The utility of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the separation of quartz from hematite is demonstrated. Yeast cells, as well as their metabolites, functioned as flotation collectors, depressants or flocculants and dispersants for hematite and quartz. Interaction between yeast and the above minerals resulted in significant surface chemical changes, rendering quartz surfaces hydrophobic and hematite hydrophilic. Mineral-specific extracellular proteins and exopolysaccharides were secreted by yeast cells when grown in the presence of quartz and hematite, respectively. Quartz could be efficiently separated from hematite through microbially induced flotation and selective flocculation.

Environmental improvement efforts are focusing with increasing intensity on pollutants resulting from combustion. The high cost of removing these pollutants at the power station is well documented. Physical coal cleaning has always been and should remain the most economic method of reducing sulfur oxide emission from coal combustion. It is critical in the selection of preparation plant circuitry to consider capital and operating costs, as well as the level of sulfur reduction. This paper describes the technical criteria which must be used for efficient process selection and summarizes the cleaning systems available or in development.

The prediction of damage to a structure that is to be undermined is generally a two step process. First, the expected ground movements (the displacements, slopes, curvatures, and strains) are estimated using available (often empirical) predictive methods or survey data from a site of comparable geology, topography, and mining geometry. Second, the prospects for damage to the structure are assessed by comparing the expected ground movements to tolerable limits, some of which appear in the technical literature as damage criteria. The inverse problem of relating observed building damage to causative ground movements involves essentially the same elements. In either case, the usefulness of published damage criteria to subsidence problems may be limited in all but the most elementary cases. This paper considers several cases where structural behavior and site specific details had to be taken into account in assessing the relationship between damage and ground movements.

The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron which impart color and in turn degrade the quality of the ore. The mineralogical investigations indicate that titanium element originates from mainly rutile with small amounts of sphene. Conventionally, fatty acids and particularly sodium oleate are extensively used in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores with reasonable success. In this study, new reagents, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate have been used to float colored impurities before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to fatty acids and hydroxamate. The mechanism of the action is elaborated on the basis of experimental data.

The ability to track miners and communicate with them while they work in underground coal mines is important during normal daily operations, and critical in emergency conditions. As was evident during recent incidents at underground coal mines worldwide, communication with miners and the knowledge of their location is of great importance for rescue efforts and the preservation of life. Numerous technologies have been developed, adapted, and deployed to meet tracking requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Evaluating the performance of these systems has proven to be difficult for mine operators, system manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. The MINER Act of 2006 requires operators to improve accident preparedness by developing an emergency response plan specific to each mine. With the recent implementation of the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006, all underground coal mines in the United States are subject to the mandates of legislation concerning communication and tracking system installation. As of June 2011, 203 new or revised tracking and/or communication systems had been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), with nearly 50 other systems or revisions in the approval process (MSHA, 2011). At that time, the available approved systems for underground coal mine use included these types: ? Leaky Feeder Communication Systems ? Fixed Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Wireless Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Medium Frequency (MF) Communication Systems ? Communication System Peripherals Other types of tracking systems have since been developed and some manufacturers are seeking approval for use in this application. Some of the new products include Through-the-Earth (TTE) systems and various radio frequency (RF) adaptations. New technologies that are currently being developed and deployed in other industrial applications should also be considered, including acoustical, optical, inertial, and hybrid technologies To date, no uniform method has been employed in the industry to effectively compare and evaluate the performance of installed systems. Neither industry operators nor regulatory agencies can accurately assess the capabilities of installed systems in the continuously changing mine environment. There is need for a uniform evaluation method that provides the ability to assess how different systems and technologies perform in various mining applications, and whether they can satisfy the regulatory requirements.

Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.

The most important difference between weathering and alteration, which are the definition of the change in rocks that occur with the help of physical and chemical effects, is a new product is formed as a result of alteration. Although atmospherical conditions are the most important factor during rock change, geothermal fields play a large role in the developing of alteration phenomenon. Because every geothermal system shows different characteristics including the chemistry of geothermal fluids and their potential applications, alteration on the field is important for the studies to find geothermal energy sources and to obtain the thermal fluids. The development of weathering and alteration which is the mark of interaction , between the physical and chemical properties of geothermal fluids and gases with the reservoir and wall rock, gives out important data about the hydrogeology, hydrology, reservoir conditions and characteristics of reservoir rocks of the geothermal field. Therefore defining the development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in a geothermal field and modeling the change in rocks, is very important for the benefication of the geothermal field economically. In this study 70 km2 that reside between Kösedere plains, Uzunburun, Çamtepe, Centirler villages in Çanakkale - Ayvacik - Tuzla geothermal field were studied and subsurface travel of saline thermal fluids and their interaction with the rocks and development of weathering and alteration phenomenon in the field were investigated. For this purpose geological mapping of the field were done and observations and measurements as well as rock sampling were carried in locations more than 220. As the result of petrographical investigations of rock samples development of weathering and alteration phenomenon were defined and 16 rock samples out of 220 that represent the field in general were chosen to be chemically analized and after that geochemical comments on the Tuzla geothermal field were made. Also hydrothermal alteration zones that are located in Tuzla Tepe, on which weathering and alteration phenomenon is observed as widespread and thermal water discharge locations in the near perimeter of Tuzla Tepe were mapped and from these data rock change in Tuzla geothermal field were modeled.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

The Hardy Cross iterative method is the most popular technique for solving a ventilation network problem with natural air splitting. This method traditionally solves each mesh equation by an approximation during each iteration. Thus, it is interesting from both a theoretical and a computational viewpoint to be able to solve for an exact solution to the mesh equation. Presented in this paper is an algorithm for computing the exact solution to the mesh equation with a variable fan pressure. The algorithm uses signum functions for air quantities to generate an alternative mesh equation in the form of a quadratic equation that has two solutions defined by the well-known quadratic formula. The condition that the derivatives of the alternative and the original equations must be the same provides a basis for the correct choice between the solutions.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

The coal industry is ever changing and complex. This article discusses some problems that must be faced and their projected economic effects. Coal's dominant market is for electric power generation. While growth rates in the 1980s will be nominal compared to historic growth rates, such growth will be substantial in absolute terms because it comes from a very large base. Higher growth is expected in the 1990s. History When looking toward the future, an examination of the past is helpful. Figures 1 and 2 present production and consumption statistics (expressed in short tons) on bituminous coal and lignite in the US from 1945 onward. After an all-time peak of 572 Mt (631 million st) in 1947, total production dropped to 356 Mt (392 million st) in 1954. Sustained growth in total production did not begin until the 1960s. Coal production from under-ground mines declined from more than 400 Mt (440 million st) in 1947 to about 295 Mt (325 million st) during 1965 to 1970. A further decline ensued until a strike in 1978 reduced production to only 218 Mt (240 million st). Underground mines produced 283 Mt (312 million st) in 1983. Coal production from surface mines has increased steadily since the early 1960s. While some of this increase has come from mines east of the Mississippi River, most has resulted from surface mines developed in the West. Production from surface mines west of the Mississippi River was 224 Mt (247 million st) in 1982. Total coal production from under-ground and surface mines, other than Western surface mines, continues to approximate levels of 40 years ago. In spite of several wage increases, increasing productivity in surface and underground mines enabled the coal industry to hold the average value f.o.b. mine to about $5.50/t ($5 per st) from the end of World War II to 1969. Under-ground mine productivity peaked at more than 13.5 t (15 st) per man-day in 1969. "The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."

Potash was first discovered in Saskatchewan in 1943 but its continuous extraction did not begin until 1962. In the years since then, potash has played an important role in the economic and political life of the province. And, as is well-known, the most eventful time in the life of the industry occurred in 1975 when the Government of Saskatchewan decided to become a major participant in potash production. To understand that decision, however, requires an understanding of the economic development of Saskatchewan and of relations between the industry and the government prior to 1975. This year, Saskatchewan celebrates its 75th year as a province. For most of those years, we have been an agrarian economy and society, dependent on exports of cereal grains, mostly wheat, for a livelihood. Even today, agriculture accounts for about 25% of the province's Gross Domestic Product (Economic Review, 1979, p. 7) and difficulties in agriculture spread rapidly to the rest of the provincial economy. The difficulties and risks that go hand in hand with being a "one crop" economy were known as long ago as 1920 but were not fully appreciated until the combination of depression and drought in the 1930's turned the prairie grain- belt into a dustbowl. Some idea of the severity of the depression is revealed by the following data: in 1928, Saskatchewan produced 321 million bushels of wheat. By 1931, the total fell to 132 million bushels and, in 1937, to a mere 37 million bushels. The value of agricultural products sold off farms fell from $273,000,000 in 1928 to a meagre $51,000,000 in 1937. The impact of such a fall of agricultural incomes was catastrophic since about 70% of the population of some 921,000 persons lived in rural, agriculture-dependent areas (Britnel.1, 1939, p. 14).

Southern Arizona has one of the world's principal concentrations of copper ore bodies. Twenty miles south of Tucson, close to the Mexican border at Sahuarita in Pima County, is the Twin Buttes mine. In mid-1973, the Anaconda Company and American Metals Climax Incorporated (AMAX) established a 50-50 partnership to operate and expand the Twin Buttes property. Anamax Mining Company was established as the operating company for this joint venture. The production from the Twin Buttes mine is shared between the two partners who market independently. A major expansion of the Twin Buttes operation has included an accelerated stripping programrne for the pit, an expansion of the sulphide concentrator, the construction of an oxide leach plant and a 57 MW diesel generating power station. Part of this major expansion, the large tonnage oxide processing plant was brought on stream in 1975 and is now close to design capacity. The "mine to market gap" has been closed by producing high-purity copper cathodes at the mine site from oxide ore reserves. By using a hydrometallurgical process route, copper production is possible with negligible effects on the environment.

The Tilden Mine is an iron ore mining, processing and pelletizing facility located on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It has a designed capacity to produce 8 million long tons of pellets annually from 21 million long tons of crude. It is a partnership owned by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Algoma Steel Corporation, LTV Steel Corporation, the Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling Pitts- burgh Steel Corporation and the Sharon Steel Corporation. Cleveland- Cliffs manages and operates the Tilden. The crude ore averages 35% iron and is primarily non-magnetic iron oxide and silica. The major ore mineral is martite. Hematite, earthy hematite, goethite and magnetite are also present. The principal gangue mineral is chert. The ore grains are mostly in the 10 to 25 micron size range which necessitates very fine grinding for liberation. The concentrating process is the most complex one used in the iron ore industry. The unique technology for Tilden was developed in the mid and late 60's. The design and construction occurred in the early 70's and operation of the first phase which was of 4 MLTPY capacity began in October. 1974. Expansion of the facility to the current 8 MLTPY capacity was completed in 1979. Chemicals are the key to the beneficiation process at the Tilden Mine. The flowsheet utilizes selective flocculation - desliming, cationic silica flotation and concentrate dewatering by thickening and filtering. Nine different process chemcals are used. The control of the reagent feed systems is highly auto- mated. The entire concentrator is operated from a central control room. The concentrator flow diagram is presented in figure 1. The plant consists of 12 primary autogenous grinding lines, a common crushing circuit to handle an intermediate product within the primary grinding section, 24 pebble mill lines with cyclones and deslime thickeners, 12 flotation lines, 4 concentrate thickeners and slurry tanks, 8 lines of filters with six machines per line, and 2 tailings thickeners. A pumping system was installed in 1980 to permit the direct return of tailings thickener overflow water back to the reuse water pumphouse.

Flotation columns and their variations are increasingly replacing conventional cells in mineral processing circuitry. While the operational characteristics of columns differ from those of conventional cells, the same scale-up methodologies are being employed in design. This practice may be attributed to poor understanding of the factors controlling throughput. The use of tall flotation columns is frequently justified on the requirement for increased particle residence time. It is shown that longer particle residence times in the column cell alone do not translate into increased recoveries. Throughput data from several industrial flotation column installations is presented. An attempt at using dimensional analysis to provide scale-up methodology for the factors controlling column throughput is made.

Laboratory testing for flotation circuit design is carried out on a routine basis in a large number of lab- oratories throughout the world. Usually a sample of ore, assumed to be characteristic of the material to be processed in a future plant, having a mass of the order of a few kilograms, is ground in a batch ball or rod mill, in the presence of water and some re- agents (for pH control, etc. .. ); after dilution to the adequate solid concentration, the resulting slurry is transferred into a laboratory batch flotation machine, having a volume which can vary from 0.5 to 8 10 -3m3. Various types of machines are in common use, manufactured by the same companies that market industrial size flotation machines. The operation of flotation in the laboratory is carried out by an experienced technician, who uses parameters such as impeller rotation speed, air flowrate addition, froth height, froth removal rate, in conjonction with reagent addition sequence, to "test" the ore. After flotation, the froth products ("concentrates"), and the solids remaining in the cell are filtered, dried, and analyzed for the various elements of interest. For flotation circuit design, a kinetic test is usually carried out, in which the froth products obtained at various times are collected to assess the time response of the ore in the laboratory machine with the combination of reagents used. Although this description is rather sketchy, it enables to outline some of the major difficulties in using laboratory data for flotation circuit design: 1. ore sample representatively 2. feed preparation procedure (laboratory compared to industrial scale) 3. laboratory procedures (type of ma- chine, type of operation, experimental errors. . . ) 4. flotation machine scale-up 5. flotation kinetic scale-up 6. flotation circuit design using laboratory data These various points will be discussed in the present paper, in order to stress the problem areas as well as possible solutions.
