Mining Lease SML 57 was registered to Mount Kasi on 5 January, 1995. The Mount Kasi gold mine is located in Vanua Levu, Fiji's second largest island and operated from 1932 to 1946 producing 261,000t of ore at an average grade of 7.5g/t Au. The deposit represents a structurally controlled style of high sulphidation copper gold mineralisation with peripheral low sulphidation mesothermal vein type gold mineralisation. The resource consists of 1,048,000 tonnes of residual soils (eluvium) containing 1.9 g/t Au at 0.5 g/t Au cut off and 1,240,000 tonnes of hard rock at 3.0 g/t Au and 1.0 g/t Au cut. 94 drill holes, 298 auger holes and 85 pits were modelled to outline the resource. 29% of the pits bottomed in mineralisation and it is likely the full thickness of eluvium has been understated. The pit is scheduled to produce 500,000 tonnes of ore per annum to yield 35,000 ounces of gold with an initial 2 years of eluvial ore followed by a further 2 years of hard rock ore. Total capital costs are estimated to be less than 10.0 million dollars with construction planned to commence in 1995. The likelihood of locating further ore is high.

The Mariana arc is an ~1,400-km-long intraoceanic arc that marks the southern extension of the Izu-Bonin arc, and is host to 62 ?volcanic centers? of which at least 27 (21 submarine) are hydrothermally, or volcanically active. A surface ship cruise in early 2003 mapped the distribution of hydrothermal plumes emanating from these centers, followed by remotely operated vehicle (ROV) cruises with ROPOS in 2004 and Jason II in 2006. With the exception of one volcano (East Diamante), none of the vent sites visited by the ROVs were host to sulfide mineralization. Rather, they were characterized by high sulfidation mineral assemblages dominated by native sulfur. The sulfur was seen marking the vicinity of vent sites, or as sulfur ?chimneys? (e.g., NW Eifuku and Nikko), or more spectacularly as ?lakes? of molten sulfur, either occupying the summit crater of the volcano (e.g., Nikko), or perched on the flanks of the volcano, near the summit (e.g., Daikoku). Gas (H2S and CO2) was discharging through the molten sulfur. Evidence for these lakes to have either been substantially ?deeper? in their recent past (e.g., Nikko), or existing at other volcanoes (e.g., Seamount ?X?) is given by remnant ?pillars? of native sulfur that are reminiscent of rock pillars in lava lakes found along mid-ocean ridges.

This paper discussed a combined froth flotation and high pressure leaching (HPL) process to recover copper from mine tailings. At first, froth flotation were carried out using the mine tailings sample under various conditions in the presence of different pH (3.5-10) and sulfurizing reagent value (0-1000 g/t), respectively. As a result, optimum condition (sulfurizing reagent of 1000 g/t, pH of 10, PAX (collector) of 100 g/t and MIBC (frother) of 200 g/t) was found for froth flotation of copper. The effects of sulphuric acid concentration, leaching temperature, total pressure (steam pressure plus oxygen pressure) on high pressure leaching (HPL) of mine tailing were investigated using sulphuric acid solution in the presence of oxygen. The best conditions for HPL were obtained to be sulphuric acid concentration: 0 mol/L (water), leaching temperature: 170 ?, total pressure: 2 MPa, leaching time: 1 hr and pulp density: 100 g/L. The leaching rate of copper reached nearly 99 % and the concentration of copper in pregnant leach solution (PLS) was 0.24 g/L. Finally, copper in the mine tailing was recovered using froth flotation followed by HPL. As a result of a combined froth flotation and HPL, the vast majority of copper (99 %) from the mine tailings was extracted.

THE preliminary study of electrochemical desul-furization performed by Ohtani and Gokcen1 left a number of points concerning the process to be investigated. Two of these were i) the determination of the effect of greater current and voltage on the desulfurizing Flower of acid slags (% CaO/% SiO2- 1) and ii) the possibility of the loss of silica in slag by the reactions 2C (in metal) + SiO2 (slag) = Si (in metal) + 2CO(g) and C + SiO2 (in slag) = SiO(g) + cO(g) proceeding to a point at which the composition of the slag was sufficiently altered toward the basic side so a1.s to noticeably affect the rate of de-sulfurization. The apparatus and the procedure used in the present investigation were the same as those used by Ohtani and Gokcen, except the control circuit was connected to 120 v dc instead of 24 v dc and thereby allowed greater freedom in choosing the values of both current and voltage. The graphite crucible containing the melt and serving as the cathode was 3-in. high, and was of 1 1/2-in. ID with a graphite bar of 3/8-in. diam and 8-in. length threaded into the bottom for electrical connection. The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale leaching tests with recycled spent copper electrolytes and copper-nickel mattes produced from the Minnesota Duluth Complex concentrates. This report describes the first stage of an overall two-stage leach operation. The objective of this research was to determine the matte-leach technology required to convert spent copper electrolyte into an enriched nickel liquor suitable for a nickel refinery and there-fore essentially free of copper, iron, and sulfuric acid. The experimental variables investigated were matte composition, particle size, spent electrolyte content, pulp concentration, oxygenation, temperature, and time. The time required to produce an enriched purified nickel liquor decreased with increasing pulp concentration, temperature, and oxygenation, but increased with increasing particle size and electrolyte copper and acid content. Nickel-rich (about 50 g/l) liquors at a pH of about 4 and containing less than 1 g/l of copper and iron were produced at 70° C by leaching minus 325-mesh low-iron (less than 5 pct) matte for 8 hours with spent electrolyte containing 22.4 g/l Cu, 28.9 g/l Ni, less than 0.1 g/l Fe, and 50 g/l H2S04 at a pulp concentration of 1 kg of matte per liter of spent electrolyteo Varying the nickel content of the spent electrolyte from 11 to 101 g/l appeared to have no appreciable influence on the matte leaching characteristics.

Sadiola Gold Mine is an open pit operation located in Mali and owned by Anglogold Ashanti Ltd, Iamgold Corporation and the State of Mali. A conventional cyanidation process (cyanidation/CIP) treats 15,000 tpd (of a mixture of oxide and sulphide ores) at an average grade of 3 g/t Au. In 2002, the increasing tonnage of sulphides caused an increase in production costs and a decrease in gold extraction (from 95% to 70-76%). Because of the short retention time of the leach circuit (18 hours) and the refractory nature of the sulphides, gold leaching kinetics are critical. A laboratory investigation was initiated to evaluate actual plant practice and identify a means of improving the gold leaching rate. The study was conducted on a "soft" sulphide gold sample containing 4.96 g/t Au, 0.4 g/t Ag, 2.5% pyrite, 1.2% arsenopyrite, and 0.2% pyrrhotite with a P80 of 74microns. Pre-leaching significantly influenced the gold leaching rate. A short pre-leach (2 hours) performed at pH 8, a DO of 8 ppm, and with 300 g/t lead nitrate added at the start or the end, produced the preferred conditions. Pre-leaching for more than 2 hours was detrimental to gold extraction. The cyanide concentration had to be maintained at 450 ppm NaCN to reach a maximum gold extraction within the retention time of the circuit. A maximum extraction of 81.3% Au was obtained in 20 hours (leach residue at 0.97 g/t Au). A high level of dissolved oxygen in the pre-leach was not of any benefit. Extension of gold leaching beyond 20 hours indicated that all leachable gold had been extracted by that time. Plant modifications were made to allow leaching of oxides and sulphides in separate circuits. Treatment of oxide ores is now performed at a higher rate. Sulphides are processed at a lower throughput, with 300 g/t lead nitrate, to allow a retention time of 22 hours. Combined throughput remains the same, and total gold recovery has increased from 76% to 80% for an additional gold production of 16,000 ounces per year.

Production of anhydrous zirconium tetrachloride by direct chlor- ination of a zirconium oxide carbon mixture in a silica-brick-lined chlorinator is described. Theory and thermodynamics of reactions are discussed. A pilot-model chlorinator and full-scale production equipment are described and operating data are included. ANHYDROUS zirconium tetrachloride required as a starting material in the Kroll process for production of ductile zirconium has been produced in this country principally by chlorination of the carbide or "carbonitride" made by reduction of zircon sand concentrates with carbon in the arc furnace. This process and the equipment used have been fully described.'.' It is well known that zircon or badde-leyite ores may be chlorinated directly with chlorine in the presence of carbon, and this one-step approach would seem at first glance to be preferable to the two steps involved in the carbide-chloride operation. As previously discussed1 considerations leading to adoption of the longer process were: 1—Chlorination of the carbide proceeds rapidly at temperatures below 500°C, whereas temperatures above 900°C were considered necessary for chlorination of zircon-carbon mixtures. 2—The highly exothermic nature of the carbide-chlorine reaction makes it self-sustaining, while heat must be supplied continuously in direct chlorination of the ore. 3—Silicon was thought to be chlorinated along with zirconium in the direct chlorination of zircon, leading to high chlorine consumption. In production of carbide in the arc furnace, silicon is driven off as silicon monoxide and does not enter the chlorinator. 4—For efficient direct chlorination, the ore must be finely ground and intimately mixed with carbon, and the mixture briquetted. 5—Direct chlorination requires a much larger chlorinator for a given production capacity than chlorination of carbide. Recently it has become necessary to produce large quantities of zirconium metal from a chemically purified zirconium oxide. Since the cost of the latter is high, the relatively high losses encountered in production of carbide in the arc furnace could not be tolerated, and a graphite resistor furnace5 was developed for production of carbide, which was then chlorinated in equipment previously used for chlorinating arc-furnace carbide. This method of operation was quite satisfactory, and losses in the carbid-ing step were minimized. However, operating costs were relatively high, and the process did not lend itself particularly well to large-scale operation because of the multiplicity of small units required and the hand labor needed to load, unload, and maintain the furnaces. To chlorinate the carbide, a vertical-shaft chlorinator was used in which the charge was heated with a central split graphite-rod resistor.' Operation of this chlorinator was somewhat less satisfactory with the resistor furnace carbide than it had been with the arc-furnace carbide due, principally, to the differences in physical properties of the carbide. The arc-furnace carbide is obtained as a fused metallic-appearing mass which can be crushed to -1/4 in. with production of a minimum of fines, whereas the resistor-furnace product is lightly sintered and produces a large proportion of fines in crushing and handling. These fines tend to pack in the chlorinator and promote channeling. which results in poor chlorine efficiency and low capacity. Data based on production of 22,000 lb of chloride from resistor-furnace carbide in this equipment are shown in Table I. Necessity for increasing production of chloride from about 2,000 to 15,000 lb per week led to further investigation of possible methods for direct chlorination of the oxide or oxide-carbon mixtures. Direct chlorination of the pure oxide presents much less difficulty than chlorination of zircon sand or oxide ores. The oxide is easily ground to —200 mesh, and no silica is present to cause excessive consumption of chlorine or contamination of the product. The Bureau of Mines investigated thermodynamic properties of Mn304 (manganomanganic oxide) and Mn203 (manganese sesquioxide). The standard Gibbs energies of formation (?Gf°) of Mn304 and Mn203 from their lower oxides were determined with high-temperature galvanic cells using stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnO, Mn304//Zr0 2//02(g, 0.0112 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction 6Mn0(c) + 02(g, 0.0112 atm) = 2Mn304(c), where- 02 refers to indicated partial pressure of oxygen at the reference electrode. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, Mn304, Mn203//ZrO2//02(g, 0.0115 atm), Pt, with the overall cell reaction 4Mn304(c) + 02(g, 0.0115 atm) = 6Mn203(c). Equilibrium oxygen pressures for the Mn0-Mn304-02 and Mn304-Mn203-02 systems were measured and may be expressed for the respective systems as [23,400 109 P02 T + 11.91 (764.9 - 1,208.6 K) and log p02 = - 11,957 + 9.66 T (968.6 - 1,208.2 K),] where pressure (p02) is in atmospheres and temperature (T) is in kelvins. Standard thermodynamic properties of Mn304 and Mn203 were derived from these measurements and auxiliary thermodynamic data from the literature.

"Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

THE purpose of this study was to measure the vapor pressure of silver as the first step in the determination of activities in silver alloys and to test the limitations of the method adopted. In order to work at low pressures, below 2x10-2 mm of mercury, the orifice effusion technique was employed. To shorten the time of collection of silver from the atomic beam, radioactive silver (Ag110) was used as a tracer. The rate of effusion of a monatomic vapor from an "ideal" orifice, where the thickness of the orifice edge is negligible compared with the orifice diameter, can be readily calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, G = vM a p/v2pRT where G is the weight of material effusing from the orifice per unit time; p is the vapor pressure at oven temperature, T; R is the gas constant; M is the molecular weight of the vapor; and a is the orifice area. Consolidating constants and expressing as the weight of material effusing from the orifice in a period of time, t, (5.83)(10-2) (vM) (a) (t) (p)/vT where GT is total weight of monatomic vapor effused (g); M is molecular weight of the effusing tracer vapor; a is orifice area (cm2); t is time of effusion (sec); p is vapor pressure of effusing material (mm of Hg); and T is oven temperature (OK). The vapor effuses from the orifice in a hemispherical pattern, and the intensity of the beam in any direction is given by the cosine distribution law.' Considering this, the weight of effused material can be calculated from the amount of material passing through a circular collimator intersecting the beam. In this research assisted leaching of chalcopyrite using sodium peroxodisulfate was studied. Electrochemical techniques such as Tafel analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to investigate the surface reactions of a chalcopyrite electrode in the presence and absence of Na2S2O8. According to the results, addition of sodium peroxodisulfate increases the current exchange of the corrosion process and prevents the formation of a passive layer on the surface of the electrode. EIS tests show the trans-passive dissolution of the passive layer on the chalcopyrite electrode in presence of Na2S2O8. Equivalent electrochemical circuits were modeled for Na2S2O8-free and -containing solutions and the model parameters were compared to determine the effect of S2O8 2− on chalcopyrite dissolution. Copper dissolution from pure chalcopyrite mineral and chalcopyrite concentrate was carried out using 15 g/L sulfuric acid solution with and without Na2S2O8. Simultaneous presence of 10 g/L ferric ion and 40 g/L peroxodisulfate salt results in about 40 and 18% of Cu extraction from chalcopyrite concentrate and pure chalcopyrite mineral, after 96 h, respectively.

Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

EQUILIBRIA in the reactions between gases and liquid metals have been the subject of many interesting investigations. The experimental realization of true equilibrium, however, is questionable in certain cases due to the lack of conclusive studies in reaction rates. It -will be shown here that a systematic interpretation of rate studies with the analysis of prevailing experimental conditions leads to valuable practical information. The reactions of particular interest are: H2(g) +S(inFe) - H2S(g) [1] H2(g) +O (inFe) =H2O(g) [21 2H2(g) + SiO2(s) = 2H2O(g) + - (inFe) [3] The usual and perhaps the most convenient method of investigation may be illustrated with reaction 1. A stream of gas mixture consisting of H2 + H2S is passed over or bubbled through the liquid metal at constant temperature. The ratio of H2S/H2 in the entrant mixture is fixed in each experimental run, and, therefore, the composition of melt varies until the establishment of equilibrium. The purpose of this paper is to derive a formula expressing the minimum time required for the establishment of equilibrium and to compare the calculated values from such a formula with the available data. Equations Reaction 1 is used for the purpose of illustrating the derivation. Let E represent the equilibrium and X the nonequilibrium sulphur in weight percent at any time t in minutes. For the sake of simplicity, it is first assumed that E > X although the results are of general applicability without restriction. It has been shown by Morris and Williams' that within a difference of 1 pct S or less, i.e., E-X5 1.00, the value of K'1 = Ph2s/Ph2.S% is very nearly constant. The maximum ratio of available Ph2s/Ph2 = H,S/H,, from which sulphur can be absorbed by metal, is equal to H2S/H2 in equilibrium with E (which equals H2S/H2 in the entrant gas), minus H,S/H, in equilibrium with X. Thus: Available H2S/H2 = EK'1 - XK'1 [4] Eq. 4 expresses that sulphur can be absorbed by metal from the H2S/H2 in the entrant gas until the gas leaving the metal assumes a value of H2S/H2 which is in equilibrium with the dissolved sulphur X at that time. H,S constitutes up to approximately 1 pct of the gas mixture. Its disassociation into H2 and SL is about 1 pct at 1600°C, hence, the H2S/H2 impinging on the surface of metal is very close to that in the entrant gas. "A hydrometallurgical process for recycling spent Zn-MnO2 batteries was developed, involving leaching with sulfuric acid, purification by precipitation and metals separation for further recovery. Leaching of zinc oxide was easily attained while for manganese oxide was rather difficult depending on temperature and acid concentration. At 90°C and with the liquid/solid ratio of 20 L/kg, more than 95% of zinc is recovered in 30 minutes with 0.5M H2SO4. To attain similar recovery for manganese, higher levels of acid concentration and time are needed (e.g 0.7 M and 2 hours). After leaching a purification step is necessary to remove iron co-dissolved through Fe(III) precipitation. Separation of zinc from manganese by solvent extraction with 1M DEHPA follows in the process route. The countercurrent multistage separation diagram developed allows the production of a zinc electrolyte with 120 g/L Zn and 0.005 g/L Mn, and a raffinate with 16 g/L Mn and 0.013 g/L Zn.IntroductionThe recycling of spent Zn-MnO2 batteries is carried out by dedicated recyclers using several process alternatives [1]. Most of the running processes use pyrometallurgical technologies [2] based on zinc distillation. Alternative treatments by hydrometallurgy have been reported [3-5] but its application is scarce.In order to contribute to the development of alternative solutions, a process for recycling batteries based on Zn-MnO2 systems has been studied. The process is based on the hydrometallurgical treatment of spent batteries in sulfuric acid media (Figure 1). The process starts with the physical processing by shredding using cutting grinders, where the batteries are opened and size reduced, allowing the liberation of the interior electrode particles or pastes. The fines can be then separated and the coarse material containing the steel scrap can be treated to remove the remaining aggregate electrode. The final scrap also contains some plastics and other non-metal materials and can be further valorized."

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

The Martha deposit is an economic giant epithermal gold deposit, with mined and unmined resources of more than 218 000 kg (7 Moz) Au. The Au-Ag, base metal sulphide-bearing quartz lodes in the Martha deposit form an extensive braided pattern within hydrothermally altered andesite wall rock. There are five main quartz lodes: 1.      Martha, 2.      Welcome, 3.      Edward, 4.      Empire, and 5.      Royal.   Information from historic mine plans and reports has been used to determine the depth distribution of economic ore within the Martha deposit. Economic ore (average of 10 g/t Au) in the Martha underground mine was at a maximum width and strike length between a vertical depth of 160 and 350 m. Below this depth the quartz-sulphide lodes continue, but the grade declined to sub-economic grades (< 4g/t Au) at about 575 m depth and economic ore shoots were localised, mainly on the hangingwall side of the lodes. Samples from exploration drill holes indicate that this decrease is associated with a depth zonation from electrum-bearing Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag sulphide ore (average 10 g/t Au) to sub-economic (< 2 g/t Au) electrum-poor Zn-Pb sulphide mineralisation.

Based on lab and pilot-plant tests to recover gold, silver and lead of a Russian deposit, a collective and flotation concentration flow sheet with lead and sulfide concentrates was proposed. The type of the deposit is gold-sulfide-quartz-bearing. The recovery of gold, silver, and lead to a lead concentrate was 47.4%, 68.1% and 70.7%, respectively. The grade of gold and silver grade was 170 g/t and 372 g/t, respectively. The mass percent of lead, zinc and arsenic mass percent was 41.7%, 0.34% and 0.63%, respectively. The recovery of gold and silver recovery to a sulfide concentrate was 50.1% and 28.8% at the grade of gold 20.5 g/t and silver 66.2 g/t. Sulfide concentrate with arsenic mass percent ~3% was biooxidised followed by CIL and obtaining metal at the site as well as zinc concentrate from bioleaching solutions with zinc mass percent 45% at its 64% recovery. The total gold and silver recovery using a developed technology with the account of their treatment at a polymetallic plant was 92.2% and 93.7%, respectively.
