The Ozarks has been called "a diamond in the rough". In this region streams have steep gradients, sparkling clear flows of cold water fed by many springs, and a wildness that is almost unique in the central part of the United States today. The Current River and its tributary, Jacks Fork, have been set aside for preservation by the National Park Service as a "Wild River" in the first park of its kind in the country. It is called the Ozark National Scenic Riverway. Similarly, responsibility for the preservation of the Eleven Point River has been assigned to the U. S. Forest Service. Protection of other streams in the Ozarks has been considered by State agencies. The hydrologic system of the Ozarks is a complex network of gaining and losing streams, caves, conduits, and large springs. Increased sewage loads derived from the growing towns and expanding tourist trade are a potential hazard; effluents may flow underground for long distances, polluting springs and wells. To add another dimension to the hydrologic picture a new lead industry is also flourishing in the Ozarks. Although the history of lead mining in the area goes back to 1701 (U. S. G. S., p. 43), the area has not seen a revitalization like the one that has been developing in the last 10 years; and the economic growth promises to continue indefinitely. Although this brings capital expenditures and wages into the area, it also brings potential hydrologic problems. Chemicals, wastes and other substances either stored on the surface or transported across it are subject to accidental spillage. In an area where these substances remain on the surface their effects are subject to surveillance. In the Ozarks, however, this may not be possible.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

The operation of large opencast mines in a densely populated area in the centre of Europe involves an inevitable interference in the region. Thus, this is only possible with general acceptance by the regional stakeholders. In order to achieve this general acceptance, it is necessary to develop sound common concepts and to engage in a continuous dialogue with the stakeholders. The aim is to create seminal structures of relevance to the regional economy, taking into account the interests of the various stakeholders like e.g. authorities, local governments, the regional public, and churches. The recultivation of the mined-out areas represents the offset for the mining activities. RWE Power has reached high acceptance of its recultivation. This high acceptance is illustrated by various examples, from biotopes to high-yield agriculture and recreational areas. Thus, recultivation covers all the elements of sustainable development from social compatibility to ecological as well as economic aspects. This is only achievable through an intensive stakeholder dialogue in the region: The communities concerned are intensively involved in the planning and approval process for the new landscape. As far as social compatibility - one of the aspects of sustainable development - is concerned, the necessary resettlement of whole villages is one of the principal challenges. Over the last few decades, RWE Power has developed an approach that is broadly recognised by the stake-holders in the region. The best proof for this is the high proportion of resettlees taking part in the joint resettlement scheme offered. This can only be achieved by constant involvement of the stakeholders in the resettlement process. In conclusion, it can be stated that RWE Power has implemented a well-functioning stakeholder dialogue that guarantees the general acceptance necessary for mining operations.

A wide variety of subsidence prediction methods exist. They can be classified into empirical methods and mechanistic models. The empirical methods include profile functions and influence functions (Brzuner, 1973a,b; Kratzsch, 1974; Berry, 1978; Hood et al., 1981), the two empirical approaches of most practical value, if only be- cause they are readily programmed on calculators or computers. The profile functions have the advantage that they allow for ready determination of the necessary empirical parameters from field observations. They have the disadvantage of being restricted to subsidence calculations at a very limited number of points or lines above very simple (rectangular) mine geometries. This reduces greatly their practical applicability for damage predictions, which usually require estimates of strains, slopes or curvatures at structures that have arbitrary position and orientation with respect to planned mine excavations. Influence functions can be used to calculate subsidence at any point near an excavation of any in- seam outline. The main difficulty associated with empirical influence functions is the lack of uniqueness in the relation between subsidence and its cause, the convergence distribution over a mined excavation and its immediate surroundings. A secondary practical difficulty is the need for fairly arbitrary adjustments near the excavation edges, usually in the form of compensation zones (e.g. Brsuner, 1973; Hood et al., 1981). Determination of the appropriate empirical constants in influence functions is facilitated greatly when a direct mathematical connection exists between influence and profile function (several examples are given by Brauner, 1973 and by Hood et al., 1981), so that field data can be used to determine the parameters through backfitting of the profile functions, which is considerably simpler and more direct than backfitting of influence functions.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

"Underground construction poses certain challenges for all parties involved because the actual ground conditions are often unpredictable. Highly complex projects like tunnel construction are affected by various uncertainties. To address this complexity, the construction contract has to be flexible enough to be adapted to the actual conditions (e.g. divergent ground conditions, work delays). However, the adaptation of a tunnel construction contract does not guarantee the absence of a margin of interpretation. The perfect construction contract is an illusion because ex ante statements of the actual ground conditions are not feasible. This paper will discuss contractual parameters that must be considered in order to enable an effective adaptation of the contract during excavation. It is therefore necessary to discuss the following topics: decision-making competence, variable remuneration, fair-risk allocation, value engineering and partnering between client and contractor. INTRODUCTION Thinking of tunnel construction processes, engineers’ first (or at least second) association is about ground conditions. When constructing under the surface, the project is directly related to the ground conditions; however, ground conditions are known fairly well in advance. The estimated conditions can be the same or can also differ from the existing ones. A clear view of the conditions is possible only by driving through the section. What Hoek calls “Geological unpredictability which is guaranteed to provide some surprises in even the simplest tunnelling job” is, in addition to contractual issues, one of two critical aspects of modern tunneling (Hoek 1982). Almost no research tries to figure out, what flexibility in this context means and how to approach it in the contracts. Papers dealing with the New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) pose some principles to meet the requests for flexibility (cf. Austrian Society for Geomechanics 2011). However, it remains unclear how to create contracts in order to make them “flexible” enough to react to divergent ground conditions."

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a byproduct from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations, and this represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita Mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process. Copper heap leaching dissolves more than just copper from the copper ore. Several metals can be identified in leach solutions at concentrations of financial interest, rhenium in particular. Rhenium spot prices ranged from a yearly average of $1,070/kg ($483/lb) in 2005 (Magyar, 2008) to $10,400/kg ($4,706/lb) in 2008 (Polyak, 2013). The spot price in September 2013 was approximately $3,000/kg ($1,357/lb) of rhenium (Metal Bulletin, 2013). Several facilities at Freeport-McMoRan have very low rhenium concentrations in their copper leach solutions, ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/L. The large quantity of solution available, if coupled with an attractive rhenium price, means that the rhenium contained in leach solutions may represent a significant value if a method of extraction could be developed. Testing has confirmed that rhenium adsorbs onto activated carbon much more selectively than other metals in the pregnant leach solution (PLS). A 100-gpm pilot plant was constructed to verify the lab-scale results on a larger basis and establish operating parameters for a full-scale operation. This report summarizes the initial technology development and pilot plant operation.

"The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. Cyanide determined by silver nitrate titration is commonly referred to as “free” cyanide, but frequently should be referred to as “titratable” cyanide. Titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide when metal-cyanide complex concentrations (e.g., cadmium, copper, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc) in solution are low. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O'Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

A common result of Environmental Impact Assessments associated with mining projects is the construction of new wetlands in areas disturbed by mining operations. Where appropriate, this mitigation may be considered an integral part of the mine reclamation process under the principles of sustainable development in the minerals industry. Wetbud is a new tool for estimating wetland water budgets using available weather data and site-specific topographic, soil and geohydrologic data, coupled with mass balance mathematics. Wetbud is primarily intended as a planning tool for use in the design of created wetlands, but it can also be applied to native wetlands or wetland restoration sites where the required input parameters can be specified. Wetbud can be run in its basic form where wetland topography, soil parameters and groundwater flux are simplified, or in the advanced form, where these parameters are included in a more complex approach via integration of the MODFLOW package, a free 3D program that was developed by the United States Geological Survey. Both versions can also include overbank flow hydrology sources and the advanced form can also model sloping and irregular topography. The program downloads weather data from the nearest applicable station and selects appropriate wet-normal-dry (W-N-D) years following a modest user data clean-up step. Wetbud also has the ability to utilize existing short-term (e.g. 6 to 9 months) groundwater data from an up-gradient well to simulate longer-term groundwater level inputs for the selected W-N-D years. In addition, Wetbud features a “Wizard” version that comes pre-loaded with 14 pre-selected weather data sets for all areas of Virginia that can develop a simple monthly water budget in less than 15 minutes – a feature that could be expanded anywhere geographically with historic weather data.

At the 2017 ICGCM-conference in Morgantown, WV, a case study was presented with measurements of the upward surface movements or uplift after the closure of two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). One was closed in the sixties, and the other closed in 1988. The study was based on satellite data (Radar-interferometry or InSAR). The analyses showed both a significant variation of uplift values above the mined area and the surrounding zones, and a variation of the uplift rate as a function of time. In other words, the phenomenon of uplift is complex. At that time, it also was clear that more research was needed to better understand this phenomenon, e.g., an identification of the various mechanisms that are relevant for the process of uplift and the quantification of the various impacts. A systematic analysis of all relevant parameters resulted in a framework that forms the basis for the analytical calculations of uplift values. These calculations show that the main impact is due to changes in the hydrostatic pressure. However, the expansion of the softest parts, i.e., the collapsed or goaf material, is not only important, but the expansion of the (stiffer) non-collapsed strata layers due to a change in pore pressure also must be integrated into the model. For the case study, the partial flooding of the underground after closure of the mine that was abandoned in the sixties is integrated into the model. Larger stiffness values also are applied for this mine, in comparison to the values of the more recently closed mine. Overall, a very good correlation is observed between the InSAR-measurements and the calculated values along a north-south transect.

Factors that have influenced mineralization in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont provinces in Alabama are not clearly understood. Lithology and structure are recognizable factors in the Valley and Ridge province, where barite, lead, and zinc sulfides occur in structurally complex areas of Cambrian and Ordiovician carbonate rocks. Metal mineralization in the Piedmont province indicates a complex relationship with factors such as favorable host rock, proximity to intrusive or high-grade metamorphic rocks, several metamorphic events and separate or related structural events. Lineaments, as used herein, refer to naturally occurring linear features consisting of topographic, vegetative or soil tonal alignments that are at least partially continuous for distances greater than a mile (Lattman, 1958). Lineaments in Alabama were first recognized by J. G. Newton in 1970, using Apollo 9 series photographs. Subsequent studies delineated the features (Powell and others, 1970) and suggested relationships to structural and hydrologic factors. More recent work has explored relationships to mineralization, environmental geology and the tectonic framework of the Appalachians (Drahovzal and Copeland, 1970; Drahovzal and Neathery, in press). The lineaments recognizable on Apollo 9 photography probably represent fractures, some of which may reflect geofractures that bound major basement blocks. The lineaments defined in Alabama range from about 4 miles to nearly 200 miles in length. Most of the lineaments are straight, but some are arcuate; some appear to terminate at the intersections with other lineaments but most cross each other with no offset. Some lineaments pass through areas of structural disruption such as terminations, offsets and changes in structural style, but others show no such relationships. "The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified. The relation between the effect of immediate ring closure and earth cover has been clarified (Mashimo et al., 2008; Awaji et al., 2013),"

Today there are numerous electronic rotating vane and thermal (hot-wire) anemometers, as well as vortex meters available to measure air velocity. Of these, a laboratory and field evaluation has found that certain instruments are better suited to routine airflow measurements in mine roadways and ventilation ducts. This paper concludes a study sponsored by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada, that was introduced at the 5th U.S. Symposium. The study investigated the suitability of currently available electronic anemometers as replacements for the traditional mechanical analog devices while maintaining standard methods such as the continuous traverse. Six electronic instruments were subjected to extensive tests under controlled conditions both in a wind-tunnel and in the field at an underground mine. The evaluation concluded that ergonomics and design were major considerations in unit preference as most of the instruments had very similar performance characteristics. Specific findings were: a) In the wind-tunnel the vane anemometers, especially the "micro" vanes, were more susceptible to misalignment or yaw effects but these were not noticeable in the field; b) Both the vortex and hot-wire anemometers were suitable for continuous traverses of mine roadways; c) Traversing ventilation ducts was more practical than a Pitot-tube multi-point assessments or discharge measurements; d) Yaw is a major concern in duct measurements; e) The continuous traversing method for roadways overestimates the average air velocity; f) Hot-wire anemometers can require significant air density corrections; and g) Hot-wire anemometers are better suited than rotating vanes to mine roadways of less than 1 m/s average air velocity. Based on research detailed in this paper, the ventilation engineer should be able to match the mine's requirements with the presented instrument performance characteristics, thereby optimizing the purchase of a new anemometer and the efficiency with which air velocities are measured.

Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

In vertical airways, falling material - solids-or water - may cause undesirable disturbances in the ventilation in the airway itself and also in neig¬bouring airways unless precautions are taken to stabilize the air flow. Such cases can occur, for example, - in shaft sinking by drilling from a pilot hole, - during the filling up of shafts, and - during the introduction of water into shafts in the case of mine fires. In an airway with upward ventilation the falling material will reduce the air flow and may even re¬verse its direction. In an airway with downward ventilation the air flow can only increase, but a reversal of the direction of ventilation may result in a parallel airway. These disturbances in the normal ventilation are undesirable as it must be the aim to have ventilation that is stable in quantity and direction throughout a mine. In order to be able to prepare suitable stabilization measures one must know the pressure generated by the falling material; this pressure will henceforth be called "aeromotive" pressure. The main factors determining the influence of falling material on the ventilation are - the amount of falling material and its height of fall, - the cross sectional area of the airway, - the pressure. difference prevailing in it, - the-position of the. airway in the ventilation. network, - the air velocity, and - other parameters, e. g. the density and grain size of the falling material. To determine the aeromotive pressure-measurements have been made underground during the sinking and filling of shafts and systematic studies have been carried out during the supply of water into a staple shaft. The present paper deals first with some fundamental theoretical considerations and then describes the measuring arrangements and the results of the series of experiments that have been carried out.

The installation of equipment and structures at mines often requires the evaluation of unique loading and operating conditions. Consideration of these unusual features is required throughout design and construction and into operation. The necessity for employing sound civil, structural and mechanical engineering techniques to the design of structures and equipment is well understood. However, the influence of geotechnical factors on the overall behavior during construction and operation of these facilities is less appreciated. Mine operators routinely perform exploratory drilling for the purposes of defining ore deposits. These exploration activities can be extensive and often include provisions for assessment of subsurface conditions as they relate to the mining operation, i.e., requirements for ground support. All of these factors are important to the economics of the mine and are well justified. Surface facilities are provided to access and service the mine and they play an important role in the successful development and operation of a project. Headframes, hoist foundations and shaft collars, in particular, are examples of unique installations encountered at underground mine sites. The design and above surface behavior of these facilities can be analyzed with the usual fundamental engineering practices employed throughout the engineering professions. This requirement during the project development is understood and adopted. Unfortunately, near surface exploration for the purposes of assessing soil and rock conditions for foundations are often given a reduced priority and less consideration. This paper is aimed at providing an outline into the benefits and importance of performing such explorations and to provide a brief discussion of the merits of such an approach. References in the paper relate particularly to shaft headframes, hoists and shaft collars but the issues raised apply equally well to other installations of a similar nature, e.g. milling equipment.
