If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

Several bauxite residue sands and muds produced by Bayer plants in the U.S. and overseas have been fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contain about 60 wt% iron and the bulk of the radioactivity in this waste. The muds are more difficult to process than the sands, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of flotation and magnetic separation techniques.

Cable shovels are capital-expensive and primary production equipment in many surface mines. The forces acting on the shovel dipper vary as the dipper moves through the muck-pile. The variations in the forces cause stress loading of the components of shovel and dipper resulting in unplanned downtimes, reduced shovel efficiency, and high mining costs. A potential solution to the above problems is the deployment of an intelligent shovel excavation (ISE) technology, with real-time formation identification, recording, and knowledge transmission capabilities. This research advances the ISE technology by developing dynamic model of cable shovel dipper using Newton-Euler techniques. The model includes the dynamic cutting and dynamic weight forces acting on the dipper as it moves through the muck-pile.

Two alternative processes for the manufacturing of zircon products were investigated by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa). These were the synthesis of doped-zircon pigments from plasma dissociated zircon, and an upgrading process to convert an inferior grade of zircon into a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A solid-state reaction process was used to produce doped-zircon pigments. The influence on the colour intensity of the pigments on a ceramic tile were compared for milled and un-milled plasma dissociated zircon (PDZ) material, prior to calcination. Pr-yellow and V-blue zircon pigments produced from PDZ with different degrees of dissociation, were also evaluated. The second zircon beneficiation process entails the upgrading of an inferior grade of zircon to a superior opacifier for ceramic applications. A calcining process in the presence of mineralizers was used to produce the product in a conventional muffle furnace. A pre-milled inferior grade zircon concentrate, with a relatively high iron and alumina content generally not suitable for high quality ceramic applications, was used in this study. The influence of the upgrading process on the opacifying properties of the zircon material was compared to that of commercially available prime grade zircon opacifier products currently being produced in South Africa. The influence of a calcining step in the presence of mineralizers with regard to the milling characteristics of the treated zircon material was also evaluated.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

In June, 1,334 underground construction and tunneling professionals gathered in Toronto, Ontario for the 2007 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). This biennial event, sponsored by SME, is one of the global underground construction industry?s major events. And this year?s RETC was the first one that included the new Underground Construction Association. [ ] (UCA) of SME. In addition, the conference?s exhibit attracted 125 equipment and service providers. The next Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference is set for June 14-17, 2009 at Caesar?s Palace, Las Vegas, NV.

Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

In recent years there have been significant advances in computing power and programming technology, enabling more complicated processes to be modelled in greater detail. This has led to increased understanding of these complex processes, including mineral processing circuits. JKSimMet was developed over the past 35 years, incorporating outcomes from various research projects conducted at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), part of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland. It is a steady-state software program that allows the user to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. JKSimFloat has been developed over the past 20 years, incorporating outcomes from the JKMRC and other institutions around the world through the AMIRA International P9 project ? The Optimisation and Simulation of Mineral Processing Circuits. It is also a steady-state software program, similar to JKSimMet, but is focused on analysing flotation circuits. Both programs have been used in a wide variety of optimisation and design projects over many years. This paper provides an overview of both JKSimMet and JKSimFloat and examples of how both programs have been used to better understand, develop and optimise mineral processing circuits around the world.

The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

For several recent TBM tunnel projects, unexpected ground conditions have been encountered, causing extra cost, considerable delay, and in some cases major claims. Undoubtedly, insufficient and/or irrelevant site investigation and testing are among the main causes of such incidents. The purpose of this paper is to review the main investigations and tests relevant for hard rock TBM projects, with particular emphasis on the considerable development that has taken place over the last few years. Also, guidelines for defining optimum scope and extent of site investigations and testing are discussed, as well as the importance of adjusting the investigations and tests according to complexity of the ground conditions and project type.

A central aspect of heap leach management and recovery optimization is solution control. Insofar as each heap is unique in physical and metallurgical properties, it is essential to understand the hydraulic parameters that control the migration of solution on a case-by-case basis. Water Management Consultants, as part of an ongoing research effort for Phelps Dodge Process Technology Center, have adapted techniques of parameter estimation for application to data typically resulting from metallurgical column testing. The parameterization is completed within the context of a variably saturated flow model that allows interpretation of available hydraulic information collected during hydrometallurgical column tests. A novel interpretation approach is introduced to extract the necessary hydrodynamic parameters from typical hydrometallurgical data sets. Results from the application of the approach to standard metallurgical test data will be presented together with a discussion of the application of information gained to the design and operation of a heap.

Most supergene copper heap leach operations today employ forced-aeration, irrespective of ore grade. Unfortunately, there is little published quantification of its benefit. There is a natural desire to strive for the ideal chemical kinetics. The reality, however, is that physical mechanisms control the commercial extraction rate. This paper presents the performance of a number of operations, their operating conditions and physical ore characteristics, which contribute to non-ideal solution distribution and variable extraction rate. Regardless whether one uses forced-aeration, commercial experience to date suggests it is prudent to design for longer leach cycle times to ensure the production target is met.

In this paper, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on intact rocks and broken rocks that were reinforced by grouting, and the effects of grouting on the strength of broken rocks were analyzed. The results show that after grouting reinforcement, the bearing capacity of broken rocks with different lithologies increased, and their uniaxial compressive strength recovered by approximately 6%–16%. The results indicated that the stronger the rock, the smaller the strength recovery of the consolidated body formed after grouting. At the same time, using borehole camera observation and deep overburden strata separations, the fracture development characteristics of surrounding rocks of the gob-side retained entry were analyzed and divided into different regions. On this basis, a guided grouting method was proposed; that is, shallow hole grouting was first used in the plastic zone of the broken surrounding rocks to form the isolation layer, and then deep grouting holes were arranged in the elastic-plastic zone of the transition zone to guide the slurry flow to the shallow unfilled zone. Therefore, the broken surrounding rocks were reinforced into an integrated body and selfbearing capacity improved.

This paper discusses the geotechnical instrumentation program on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, in Boston, Massachusetts. Particular attention is given to a state of the art Graphic Information System (GIS) application which has been developed for rapid analyses and reporting of data. This application will see extensive use during the ongoing complex downtown tunnel construction. The excavations in soft ground require cuts of up to 120 feet deep and 250 feet wide. Deformation and groundwater monitoring instruments have been installed to monitor the stability of the excavation support systems and the abutting buildings. The use of this application is illustrated with an example from an ongoing contract.

Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

In report the results of performance of research works on building up of the connected geoecological and geomechanical monitoring system for modelling and study of a state of mining massif in a region with large-scale underground mining works are discussed. The connected geoecological monitoring requires radical change of methodology of carried out works. To carry out modelling and researches it is impossible without construction of the integrated connected information model of region. Basis of construction of information systems and databases for all sections of Earth Sciences is the set of the approaches, among which, for example, methods of remote sounding, GIS- and GPS-technology etc. Computer technologies are basis on the "supercomputer" technology. The results of performance of some researches for regions of excavation of deposits of potash salts in Russia and Belarus are presented.

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modelled with conditional simulation which generates multiple possible realisations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable) to occur. Methods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modelling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimisation, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially software. An example for Resolute Mining Ltd?s Syama Gold Project in Mali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.
