Minproc Resources Inc. is developing a tailings retreatment project in Bolivia at the Colquiri zinc-tin-silver mine, in the Bolivian Andes. Mining at Colquiri has been continuous since 1940 and COMIBOL, the Bolivian state mining company, has owned and operated the underground mine since 1964. There are 10 million tonnes of tailings at Colquiri containing 0.51% Sn, 4.21% Zn and 50 g/t Ag. Minproc plans to mine and concentrate the tailings at 1.15 million tonnes per year to produce feed for pyrometallurgical upgrading. The tailings are moderately complex, with cassiterite grain size ranging from 200 to 5 pm. The marmatite (ZnFeS) in the tailings is relatively easily recovered, with zinc recovery of 80% to a 40%-45% Zn concentrate. The major problem with the zinc metallurgy is that the marmatite is complexed with iron, which results in iron contents of 14%-17% Fe in concentrate. This makes the product very difficult to sell because of the low Zn:Fe ratio. Most zinc smelters require a Zn:Fe ratio of 6:1 or 7:1, whereas this concentrate has a 3:1 ratio. Concentrate sale terms are therefore unfavorable, and the high cost of transportation from Bolivia to the smelters is an additional burden.

For mine planning in the hardcoal industry the reliable prediciton of the properties of a deposit-both ahead of the zone to be worked as well as of zones at depths not yet developed - may help improve the production results of workings. With the wide spacing of exploration drillings usual in the coal industry, it is hardly possible to establish adequately reliable plans just by simple kriging methods. During the exploration phase a decision has to be made whether the zone ahead of a face area is economically profitable and, in addition, accessible and safe in order to be included in the production planning. It is, first of all, important to gather global information on certain parts of the planning area it the form of local estimates. Moreover, cut-off problems play a critical role, e.g. if there are set cut-off thicknesses as a criterion for minability or if safety aspects have to be considered. Conditional simulation appears to be a useful geostatistic method in order to localize or predict areas of potential rock burst hazard - based on geological criteria in conjunction with the guidelines by mining authorities - in the zones ahead of a working. It is a means of providing an objective basis for the evaluation and planning of mining activities.

Ventilation conditions in working environments are usually studied by anemometry or, in complex cases, b using special tracer gases such as SF6 and 85Kr. in conjunction with chromatographic and radioactivity techniques, respectively. In some working environments, such as underground uranium mines, however, use can be made of the natural radioactivity environment (e.g.. 222rn. 220rn, and their progeny) to investigate mine ventilation conditions of practical interest. Theoretical studies and experimental data in several underground uranium mines and mine locations show that certain thoron progeny to radon progeny concentration ratios are very good indicators of ventilation conditions. Furthermore, the growth and decay of radon progeny and thoron progeny provide valuable information on mine air residence and clearance times. Some specific examples have been analyzed, such as bacterially-assisted uranium leaching operations in a partially enclosed stope, and the effect on the underground environment of turning ventilation fans on and off for a period of time. Air residence times and other variables of interest, determined from the mine radioactivity environment, were compared with more traditional techniques, such as anemometry and tracer gas chromatography. These studies were also extended to a wet non-uranium mine which exhibited relatively high concentrations of radon and its progeny.

A physical model has been developed to simulate the flows and mixing of gases in the waste of a longwall retreat coalface. The model is used in conjunction with computational modelling, and the distributions of permeability and gas emission in the model waste follow those in computer simulations (Pokryszka et al 1996). The physical model represents at 1170th scale a 200 m long, 3 m high coalface with a waste extending up to 280 m to the face start line. The model is tilted to the same seam slopes as the real face, e.g. 22° ascensional ventilation along the face and 7" slope to the dip. The purpose is to investigate the flow of three components: ventilation seepage flow through the waste; methane; and nitrogen injected to quell spontaneous combustion. A heavier-than-air surrogate gas (SF,) is used in place of methane, and therefore the model is inverted so that gas layers form along the 'roof". The main forces driving the flows in the waste (pressure gradients due to ventilation and the density difference of gas layers) are kept in proportion by appropriate scaling of the permeability. Calibration and validation used data from a coalface at a mine in the Lorraine coalfield. The model is now in operational use.

Introduction In this technical note, pilot-scale tests with two types of gravity concentrators, the Knelson separator (Anon., 1983; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984) and the Mark VIIA Reichert spiral concentrator (Balderson, 1982; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984), are described. The experimental work was concentrated on the relatively untried Knelson separator. The materials tested have different concentration characteristics: one was an artificial ore with excellent liberation characteristics and with a wide difference in density between valuable and gangue minerals; the others include a spiral concentrate containing gold from the gravity circuit of Boliden, Sweden, an old scheelite tailing from Yxsjöberg, Sweden, and an auriferous ore, containing gold, that had not been crushed to full liberation. The latter three materials contained other heavy minerals, e.g. pyrite, that can interfere with concentration. Knelson separator The Knelson separator is a compact centrifugal separator with an active fluidized bed to capture heavy minerals. A centrifugal force equal to or exceeding 50 times the force of gravity acts on the particles. The strong centrifugal force traps the heavier particles in a series of rings located in the concentrator while gangue particles are flushed out (Fig. 1). The particular separator used in the tests has a 15-cm (6-in.) diam bowl and can process between ~70 and ~250 kg/h.

Fall of ground accidents continue to be a source of injury in underground metal mines. MSHA accident statistics indicate that most rock fall accidents occur at a new face where drilling and blasting methods are used. Removing loose rock by scaling is imperative to removing the potential for rock fall injury. Detection of potentially loose rock could improve the scaling process and result in fewer rock falls. Infrared thermal imaging cameras were investigated as far back as 1966 as a tool for loose rock detection. Early on it was clear that sensitivity (e.g. detectable temperature increment) is a key factor in this application. Both pixel resolution and temperature resolution have greatly improved with modern instruments. This paper describes an evaluation of modern infrared thermal imaging camera technology to detect loose rock conditions at six underground metal mines in the western U.S. It was found that thermal images provide a high resolution visual discrimination between loose rock and intact rock. However, detecting loose rock was difficult in cases where the rock and ventilation air were at the same temperature. Loose rock was detected when rock was both warmer and cooler than the ventilation air temperature. Warm rock with cool ventilation air provided the best conditions for detection.

INTRODUCTION In each given set of operational criteria for tunnel design, ground conditions dictate the selection of the most appropriate construction method and tunnel lining. The designer has the responsibility to choose or restrict the choice of the tunnel lining to insure that the final solution provides a cost-effective permanent construction which will require the minimum of maintenance and endure to the benefit of future generations. This Paper deals with some of the aspects of precast concrete tunnel linings, their history and development through the years. It does not purport to be a comprehensive review of all that has ever been tried or developed but, hopefully, a starting point to encourage discussion and development for the future. BOLTED LINERS As a result of anticipating a shortage of cast iron tunnel lining in 1936 when work was proceeding on London Transport's Central Line Metro, a design for the precast reinforced concrete bolted lining was born. The design took the form of the traditional cast-iron lining but with substantial concrete stiffeners to take the shield ram forces. This new lining was used to construct some 14,000 feet of running tunnel using a ring width of 1'8" which was the standard cast-iron width of the time. (Groves, G.L., 1943)

Silver Bell is located about 56 km (35 miles) northwest of Tucson, AZ. It is a classic porphyry copper deposit containing enriched disseminated chalcocite ore in altered porphyritic rocks with chalcopyrite in adjacent skarn zones. The discovery of Silver Bell was an evolutionary process that occurred over a 75-year period. Recorded mining activity began about 1865 on Boot Hill east of El Tiro pit (see Fig. 1) where outcrops of altered limestones were found to contain 425 to 482 g (15 to 17 oz) Ag mixed with copper oxides. By 1874, the Young America Copper Co. was mining shallow occurrences of 30% Cu along the north side of the present Oxide pit. The ore was shipped by wagon to Yuma, AZ, and then by boat to San Francisco for smelting. By 1881, the district supported several mining companies, two small smelters, and was being favorably compared to Bisbee in local newspapers. Most of the ore mined in the period 1865-1903 came from pods of massive sulfide or their oxidized products which were distributed in an unpredictable fashion through a large skarn zone in Paleozoic limestone east of El Tiro pit. Ore grades varied from 5 to 10% Cu.

I have to express my .surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration. I do not wish these comments to detract from the engineering achievements of the authors but rather to sound a loud warning as to the application of the system. Any shaft designed for human access- be it for transport or shaft work - and any intake airway, should not consider the use of polyurethane foam. It only needs a slip with a cutting torch or an electric fault to initiate a disaster. Many countries have banned or restricted the use of polyurethane foam in the workings of a mine and maybe alternative foams (e.g. phenolics) can be used or developed

This is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the European Environment Agency that aim to raise awareness of the use of economic instruments and assess their effectiveness. The emphasis is on sharing good practice and increasing knowledge and understanding across European countries in this emerging policy area. A methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic instruments has been developed and this will examine whether the inclusion of economic instruments in complex policy packages can improve the overall performance, particularly as a prevention tool in terms of resource use and waste generation The focus for this initial study is the use of aggregate taxes in four EU countries which include the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden and the UK so that a range of experiences (e.g. geographical, political etc.) can be included. The findings will be used to inform and influence future policy development in other EEA countries. The methodological approach is divided into two main sections: - Technical analysis, which covers quantitative and qualitative analysis. - Process design, i.e. who should be involved when, where and how. Process design is essential if the full learning benefits are to be gained from the technical analysis, which is the ultimate objective of these evaluations.

The traditional impeller system for aeration and suspension of slurries, e.g. in bacterial oxidation plants, is the vertical flat blade turbine (VFBT) . This type of impeller is energy-intensive, which results in a heavy-duty design of shaft, gearbox and drive. The Mixtec BX04 agitator development programme is designed to evaluate the use of the new generation of hydrofoil impellers which consume less power and thus have potential for capital and operating cost savings as well as being possibly less damaging to the bacteria. The early tests on pyrite oxidation in a 300 litre laboratory pilot tank using the Thiobacillus ferro oxidans bacteria, showed that hydrofoil impellers had superior characteristics to the VFBT impeller and to air-agitated pachucas, with lower energy input. The geometry of the air sparge ring was found to be very important in optimizing the system. These early successes resulted in a prototype impeller and sparge ring beinq tested in a 9m3 tank where oxygen uptake in water, impeller cavitation at different impeller speeds and air flows were evaluated. Resulting from this work was the supply of an agitator unit to an operating bacterial oxidation plant where it has been successfully evaluated. Cut-off grade is one of the most critical parameters affecting project cash flow. Its sensitivity is due to the number of other parameters that are correlated with any change in its value. Changes in cut-off grade, average grade and ore tonnage vary and they in turn can affect such parameters as capital and replacement costs, recovery, life of the project and operating costs. Perhaps one of the best definitions of cut-off grade is that of Taylor (1), "... any grade that, for any specific reason, is used to separate two courses of action, e.g. to mine or to leave, to mill or to dump ... . Obviously the most likely specific reason is one governed by economics, involving the return of investment and sufficient profit to motivate development and mining of the deposit. In this paper the cut-off grade is defined as that mining limit which will maximise the economic return for a projected mining venture. The following brief literature survey indicates that when computing the optimum cut-off grade there is a need to be able to directly compute the Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) or Net Present Value (NPV), as economically as possible, while allowing for parameter dependencies and variation in project structure.

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

"For the first time, the influence of stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC) as a collector, on the flotation behavior of lepidolite (Uljin, South Korea) was systematically examined in Denver Sub-A cells. Flotation tests were carried out by varying amount of STAC (50–200 g/ton), feed size (-65, -100, -150, and -200 mesh), and solution pH. The impeller speed of 1000 rpm, flotation time of 10 min and AF-65 (a frother) of 250 mL/ton were invariably applied. In order to complement flotation experiments, zeta potential measurements and XRD analysis were conducted. XRD results showed that the ores were mainly composed of lepidolite, muscovite, quartz, calcite and albite. In addition, zeta potential results showed that isoelectric points were about 2.5, 2.3, and 9.7 for quartz, albite, and calcite, respectively, and lepidolite was determined to be less than 2. Overall, the results of 3-stage flotation showed that Li2O grade and recovery tended to increase with increasing STAC dosage and decreasing feed size. In addition, Li2O grade increased with decreasing pH. The results were explained by the extent of the interaction between STAC and each mineral.INTRODUCTION A great number of potential applications of lithium are being developed currently by the thermonuclear fusion power generation industry(1,2) as well as by the battery and fuel cell industry(3). Even though lithium is mainly consumed in the form of lithium metal and some lithium compounds, about 10% of total lithium production is consumed directly as mineral concentrates by the ceramic industry for the manufacture of special ceramics and mica based glass-ceramics(4). Granitic pegmatites normally contain feldspars, quartz, and mica in addition to lithium-bearing minerals such as spodumene (LiAl(SiO3)2), petalite (LiAlSi4O10), and lepidolite (KLi2Al(Al,Si)3O10(F,OH)2). The amount and grade of metallic minerals tend to gradually decrease and become lower, leading to the increase in the price of base metal or metallic compound(5). Accordingly, recent studies have been extensively devoted to developing the technique to improve the grade of metallic minerals from low grade metallic ores(6,7). Nevertheless, studies regarding the improvement of Li grade from lepidolite ores are very scarce. Lepidolite is a phyllosilicate mineral of the mica group and is often associated with other minerals such as calcite, muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, which need to be separated for lepidolite enrichment(8). Many studies have reported the flotation techniques for separating calcite, muscovite, feldspar, and/or quartz from various targeting minerals(9-11); however, there has been no attempt to investigate physico-chemical properties of lepidolite and its separation from such types of gangue minerals through flotation. Hence, in this study, for the first time, flotation has been carried out for the quaternary ammonium salts (stearyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (STAC, (CH3)3CH3(CH2)16NCl))-lepidolite system based on only the electrokinetic property of minerals that consist of lepidolite ores without adding any depressant to get an initial insight on its flotation behavior. The experimental variables that influence the lepidolite flotation such as amount of collectors, feed size and solution pH have been also examined."

Introduction Most primary molybdenite producers use a selective flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and nonsulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step. The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother), and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide, and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born et al. (1976) and Malhotra et al. (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50% of the total molybdenite flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors that would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate nonoil-based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil. A series of potential nonoil-based collector classes were identified and evaluated in the laboratory against the current collector system. The metallurgical performance of these collector classes was related to their chemical structures. The results of this study are discussed. Collector classes A survey of sulfide mineral collectors was performed with the objective of identifying and selecting potential collectors for molybdenite flotation. The available reagents were categorized into 10 general classes. Table 1 summarizes these collector classes, their chemical formulas, the manufacturers, and selected commercial collectors in each class that were evaluated in the present study. Experimental procedure A Climax ore sample, assaying 0.3% MoS2, 2.2% FeS2, 0.007% Cu, 0.003% Pb, and 0.03 oz per ton Ag, was used for this study. Standard laboratory rougher flotation test procedure involved grinding a 2-kg ore charge in a rod mill at 60% solids. Reagents were added to the rod mill including a collector, syntex (0.005 kg/t), pine oil (0.03 kg/t), lime (to adjust pH to 8), and sodium silicate (0.15 kg/t). The ground pulp was transferred to a 1000-g cell, and flotation was performed at 35% solids and 1800 rpm using a Denver D-1 flotation machine. Concentrate was collected for a flotation time of six minutes. The general approach used in the present study was to substitute the nonoil-based collectors at two to three different dosage levels (0.01 to 0.15 kg/t) for vapor oil in the bench-scale, open-circuit rougher flotation tests

"Respirable dust in underground coal mines has long been associated with lung diseases, and regular dust sampling is required for assessing occupational exposures. At present, respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined, but considering recent and yet unexplained increases in the incidence of lung disease amongst miners in specific geographic regions, more information about specific dust characteristics is urgently needed. While particle-level dust analysis is ideal, it is impractical for large numbers of dust samples because it is both time and cost intensive. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), however, is an alternative option, which offers the ability to determine the total coal to mineral mass ratio in a dust sample – analogous to proximate analysis of bulk coal samples for determining ash content. Here, preliminary development of a TGA method for this purpose is presented. The method is being developed to evaluate dust collected on mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters using approved permissible sampling equipment. INTRODUCTION Based on the particle size, airborne mine dust can be classified in three categories: inhalable dust (< 100 µm in size), thoracic dust (< 25 µm in size), and respirable dust (< 5 µm in size) (Ramani et al., 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO, 1999) defines inhalable dust particles as those which can be breathed into the nose and mouth, and thoracic dust particles as those which can penetrate airways of the head and enter the airways of the lung. On the other hand, respirable dust particles can penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles into the gas-exchange regions (alveoli) of the lungs (WHO, 1999). Hlavay (1992) reported that the seriousness of the damage in the lungs and respiratory tract is based on amount of dust remaining in these organs, and the amount of dust depends on the extent of dust exposure, the size distribution of the dust particles, and the capability of the body for dust elimination. Inhalation of respirable coal dust by miners can cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease which is called coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). Silicosis is another fatal lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica dust. In CWP and silicosis, dust particles deposit in the lungs, damage the lung tissue, and ultimately cause scarring which cannot be reversed (Colinet, 2010). While overall incidence occupation-related lung disease amongst coal miners in the US has been declining for over 40 years, it appears that there has been a recent increase in specific locations in Central Appalachia (CDC, 2006; Pollock et al. 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011). Although this trend is yet unexplained, one theory is that particular dust characteristics in these locations may be a factor (Hassan and Lau; Page & Oraniscak 2002). For example, several studies have indicated that different coals may generate different amounts of respirable dust (e.g., see Page, 1993 and Litton and Page, 1994), and the surrounding geology may also play a role in terms of the types of dust particles generated. Although respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined as part of regulatory compliance sampling, more information about specific dust characteristics (e.g., size, shape and composition) is urgently needed."

"This paper describes the development of a 3D finite element model for predicting ground movements caused by construction of 7.1 m diameter twin bored tunnels for the Crossrail project in London using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines. The model uses the commercial FE code, Plaxis 3D, to represent the face pressure, conical shield, grouting process and activation of precast segmental concrete lining systems through a set of boundary conditions that advance through the soil mass along a prescribed trajectory. Soil behavior is described using the Mohr-Coulomb soil model with input parameters calibrated from laboratory element tests. The analyses focus on the performance of the EPB tunneling machines in greenfield conditions beneath Hyde Park, where the tunneling occurs within deep layers of relatively uniform London Clay. The model predictions are in good agreement with surface and sub-surface vertical settlements measured at a well-instrumented section, but tend to overestimate the measured lateral displacements towards the tunnel. Ongoing studies are focused on the role of soil behavior and the approximations in FE model predictions of tunnel-induced ground deformations. Introduction Since their introduction in the 1970’s, closed-face Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines have become widely used for soft ground tunnel construction. The EPB design relies on a screw conveyor system to regulate the pressure of the excavated soil/spoil within the head chamber and hence control stability at the face of the machine. One of the key design issues in the application of EPB machines is to establish how control parameters, including the advance rate, face pressure and grouting processes (used to compensate for the tail void at the rear of the shield and to infill gaps between the precast lining rings and surrounding soil) affect and/or control the far-field ground movements. For closed-face systems, short-term deformations are associated with ground losses at the face, overcutting and ploughing of the shield and poor control of grouting in the tail void; while long-term deformations can occur due to consolidation and creep within the surrounding soil (and are closely connected to the seepage boundary conditions;e.g., Laver & Soga, 2012). The control parameters for advancing the EPB machine can have a significant effect on the magnitude and distribution of the far-field deformations. Therefore, analyses of the ground response to tunneling require accurate modeling of the soil stratigraphy and constitutive behavior as well as the construction process. Finite element (FE) methods have been used to simulate tunnel construction since the early 1980s, but only a few studies involved three-dimensional modelling of mechanized tunneling (e.g., Finno and Clough 1985; Bernat and Cambou 1999; Swoboda and Abu-Krisha 1999; Dias et.al. 2000; Melis et.al. 2002; Kasper and Meschke 2004; Möller 2006). In order to get a better understanding of the effect of the construction process and soil properties on the development of the ground deformations more comprehensive models of tunnel excavation and tunnel support are required in order to capture the 3D nature of mechanized tunneling and the effect of construction parameters such as advance rate, face and grout pressure."

Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. PRINCIPLES OF MINE PLANNING During the initial planning stages, all mining operations are analyzed and evaluated in a similar fashion. This similarity holds true because the mine-planning procedure can be reduced to a network of interrelated systems that are tied together by a common philosophy of mine planning: namely, that the resource is to be extracted in a manner which is safe, efficient, and profitable. The success of the mining operation cannot be guaranteed unless each of these three requirements is met. Fig. 1 shows a flowchart for the initial planning of any mining operation. Notice that there is a preplanning stage that leads to the planning of four interrelated systems. The preplanning stage includes property exploration, estimation of production and manpower requirements, and the establishment of construction timetables. The four systems, evaluated after the pre-planning stage, are broken down into the following: (1) Excavation and handling system, (2) Strata control system, (3) Operating support system, and (4) Service support system. The Excavation and handling system includes the selection of all the equipment for the removal of the resource from its in-place deposit (e.g., draglines, continuous miners, rock drills, etc.) and for the transportation of the mined material from the face (e.g., belt conveyors, trucks, etc.). The Strata control system incorporates all those considerations which maintain the integrity of the roof, ribs, floor, and overburden both during and after the extraction phase; typical considerations in this area include pillar sizing, artificial support of the immediate roof in mine entries, and subsidence protection. The Operating support system contains the "necessary evils" of mine planning; the system consumes a large percentage of the mining engineer&apos;s planning time but does not contribute to the actual extraction of the resource. However, if proper attention is not paid to the various components of the system, such as ventilation, drainage, and power, then the mining operation will not perform to its capabilities. Finally, the Service support system is composed of those operations which keep the mine running efficiently; typical examples of these include maintenance and sup- ply. One important concept that Fig. 1 is designed to emphasize is that the four systems are interrelated; typically, a slight alteration of one can affect the performance of another. If these interrelationships are ignored, the effects on the system can be disastrous. The mine preplanning stage and the four subsequent system evaluations constitute the Analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart. After this portion of the study is completed, the overall projected operation can be evaluated by techniques such as financial analysis. This last step in the study is referred to as the Synthesis of the previously calculated parameters into an overall plan. Much has been written about the overall evaluation of mining properties, but, over the past thirty years, very little has been written about the analysis of mine- planning systems in a coordinated manner. Further, those texts which attempted this topic have failed to give sufficient examples for successful implementation, thus supporting the operating engineers&apos; lament that it is easy to discuss theories but difficult to show applications. This text is intended to bridge this gap. Examples of the various stages of the analysis portion of the mine planning flowchart shown in Fig. 1 will be covered in this text, with the exception of the Service support system, since this system is oriented more toward day-to-day planning than long-term mine planning. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDIZATION The benefits that can be derived from an international standardization of the units used in mining engineering calculations are numerous. The interchange- ability of equipment parts and the ability to analyze and compare performance and design specifications on an equal basis are just two of the goals desired by both manufacturers and mine operators. Unfortunately, conversion to an international standard has not been rapidly achieved by engineers in the United States, due to their training under the English system. The Society of Mining Engineers of AIME has made the commitment for the adoption of the Systeme International d&apos;Unites (SI) in all mining engineering calculations. Since many practicing mining engineers and students in undergraduate programs still find difficulty in relating to SI units, the calculations in this textbook will use the English system, with Table 1 available for conversion into SI units.

Introduction Pure alunite (KAl3 (SO4 )3 (OH)6 ) contains 37% A1203. In the alunite ore found on Milos Island, Greece, opal is the principal gangue while some aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides are also present. Processing of alunite ore leads to the recovery of potassium sulfate, alusil (alumina-silica mixture), and sulfur dioxide. An interesting process has been developed in Greece (Svoronos, 1977) consisting mainly of roasting the alunite ore mixed with KCl to disrupt the mineral lattice in preparation for separating its components. The thermal decomposition of alunite at approximately 600°C occurs by the reaction: KAl3 (SO4)3 (OH)6 + nSiO2 + 6KC1 - 4 K2SO4 + 3 A1203 . nSiO2 + 6 HCl + 3H20 According to the process pure alunite mixed with 543 kg KCl, 840 kg K2SO4, 370 kg alusil, 264 kg HCl, and 65 kg H2O are produced. The roasted calcine is leached in hot water. The potassium sulfate leach slurry is then thickened and washed to obtain a solid residue (alusil) plus a solution rich in potassium sulfate. Assuming the alunite ore feed consists of 50% to 60% alunite, the solid residue might consist of approximately 22% to 27% A1203, silica, iron, and titanium oxides. This leach residue could be digested in a hot sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve alumina. An amount of the alumina (approximately 10%) would not dissolve. In addition, part of the silica would dissolve requiring removal from the solution in a subsequent desilication operation. The same leach residue could be attacked by mineral acids such as a diluted hydrochloric acid to extract aluminum chloride (Sawyer et al., 1983). Alumina and aluminum are presently produced from bauxite of which Greece has important reserves. If this aluminous material (alusil) could be beneficiated by any physical process, then it would be considered as a raw material for the production of fire-clay refractories instead of an alternate source of alumina. Experimental procedure Extensive laboratory work (mineralogical and chemical analyses) indicates that alusil is a mixture of liberated (mostly) alumina and silica particles, not a natural silicate mineral. Table 1 shows the chemical assays of two alusil samples that were obtained from a roasted alunite ore leaching pilot plant. The samples used for the experiments were a very fine alusil powder (K80 = 400 mesh, 38 µm). These were pulped in tap water. Desliming of the pulp before each flotation test was ineffective. Flotation tests were performed in a 2000 ml Denver cell. A standard 500-g sample was first conditioned at a pulp density 50% solids for 5 min with hydrofluoric (HF) acid solution (40%). The temperature of the conditioned pulp was measured and kept nearly constant at 50°C. The pH of the conditioned pulp was also regulated to 2.5-3 with HF solution. Then ARMAC C solution (2%) as well as two drops of fuel oil and one drop of AEROFROTH 65 were added and the pulp was reconditioned for 2 min. After conditioning, the viscous pulp was transfered to the flotation cell. It was then diluted with warm water to about 15% solids and floated to separate silica from alumina particles. A rougher froth product that was cleaned and recleaned was obtained from the flotation tests.
