Silica flotation with amine salts has been a commercial process for years in certain non-sulfide mineral systems. Phosphate rock and feldspar deposits are notable examples. Generally, the quartz is clean and coarse. Primary amines and imidazolines are used, usually in a mole weight range 250-300, ad often fairly impure grades of collectors are satisfactory. As the production of magnetic iron concentrates grew in Michigan, Minnesota, Canada and in foreign locations, the iron mining companies began to explore amine flotation of silica to improve these concentrates. Many of the mining companies, as well as reagent suppliers, government laboratories and university research teams, had already studied amine collectors for silica, but the application to magnetic iron concentrates presented a real commercial opportunity to apply the art. Amine flotation of silica has been accomplished by simple addition of a flotation cell, and possibly a regrind mill, at the end of the magnetic concentration process. The flotation system gave the mill operator a flexible method to control final grade caused by ore variations in the feed. It increased iron content with lower silica, which resulted in lower freight costs per unit Fe and better pellets for blast furnace use.

INTRODUCTION The Advisory Conference on Tunneling held in Washington, D.C. in 1970 under the auspices of the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) forecast that $54 billion would be expended by member countries on underground construction in the 1970s. Construction activity since the Conference indicates the forecast may have been conservative. Statistics in the report indicated a vast increase in tunneling projects for mass transit, hydro-electric development, railroad tunnels, sewer and sewage retention reservoirs and water tunnels. Development of equipment is required to meet the demands for high speed excavation and provide tunnel driving systems with maximum efficiency and capability to sustain high speed advance rates. BORING MACHINE CAPABILITY During the last decade, use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) has increased. Where ground conditions and limits of machine design criteria permit, circular tunnel sections are either the only section , or an alternate sections specified in the documents: a TBM is either required or is an acceptable alternate means of tunneling. The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

With the rapidly rising cost for electrical energy and the long range pre¬dictions for continued rising costs and even possible energy shortages, operation of rod, ball, autogenous and partial autogenous grinding circuits to efficiently utilize the power delivered to the mills will be demanded. This calls for a method to evaluate grinding circuit performance that is accurate, reliable and readily usable as an operating tool by supervisory, technical and operating personnel. Neither the Rittinger and Kick theories of comminution,(1) which preceded the Bond Theory by more than 50 years, had a mathematical means that could be used to predict and evaluate the performance of crushers and grinding mills used to comminute ores and rocks. This severly limited the practical use of these two theories, which were contradictory to each other. They have been superseded by the Bond Third Theory of Commnution.(1)

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. An empirical correlation to detennine laboratory mill grinding time has been developed. Grinding samples to 90 ± 5# below 147 micrometers was required for a flotation testwork at Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Research Center. The initial samples were all below 1 mm in size with different size distributions and work indices (Wi) ranging from 13 to 23 kWh/st. Grinding curves were determined for some initial samples. A correlation was developed between percent retained on 147 micrometers at a standard time and the time required to grind each sample to the required size. This correlation was then used to grind all samples, based on the preliminary grinding model. Finally, a statistical analysis with the size distribution of all samples was performed. The success of using the correlation was confirmed and an equation was determined using the data set.

Laminated rock can delaminate and fail under certain stress states. Delamination-caused roof fall and cutter roof failure is a common failure mechanism in roadways in Pittsburgh coal seam due to the existence of laminated shale roof. Two-dimensional numerical models were developed at laboratory scale based on the bonded particle method in order to simulate the delamination with particle flow code. In these models, an assembly of bonded particles and parallel weak planes represents the laminated rock. This model calibrated the micro-parameters of the bonded particlematerial and weak planes with laboratory data. The mechanism of fracturing and delamination in a laminated specimen was investigated using unconfined and confined compression test and unsupported roof compression test. The numerical results show that, under a constant horizontal stress, delamination occurswhen the stress is much lower than its compressive strength. The confined compressive test indicates that delamination is restrained by applying confining stress since delamination-caused failure does not occur during any stage of the confined compressive test. Unsupported roof compression tests showed propagation of cutter roof failure with initiation of cracks and delamination at the intersections of the roof and ribs. An outer failed zone and inner failed zone form separately. The separated zones connect and form an opening in the roof. The presented numerical results provide additional insight into process of delamination.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

In many instances, blasting exerts the dominant control over the economics and safety of excavation, where the materials involved are too hard and tough to be fragmented efficiently by other means. However, associated with the fragmentation process other effects very often result that are not desirable and may even be hazardous, such as fly rock, air blast, excessive overbreak, and damaging ground virbrations. It has always been the desire of those concerned with blasting to better control the forces involved so as to improve the breakage of materials, but at the same time reduce, or eliminate if possible, the unwanted side effects. Until the last decade or two, little was known of the phenomena concerned with blasting. However, since that time many investigators have studied blast mechanisms produced from both chemical and nuclear explosions, with the result that general concepts of the principles have been developed. But, in general, it is assumed that the energy from the explosion would be propagated spherically throughout the material, the latter of which for convenience of analyses is considered homogeneous and isotropic, i.e., the properties are the same in all directions, However, rocks are not isotropic as a rule, and evidence clearly indicates blasting forces rarely function uniformly or in spherical form as theorized.

The Hardy Cross iterative method is the most popular technique for solving a ventilation network problem with natural air splitting. This method tradition-ally solves each mesh equation by an approximation during each iteration. It is thus interesting from both theoretical and computational viewpoints to be able to solve for an exact solution to the mesh equation. Presented in this paper is an algorithm for computing the exact solution to the mesh equation with a variable fan pressure. The algorithm uses signum functions for air quantities to generate an alternative mesh equation in the form of a quadratic equation, which has two solutions defined by the well-known quadratic formula. The condition that the derivatives of the alternative and the original equations must be the same provides a basis for the correct choice between the two solutions.

This paper presents a history of a successful three year effort in locating a large, economic deposit of high purity limestone. The exploration program has been carried out by Ernest K. Lehmann & Associates, Inc., geological consultants, for Dravo Corporation, owner of the limestone property which is now under development. The permission of Mr. L. P. Struble, Jr, President of Dravo Lime Company, and Mr. M. W. Robinson, Director of Research and Development, to present this paper is gratefully acknowledged. The limestone property is on the Ohio River near Maysville in northern Kentucky, 60 miles east of Cincinnati (Fig. 1). The area lies at the eastern flank of the Cincinnati Arch, a regional structure where the Lower Paleozoic strata crop out below the adjacent younger sedimentary rocks of the Illinois and Apallachian basins. In general, the limestone formations of the Middle Ordovician High Bridge group offer the best potential for industrial limestone in Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and Indiana. These formations are exposed along the axis of the Cincinnati Arch in central Kentucky. Toward the west, east and north, strata of the High Bridge group are progressively deeper, concealed beneath a succession of interbedded fossiliferous limestone and shale. The High Bridge group limestone formations are shallow-marine deposits largely of tidal flat, shallow lagoon and related environments. Principal lithologies include cryptocrystalline micritic limestone and crystalline dolomitic limestone to dolomite. Shale and bioclastic limestone are subordinate but the proportion of shale increases in the basal formations. Characteristic, is the occurrence of several thin beds of bentonite that serve as regional stratigraphic key horizons.

Centrifugal air classification and li-quid-phase sedimentation are the principal methods of industrially sizing materials of dimensions smaller than those handled by screens. Increasing application of materials such as composites and high performance ceramics has furthered the need for closely-sized, fine, industrial mineral and synthetic products of controlled properties. Sedimentation can be used to separate very small sized particles but introduces problems of liquid-solid separation, de-agglomeration and drying. Some of the advantages and limitations of centrifugal air classification will be discussed and laboratory and plant measurements using centrifugal machines will be presented to support the discussion.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

The use of controlled recirculation can be dated back to the early 1930s. Although this method has been applied in many mines since then, a generalized comprehensive network analysis is still lacking. This paper presents a unique approach in which the ventilation network with a controlled district recirculation is divided into two subsystems: a main subsystem and a recirculation subsystem. The subsystems are analyzed individually and the results and their relationships are then integrated into discussions of the total ventilation system. The analysis of the recirculation subsystem is facilitated by introducing a non-dimensional parameter A, which represents the ratio of the air quantity for the working face to that for the subsystem. As a result, fan and regulator pressures and air power for various recirculation arrangements can be effectively expressed as a function of A and the subsystem air quantity. Numerical examples are included.

The paper presents increasing importance of mineral secondary and waste raw materials in the minerals management in Poland. Definition of mineral secondary and waste raw materials is proposed, according to current Polish law. On this basis, sources of various types of mineral waste raw materials are analysed. The special attention is paid to the wastes from mining and processing, wastes from power plants, and wastes from steelworks and other smelters. Other types of waste and secondary materials, such as metallic containers, glass containers, batteries, metallic wastes and scraps, are also taken into account. Analysis of sources of such materials is shown together with the main directions of their economic use. Available sources of information on manufacture and use of the mentioned secondary and waste raw materials are also analysed. Finally, for a wide range of waste materials, their current and expected significance as substitutes for some industrial and construction minerals in Poland is given.

Liquid-solids separation is common to practically all mineral and coal processing as the bulk of beneficiation plants employ water as the major processing vehicle. The growing usage of hydrometallurgy has increased the importance of liquid-solid separation as acidic and basic solutions result in greater amounts of colloidal solids, with their consequent greater difficulty of separation, the economic need for chemical recovery to minimize this operating cost, and the usual necessity of employing more costly construction materials. The three processing steps covered in this section have significant capital costs. Drying, particularly, has an important operating cost because of the obvious need for energy to evaporate the water or solvent. Several common factors influence all three liquid-solid separation steps. Particle Size and Size Distribution. In general, finer particles have slower settling and filtration rates. The specific surface area is increased, which means a lower solids concentration in the thickener underflow and discharged filter cake as well as a grater moisture content to be evaporated in the drying step. Therefore, overgrinding or excessive attrition should be avoided. Consideration should be given to optimum particle size consistent with entire plant operation performance and recovery. Solids Concentration. Increased feed solids concentration will generally minimize required equipment size and costs in all three liquid-solid separation steps. Most thickeners are designed on the basis of unit area required, expressed as square feet per short ton of dry solids per day (square meters per metric ton per day) which will usually decrease with increased feed solids concentration. Filtration rates also increase as the required flow through the capillaries of the filter cake decreases. Dryer capacity increases and less energy per ton of final product is required to evaporate the associated moisture. Particle Shape and Surface Characteristics. Generally, optimum shape is a spherical particle of zero porosity. As either of these factors degrade away from the desired state, difficulty increases. This is particularly true in drying, where porosity can decrease drying rate significantly if the moisture must first reach the particle surface by diffusion

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

This study showed the kinetics of gold chlorination leaching from an anode slime complex containing copper, silver, barium, selenium, and tellurium. AgCl and BaSO4 control the rate of gold leaching, and the interface transfer and diffusion across the product was selected as the desirable kinetic model. The concentration of hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas flow rate, pulp density, and temperature have been precisely studied. The results showed that temperature and hydrochloric acid have a favorable influence on the leaching rate. However, the chlorine gas flow rate is inactive in the reaction rate. Furthermore, the leaching rate decreased with an increasing pulp density. The leaching process was controlled by the interface transfer and diffusion across the product, and the activation energy was determined to be 13.66 kJ mol–1.
