four years.The JK SAG mill model developed by the JKMRC is based upon data collected from mills having a range of aspect ratios from 1 up to 2. The maximum mill speed, mill load, and ball filling in the fitted data base were all below the operating range common in South Afr-ica. The extension of the P9 project into South Africa therefore lent an ideal opportunity to collect data in a whole new window of operation that would allow the range of applicability of the semi-empirical SAG model to be greatly extended.At the heart of the differences in aspect ratio is the completely different operating practice for high- and low- aspect mills. The mill filling, mill speed, and recirculating loads of closed-circuit single-stage operation have more influence on the differences in operation than the pure aspect ratio relationship. Relationships for load have been extended to 45% filling, with the modified model showing the measured peak in throughput as the mill filling increases. The ball load relationship now covers fillings of over 30% balls (of total mill volume), thus including so-called SAG-ball mills. The influence of closed circuit operation has been measured. It has been found that a key issue of the high slurry flows associated with closed circuit operation, especially when closed with a cyclone, is the pulp discharge limitation of the traditional grate and radial lifter configuration. It has also been observed that absolute mill length is more of an issue than aspect ratio. Slurry flow along the mill and charge segregation within the load are being investigated on pilot and full-scale mills to provide data for potentially modifylng the perfect mixing model that is used for the SAG mill.Improved understanding of these aspects of SAG mill operation and extension of the JK SAG model to better cover the entire range is allowing serious direct comparison of high- and low aspect mills for the first time. It is the conclusion of the researchers working in this area that there is no one best practice, that in fact mills across the range have their application based on ore type, desired product, available capital and on operating costs. Developing robust designs allows direct comparison of two-stage circuits using high-aspect primary SAG mills, with single-stage closed circuit low-aspect SAG mills. The new operations within South Africa are now considering both circuit types, and data is presented on selections that cover the full range of aspect ratio and operating practice."

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of steel sheet piling including internationally manufactured hot rolled sections, their history, applications, installation and driving techniques. The discussion will cover both temporary and permanent installations; temporary piling used in construction of cofferdams with various bracing systems, deep foundation installations for buildings, bridges and tunnels, etc., and permanent piling used for highway, railroad and bridge construction as well as for riverbanks, piers, wharfs and docks, normally required for port facilities. In addition, cofferdams, as self-supporting gravity structures where interlock strength is of prime importance, will be discussed. The design and application of light, intermediate and heavy sections will be presented including heavy combined walls and information on Z-shaped, U-shaped and HZ sections and their corresponding interlocks. Emphasis is placed on new developments for design applications for deep foundations and waterfront structures within the "state of the art".

In this study, a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and following acid leaching techniques were carried out to produce boron carbide (B4C) powder. First, B2O3 was obtained through calcinations of H3BO3 at 1073 K for 2 hours. Then, the glassy B2O3 obtained was crushed and sieved. In the SHS experiments, different amounts of B2O3, Mg and C black were used. The SHS product was obtained in the form of black, spongy solid. In the leaching step, the SHS product was leached in a HCl solution to eliminate the MgO and Mg3B2O6. The effect of acid concentration on the selective leaching was studied at different concentration range, solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, and temperature. The products obtained were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and SEM techniques.

Energy and the conversion of potential energy into alternate forms is becoming a topic of household conversation for a larger segment of the world's population as mankind's desire for products derived from the vast array of technological developments continues to expand. The world's use of steel and the high energy consumption related to the production of steel promotes an awareness of the limitations of existing technology and a search for more economical alternates. Terminology such as (BF) Blast Furnace, (BOP) Basic Oxygen Furnace, (EAF) Electric ARC Furnace, (DR) Direct Reduction, (DRI) Direct Reduced Iron and (FC) form coke is becoming commonplace as alternates are being sought to alleviate the energy crunch. Coke production by various methods was developed as early as the seventeenth century in Europe to replace the disappearing hardwood forests that supplied the initial blast furnace fuel in the form of charcoal. In 1880, the Semet Solvay by-product coke oven design was introduced to the United States at Syracuse, New York, to supply coke for use in the production of soda ash, coke oven gas and its by products as the primary source of many organic processes. Although the Semet Solvay coke oven has not been marketed for decades, these coke oven batteries are in use today producing metallurgical coke, coke oven gas, and related by-products.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

The compressive strength of rock (sc) has an important effect on design of structures in rock engineering. Compressive strength can be determined in the laboratory using the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test. Some other index tests, such as the point load test, are also used, particularly when suitable samples for UCS are not available. The quantification of rock texture has introduced a new method in rock engineering for estimating the mechanical and physical properties of rock materials from microscopic investigations. The aim of this study is to quantify rock texture to estimate rock strength from the texture coefficient (TC), which is determined from a statistical assessment of thin section images. Rock texture is quantified by twelve different images from a single thin section to increase the reliability of texture analysis. A data-set is prepared to investigate correlations between TC and sc. The statistical correlations are computed after classifying of the rock samples based on their lithology as well as grain features. Equations derived based on the results of this study are used to predict the approximate value of compressive strength from the texture coefficient. This method is particularly useful for preliminary studies in rock engineering projects prior to detailed site investigation.

For improvement of urban traffic infrastructure, the City of Amsterdam is cur­rently constructing the 9.5 km long North-South Metro line passing through the central districts of Amsterdam. Focal section of the project is the Central Station linking the NS Line with the Central Railway Station, the East Metro line, new bus and tramway terminals, ferries and individual traffic. Construction works required for the project are of high complexity and technical standards. They are executed under severe restrictions concerning programming, space, logistics, and impact on the integrity of existing buildings and structures as all existing installations and facilities have to maintain fully operational during the construction period. The paper deals with the main geotechnical features of the project and in particular with the diaphragm wall and bored pile construction at the Voor-plein and the De Ruijterkade sections of the Central Station.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. It is proposed in this paper to deal with these three aspects of the recent developments in rock-drilling.*Re-written from a lecturette given during the First Ordinary Meeting, 1936.

It was investigated in which form sulphur is bonded in ladle slags. For this purpose, the mineralogical phases of the ladle slags were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by means of a microprobe. This slag characterization allowed reconstructing the bonding of sulphur into the phases of the ladle slag. Moreover, the reaction process with regard to the ionic theory as well as the structural formula for the mechanism of sulphur bonding were discussed. The bonding of sulphur into calcium aluminate slags is determined by the sulphide ion content in the slag as well as by the ratio of (CaO)/(Al2O3). Calcium sulphide separates only if the slag contains a large number of sulphide ions. When Ca12Al14O33is separated, the sulphide ion is successively integrated into the lattice. The crystal lattice of Ca12Al14O33is characterized by an open, three-dimensional anionic network composed of aluminium-oxygen tetrahedrons linking the edges. In this network, large interstitial spaces are formed, which may be filled with calcium ions on the one hand and statistically with a free oxygen or sulphide ion on the other hand.
