In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. Within the metal/nonmetal mining sector, fall-related incidents account for a large proportion of fatal and non-fatal injuries. However, the events and contributing factors leading up to these incidents have not been fully investigated. To help provide a clearer picture of these factors, an analysis of imminent danger orders issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) between 2010 and 2017 at both surface and underground metal/nonmetal mine sites revealed that most orders are associated with fall risks. Of these cases, 84% involved the workers not using fall protection, fall protection not being provided, or the improper use of fall protection. Fall risks for workers most frequently occurred when standing on mobile equipment, performing maintenance and repairs on plant equipment, or working near highwalls. In most cases, a single, basic, corrective action (e.g., using fall protection) would have allowed workers to perform the task safely. Overall, these findings suggest that a systematic approach is needed to identify, eliminate, and prevent imminent danger situations. Furthermore, to protect mineworkers from falls from height, frequently performed tasks requiring fall protection should be redesigned to eliminate the reliance on personal fall protection.

Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable that affected the structural characteristics of the calcine which, in turn, affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature was closely monitored since October 2000. Original design temperature was 550oC. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500oC resulted in gold recovery increase by more than 6 percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an “intelligent” process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures thus achieving high gold recoveries between 92 and 93 percent. Under those conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease of gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g. porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. This paper describes the results of a series of comparative studies in which polygonal, IDS, and kriging were compared for their local estimation accuracy. The specific objective of this study was to determine the impact that the particular nature of the mineralization has on the results of such comparative studies. The study was performed on simulated coal deposits and the evaluation parameter chosen was the coal thickness. For this study, many conditionally simulated deposits having different degrees of seam thickness continuity were first developed. Each simulated deposit covered an area of 30,000 ft x 30,000 ft which was, in turn, subdivided into 100 mine planning blocks of 3,000 ft x 3,000 ft in size. Thickness estimation was made for these mine planning blocks using surrounding DDH assays. In all cases tested, e.g., from a perfect continuity to a complete lack of continuity in coal seam thickness, kriging gave the best estimates among the three, followed by IDS and polygonal methods. As expected, the relative efficiency (i.e., superiority) of kriging over other estimators was highly dependent on the nature of mineralization.

Numerous lead-zinc-barite-fluorite ore deposits, with simple mineralogy and roughly concordant with bedding, are found widely distributed all over the world, having been denominated and well described as "stratiform deposits" or "strata-bound ore bodies", not having any genetic relationship. During several years, its origin has been discussed, without getting to general agreement regarding the main mining districts of this type. Through studies made of large stratiform deposits in the United States, Europe and Russia, it has been found that there are, within this classification, syngenctic diagenetic and epigenetic ore bodies. During the Symposium about the genesis of the stratiform lead-zinc-fluorite-barite deposits, carried out in New York in 1966, Frank G. Snyder (1), presented an excellent analysis of the theories of the origin of these deposits and of the evaluation of the criteria regarding classification. As per his definitions (Table 1), "a deposit is syngenetic if formed by processes similar to and simultaneously with the enclosing rock, epigenetic if introduced into a pre-existing rock and a diagenetic origin implies deposition of metals with the host sediments but with recrystallization, rearrengement and limited migration".

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), the authors showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/tonne of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits. Geospatial analysis identified a total resource of 340 tonnes stored at the 141 sites sampled in this study. While this analysis did not quantify the basin-wide REE inventory, it does indicate the impact that processing cut-off grades will have on the overall AMDp resource base.

A common problem in mineral processing and chemical engineering is the need to estimate flow rates and/or weight ratios involved with engineering operations for which it is inherently difficult to directly measure stream weights. Simple examples of this situation include stream separators (a classifier operating on a particle flow) and stream mixers (the mixing of new feed and circulating load in a ball mill circuit). Often in these types of operations, it is possible to sample the streams involved to get approximate component analyses (e.g. size distributions of solid streams, chemical composition of chemical streams). In this paper various formulae are developed which can be used to estimate stream flow rates or weight ratios given information on the stream components. The type and level of experimental error present in the stream component analyses does have an important bearing on the numerical values (and reliability) of the weight ratios calculated by the various formulae. A simple but theoretically sound method is shown for selecting appropriate estimation formulae for any given engineering operation. The derived formulae are applied to sets of experimental classification data for illustration purposes.

Nevada is especially well endowed with industrial minerals, both in the number of ore deposits and the diversity of commodities. More than 600 significant industrial mineral deposits, containing 22 principal commodities, are present, in the State. The materials produced in Nevada in 1978 had a value of approximately 113 million dollars, and additional processing of some of them (e.g. gypsum into wallboard, limestone and clay into cement) added considerable more value. Table 1 shows the value of Nevada&apos;s industrial mineral production in 1978. Nevada currently supplies 85 percent of the country&apos;s barite producing 1.6 million tonnes (1.8 million short tons) valued at 30 million dollars in 1978. Nevada is second in diatomite production and contributes one-third of total lithium produced. Other industrial minerals being produced include clays, fluorspar, gypsum, lightweight aggregates, limestone and dolomite, magnesite and brucite, perlite, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. In general, Nevada produces high-value industrial minerals which are not consumed within the State, but rather, are shipped out of State. In contrast, most more populous states produce larger tonnages of lower value industrial minerals which are consumed chiefly within that state.

The loading characteristics of gold-bromide species onto activated carbon were evaluated using a batch system. The overall loading of gold onto activated carbon was rapid for the first few hours, but it continued without cessation as a result of the reduction of gold. Therefore, conventional equilibrium considerations were not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, an abnormally high, loading capacity value of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kg Au/t) could be attained in 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of (AuBr4)- species to the external surface to be reduced to metallic gold by carbon. Elution of gold from loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical, and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon for gold-bromo species is discussed.

In the 2000 page Handbook of Mineral Dressing by A. F. Taggart, the subject of material or metallurgical balances is covered in only six pages of eve-straining type. Although Taggart&apos;s work was compiled before 1945, and there has been significant progress since then in most areas of mineral processing, the practicing metallurgist&apos;s approach to metallurgical balances remains exactly the same as described in those six pages. There are several portions of Taggart&apos;s text appropriate to introduce the subject of this paper which I would like to quote: "Milling Calculations. Computations of per¬formance in milling are complicated by the fact that it is a continuous rather than a batch operation, that the quantities of solid materials handled are large and usually mixed with water, hence difficult or impos¬sible to weigh. Fortunately it is possible to determine many facts concerning perfor¬mance without knowing weights, if the value of various constituents is known in some common unit, e.g., the content of some par¬ticular metal or mineral, or of water, or some ingredient soluble therein, or of par¬ticles of a particular size or falling within some particular size range, or the like."

Asbestos is not the name of a distinct mineral species, but rather the commercial term applied to the fibrous form of several minerals differing widely in composition. There are some 30 known varieties of asbestos but of this number only 6 are of economic importance, and these, in order of economic significance are chrysotile, crocidolite (or blue asbestos), amosite, anthophyllite, actinolite and tremolite. Chrysotile asbestos was formed by the introduction of hydrothermal solutions into fractures in serpentinised ultrabasic host rocks. These solutions dissolved magnesium silicate from the wall rocks, and with subsequent lower temperature and pressure they became supersaturated, and crystals of chrysotile asbestos formed. The chemical composition is variable but is classified as a hydrous magnesium silicate, containing a high percentage of magnesia and water, plus varying amounts of alumina and ferrous and ferric iron. Other asbestos minerals are formed by a similar process but with a different host rock e.g. crocidolite occurs only in iron&apos; formation. The chemical composition of asbestos minerals other than chrysotile, shows a wide variation, but in general may be classified as silicates, or metasilicates, containing varying amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron.

Performance data from phosphate plants are often untrustworthy because of difficulties associated with highly variable feeds and unstable equipment operation. In some cases, this problem is further compounded by improper sampling procedures and unreliable laboratory analyses. Questionable data often lead to misleading conclusions that result in lost productivity and profits. Data reliability may be checked using mass balances, but the mathematics associated with this procedure can be overwhelming when multiple data sets or complex circuits are evaluated. To overcome this problem, a simple spreadsheet-based mass balance program has been developed specifically for plant operators. To use this program, operators simply enter a description of their circuit and input the assay values (e.g., % BPL, % Insol, etc.) for each stream. The program then generates the best estimates of the assay values and flags values that may be unreliable. The spreadsheet is specifically designed to be easy to use and requires no knowledge of statistics or programming. This manuscript reviews the mass balance problem and describes how spreadsheet programs can be used to evaluate plant data. An example problem involving the analysis of data around a two-stage phosphate flotation circuit is presented.

Critical mineral endowment of mine wastes in two mining districts in New Mexico (Copper Flat at Hillsboro and Carlisle-Center mines in the Steeple Rock district) will be characterized and estimated. “Beta-testing” of USGS procedures was performed. Potential critical minerals at these deposits include As, Bi, Te, Zn, Co, Ni, Mg, Mn, and fluorite. pH and particle size of samples were analyzed to determine weathering and migration potential of heavy metals. Soil pH was also measured to determine the potential for Acid Rock Drainage. The pH of the waste rock piles ranged from 3.66 to 5.67 which indicates fine- grained pyrite or sulfide oxidation. The samples collected from the tailings however, showed a different range of pH, from 6.30 to 8.62, probably due to the presence of carbonates. Difference in particle size fractions and its distribution along the slope are generally influenced by natural occurrences (e.g., gravity and pre-mining hydrothermal alteration) and operational activities such as material piling or dumping. Future work includes analyses of mineralogy and particle size correlation and estimation of critical mineral endowment of these mine wastes at New Mexico.
