Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

The ever increasing energy costs associated with mining at depth has become an important issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco Limited?s Creighton Mine being the deepest has the highest energy cost per ton due to the ventilation system requirements. A review of the ventilation systems was undertaken with respect to current practices and identification of opportunities to the practical application of technology that would facilitate energy savings. Energy conservation initiatives such as time of day controls have been implemented; however there still remained some opportunity for further reduction. Based on previous studies that identified opportunities due to actual time spent in the workplace, our mining method and ventilation design, it was determined that Ventilation on Demand (VOD) could provide further additional energy reductions with respect to our auxiliary fans. A pilot project has recently been initiated to apply a Ventilation on Demand concept to two 112 kW auxiliary fans and their related workings located on the 2340m level of Creighton Mine. The project objective is to determine the practical methodology and application of this technology in the field. This project involves the installation of variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on the auxiliary fans to allow variable volume (through speed control) based on demand. The required flow is determined based on equipment and/or personnel via identification tags. The Fans adjust to the flow requirements as measured by flow sensors. Since the fans are sized for the final requirements the required flows can be achieved regardless of system length. Energy savings are realized by supplying only the volumes (power) as required and only when required. This paper discusses the rational and program being tested at the VALE Inco Limited, Creighton Mine.

Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.

On Friday, May 27, 1983 at about 6 p.m., an avalanche occurred at the Revenue-Virginius Mine. Six mine personnel and two contract diamond drillers were trapped when the avalanche covered and blocked the portal, the only access into the mine. The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is an old volcanic caldera. It has dikes and other intrusions, many of which are mineralized with sulfide ores rich in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Several peaks rise above 4,260 m (14,000 ft) and the district has been the location of avalanches dating back to prehistoric times. This is evidenced by the numerous snow-slide chutes that are infamous enough to be named on topographic maps.

SME’s Arizona Conference was held at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson on Dec. 4 and 5, 2005. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. Important topics discussed among the attendees included the price of copper, community relations and education.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

The earthmover tire shortage has been a case of bust and boom for the tire industry. Tire producers were unwilling to invest ahead of the mining boom. In their defense, though, the metals sector of the mining industry tends to be cyclic, tire manufacturers are not prescient. Until two years ago, low tire demand depressed prices. The incentive to invest in new, big-tire capacity was almost nonexistent, according to Prashant Prabhu, president of Michelin Earthmover Tire worldwide. “There has been very poor anticipation or a miscaluation of the amplitude of the (tire) demand on the part of just about everybody,” said Prabhu. What a turnaround. The earthmover tire market has grown by 30 percent over the past two years. Now there are not enough earth-mover tires and likely won’t be for the next two years. Goodyear said it was offering customers bias-ply tires when it could not supply enough radial-ply tires. Komatsu said it lost equipment sales because it could not provide the tires that customers requested. Volvo and Caterpillar said they are delivering some vehicles without tires, either promising tires later or leaving the customers – mine operators – to find their own rubber.

Basic parameters affecting the stability of foams have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Scheludko and Exerowa (1959) to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, MIBC, and PPG. The results were compared with the froth stabilities measured using the shake tests and the film elasticity calculated using the model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that the froth stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother concentration and type.

Booster fans, large underground fans, can increase the volumetric efficiency of ventilation systems by helping to balance the pressure and quantity distribution throughout a mine, reducing leakage and reducing the total power requirement. However, in ventilation systems that use booster fans there is a potential for system recirculation, the leakage of return air to intake air, and also for localized recirculation near the fan through the bulkhead and airlock doors. Air that is recirculated locally decreases the system efficiency because the quantity of air flow through the fan increases without increasing the airflow throughout the system. To understand the detailed flow characteristics of a ventilation system with a booster fan, two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using the software Ansys-FLUENT. Though two-dimensional models do not represent the full complexity of the flow dynamics, they do provide a good representation of the flow characteristics and they allow for a qualitative analysis of how the flow dynamics are affected by the system characteristics. The CFD models were used to evaluate how the number of booster fans, the booster fan placement, the location and geometry of the fan installation and the construction of the airlock system affect the flow characteristics and the localized efficiency of the ventilation system.

Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

BACKGROUND The history of the Pine Point Mine is a rich one. This property once boasted one of the largest and most profitable lead-zinc mines in Canada's long and storied mining history. The Pine Point mine used open pit technology to extract the ore, but they faced several challenges. In addition to logistics problems with haul distances and metal prices, the mine faced the challenge of a large in flow of water from the Great Slave Lake. Eventually, the Pine Point Mine was closed leaving behind a large deposit of lead-zinc ore. Following the closing of the Pint Point Mine, Tamerlane Ventures Inc. acquired this property which includes approximately 70 million tonnes of lead-zinc reserves. The initial phase of this project will concentrate on the R-190 deposit as a test site to prove their new approach for extracting the ore. The R-190 reserve is believed to have approximately 1,014,000 million tonnes of high grade ore varying from 5% to 52% combined lead-zinc. Once the pilot project proves the approach is valid, the process will be repeated in approximately 33 other ore bodies on the property. This paper is written to discuss the design process to determine the most effective means of placing production and service equipment in the same shaft. Currently the design work and the mining scheme is complete, but lead-zinc pricing has prevented Tamerlane Ventures Inc. from moving forward with the project.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

The Hatch Mott MacDonald/Bechtel Joint Venture team is designer and construction manager for the 5.25-mile Tunnel Segment of the overall 16-mile Silicon ValleyRapid Transit Project, which extends the existing Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system southward from Fremont to San Jose. The Tunnel Segment includes twin boredtunnels, mined cross passages, and three deep station excavations situated in highlyvariable ground, high ground water table, and a dense urban setting with high-risebuildings adjacent to the largest excavation. This paper will discuss design challengesthat have arisen with the excavations and the proposed solutions.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.
