This paper presents a kinematic approach for blast modeling with examples of blast models that were developed previously. A kinematic approach was applied successfully in developing blasting models that can simulate all blast design parameters for field applications. Several applied blasting models have been developed and applied widely in the world. A kinematic approach to blast modeling refers to using measurements of kinematic quantities such as the velocity, strain, or displacement and well-established assumptions to model blasting phenomena, rather than being restricted to use first principal of physics, such as, the stress- and material-constitutive relations. The kinematic quantities are easy to measure in the field. Due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of rock mass properties, using first principles of physics, many parameters of rock and explosive properties must be involved, which are hard or impossible to quantify. This creates a major impediment when trying to simulate the total process of blasting based upon first principles of physics. The 3D kinematic model for muckpile formation was developed and applied to open pit blasts. The multiple blasthole fragmentation model developed during recent years has been applied successfully to many mine sites around the globe. These models are typical examples of blast modeling using the kinematic approach, which enables the models to catch major trends of the blasting process and explicitly simulate full blast design parameters and complex geometries. Blast modeling using the kinematic approach results in easy model calibration and validation against field measurements and effective applications to practical problems. Using kinematic models of the muckpile formation and the multiple blasthole fragmentation model, this paper demonstrates the merits of the kinematic approach for blast modeling. New developments of the models were also presented in the paper, which illustrate the potential of the kinematic modelling approach.

Salar basins in the Andean Highlands of Northern Chile contain ground-water resources which could be used to satisfy requirements for the mineral industry in the region. Salars occur in arid zones; average precipitation is about 200 millimeters per year at altitudes of about 4,000 meters, and average annual evaporation is two meters or more. The salar basins are hydrogeologic sinks where water flows from recharge areas at the margins of the basins to discharge areas at the salt encrusted salar at the lowest point of the basin floor. Groundwater circulation occurs principally in the alluvial and fractured bedrock aquifers. Results of pumping tests for exploration and production water wells indicate a range in maximum sustained pumping yield of 62 to 126 liters per second, and where abundantly fractured, ignimbrite comprises the most prolific aquifer. Chemical quality of groundwater is good. Long-term pumping from properly located production wells in the salar basins would result in lowering of groundwater levels and salvage of water in areas where groundwater is lost via evaporation.

"On January 9, 2014, a large chemical spill occurred on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV. Within hours, the potable water supply for more than 300,000 people was contaminated, and the incident captured national headlines for weeks. Although the primary chemical, crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, is deemed nonhazardous, the impacts of the spill are significant – with all stakeholders, including the public, members of industry, and relevant government agencies experiencing losses. This case highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management, shifting from crisis control and remediation to crisis prevention and risk management. INTRODUCTION On the morning of January 9, 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a 48,000-gallon storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal, and is deemed nonhazardous in terms of transportation and storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries, Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility where the spill occurred from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein & McWhirter, 2014). The spill site was located just over a mile upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a “Do Not Use” order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a). With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the “Do Not Use” order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until January 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below this level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at concentrations as low as 0.55 ppb by individuals experienced in odor identification (Rosen et al., 2014); and even individuals with no such training can detect pure MCHM at just 7 ppb (WVTAP, 2014). The fact that this chemical can be sensed at such low levels – indeed far below those considered safe – undoubtedly added to growing public concern. In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until February 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAWb, 2014), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAWc, 2014)."

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

Due to the world's ever increasing minerals and energy demands, process plants have to cope economically with ever growing throughput rates. This trend has accelerated the development of high capacity vibrating screens. Screens with screening areas of 30 to 50 square meter (322 to 540 square feet) and width of 5.5 meter (18') are technically possible and are being used presently with great success. This paper will concern itself with the general aspects of large screen design, by using modern technology and the latest findings with regards to fatigue strengths relative to the laws of vibration. It also will investigate the technical and economical limits of such designs.

When tunneling through karstic terrain, diverse and complex karst structures are to be expected. By means of drilling ahead of the face using drill jumbos, these structures can be detected to such a degree that by applying proper support measures both open karst cavities and karst holes surrounded by boulders embedded in soft rock can be mastered without causing any break-outs. Support measures such as spiles ahead of excavation, sealing off cavities, back?lling with sand, etc. have to be planned schematically and adapted to the dimensions and formations of the karst structures on site. An essential requirement for a smooth excavation procedure is the availablility of all necessary tunneling equipment for excavation by drill and blast as well as for excavation of soil, with experienced tunnel engineers being in charge of any adaptions on site.

This paper describes the decomposition of bulk samples to fine particles using alkali metal vapors. Basalt, pyrite, alumina, pyrex and quartz glass samples were exposed to sodium vapors at elevated temperatures for different time periods up to 30 hours. Examination of the particles showed that fragmentation occurred preferentially along grain boundaries. Emphasis of this paper is on the theory of the degradation mechanism and the size distribution of the particles produced.

An exploration bore core sample of coal ought to be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and particle composition that reflects, insofar as possible, a process stream of? raw? coal it represents. Often, coal cores are reduced with a laboratory crushing machine, the product of which may not match the raw coal size distribution or size fraction composition. This study employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis in order to characterize the core material in terms of first-order and zeroth-order breakage rate constants. These are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during excavation and handling. Initial drop-shatter and dry tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores, to reduce material variables and . conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores.? Cores of three different coal beds --Illinois No.6, Upper Freeport, and Pocahontas No. 5 -were subjected to drop-shatter and dry batch tumbling tests to determine breakage response. Comparison of coal preparation plant feed with a crushed bore core and a bore core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling (all from the same Illinois No.6 coal mining property) indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed than the crushed core.

The Communaute Urbaine de Montreal is currently involved in construction of the South Interceptor which consists of 53 kilometers (33 miles) of 1,800 mm (6.0 ft) to 5,400 mm (18.0 ft) diameter tunnels for the purpose of collecting, storing, and delivering sanitary and combined sewage to the treatment plant. Work is divided into ten separate contracts; nine of which have already been bid. The purpose of this paper is to describe construction activities that have been performed through the end of 1986 with emphasis on a general layout of facilities, a summary of subsurface conditions, and brief descriptions of actual construction activities for the six contracts where tunneling has been performed. All projects are being excavated with tunnel boring machines.

"In slurry balanced shield tunneling, how to ensure the safety of construction and to reduce the influence on the environment has arisen wide attention of scholars both at home and abroad. But now it is still in the stage of experience as to the instability mechanism of the slurry shield tunneling excavation and its stability analysis. Based on the large-diameter model tests and FLAC 3D, the effect of the different waterhead (non-water, 0.9m and 1.1m) on stability of excavation face of slurry balanced shield is investigated, and the stability mechanics is proposed. The results show that: waterhead heights play an important role on excavation face instability features of slurry balanced shield in sandy stratum, Regarding the different waterhead heights, the development mode of the excavation face instability features can be divided into non-water mode, lower-waterhead mode and higher-waterhead mode; soil arching is existed in the process of excavation face instability, the settlement of ground lags behind excavation face failure, the soil arching will block or eliminate the effects of ground settlement; excess pore water pressure need to be considered besides earth pressure and hydrostatic pressure when the supporting force is calculated. INTRODUCTION With the development of the society, for the cities all over the world, the exploitation of underground space has become an important measure to solve the problems about population, resources and environment and an important way to heal the city syndrome and implement the sustainable development strategy of city. Constructing shield tunnel with large diameter is the major trend for development of tunnel construction (Yin, 1999). Instability of excavation face caused by relief of shield soil stress is still one problem that needs to be solved (Xiang, 2001). How to reduce the effects of construction on surrounding environment? How to accurately determine the instability of shield excavation face and to effectively and reasonably select the supporting force? These are the crucial problems which need to be solved during shield construction."

The simultaneous use of two or more families of collectors can sometimes improve one or more key flotation performance indicators, especially if the ore under consideration contains several minerals bearing the same metal. The maximum amount of collectors that can be used is limited by the need to maintain a high concentrate grade and selectivity. Therefore, when more than one collector is required, an experimental design that allows variations of both the proportions and the amounts with respect to other process factors has to be selected to find the optimum dosage. This type of design is known as "process factors in mixture amount experiment". It is a powerful design suitable for discovering the existence and evaluating the magnitude of the interactive effects between various flotation parameters. This paper elaborates the principles on which such a design is based, and demonstrates its usefulness with a case study.

The use of computerized steady-state process design balance systems has reduced engineering man-hours by as much as 80 to 1 over conventional manual balance calculations. The popularity and widespread use of such systems by the minerals industry increased dramatically in recent years, but these systems were mainly available for use on large main frame computers and lacked graphic capability. A considerable amount of engineering manpower was required to "conceptualize" a process flowsheet. After sketching the flowsheet layout, the engineer was still faced in most cases with a time-consuming reduction of his graphic concept of the problem to numerical data required by the balance program. Furthermore, output from these early systems was usually in tabular numeric form. The computer results then were transferred manually to a pictorial representation of the process. A new process design balance system has been developed which runs on a popular and inexpensive personal computer. This system combines modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) principles and the graphics capabilities of the personal computer to allow the process engineer to define a flowsheet problem while creating a process flow diagram. The system provides balance results in both pictorial and tabular form. Past, present, and potential applications of the system are discussed, and an analysis of the cost benefits derived from its use are provided.

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam rocks and overburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs. Using finite-difference modeling, experience in many U.S. mines and measurements of the pressure arch width, the author has reviewed the engineering design factors that control seismicity in room-and-pillar retreat operations for stiff stratigraphic conditions in deep western U.S. mines. By back analyzing the overburden response in now understood to have been inadequately designed historic room-and-pillar mine, the overburden collapse mechanism is addressed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths, and sequence of retreat.

Over the years, numerous studies have been conducted to characterize the floatability of coal pyrite. Unfortunately, many of the results obtained using isolated samples of coal pyrite are not directly applicable to actual coal flotation systems where liberation and entrainment may be the major factors affecting pyrite rejection. In this paper, the association of pyrite with other coal constituents is investigated, and the data are presented for feed and product streams obtained from release analysis tests. Release analysis is used to minimize the effects of entrainment. Particle distributions for each stream are presented as functions of size and composition in order to discern the behavior of free and composite particles.

This paper documents an effort to explain cutterhead torque behavior observed during slurry pressure balance TBM tunneling through soft ground on the Los Angeles Clearwater project. AI machine learning and mechanics model-based learning was used to characterize cutterhead torque behavior including the TBM operating and ground parameters that influence cutterhead torque. Also, key parameters were from the slurry circuit data, including fines content, in-situ density, pore water fraction and solids content were included. The paper details what was learned using these new data-driven approaches as well as limitations with AI machine learning.

2001, the New Jersey Transit Authority commissioned the JV Merco-Obayashi with the rehabilitation contract of the approximately 130-year-old, 4,200 ft long, partially brick- lined Bergen North Tunnel. The contract entailed the tunnel enlargement, shotcrete and rock dowels initial support according to the NATM, a waterproofing system, tunnel drainage and a cast-in-place concrete lining. The rock conditions encountered required design adaptations and significant modifications of the initial tunnel support. Flexibility, skill and extensive experience on the Authority’s and Contractor’s side finally lead to a success. This paper describes the operations and design modifications carried out.

The number and the type of trucks and shovels are two important factors in determining the optimal design parameters of an open-pit mining system. Characteristics of trucks' arrival and service-time distributions determine the performance measures of a truck-shovel system when it is modeled as a closed queuing network. In all of the previous analytical queuing studies of truck-shovel systems, trucks are assumed to be identical with respect to their arrival and service-time distributions. This assumption, although desirable for reducing computational difficulties, causes either underestimation or overestimation of the performance measures depending on the number and type of equipment used in the model. The relative error in performance measures could be significant when the number of different types of trucks and shovels is large. In this paper an analytical method is proposed to model the truck-shovel system as a multiple-chain closed queuing network. This approach would provide the capability of estimating system performance measures for planning purposes when the truck fleet is not necessarily composed of identical trucks. An example of truck-shovel systems is discussed to show how the incorporation of different types of trucks does affect performance measures.

In the course of the grinding experiments conducted at Climax over the past twenty years one interesting phenomenon was discovered. This was that balls made of certain types of steel grind more ore than some others. The most significant variation was found in the results secured with a hard alloyed forged bail compared with the forged carbon ball supplied by most ball manufacturers These findings were confirmed in many repeated controlled tests. The value of these tests depends on the methods used, the facilities available and the care with which the investigations were conducted. These are described in the following. This testing has largely been done in eight 91 x 81 low discharge ball mills in closed circuit with 7811 duplex screw classifiers. The mills run at 20 RPM on a feed approximately minus 3/8 inch. The ore is ground through 28 - 35 mesh in one stage. Each mill and auxiliary classifier is in a separate, parallel grinding and flotation section The, ore to each: section is the same in every particular and is fed to each mill bin from a common conveyor tripper. The ore from the bin to the ball mill is weighed on a conveyor scale. The power input to each mill motor is determined with a watt hour meter which measures the power to the mill motor only. Both the scales and meters are checked periodically by standard methods and have been found to give consistent readings. Automatic samplers are employed on each section to obtain accurate measurement of the size reduction. A size analysis of the classifier overflow is made each shift and a composite size analysis is obtained from a weighted average of the various shift analyses. The mills are driven by 450 horsepower synchronous motors so that there is no speed variation and shell liner age is kept as nearly the same as possible in mills under test. The same set of operators is assigned to a mill under test as to the control mill. In all other particulars such as ball load, mill density, liner design, etc., the mills are operated in precisely the same manner. This is an ideal arrangement for plant testing. From observations of ball mill performance over the past twenty years, it is the opinion of the operating staff that variations of as little as one to two percent in mill capacities may be determined if sufficient operating hours are devoted, to a test. Relations between mill capacities, fineness of grinds and power consumptions have been established with a high degree of accuracy. In Table I are given the figures for one test. These show that while the grind with the hard ball was slightly coarser, the tons ground per hour was 5.4 percent greater with the soft ball, and 6.1 percent greater on the basis of minus 100 mesh produced. The power consumed per ton with the hard ball was 4.4 percent greater on a tons per hour basis. The soft ball was inferior in wearing qualities and steel consumption per ton of ore was 24 percent greater with it. In this test the mills were charged with the two different balls for a period of three months to allow the ball loads to come to equilibrium. In Table II are given the specifications of the two balls. The difference in grinding rates may be accounted for by the nature of the ball surfaces. The surfaces of the soft balls after being worn a while are rougher to the touch. Enlarged photographs of the worn-in surfaces of hard and soft balls are shown in Figure I. These show the presence of scratches or skid marks on the hard ball surface which indicates less nipping effect. The Climax ore pulp has a pH of 6.0 and is in a dispersed state. The viscosity is low compared with most ores especially those that are conditioned with lime. This would lower the tendency of the pulp to adhere to the balls with a lower grinding efficiency as a result. It was also thought that the relative rates of wear from surface to center might affect the make-up of an equilibrium ball charge. This probably has little effect on capacity as shown by the size analyses of the two ball charges in Table III. This hypothesis was subsequently investigated by the use of rationed charges. Foreign and domestic companies find the mineral potential of this country's stern public lands, its capital markets, political stability, and "open-door" policy attractive for hard mineral exploration. Traditionally, exploration in the US has been geographically based and responsibility oriented at the district level. The 1970s brought a decentralized approach to exploration as major non-metal companies began to diversify into hard minerals. The emphasis was on capital intensive metal and energy projects involving bulk-tonnages. The recent economic downturn in metals has caused many of the new participants to withdraw from the mineral scene. The surviving companies have shifted their emphasis toward medium scale precious metal projects having high operating margins and rapid return on equity. Exploration expenditures in the United States are now principally focused on gold and silver to the exclusion of practically all other commodities. In the search for precious metals companies have scaled back their exploration efforts and have began to apply new approaches to target selection. The search is being assisted by rapidly evolving conceptual models. The change in orientation has led to numerous new discoveries. The finds are essentially "rediscoveries" that c,-re previously uneconomic. The majority are low-grade surface deposits that have involved low discovery costs and short lead times for development by low-cost mining and beneficiation methods. The emphasis on gold to the exclusion of all other commodities raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 80s.

A new agenda has risen. Born out of governments' policies and world economies, the years ahead will carry with them reduced growth. For inflation dependent and capital intensive industries, such as metals and mining, as well as most other natural resource industries, a period of long-term contraction in outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. This will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity in some cases, but only if the total cost of production, including cash operating and debt service costs comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook can be characterized as bearish. As one major U.S. bank economist put it, mining companies planning their five-year forecast from 1984 out, should take the current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or slightly declining. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low cost producer, that is one with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed.
