"Flotation selectivity becomes progressively more difficult to achieve with decreasing particle size. One of the possible problems is agglomeration, i.e. particles clustering together. One mechanism derives from the surface charge all particles develop in water. Agglomeration driven by surface charge is known as coagulation. One form is coagulation between particles of two different minerals of opposite charge. Another is coagulation between particles of the same mineral when conditions are such that the charge approaches zero.The paper describes the method of measuring charge and a new automated settling technique for measuring agglomeration. The phenomena are illustrated with galena and pyrite. Methods of assessing the importance of agglomeration in the plant environment are still to be developed.IntroductionFine particles can agglomerate (i.e. adhere to each other) under certain conditions. This is counter-productive for any physical separation process, including flotation. One cause of agglomeration derives from the surface charge that all particles develop in water. Agglomeration due to surface charge effects is referred to as coagulation. There are two forms of coagulation. If the surface charge is brought to near zero then the force of repulsion is lost and particles coagulate. This usually applies to particles of one mineral type and the technical tenn is homocoagulation. On the other hand, if two particles have opposite charge there is an attractive force. Since the particles in this case are usually different minerals this is known as heterocoagulation.Both types of coagulation can cause minerals to be misplaced. In the case of heterocoagulation this is fairly obvious. One example that may be familiar is slime coating (fines of one mineral coating larger particles of another) But even homocoagulation can be a problem an agglomerate of the same mineral particles can entrap particles of another mineral."

THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

[The purpose of the study is to investigate cases of subsidence over abandoned mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh Coal identified from published and unpublished sources and to determine through a consideration of the geology, topography, climate, mining activity, and evidence at ground surface, what mechanisms control subsidence .and under what circumstances it takes place. The study wan performed it two phases, the first to identify all documented incidents of subsidence in mined-out areas of the Pittsburgh coal Region; and the second, to study a particular portion of the region in detail, collecting pertinent data relative to the sites within, characterizing roil the nature of the subsidence and its economic consequences, and determining the applicability of the findings to other areas whore similar problems with the collapse of abandoned miner have been encountered.]

The effects of hydrogen chloride (HCI) concentration and temperature on the solubility and hydration state of the alkali chlorides LiCI, NaCI, and KCI and the alkaline-earth chlorides, MgCI2, and CaCl2 were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Saturated aqueous solutions of the chlorides were sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increased HCI concentration caused decreased salt solubility be-cause of the common ion effect. Aqueous solubilities for the chlorides of Ca, Li, Mg, K, and Na ranged from 42.6, 45.2, 35.2, 25.5, and 26.1 pct, respectively, at 20° C to 56.9, 49.4, 37.6, 31.0, and 27.0 pct, re-spectively, at 60° C. In solutions sparged to HCI saturation, solubili-ties for these chlorides ranged from 22.4, 26.5, 3.0, 1.3, and 0.05 pct, respectively, at 20° C to 53.2, 48.8, 28.3, 2.6, and 0.8 pct, respec-tively, at 60° C. The solubilities of LiCI and CaCl2 in HCI solution were high because HCI solubility is low in these solutions. The chlo-ride salts of Ca, Li, and Mg formed hydrates, which depended on tempera-ture and HCI concentration. Monohydrates for LiCI, tetrahydrates and hexahydrates for MgCI2, and dihydrates, tetrahydrates, and hexahydrates for CaCl2 were obtained.

"INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

As the University of Hong Kong and their advisors planned their new Centennial Campus it became clear that they would have to re-provide existing water reservoirs on an adjacent site with new salt water reservoirs located underground in two new caverns. The existing reservoirs are owned by the Water Supplies Department who provide salt water for sanitary flushing and a separate potable water supply for regular use. Although underground reservoirs had not previously been adopted locally, the planning has been completed to a tight schedule and the construction is well advanced. The need to preserve historic buildings imposed constraints, as did the requirement to minimise potential construction nuisance for the local community and environment. This paper presents the background to the project and the work carried out to develop an innovative, sustainable and environmental acceptable solution. Construction progress to date is also presented.

"In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilizes conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX®1001 ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a 3 stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJ’s and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plants’ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.INTRODUCTIONGekko Systems (Gekko) is a leader in the development of innovative technology for gravity recovery and intensive cyanidation. It provides low cost and metallurgically optimal solutions for its customers. It has also led the trend away from whole ore cyanidation (CIP/CIL) towards gravity/intensive cyanidation (GIL) and gravity/flotation/intensive cyanidation (GFIL) plants. These types of plants offer low capital costs, low environmental impact and maximum return to investors (Rob J Longley et al, 2002). Key to this type of flowsheet is the application of a continuous concentrate unit, such as the InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ), which is designed to produce high gold gravity recoveries at a coarse grind (Sandy Gray, 2003). When combined with other gravity devices, and/or flotation, and intensive cyanidation, using the Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR), very high overall recoveries can be achieved.In 2004, Gekko launched a new range of products called Gekko Modular Systems. The idea was to provide off the shelf, complete solutions for the separation and recovery of complex and free gold as well as the pre-concentration of diamonds. A series of modules were designed that incorporated Gekko manufactured as well as outsourced equipment. Gekko now offers modules ranging from feeding and conveying to crushing, gravity recovery, flotation, intensive cyanidation, refining and detox (see Figure 1)."

The rocks of Waihi and the surrounding district are almost entirely rhyolitic and ande5itic in character. Sedimentary rocks, with the exception of some surface deposits of clay loosely compacted conglomerate, etc., and one or two thin and broken beds of a very poor lignite, occasionally changed by igneous agencies into a bituminous coal, are almost absent. In the shafts sunk by the Waihi and Grand Junction companies outside the outcropping andesitic area of the Martha Hill, more than one old surface or lake bottom has been passed through. At these points layers of sand, consolidated volcanic mud and tuff, accompanied by numerous broken fragments of imperfectly silicified wood have been enccuntered, but these occurrences may, for the purpose of this paper, be neglected.The youngest rock of the district are rhyolites, probably of Pliocene age. At least three distinct classes of rhyolitic lava, each possessing features of unusual interest, may be made out. None of these, however, is gold-bearing. The youngest flow, a light-coloured, fine-grained rock, is remarkable owing to its enclosing at times fragments of carbonised wood, varying in size from mere specks up to quite large pieces of almost pure charcoal. Rhyolitic tuff is also met with. TULSA SECTION At the smoker concluding the two day meeting of the Tulsa section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 26, 1919, Dr. Willis T. Lee, the new head of the Geological Department of the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to the assembled geologists and mining engineers. Dr. Lee requested that the geologists and engineers who were making a specialty of petroleum geology assist him in giving a good course in practical oil geology in the Geological Department of the University. After a motion offering the services of all present in giving lectures on their special subjects had been adopted, Dr. Perrine of Hutchinson, Kans., named the geologists who were pledged to give lectures in Dr. Lee's course. The students in geology at Norman are assured of the latest information regarding practical work in petroleum geology and will have the inspiration derived from contact with men who are actually at work upon the problems which they are studying. Dr. Lee and President Brooks of the University are to be congratulated upon the introduction of this .method of instruction. The plan thus put into operation is similar to the graduate system of coaching in athletics followed at many of the large universities; what is good for instruction in athletics should also prove good for instruction in applied geology.

A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.

"INTRODUCTION The Queen Mary copper property is in sec. 18, T. 12 N., R. 16 W., in the Clinton mining district of Missoula County, Mont. It was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, November 21, 1943. Upon the basis of his recommendations, a small trenching and diamond-drilling program was begun November 11, 1944. One diamond-drill hole was completed December 16, -944, but because of frozen ground trenching was postponed until June 1945 and then completed. This report describes the results of exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

"Louvicourt Mine's concentrator, located near Val d'Or, Quebec, treats an average of 4,300 tonnes of ore per day composed mainly of copper, zinc, gold and silver. An analysis of concentrator revenues and metallurgical losses shows a potential for additional gain, particularly in regards to precious metals (kustelite) where recovery is usually around 67 -70 %. The planning, installation and trial operational period of two Outokumpu SK-240 flash cells at the underflow of the primary cyclones took two years. The use of (( flash flotation )) technology has made it possible to exploit the favourable conditions at the underflow of the primary cyclones such as precious metal concentration and the presence of liberated coarse chalcopyrite. These conditions permit early flotation (fresh surfaces) of the kustelite and the liberated copper. Since the start-up of the flash cells, the metallurgical gains have turned out to be very positive with increases in metal recovery reflected in appreciable NSR gains. Also, significant savings in reagent consumption and a coarser copper concentrate have made it possible to reduce the drying cycle of the Larox filter presses since the cells were put into operation.BACKGROUNDLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. (30% ownership) on behalf of its partners Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corp. (25%). The mine is located in northwestern Quebec about 600 km north of Montreal and about 25 km east of the mining town of Val d'Or. The mine commenced commercial production in July 1994.The massive sulphide ore deposit lies at depths varying between 450 m and 900 m. Mining reserves (2% Cu equi. cut-off) as of Jan. Is', 2000 are estimated at 7.5 million tonnes of ore averaging 3.4% Cu, 1.8% Zn, 28.0 g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au. Delineated ore reserves permit the use of a mechanized transverse blasthole mining method. The extraction order is a typical 1.3.5 mining sequence. Primary and secondary stopes are 15 m wide, 15 to 70 m long (25 m long average) and 30 m high. Backfilling for pillar recovery and regional stability is required."

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. "The Collahuasi copper mine, located at an altitude of 4300 meters above sea level in northern Chile, commenced operations late in 1998. The mine is currently the 4‘h largest copper producer in the world and comprises an open pit, a 60,000 tpd sulphide concentrator, a 15,000 tpd oxide heap leach and SWEW plant and a 200 km concentrate pipeline to a port facility.Constructing, commissioning and operating a mine at high altitude presents unique challenges in terms of the performance of both equipment and people. It is important that these be recognized and carefully considered during the feasibility study and the detailed design stages and the success of the Collahuasi project is largely due to this. The plant design incorporates a number of features aimed at mitigating the problems of altitude and the construction methodology also took into account the particular site conditions.This paper discusses the Collahuasi project team’s approach to planning for the remote location and also some of the problems experienced during construction, commissioning and operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Collahuasi mine is located in northern Chile, some 250 km to the south-east of the port of Iquique and 15 km from the Bolivian border. The mine facilities lie between 3800-4300 m above sea level on the Altiplano, the central plateau of the Andes mountains, and cover a total of approximately 95,000 hectares. Although the area is arid, it experiences an average of 150 mm of precipitation annually and weather conditions can be extreme. Temperatures during the day range between -3 to +11 º C and are generally below 0ºC at night, sometimes as low as -20°C. High energy winds are common and humidity is low. Much of the precipitation occurs during the winter as snow but there also occurs a period during the Chilean summer known as the “Invierno Boliviano’’ (or Bolivian Winter) which is characterized by severe electrical storms and rain."

Before 1950, hot working was simply deforming above the recrystallization point and gave a soft product compared to cold working. From 1960 onwards, improved testing in compression and torsion (stress, strain rate, temperature, quenching) provided valid specimens for microstructural analysis by polarized optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Indeed, TEM was essential to uncovering the hot working mechanisms because it could distinguish between cold and hot substructures (dynamic recovery) in either initial or new grains (dynamic recrystallization). Over the years, teams at Concordia, McGill and UBC obtained NSERC support for students and equipment. CANMET built up a hot forming group having capabilities from high-rate cam-plastometer compression to rolling of experimental alloy billets; this was combined with latest metallographic instruments for fundamental research. Al alloys of every class (2000, 3000, 5000, 7000, 8000) were studied to understand the effects of solutes, precipitates, dispersoids and composites. The complex flow patterns in extrusion were clarified and modeled by finite element methods. Physical simulations of rolling schedules (up to 20 passes and reductions of 98%) by torsion provided evidence of microstructure development during both the passes and the softening intervals, thus clarifying development of texture in different alloys.
