The following data are put together to assist those who are responsible for ordering stores for mines and works. When making out a list of mine stores for a new plant, one can hardly be expected to remember everything, still it is all the more important that articles should not be forgotten, should the mine be situated in an out of the way place, where the manager has to look several weeks ahead. A man who has been accustomed to buy stores on a small scale, from local merchants, where he could pick out personally what he wanted, may suddenly find himself in a place where he has to order wholesale quantities or make out store lists to send contractors for quotations. As it is of course cheaper to purchase stores by the hundredweight, coil, barrel, etc as the case may be, in which they are made up, than to break such a parcel, the way in which the materials are placed on the market is mentioned, so that those who don't know may take full advantage of wholesale terms. The most frequent sizes and brands employed in connection with Australian mining are also mentioned. It would be useless to enumerate all sizes made by the trade, as many would be of no value for our purpose; still I have put down what will serve as a reminder to the manager to mention what size he requires when giving an order, such as the diameter of dynamite cartridges a slight neglect of this sort has often caused serious delay. By mentioning certain brands I do not wish to recommend them in preference to others inadvertently omitted they are simply mentioned as some of those frequently met with.

Processing of phosphate ore sample was investigated for increasing phosphate content and reduction of its gangue minerals such as carbonates and silicates. Experimental designs were per-formed using Taguchi method. Different flotation methods were investigated for Moundon phosphate ore sample and three methods were used as follow: direct cellophane flotation, reverse calcite flotation and reverse quartz flotation. Because of the sensitivity of cellophane flotation to slime content, prior desliming was carried out before the experiments. Direct flotation experiments carried out and a concentrate contained 23.80% P2O5, 6.88% SiO2 and 72.33% recovery were produced. The achieved P2O5 content in the produced concentrate from reverse flotation of calcite was 26.44% and the recovery was 82.56%. The concentrate products obtained at optimum conditions by direct flotation of phosphate and indirect flotation of calcite were subjected to indirect flotation of calcite and direct flotation of appetite and final concentrates with P2O5 grade of the order of 24.19% and 26.96% were obtained, respectively. It was concluded that one stage direct flotation is unavoidable to achieve a product with low SiO2 content.

Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Attention to even the smallest of details cannot be allowed to slip. This is a record Simplot Phosphates said it hopes to improve on every day.

We had a cold, gray winter here in Kansas City and I spent a lot of time watching out my den window at the squirrels and birds trying to get by in the lousy weather. I remember too well working in the cold, loading shots. I was frostbitten several times since I couldn’t tie in MS connectors with gloves on. Those old connectors had a piece of detonating cord on either end of a metal tube that held the delay and you tied them to the trunk lines with square knots. Doing this on a “warm” day in Alaska or Montana shooting ditch for a pipeline could be a frosty experience. Also remember how hard it was to connect up electric caps (detonators to you new guys) in the cold. Now I don’t want you to feel sorry for me ‘cause I suspect most of you younger fellows have also paid your dues in the cold and for that matter in the heat too. Wowee, the heat at the bottom of a Chicago dolomite quarry in August was enough to fry the brains of all that were there. Maybe that’s why the third deck of my brains doesn’t exist.

Stope back conditions in the cut-and-fill stopes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited often deteriorate to such an extent that, because conventional rockbolts are not able to maintain safe working conditions, square-set timber is installed. An attempt to eliminate this costly procedure has involved the use of long grouted rockbolts using high tensile prestressing wire. These bolts were developed in conjunction with the prestressing engineers of BBR (Aust.). This form of support has improved the back conditions, maintained safe working conditions, and delayed the introduction of timber in a number of stopes.Production from these stopes has been maintained at its previous level (at a rate approximately double that of a comparable timber stope).

"AbstractWith the increasing demand in reuse of inner city areas and the urgent need for deeper foundation pits under cramped circumstances, adjacent structures close to and high ground water level, the well-known established technologies especially with small to mid-sized dimensions are often too time consuming and occasionally not economic to install lateral support systems. The alternatives for these specific cases could be the usage of the deep mixing technology to create lateral support systems in reinforcing the deep mixing elements additionally to transfer the horizontal loads from earth – and water-pressure.With increasing demand in depth and water tightness, verticality and overlapping of single column solutions are becoming the key in execution. In addition, for some applications subsoil-conditions were not ideal for wet deep mixing technologies. The tubular soil mixing system (TSM) as a combination of mechanical mixing and support of hydraulic cutting by jet grouting can provide solutions toovercome these challenges.1. Current market conditions and trendsThe present financial crisis and the efforts not only to consolidate national budgets, but also to rescue certain banks, have not left the building industry unaffected either. Some drastic cutbacks to public budgets, along with the increasingly restrictive granting of credit for the financing of construction projects, have led to enormous over-capacities in the building sector, with purely negative impact. James C. M. Li (United States Steel Covp.)—The author has discovered a single analytical relation between the minimum, or the steady-state, creep rate and the applied stress confirming a statement made earlier by orn" that such relation should exist and should reduce to the power law at low-stress levels and to the exponential law at high-stress levels. However, as pointed out by the author, all the available theories of creep are not adequate to explain such a single relation. Inspired by such a statement, I have made a suggestion concerning a possible explanation13 of the new relation. This is based on the concept that the rate-controlling step is the cooperative motion of a short dislocation segment. The nature of and the reason for the cooperation have been discussed13 as well as the reason why the motion of the dislocation could be controlled by the mobility of the short segments. A natural short segment has been proposed13 to be the node formed at the intersection of two dislocations. The reason why the node may contain only a few atoms has not been discussed and the application of the proposed model to all the metals and alloys reported in this paper has not been attempted. It seems appropriate to include these in this discussion. The model was partly inspired by the substructure recently observed in the electron microscope on creep specimens. One such example is shown in Fig. 48 in Darken's Campbell Memorial Lecture. The substructure is a collection of dislocation intersections and irregular networks. No pileups have ever been observed in such specimens. A closer look at the network indicates that one set of dislocations is more straight than the other set sug- gesting that the other set may be mobile in the plane of the net. Since, for the network to survive the creep deformation, some dislocation reaction has to take place at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations, the mobile dislocation, even if it can slip in the plane of the net, will have difficulty in moving at these intersections. To illustrate, an idealized network is shown in Fig. 9. The thin lines represent the set of dislocations which are mobile and can slip in the plane of the net except at the nodes which are formed at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations. The other set of dislocations, represented by the thick lines, may have a Burgers vector which is not parallel to the plane of the net, and therefore may be immobile. Because of this nonparallel Burgers vector, the Burgers vector of the node, which is avectorial sum of the Burgers vectors of the two sets of dislocations, will also be nonparallel to the plane of the net. Therefore, the node cannot slip in the plane of the net and the set of mobile dislocations will have to drag the node along as indicated in Fig. 9. Now the problem is how many atoms could be involved in the nodes. Exact calculation of the length of the node is a difficult task especially since the length should be a steady-state length and not an equilibrium length. An estimate of the equilibrium length can be made by balancing the line tension of all the dislocations. The results would be a small fraction of the length 1 between nodes as shown in Fig. 10. In some instances such a calculation shows that the node will not be formed. But, since the calculation is only approximate, it does not rule out the possibility of the formation of a short node. "The South Bay Division of Selco Mining is located fifty-four miles northeast of Ear Falls Ontario on Confederation Lake. The concentrator operates five days a week and processes six hundred tons per day of copper zinc silver sulphide ore. The concentrator is comprised of crushing, grinding, differential flotation, thickening and drying circuits. The major constituents of the concentrator feed are: chalcopyrite 7%, sphalerite 20%, pyrrhotite 3%, pyrite 25 - 30% and felsitic volcanics 40 - 50%. The mine went into production in March 1971 with an anticipated three year life and is now scheduled for closure in the summer of 1981. Recent mine production has been limited to three cut and fill stopes which have widely varying ore grades, therefore mill feeds vary from 0.25 to 4% copper, 3.5 to 27% zinc, 0 to 0.4% lead and 15 to 30% iron.In mid 1977 Selco negotiated a six month rental purchase agreement with Outokumpu Instruments Canada Limited for a five stream analyser system. The Minexan 202 probes were the first Outokumpu probe type analysers installed in Canada although Outokumpus' Courier systems are well known. Installation of the system took place in April 1978 and after numerous hardware faults the six month evaluation began in August. By December it was obvious that the Minexan 202 probes with proportional detectors did not have adequate resolution to determine low copper values in either of the tailings streams. Outokumpu offered to replace the tailings analysers with a new prototype solid state detector probe the following summer. The evaluation on the five Minexan 202 probes continued until August 1979 when the new solid probe was installed. The Minexan S (solid state) probe was evaluated with the three remaining Minexan 202 probes until December 1979 when Selco elected to purchase the system."

Background The resources of the Gippsland Basin include not only the coal and oil for which it is well known, but also the tourism resource and the quality of life which it offers its residents and visitors. To manage this group of resources requires an understanding and ability to predict the consequences of possible developments. The water of the streams and estuaries as a key component as it is both a resource and the means for transporting wastes from one area to another. To aid in the resource planning process there is a need for models of the estuarine hydraulic processes. This paper describes an appropriate modelling technique. Resource use conflicts may arise from developments in the catchment upstream of the estuarine reach. For example the diversion of water for domestic and industrial use will change the velocity and salinity structure of the downstream estuary. In turn these changes will affect sediment distribution and deposition patterns and may impose stress on the biological communities and ultimately on the fisheries resources and water quality. The manager of an estuarine system may have expertise in ecology, hydraulics or another of the specialist disciplines involved, but commonly will not. The manager will identify needs for resource and development and the broad options required to satisfy them. The manager will use these studies as the basis for his/her selection of the option for execution. Thus a model for'use by the manager of an estuarine system must have the following properties: (i) The model must be sufficiently accurate to throw up all the likely options. (ii) The model must be capable of being run by the manager, interactively, to answer `what if' questions. This requirement implies a simple code andhardware limited to a personal computer or possibly a desk top work station. (iii) The model must be robust so that unrealistic input oes not generate apparently useful output, and no output is generated for cases where the model is not designed to give results. (iv) The model must be capable of being used as part of a modelling system comprising models of all the geographic and demographic components

This paper describes a newly developed Surface Remote Blasting System (SURBS) for electronic detonators, which is currently being introduced into surface blasting applications. The rationale for developing the SURBS was to meet key needs of mine operations, such as minimizing the shutdown time and the capability to conveniently initiate blasts in difficult terrain from a safe distance. Increased distance from the blast site, combined with a good overview of the site enables maximum safety during blasting. The system also removes the inconvenience of running long firing cables. The SURBS consists of the field-proven detonator and equipment technology of an existing electronic detonator system, a Surface Remote Blasting Box and a Surface Remote Blaster. The Surface Remote Blaster is the Master unit and controls the Remote Blasting Box via encrypted radio communication using a sophisticated safety technology, which guarantees that the highest safety standards are maintained.

Frothers are surfactants used in floatation to aid generation of small bubbles. Studying events at the moment of bubble creation is a challenge because of the short time frame. This presentation introduces a novel acoustic approach. The technique has the resolution capable of detecting events that occur within 1-2 ms. The transition from coalescence to non-coalescence is tracked as a function of surfactant concentration and gas rate through the capillary. Results are given for some common flotation frothers and n-alcohols (C4-C8). A stress model is used to give a qualitative explanation to the observed action of frothers on coalescence prevention. Results for salt (sodium chloride) are included for comparison).

The era of Hatch in Africa has seen the doubling of furnace power in retrofit projects using existing crucibles to developing the highest intensity immersed electrode operations in the world. This has resulted in minimized OPEX and CAPEX per unit of production. Through the continued development of its cooling, binding and furnace power supply technologies and working with the experienced and knowledgeable personnel at the smelting facilities in Africa, Hatch has managed to meet the challenges of ever increasing furnace process requirements associated with increased power density and superheats prevalent in the operations. In addition to developing furnace crucible designs, Hatch has also intensified its ?after sales service and support? with the construction, commissioning and start-up technical assistance and operational readiness and operational support for ramp-up to nameplate capacity and beyond. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

"In the Bayer process, flocculants are introduced in the feed well to enhance the aggregation of red mud particles. To gain a better understanding of the flocculation process taking place in the feed well, shearinduced flocculation was achieved using concentric rotating cylinders (Couette system). Our previous work has shown the effect of the shear rate on the aggregate’s settling rate and on residual turbidity of the Bayer liquor. In this study, the data demonstrated that the aggregates at selected shear levels appear as a population with a widespread size distribution. By using an imagery apparatus, it was possible to measure the size, the shape, and the sedimentation velocity of the larger red mud aggregates. Marked differences were noticed in the characteristics of the aggregate populations obtained under various shear conditions. IntroductionIn the Bayer process, red mud particles are separated from the liquor in primary clarifiers and washing circuits under the action of synthetic polymers. The agitation in the feed pipe and in the feed well affects the flocculation since the aggregates are formed by the interaction between the red mud particles and the polymers. A minimum shear rate is needed to initiate the aggregation process of fine particles (Warren, 1975).Different systems have been used to study the effects of shear on the flocculation process (Tampo and Watanabe, 1979; Klimpel and Hogg, 1986; Scott et al., 1996; Biggs and Lant, 2000). The Couette flow system has been used in some studies on shear-flocculation (Oles, 1992; Farrow and Swift, 1996a, 1996b). The importance of the physical properties of the aggregates in determining the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process within a given gravity thickener has been demonstrated (Farrow and Warren, 1989a)"

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close.
