The solutions used in the heap biooxidative treatment of sulfidic refractory Au ores and concentrates generally load free mineral acid and metals and, in time, become bacteria activity inhibiting due to increased acid and/or metals concentrations. The metals­acid loaded, bacteria action inhibiting, solution must then be: (a) processed, prior to re-use, to reduce its metals and/or free acid mineral acid components to bacteria activity compatible levels; or (b) neutralized prior to discharge. The most common solution processing method to adjust acid-metals contents is liming to effect the precipitation of dissolved metals and neutralization of acid sufficient for solution discharge or re-use. The lime treated solution is high in suspended, colloidal precipitates and requires clarification before reuse. Most often the "bleedstream" of biooxidation solution that is lime treated is discharged and req­uisite volumes of fresh water added to the process inventory. Depending on the level of bacterial action in a heap and the acid consumption characteristics of the ore/concentrate being biooxi­dized, the bleedstream taken from the circulating, irrigation on­off, solution, can be large (e.g., 10%-20% and sometimes as much as 50% of the daily solution flow requires treatment-dis­charge). The lime charge for bleedstream treatment is commen­surately large and represents a major operating cost of the bioox­idation process. The patented HW Process Technologies (HWPT) Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS™) method is an alternative biooxi­dation bleedstream treatment method. EMS™ processing removes the multivalent base metals ions in an acid solution to a small volume EMS™ "concentrate" (typically 25% of the feed­stream volume). The EMS™ method coincidentally makes a "clean acid" EMS™ "permeate" (typically 75% of the feed­stream volume). In general, EMSTM processing enables 75% of the bleedstream volume to be recycled; allows up to 2/3 of the bleedstream acid to be recovered as a 10% solution; and delivers dissolved metals in a highly concentrated stream suited to a. metals recovery or b. reduced cost lime neutralization for a given metals precip­itation relative to full bleedstream neutralization (typically a 30% lime use savings). Implicit in the recovery of process water for re-use and reduced reagent addition requirement for metals precipitation is a significant reduction in wastewater-sludge dis­posal facility size.

The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

The spent catalyst is one of solid waste resources, which contains precious metals with considerable recovery value. However, due to the different compositions of catalyst, the recovery process is difficult. Most of the catalysts are supported by alumina which has good alkali-soluble properties, while platinum is insoluble in alkali. Platinum is enriched by pressurized alkaline solution which is a kind of hydrometallurgical process. The novelty of this study is the separation of alumina and platinum from the spent catalyst and the enrichment of platinum in the solid phase. In this study, a leaching process using NaOH as leaching agent under high temperature and pressure was employed. The effects of alkali concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time, and liquid–solid ratio on leaching efficiency were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined as follows: alkali concentration of 240 g/L, temperature of 200℃, pressure of 1.20 MPa, time of 1 h, liquid–solid ratio of 5:1. It was concluded that the leaching rate of alumina can reach 99.69%. The content of platinum increased from 0.1749 to 21.12%, the loss of platinum was 3.39%, and the enrichment ratio of platinum increased by 120.82 times. The leaching kinetics of alumina was studied based on the shrinkage core model. The activation energy of alumina leaching is 19.53 kJ/mol, and the leaching process is controlled by chemical reaction. Pressurized alkali solution can not only efficiently leachate alumina from the spent catalyst and enrich platinum, but also reduce the reaction time and increase reaction rate.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. The mining industry needs to assure compliance with the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). Congress has enacted this legislation with the intent of preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution of the nation' s surface and groundwaters. Recognized sources of pollution such as seepage from tailings ponds, waste dumps, and contaminated effluent from mine dewatering operations pose a serious threat to adjacent groundwaters. In addition, technological innovations being implemented by the industry such as in situ leaching of low grade ore deposits may also lead to ground- water contamination. An adequate monitoring methodology designed to meet the needs of the mining industry is needed. Monitoring and control methodology devised for other man- caused sources of ground- water pollution - e. g., landfills - offer considerable promise for adaptation to the problem. The prediction of deleterious effects on groundwater quality usually requires extensive geohydrological data in addition to a thorough analysis of the mining activity that is underway or projected. If the avail- able data are adequate, mathematical models of surface and groundwater flow can be constructed that will help to predict effects on water quality. Data are inadequate to allow a realistic interpretation of pollution potentials. These data can be supplemented by computer simulation as a method to explore a number of possible environmental effects and also to develop a minimum-cost approach to identifying and gathering the additional necessary supporting data. Incorrect assessment of the important environmental considerations may, in many instances, prove to be the weakest link in analyzing the financial feasibility of a mining operation.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

While respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust that arises in industrial production mostly emanates from point sources and can be well mitigated, the extraction of dust is much more difficult in underground construction, since locally generated dust spreads widely. Analysis of dust measurements shows that RCS values are difficult to predict, and effective dedusting systems are required to comply with permissible exposure limits (PEL) in breathed air. Dedusting systems are effective near the tunnel face, while dedusting of working areas away from the tunnel face is difficult or even impossible. In general, there is little temporal influence on the tunnelling work—except for drill and blast excavation—which makes it necessary to remove the deduster and ductwork from the face area. Concurrent work in the tunnel is affected by the backflowing air mass of ventilation and therefore the quality of this air mass must be considered. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE), e.g., dust filter masks, is considered the least-desirable safety measure available. However, for certain individual operations in the tunnelling process, the use of PPE cannot be avoided, especially if other technical mitigation measures are not possible. In tunnels with small cross sections for example, dedusting systems often cannot be accommodated and PPE must be used instead. This raises the question of whether the use of PPE can be avoided by designing appropriate excavation cross sections and allowing for the implementation of technically engineered mitigation measures. The paper highlights problems with dedusting measures and shows possible ways to achieve OSHA compliance.

Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Ventilation of tunnels in mines assumes ever. greater importance today because of increased mechanization and concentration of output which leads to higher rate of production of inflammable gases and respirable dust. In a 1985 seminar, we were told that overoptimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that A1 is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity.(e.g: machine or program) to be intelligent. According to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way. The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and software along with new insights into the ways in which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation of intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confined by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.

Industrial wastes nowadays constitute one of the most serious threats for the future of our planet. Researchers around the world have very often proposed many kind of solutions in the management problem of industrial effluents. However in most cases suggested solutions are either too expensive to be applied in industrial scale, or they just transfer the problem (e.g. precipitation creates dangerous sludge) and so they create an even greater problem and threat. In the present study the exploitation of valuable hydraulic and adsorption properties of fly ash is studied. Fly ash can easily and cheaply be shaped into stable pellets. After ageing for a sort period of time, these structures can be used as adsorbents for the removal of heavy metals from industrial effluents. Experiments in aqueous solutions have shown excellent adsorption behavior concerning the removal of cadmium, copper, lead, chromium (III) and zinc. The advantage of this technology, except low cost, is that after saturation the pellets can be easily removed from the liquid phase and stabilized in concrete structures without any problem of desorption or leaching. Moreover in these structures a significant amount of cement in the concrete can be replaced by raw fly ash. (Ashcrete as it is called). The utilization of an industrial byproduct as fly ash in the form of pellets as adsorption means and their stabilization with concrete (or ashcrete) combines the useful properties of a solid waste in the treatment of liquid effluents and constitutes a green low cost technology.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

It is difficult to fail if one has a great deposit, but 'great' ore deposits are few and far between. More often one hears that a mine has been 'made' rather than found. This is particularly true for industrial minerals and for gold and silver projects. Even the best ore deposit can often be improved through innovative technology, e.g. the Escondida copper mine in Chile, where a novel ammonia leaching process is yielding a fabulous DCFROI. Consider the case of a small high grade gold mine. Previous owners had found inadequate reserves to justify the capital cost of developing the mine and installing a mill. Lower grade resources had been ignored because the owners were looking only for grades that would be high enough to support a small underground mine and mill. Randol, assisted by Kappes Cassiday & Associates, determined that the ore was amenable for heap leaching. Secondly, existing drillhole data indicated a significant lower grade resource that appears to be accessible to open pit mining methods. In this case, the appropriate selection of off-the­shelf technologies has literally 'made' the mine. At the Randol at Vancouver '94 conference on Latin American Mining Opportunities, papers on innovative technolo­gies for exploration, mining, metallurgy and environmental management were presented in non-technical terms for managers and resource developers. It was surprising how few of the exploration- and finance-oriented delegates participated in these sessions. Numerous technologies were presented that could be added to one's arsenal of tricks to 'make' a mine, i.e. to convert resources into ore reserves through knowledge.

10.1 I~RODUC1'ION In order to understand the effects of surface subsidence due to underground mining on the ground water hydrology, a brief introduction to the rate, direction, and general pattern of ground water movement in aquifers is necessary. Ground water movement in an aquifer is controlled by aquifer lithology, structure, permeability, water levels, topographic set¬ting, and pumping patterns (Sgambat et al., 1980). Fig. 10.1 shows an idealized flow pattern of ground water in a hilly terrain (Coe and Stowe, 1984). The hill is made up of a series of interbedded permeable aquifers (mostly sandstone) and confining units (mostly shale). Since sandstone is porous and permeable, ground water moves through it downward and laterally until it reaches the interbeddings of the confining unit immediately below. The ground water then moves laterally along the interbeddings, be¬cause the confining unit is less permeable, and comes out as springs on the surface at the intersection of the aquifer and the confining unit. If there is a ground water table in each aquifer, it is a perched water table (e.g., right side of Fig 10.1). On the other hand, if the ground water recharge is larger than can be drained out, the interbedded permeable aquifers and confining units will be filled with water and a ground water table will exist only at the uppermost permeable aquifer. This is the semi-perched water table (e.g., left side of Fig. 10.1). There are three ground water flow systems: shallow, interme¬diate, and deep. Shallow flow systems occur near the land surface and the surface drainage system. The flow depth ranges from a few to several hundreds of feet with a resident time of a few weeks to a few years after entry, depending on the permeability of the rock strata. In a shallow flow system, the drainage coincides with sur¬face run-off water divides. Intermediate flow systems occur in minor hills some distance away from surface drainage. The travel distance ranges from several hundreds to several thousands of feet, the travel time from several months to tens of years. These systems are less dependent on seasonal recharge or discharge. In deep flow systems, the ground water travels from thousands of feet to miles, and transfers between surface basins. The travel time ranges from several tens to several hundreds of years. The systems generally receive recharge over a large area on major mountains and dis¬charge into major stream systems. 10.2 CASE STUDIES There are two ways of monitoring water wells for studying the effects of dewatering due to underground mining, i.e., water level and piezometric level. The water level is the water elevation in a water well that has penetrated two or more aquifers. Thus it indi¬cates the combined flow of all the aquifers that the water well intersects during the time of measurement. The piezometric level is the level to which water rises in a piezometer cased to a specific aquifer, and coincides with the pressure level of water in that aquifer. Therefore piezometric level reflects the water condition in that particular aquifer to which it is confined, while the water level represents the total yield of a water well without regard to the source of water. For instance, if a water well intersects two aqui¬fers, and if the lower aquifer is affected by undermining and goes dry while the upper aquifer does not, the water level in the well will drop, but may never go dry. Under this condition, the data obtained by monitoring the water level do not indicate the true behavior of the individual aquifers, especially if they are located at widely separated heights. 10.2.1 WATER LEVEL EFFECTS The effects of underground mining on ground water flow have been the subject of many investigations (Booth, 1984; Coe and Stowe, 1984; Owili-Eger, 1983; Rauch et al., 1984). However, the problems are very complicated, as have been exemplified by the conflicting conclusions reached by various investigators in var¬ious case studies. The most dramatic examples were described by Coe and Stowe (1984). In the first case (Fig. 10.2), the coal seam was 5 ft thick with cover from 400 to 800 ft deep. The majority of water supplies came from a sandstone aquifer in most ridge tops. When the face of the Panel No. 3 passed under it, dug well WW-1, which was approximately 670 ft above the coal, went dry, while the water level in Borehole B- 1, which was located at the center of Panel No. 4 with the bottom reaching the coal seam, also dropped about 160 ft. In Panel No. 5, the developed spring DS-2, which originated from the surface of the sandstone/shale contact and was approximately 750 ft above the coal seam, stopped when the face passed under it. The water level in the dug well W-2, which was dug into the shale about 700 ft above the coal seam dropped about 22 ft, but the well did not go dry. Therefore, nearly every spring or well located above or near the active panels was affected by longwall mining. In the second mine (Fig. 10.3), the seam was 5 ft thick with cover from 200 to 400 ft thick. Dug well DW-2, the bottom of which was 35 ft deep and approximately 330 ft above the coal seam in a perched sandstone aquifer, went dry right after the longwall passed under it. Drilled well W-3, in the sandstone aquifer, about 220 ft above the coal seam, experienced a 75-ft drop in water level when the face was under it, but showed some re¬covery after the face had passed under it. Ponds P- I and P-2 were developed in shale bedrock and were spring fed. They were not affected by longwall mining. Pond P-3 was developed in the sand¬stone aquifer, and its water table showed some decline when the face passed under it. Spring ST-1, which originated from Pond P-1 and was fed from several tributary valleys, was affected by longwall mining, probably because it passed across the panel edges where tension cracks drained off the water. Although the overbur¬den in case 2 was about half of that in case 1, the majority of water resources were not affected by longwall mining. Coe and Stowe (1984) attributed this discrepancy to: (1) a higher percentage of clays, shales, and claystones, resulting in a lesser degree of inter¬connected fracturing, and (2) a less rugged topography resulting in a less localized ground water flow system. Therefore, in order to assess the effects of underground mining, the premining ground water flow patterns, topographical, lithological, and meterological conditions must be known. Booth (1984) also monitored the ground water effects of a longwall mine (Fig. 10.4) in a seam 5 ft thick and 300 to 800 ft deep. There were three major aquifers: Morgantown sandstone approximately 30 ft thick and 630 ft above the coal; Saltsburg sandstone of up to 50 ft in thickness and 520 ft above the coal; and

Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2•H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can be treated further with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. This study focuses on metamodeling of a simulated flowsheet with design of experiments (DOE). Based on literature survey, a process flowsheet was developed using HSC Sim software. The created flowsheet focuses on circulation of solution containing Na+, K+, SO42- ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH treatment of double salt precipitate. The effect of seven parameters (P1-P7) on seven responses (R1-R7) were modeled using central composite design (CCD). INTRODUCTION Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery waste can be considered as an urban mineral due to the presence of valuable metals like: Ni, Co and rare earth elements (REE) (Larsson et al., 2013). In NiMH battery waste leaching experiments, sulfuric acid has often been employed as a lixiviant (Pietrelli et al., 2002,Zhang et al., 1999,Rodrigues and Mansur, 2010,Porvali et al., 2018). The key advantages of sulfuric acid are its stability and cost-effectiveness compared to other mineral acids such as HCl and HNO3. However, the usage of sulfuric acid in NiMH battery waste leaching poses simultaneous challenges and advantages. Limited REE solubility can be taken as benefit when recovering REEs double sulfates after solid-liquid separation. However, sodium and potassium hydroxide, present in electrolyte residues in the battery waste, can cause in-situ precipitation already during leaching due to limited solubility, thus decreasing the total REE recovery (Porvali et al., 2018). However, this problem can be circumvented by washing the electrolyte residues off the raw materials. Subsequently, the REEs may be precipitated in bulk as a mixed double salt out from the solution at very low pH with minimal co-precipitation of Ni and other metals. This relatively easy separation method can be extremely advantageous in the case of such a complex solution matrix with relatively high REE concentrations (conc.). Once REEs have been precipitated as double sulfates as per eq. (1) (Porvali et al., 2018), the resulting double salt precipitate lacks applications without further treatment. Direct thermal treatment would generate sulfur dioxide emissions and likely require high temperatures in order to transform double sulfates into REE oxides. Furthermore, the precipitate contains Na ions, which would need to be removed by chemical treatment from the calcined REE product. In the context of circularity of raw materials, it can be taken of a remarkable benefit if the sodium and sulfur present in the double salt could be reused instead of wasting them into the side streams. To that end, in this simulation study, the double salts are converted by dissolution and precipitation to hydroxides which are readily treatable, e.g. with total dissolution and solvent extraction, for further purification (Abreu and Morais, 2010):

In pelletizing magnetic iron ore concentrates, about 6 to 18 lb of bentonite binder are added per ton of concentrate during balling to give green and dry strengths to the unfired pellets. The dry bentonite is mixed into the filtercake following the magnetic concentration circuit of the plant. The filtercake contains about 10% moisture, and the water may be of highly variable composition, depending on the particular concentration circuit, its source, and the ore being treated. A knowledge of the parameters that influence the balling operation is essential for optimal efficiency in producing balls strong enough to survive the treatment during transportation from the balling device to the furnace and during the firing operation. Furthermore, very weak unfired pellets probably contribute to high dust losses and poor furnace control. The factors that determine the strength of unfired pellets have received considerable study (1,2,3,4). Tigerschiold and Ilmoni(l) pointed out the significance of the surface area of the particles being pelletized. Merklin and Childs(2) reported on the effect of material size consist, chemical additives such as soda ash, lime, balling time, ball size, and the moisture content of green balls. Iwasaki and Zetterstrom(3) examined the detrimental effects of fatty acids on the pelletizing process. Stone(4) correlated the zeta potential of bentonites with the strength of unfired pellets. He found that, in general, a high negative charge on the bentonite is conducive to good balling. Although studies of pelletizing in the iron ore industry deal with a complex multicomponent system consisting mainly of the iron mineral, bentonite, and water, the last of these has received little attention, particularly with regard to the possible effects of mill water chemistry on the pelletizing process and the strength of unfired pellets. It is widely known that the composition of mill process water is an important variable in unit operations such as flotation, thickening, and filtering and that impure water can lead to poor metallurgical results. The results of the present study indicate that the chemistry of the mill water may be an important variable in the balling operation as well. Knowledge about this variable should contribute to lowering bentonite and oil consumption and to improving furnace performance. Such knowledge can also assist those who use balling in evaluating commercial bentonites for plant use as well as those investigating balling from a more fundamental point of view In this study we have examined 1) the effects of replacing mill process water in the magnetic concentrate filtercake with pure water, and 2) the effects of several chemical impurities that are commonly found in mill process waters upon the strength of unfired pellets. The results are interpreted in terms of the zeta potential of the bentonite and magnetite particles. The data lend support to a suggested mechanism whereby the electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged particle surfaces causes bentonite-bentonite and magnetite-bentonite bonding. This mechanism would also explain why several chemical additives e.g., sodium carbonates and phosphates, have such marked effects on increasing the strength of unfired pellets.

Introduction Fracture mechanics is the study of the behavior of cracks and their modes of propagation. During cracking, energy is consumed in creating new surface area. The more energy a material absorbs, the higher is its fracture resistance. This fracture energy is provided either by work done externally, by the release of elastic strain energy within the cracked body, or by a combination of these two effects. Fracture resistance is measured in terms of either the stress intensity factor, K, or the energy release rate (also referred to as crack driving force), G. For linearly elastic materials, these two quantities are related by the following equation: [ ] where [u] is Poisson's ratio and E is the modulus of elasticity. Both K and G are direct functions of the applied force and the crack length. The process of rock cutting with full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) involves the indentation of a rock surface by rolling disc tools. Excavation occurs as fractures, extending from the locus of chip indentation, propagate between concentric disc grooves and liberate rock chips from the intact rock face. Since disc cutting is achieved by a fracture process, it is logical to anticipate that differences in cuttability of a variety of rocks should be related to the variation of fracture material properties among the rocks. Such a relation has been demonstrated between the performance of full-face TBMs and the critical crack driving force for excavation in relatively high strength, brittle, low porosity, isotropic rock (Nelson et al., 1985). The objective of this paper is to report on the results of a continued investigation of the relationship between fracture material properties and the effectiveness of disc cutting. Additional reliable data on full-face TBM performance is difficult to obtain, so that the results of disc linear cutter tests performed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) (U.K.) are utilized in this study. Fracture Material Property Evaluation If a crack tip is subjected to a perfectly plain strain condition, many materials will behave in a brittle manner, and the material resistance to fracture is constant during crack growth. This resistance is referred to as the plain strain fracture toughness, believed to be a material property. The standard testing procedure for this parameter is given in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test designation E399. To ensure plain strain conditions, acceptable specimen geometries are specified. Unless these geometric specifications are adhered to, the measured fracture resistance is regarded as the apparent fracture toughness, and a subscript Q is used, as [ ]. The methodology adopted by ASTM E399 is within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). This approach assumes that material resistance against cracking is developed instantaneously, without initial stable or subcritical crack extension. Prior to crack advancement in rock, however, much of the crack driving energy is absorbed in a localized volume in front of the crack tip, referred to as the plasticity or microcracking zone. This capability for energy absorption substantially increases material resistance, and a crack may be arrested unless an increased crack driving force is applied. The LEFM or plain strain assumptions would underestimate the actual fracture resistance of such a material. Such a conservative approximation may be desirable in the design of structures against fatigue or brittle failure. In mining or tunneling, however, an underestimation of crack resistance can lead to the selection of underrated excavation equipment and a decrease in production efficiency. The development of fracture resistance in rock is best described by the material resistance curve, or R-curve, which is a plot of fracture resistance as a function of crack extension. Introduction In 1969, the US devalued the dollar. This action, over the ensuing four years, resulted in the deregulation of the price of gold. It also resulted in the rebirth of the US gold mining industry. The extreme inflation of the 1970s led to a dramatic increase in the price of precious metals. Consequently an increased interest in the exploration for and mining of gold has occurred. The enthusiasm began among the few existing producers who had survived on marginal profits during a prolonged period of fixed prices and constantly rising costs. Then came the newcomers. They saw the opportunity to enter an industry that historically had been characterized by small operations with low capital costs. It was not until the late 1970s that large mining companies recognized that investment in gold projects could generate cash flows that previously were associated only with world class deposits. Today, gold mining has tremendous appeal for the entire mining community, despite the dramatic price drop from 1980-81 levels. There are even major firms with no mining experience attempting to gain a foothold. But how easy is it to enter the US gold mining industry? What are the basic factors that influence the economics, and what are they likely to be for the remainder of the decade? How has the industry changed, and what is the composition of the active companies? An examination of the industry will help to answer these questions. US Gold Mining History The current gold rush is actually the fifth in the 208-year history of the US. The first recorded commercial mining of gold occurred in the Southeast in 1799. It produced from small, yet relatively rich placer deposits. The famous California gold rush of 1848 placed the US as a major producer with 62.2 t (2 million oz) of output by 1850. More than 93.3 t (3 million oz) was mined by 1853, equivalent to 63% of world production. But the richest placers were soon depleted. By the end of the Civil War, annual production had declined to well below 62.2 t (2 million oz). The government then relaxed prices and the industry again began to recover. The 1870-80s saw the great mines of the California Mother Lode and Grass Valley brought into production. This was followed by development of Nevada's Comstock, which later became one of the world's largest producers. Discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1892, coupled with technological advances in the use of large dredges in the California placers, resulted in significant production increases. And, with the expansion of the Homestake mine at Lead, SD, in 1898, US output again surpassed the 93.3-t (3 million-oz) level. By 1905, produc¬tion climbed to 124.4 t (4 million oz) with the addition of the Alaskan deposits, new output at Goldfields, NV, and the introduction of the cyanidation process. During World War I, the government forced the shutdown of gold mines. By 1920, total production had dropped to little more than 62.2 t (2 million oz). Many mines remained closed until the Great Depression. This, combined with the devaluation of the US dollar in 1934, resulted in a gold price increase to about $1.13/g ($35 per oz). Then began the fourth gold rush. By 1937, output had again surpassed 124.4 t (4 million oz). This was due to an increase in primary production and new byproduct production from base metal operations. Unlike the previous period of growth, however, this period was short-lived. The imposition of Executive Order L-208 in 1942 once again forced the shutdown of most mines.
