Most analysts determining tungsten trioxide in low grade samples are aware that colorimetric procedures do not possess the inherent disadvantages of gravimetric methods operating on milligram quantities of tungsten trioxide. Apart from the inaccuracies associated with weighing four or five milligrams of ignited oxide in a platinum crucible of about 30 gm. weight with a large surface area to absorb moisture, using a 5 gm. charge on samples less than about 0·15 per cent tungsten trioxide, it is extremely difficult toget complete or pure precipitation of tungsten with cinchonine, cinchonine plus alpha benzoin oxime, rhodamine B or any other of the commonly used precipitants. Table 2', No. 8, illustrates the low results obtained by gravimetric as opposed to colorimetric procedures. In addition the colorimetric determination requires only a small portion of the time consumed by gravimetric practices and the increased accuracy obtainable in low ranges together with the saving in time made it highly desirable to develop a colorimetric method suitable for King Island ores.The most commonly used colorimetric method is that introduced by Feigl and Krumholz (1932), since modified by various investigators (Grimaldi and North, 1943; Sandell, 1946; Westwood and Mayer, 1947; Gentry and Sherrington, 1948; Freund, Wright and Brookshier, 1951; Grouthamel and Johnson, 1954; and others). Mining explosions designed to move, bulk or fracture rock are often composed of a number of explosions arranged in a complex spatial and temporal pattern. The effects of the explosions are strongly dependent upon the design and implementation of this blasting pattern. This paper describes the collection, combination and visual display of multiple types of data from these explosions for the purposes of understanding the relationships between the blast design, implementation, and observations. Data sets consist of three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three-dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions studied include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture rocks and those that cast material.

This bulletin traces the development of high-pressure, coal and tar hydrogenation technology, based on an intensive review of the pertinent literature. The bulletin was written as a part of the Bureau of Mines research program on synthetic liquid fuels. It covers the history and economics of the process; the chemical aspect of hydrogenation of coal, tar, and middle oil; the engineering aspect of converting coal and tar to liquid fuels, principally gasoline; and the equipment for the process. The literature covered includes documents of the United States and British Governments, journals, and other publications. Bureau results in the hydrogenation field are also incorporated.

The Soilex Pile combines a slender shaft, for quick and easy installation, with an enlarged pile toe, for high capacity. The key component is the Expander Body, which is inflated by injecting cement grout when in position. The latest development in the Soilex Pile System results in a reduction of the total cost of Soilex Piles, in many cases values that are competitive with pre­cast concrete piles and displacement piles. Soilex Piles can now be installed on top of a bearing soil layer, instead of 3 to 4 m into that soil as previously required, further minimising the ground disturbance. Soilex Piles achieve high capacity in relatively loose soils, with ultimate loads typically between 1000 and 2000 kN in a sand with CPT qc = 5 to 10 MPa or SPT N= 10 to 20. It is possible to pre-load and proof-load all piles with dynamic testing up to 2000 kN or using built-in jacks, thereby verifying the capacity. The vibratory installation method, which is extremely quick and causes very little soil disturbance and noise, is exemplified by two case histories.

In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

This paper presents a novel methodology for the hydraulic design of mine backfill distribution systems. The ?operating range? method uses the concepts of the hydraulic grade line and equivalent pipe length to determine flows and pressures as the pipeline route and static head change over the life of the mine. The operating range method is easy to learn because it is semi-graphical and uses well-known design concepts (e.g., the hydraulic grade line) and slurry design models (e.g., the Durand deposition velocity model). However, by changing the paradigm in which these concepts are used, the operating method allows all potential pipeline cases to be analysed simultaneously without the need to know the exact pipe routing. It also allows the hydraulics engineer to quickly identify ?pinch points? and ?slack flow? zones, to estimate the effect of changing the size or length of any given section of pipe, to assess the impact of changing the material properties of the backfill slurry, to size the slurry pumps, and to size and locate rupture discs when required.

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. Fig. 2 shows average values of selected parameters at the start and end of each of the three rougher flotation stages.DISCUSSIONpH and redox potentiaIsFig. 1 shows that pH and Eh were relatively constant at the start of sulphide lead flotation. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

Geographic information system (GIS) is one of the most accurate and useful tools to help decision – making for decision-makers. As to expert systems, it provides solutions to the problems faced by mimicking reasoning of the human experts. Blasting operations in mining include high risks for the vicinity of the operations. GIS having required mechanisms to take right decisions for the people who have to make right and precise decisions, while it is utilized as a integrated system with expert reasoning, is thought to be considered important tool that provides to take decisions with ease, and also to reduce the risks in the blasting operations. It is possible to find out both of the economic and optimum solutions to solve the various encountered problems in the mining activities such as blasting operations, only when GIS integrated expert systems is used. Managing the spatial data unified with expert reasoning is the one of the greatest advantages of the system. In the scope of the study, various scientific studies were investigated. The benefits of the system were figured out and the phases of a unified system were proposed in the blasting operations.

Of the world's total production of gold the largest proportion comes from the more regularly consistent ore bodies, but in the aggregate an important part comes from those which are often irregular, uncertain and small. These smaller ore bodies are often high in grade and, as the capital required to work them is not large, they appeal to people seeking a quick and profitable return for a small outlay.These small mining concerns cannot afford detailed geological and petrological investigations and mapping, so they are very often dependent on local knowledge and experience which admittedly may be of really great value.Nevertheless the absence of skilled guidance may not only cause good opportunities for intelligent exploration to be lost, but discourage the seach for other ore bodies.lVIining engineers in the course of their travels in the examination of mines often come across such cases and also others where problems of finding lost ore bodies have been solved by the man on the spot. As records of cases are valuable and useful additions to the knowledge of ore occurrences, the writer now proposes to describe one such case coming under his observation in recent years.It is that of a small mine, known as the Idaho, at the southern end of the famous "Golden Mile" at Kalgoorlie (see Fig. 1). This mine has been a small and very erratic producer ever since it was abandoned by an English company which owned it forty years ago. "Graphite has unique properties such as high thermal resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and good thermal and electrical conductivity, and is often utilized as coating materials for electrical conductors, TV Brown tubes, electromagnetic shields, and so on. Additionally, its excellent lubrication property is widely used in oil and solid lubricants. Finely ground graphite particles in the sub-micron range are commonly used for these applications.Sub-micron fine graphite particles are typically prepared in liquids by vibration ball mills. However, it is known that the wet process takes long periods of grinding time like 24 hours or more and requires a series of subsequent highenergy operations such as de-watering, drying, regrinding and classification. On the other hand, there would be numerous advantages if fine grinding could be done effectively in dry atmosphere. However, since crystalline graphite has a layered structure giving a high lubrication property, its dry grinding, especially when obtaining sub-micron size particles, is extremely difficult. The shape of the graphite particles is also important for its utilization since particles with flaky shape can maintain relatively high electrical and thermal conductance as well as lubrication ability. Therefore, it would be necessary to reduce the size of graphite particles into fines with flaky shape while grinding proceeds. Dry grinding characteristics of natural graphite under various atmospheric conditions with gases using different mills were studied, and fine flaky particles by grinding the graphite intercalation compounds and the exfoliated graphite were produced. However, there were no sufficient investigations on the size reduction of natural graphite at low atmospheric pressures in attritional milling conditions. The main purpose of this paper is to provide sub-micron fine grinding characteristics of natural crystalline graphite at various degrees of low atmospheric pressure, and to discuss the size reducing models in an attrition mill"

Control of respirable dust produced by auger type continuous mining machines is normally attempted by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine. In tests conducted under this contract, a 'wet auger' system was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating auger itself. The tests were conducted at the Hunter mine of Smith and Stover Coal Company using a Jeffrey 1.00L auger miner. Operating the mining machine in the wet auger mode, it was found to produce 47 pct less respirable dust than when the fixed conventional sprays were used. On section dust levels were reduced too 3.5 mg/m3 which is equivalent to approximately 2.0 mg/m3 for a full shift portal to portal sample. The major difficulty that had to be overcome was the development of a simple reliable water transfer mechanism to get the water into the rotating augers. This was successfully achieved by the development of a water-through-the-shaft water system. This system can be retrofitted to existing machines and is available in kit form.

In arranging the references the same general scheme has been followed, but as in those bulletins, several changes and additions have been made in the classifica.tion, the more important being in the classes " Development and production " and "Refining and refineries." German periodicals for 1917 were not procurable and references to articles in those and in other foreign journals that were not available have been credited to the sources from which they were procured.

Neste trabalho foram usinados CDPs da liga com composição de 50,9 % at de Ni e, em seguida, as amostras foram envelhecidas em temperaturas entre 350-550 ºC, tensões aplicadas de 60 MPa e tempos de 45 e 180 minutos. Além disso, foram realizados também envelhecimento sem aplicação de carga nas mesmas condições de temperatura e tempos para comparação das propriedades, porém acrescentando uma amostra solubilizada a 850ºC durante 1 hora. Posteriormente as amostras foram caracterizadas por DSC para determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fases. Observa-se neste trabalho que o DSC de algumas amostras apresentou tanto no aquecimento quanto no resfriamento dois picos de transformação que pode estar relacionado ao aparecimento da fase R. Além disso, pode ter ocorrido a formação da fase Ni3Ti4, pois ligas com teores acima de 50,6 %at. de Ni são caracterizados pela formação de precipitados ricos em Ni, que pode acarreta na diminuição da concentração de Ni na matriz e aumento da temperatura de transformação. Este trabalho é importante, pois há poucos estudos relacionados com o efeito do envelhecimento sob carga nas propriedades de efeito de memória de forma e superelasticidade da liga NiTi.

The inherently explosion-proof mine (EPM) concept is based upon the non-flammability of certain combustible-oxidant-inert gas mixtures, and the effect of partial pressure of gases on physiological reactions. In a properly controlled underground environment, gas explosions are impossible, men can do work, and relatively high concentrations of methane would be permitted. A systems analysis has been performed to examine the physiological, engineering, and economic feasibility of such a concept, and methods and equipment are recommended for maintaining an EPM atmosphere in a bituminous coal mine producing a nominal two million tons of clean coal per year. It is concluded that: engineering feasibility can be demonstrated using subsystems and components that can be designed and built within the present state-of-the-art, that economic feasibility is possible within approximately five years, and that physiological feasibility is sufficiently promising to warrant continued investigation.
