As the 2010 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2010 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 328. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, we accomplish the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly fulfills that pledge. The 2010 Transactions is the first Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely as an e-book. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will certainly better serve the mining community. I am excited about this development and the opportunities it presents. The 2010 Transactions also contain some of the most exciting research from the past year, including new developments in mineral processing, safety and exploration. Be sure not to miss the two Minerals & Metallurgical Processing issues on the subject of gold hydrometallurgy. This 2010 Transactions comprise of a total of 78 technical papers (582 pages including index), including all 21 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2010 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 62) and all 34 papers (231 pages) that were published in 2010 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 27). Addition, this volume contains 23 papers (194 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 78 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2010 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

As the environmental movement gained force during the past few years, it was inevitable that attention would be focused on surface mining, and we have seen this method of extracting minerals from the ground come under heavy attack by conservation groups, the press and television, legislators at all levels of government,, and the public at large. It is difficult, and in some situations, perhaps impossible, to measure either the need for, or the results of, land reclamation in absolute terms. Therefore, much of the criticism of surface mining has been based upon subjective analysis rather than hard data, with the result that discussion of the subject often includes a fair amount of emotional response. To be fair, this reaction is not limited to just our critics; even we hard headed engineers sometimes respond in the same way, an observation with which you may agree when I finish this talk. This leads to the thought that whether you are for it, or against it, land reclamation in many respects is a state of mind. That is, our reaction to it can vary considerably, depending on how far we have thought it through. And think it through we must, because the pressures being brought to bear need to be met with positive actions if the problem is to be brought under control, and in the next few minutes I would like to discuss from a management point of view some ideas which might aid in this thinking process. It would be a mistake, I believe, to think that the current energy crisis will suddenly bring the environmental movement to a stop, and therefore, we can relax and go back to running our busi¬ness the way we used to. In our previous work, a population balance model describing the simultaneous processes of size reduction and mineral liberation has been developed. The experimental verification of this model, however, has been limited to a binary mineral system containing only one composite particle class. When considering multiple classes of composite particles, the estimation of model parameters becomes much more difficult. In the present work, a procedure for estimating model parameters for a multiple composite class model has been developed. Emphasis is placed on the direct experimental determination of these parameters. The physical significance of the breakage rate function and the liberation function in characterizing the liberation process is also discussed.

"Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was built from Two Harbors to the Vermilion range at Tower, a distance of 67.6 miles, in 1884, and extended to Ely, twenty-one miles east of Tower, in 1888. It was built into Duluth in 1886, and branches were extended from its main line to the Mesabi mines in 1892 and 1893. The original grades on this road are very steep, going north, and in the thirteen miles from Two Harbors to Highland there is a rise of 1,150 feet. A new line between these points has been built with an increase of three miles in distance and with maximum grades of 1 per cent. Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway. The Duluth, Mis¬sabe & Northern Railway was constructed from Stony Brook to Mountain Iron, a distance of 48.62 miles, in 1892. The Biwabik branch from Iron Junction to Biwabik, a distance of 15.54 miles, was constructed in 1892. The Superior branch from Wolf to Hibbing, a distance of 16.06 miles, was co11structed in 1893. The Alborn branch from Coleraine Junction to Coleraine, a distance of 53 miles, was constructed in 1906. The total main line mileage is 242 miles, of which 82 miles from Duluth to Hibbing is double tracked"

Chemically, mica is a complex silicate of sodium, potassium and aluminum. There are no important uses of mica where the chemical analysis is important, except that in some uses of ground mica, the content of iron oxide present as an impurity must be kept to a very low limit. Muscovite mica is frequently found containing black and red "stain" as a homogeneous part of the books or sheets. In most cases this stain or impurity is magnetite or hematite. Some mica contains impurities deposited by infiltration. This is commonly a red stain, less often brown or white. The best mica is free from all such impurities, and the greater their content, the less value does the mica have.(1) It is because of these undesirable impurities that a large segment of the fine ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as a source of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and density specifications. One need only to observe the stained and decrepitated condition of the mica recovered from mica schist to appreciate the challenge that processing this material presents. Despite these adversities there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores are considerably higher than the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of forty percent mica. This is a summary of what has happened to the domestic production of two industrial minerals vital to a healthy US economy: fluorspar and barite. A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. FLUORSPAR Some 9% of the fluorspar presently being consumed in the US is imported, whereas the use of fluorspar has not declined proportionately. Several factors can be mentioned.

The problem of predicting the liberation spectra produced by a closed continuous grinding circuit is of fundamental importance for the design, optimization and control of most operations in an ore dressing plant. The only known approach through which such a calculation can be performed is the population balance model equation. The latest and certainly most significant progress made in this area is the solution proposed by King (1990), which requires one textural parameter that can be measured directly from the ore being studied. The main advantage of King's solution is that it does not require the estimation of hundreds of arbitrary parameters that cannot be independently measured, as required by the existing conventional solutions. However, King's solution relies heavily on a knowledge of the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Milm diagram (Andrews and Mika, 1975). This has never been measured for any ore. The characterization of the internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram requires the measurement of the liberation spectra at several progeny sizes produced by the breakage of monosize, monograde particles at several different grades. In this paper, a procedure based on magnetic fluid fractionation for generating seven narrow-size, narrow-grade samples is presented. Each of these samples was then broken into six progeny size classes in an ultrasonic mill. The one-dimensional liberation spectra of each of the 42 progeny and seven parent particle samples were then measured by image analysis. The measured linear-grade distributions are presented in this paper. The calculation of the correspondent volumetric-grade distributions is discussed.

It was not many years ago that people would have argued that a coal session did not belong at an International Mining Convention. Historically, steam coal has always been used domestically due to its natural geographic diversity and high transportation expense. Times have changed. With the help of Opec, steam coal has gone international. As opposed to metallurgical coal, whose trade routes have a long history, whose supply sources are more limited and whose market growth is seen by most to be relatively flat, steam coal export forecasts are calling for more than a doubling by 1990 and a quadrupling by the year 2000. Suddenly, one must be familiar with coal mining on a global basis in order to predict which regions will be able to fill these markets.

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. In mid 1978 Inland Cement Industries Ltd. brought on-line their new one million megagram (Mg) per year cement plant at Tilbury Island, Delta, British Columbia. The Plant--Its Philosophy of Design The design of this plant began in 1974, at the beginning of the rapid rise in petroleum costs later referred to as the "energy crisis". The trend in fuel costs was clear, so one of the basic criteria for the selection of process equipment was high thermal efficiency. Throughout the process of selection of materials handling and process equipment, energy consumption was a factor in decisions. A second factor which influenced the design of the plant was its location on navigable water. The plant is designed to make maximum use of this means of transport to minimize transportation costs. All raw materials (and some fuel) are received by water, and a major portion of the cement and clinker is sent out by barge. Extensive modern dock and material handling facilities were provided to accomplish the shipping and receiving functions. A plant meeting stringent environmental regulations was the third major factor which formed the basis for design. To meet this requirement, all storage facilities had to be covered, 53 bag type dust collectors were applied throughout the plant, and materials handling equipment was designed to minimize dust and spillage.

Shotcrete has been used for approximately 20 years to facilitate tunnel excavation through poor ground. Early examples of such usage in North America include the recuperation of the Granduc Mines access tunnel in Northern British Columbia, and similar work performed in the Carley V. Porter and Big Walker Tunnels in the United States. Mining companies such as Craigmont Mines in B.C. and Hecla Mines have used shotcrete in their workings for the past ten years. Shotcrete is now a widely utilized fool in the mining and tunnel construction industries in North America, but the accumulated experience is too limited for many to fully appreciate the capability of shotcrete to control ground movements and to understand the limitations of this tool. It is common, for instance, to use shotcrete to "bridge the gap" between rock bolt-supported and steel-rib supported ground and to avoid the use of shotcrete in water-bearing ground. Shotcrete can, and has been, used economically and practically under most severe ground conditions.

Tile Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory is a member of the Engineering Research Department of North Carolina State University. The Laboratory is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. A few out of state projects are handled at times. The Laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar, spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and maintains versatile batch and pilot plant facilities at Asheville. It is of interest that North Carolina has now one of the newest and largest flotation plants at Lee Creek where Texas Gulf Sulphur Company produces 10,000 tons of phosphate concentrate per day, and one of the smallest flotation plants at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company's fiberglass plant in Shelby, North Carolina where $50,000 per year of platinum-rhodium metal is reclaimed from wasted fiberglass furnace refractories in a tiny flotation operation of pilot plant size. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the Laboratory's projects. This work has been extremely interesting and rewarding in many instances. Or, the example of projects for Kings Mountain Mica Company it will be demonstrated how waste could be reduced step by step from 20 tons of waste per ton of product to LO tons of product per ton of waste by improved processing methods. Brick, high grade potash feldspar, and silica sand are now produced from formerly wasted materials. AL this time Laboratory work sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to reclaim saleable mineral products such as feldspar, mica quartz, and to make more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications. Processes to produce new products such as sand-lime brick, and lightweight foamed autoclaved calcium silicate building products will be tested.

A principal first order and a minor summation term contribute to the solution of the discretized batch grinding equation when formulated in cumulative retained mode. Depending on the interrelationships between the selection and breakage parameters, the minor term may be advantageously modified in a number of ways. The reduced grinding equations thus obtained are solved by iterations to give relatively simple solutions which are tested against experimental data. The implications and advantages of the reduced grinding equations are briefly discussed.

The emergence of residuals management as a planning and management tool in the mineral industry has been recently accelerated by the proliferation of environmental regulation and its associated costs. Residuals management practices allow for the early determination and integration of both production and environmental goals in the development of management strategies to arrive at the most cost effective, environ- mentally sound solution. The term residuals management was in actuality derived from the substitution of the word residual for the term ?pollutant? or ?waste?. A residual can be defined as a non-product output having no value in existing markets or a value less than the cost of marketing it. The values of the residual can be determined by time, technology, government policy, market conditions, etc. Residuals basically fit into two classes -- materials which are composed of liquid, gaseous or solids; and, energy, which mainly consists of heat and noise. These residuals are interrelated and can be modified by adding materials and/ or energy, which also may become a residual; thus, lending themselves to alternate disposal schemes to control the adverse effects.

The Basalt Waste Isolation Project of the U.S. Department of Energy is a part of the National Was re Terminal Storage Program. Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.

In 1980, a caravan of representatives of Japanese trading companies debarked on the shores of the United States bearing gifts of watches, electronic games, and radios. In early 1983, we find in a parking lot of a major U.S. coal company, a haggard general manager of marketing returning to the Orient with a box under his arm of trinkets of his own; cross pens with company logos, alarm clocks, etc. The tables have turned, but our fellow sitting in a jet plane over the Pacific Ocean had only to heed the warning of the famous 19th Century poet well familiar with the ways of the Far East. Kipling said; "And the End of the Fight is a tombstone white and with the name of the late deceased, And the epitaph drear, a fool lies here who tried to hustle the East."

The potential for the utilization solar energy for the production of industrial process steer in mineral processing industries is discussed briefly. To advance the technical and economic feasibility of solar-thermal systems applications, U.S. Department of Energy has funded several projects. NL industries of Newberry Springs, California is one among them and has been chosen as a case study. The NL Industries solar system consists of 950 square meters of Del, single-axis, tracking, parabolic-trough, concentrating collectors. It was designee to produce a portion of the 420°. 530°k. steam utilized in a trying operation reduce the moisture content of hectorite ore from 10 percent to 4 percent. (Hectorite is an hydrous magnesium silicate which, when refined, is of significant commercial interest because of its applications in various chemical and food processes.) is estimated that implementation or this solar system could result an annual savings of 3.545 billion KJ ,3.360 billion BTUs), or the equivalent of 90 cubic meters (600 barrels) of oil and a net reduction of 1,860 kilograms (4100 pounds) of air pollutants annually. The technical, economic and institutional issues encountered in the course of this project are also discussed. Finally, the impact of the commercialization of solar energy applications in mineral processing industries is evaluated.

The impact of surface coal mining on the geologic materials and ground water in different geologic settings is being investigated by the Illinois State. Geological Survey at three abandoned surface mines in Illinois. At a site near Ottawa in La Salle County, the overburden prior to mining consisted largely of pyritic shale; sand was the major component of the overburden and spoil at a mine near Coal City, Grundy County. Clays, lacustrine silts, and some shale and limestone were the dominant premining overburden materials at a mine near Harrisburg, in Saline County. Ground-water elevations at Coal City and Harrisburg are approximately at premining levels, whereas at Ottawa they are near the base of the spoil. Ground-water quality has deteriorated at all three sites, especially at Ottawa and Harrisburg.
