This paper reviews the results of the subsidence research prop ram at Sandia National Laboratories. The manuscript highlights the following: the application of empirical methods (profile functions) to the subsidence above longwall panels in the U.S.; the use of the "rubble model" to describe the behavior of broken strata as it distends when it falls to the Mine floor (or top of the rubble pile) and then is subsequently compacted as it is loaded by overlying elements of strata; and, the application of physical modeling techniques (centrifuge simulations) and numerical techniques to study the failure mechanisms in highly structured stratigraphy. The capabilities of the latter two are illustrated ')y comparing their predictions to the results of a field case that has complicated stratigraphy.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for

A qualitative test program was sponsored jointly by the University of Alaska and Eriez Magnetics, in order to study placer gold nugget recovery using an eddy-current separator. Various gold nuggets from Alaska, ranging from 6.4 mm to 63.5 mm in size, were tested. All testing was performed using an Eriez Laboratory ESC, Model REA, fitted with 2000 gauss, surface field strength magnetic rotor. The belt speed was set to 91 meters per minute and the rotor speed was set to 2500 rpm in the forward direction. The splitter was adjusted to just reject the largest pieces of rock that measured an average 76 mm x102 mm x 127 mm. Based on the results of this limited test work, it can be recommended to placer gold mine operators, that Eriez Magnetics ECS technology is a viable and practical concentration technology for coarse gold recovery. Silver and platinum were also tested.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

A stochastic approach was developed and applied to the Butte, Montana Hillside abandoned mining site for modeling stormwater runoff and subsequent receiving stream loadings. This approach enabled capture and quantification of the uncertainty associated with stormwater quality data and allowed the prediction of copper and zinc concentrations in the receiving stream caused by runoff from the Butte Hillside during storm events. Runoff flows and stormwater concentrations were input to the model as probability distribution functions. Monte Carlo simulation allowed prediction of expected instream concentrations in the form of cumulative distributions functions. The modeling results allowed evaluation of current best management practices (BMPs), targeting of future BMPs, and identification of key data gaps to fill during future sampling activities. This modeling approach is considered extendable to other active and inactive mining sites. Output from a model of this type is easily understood and can be used to communicate effective stormwater management to site regulators. Furthermore, application of this modeling approach will facilitate the development and implementation of a site-specific stormwater management plan and will optimize efforts to achieve standards for compliance with stormwater discharge permits.

The owners of large infrastructure projects are challenged on how to implement sound engineering and construction contracting strategies that address their prime expectations: a quality job, on time and within budget. With the increasing number of large engineering and construction projects worldwide, owners continue to search for alternative contracting strategies to address their risk, quality, sustainability (operability and performance), schedule, and budget concerns. Coupled with the shortage of resources, delays, political pressures, and other obstacles in procurement and negotiation processes, engineers and contractors are also looking for creative ways to optimize contract packaging strategies for efficient and successful project delivery. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and suggests a balanced evaluation, ranking and selection strategy in procurement of both engineering and construction services for large tunneling and other infrastructure projects. A number of owners? general preferences and viewpoints are discussed on large tunnel programs encompassing water and wastewater conveyance systems, pump stations and treatment facility upgrades. Contract packaging strategies and project phasing and segmenting alternatives for preliminary engineering, final design, construction management, and actual construction of facilities are featured for several large water and wastewater infrastructure projects. While the selection (and the relevant selection process and criteria) and performance of service providers, whether for engineering or construction, have profound effects on the outcome of any given project, this paper only examines strategies for con-tract packaging. More specifically, the authors evaluated case studies and developed a range of recommendations for packaging of large water and wastewater infrastructure projects with multiple components.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.

Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

Impala Platinum?s No.16 Shaft mine is currently under construction and is expected to reach full production of 256 500 tons per month by 2014. Mining will start at 1 260 m below surface with a maximum mining depth of 1 535 m where virgin rock temperatures of 56.6°C will be experienced. As a result of depth, high virgin rock temperature and narrow reef mining, an expected total of 31.5 MW[R] of air cooling capacity will be required to achieve acceptable underground conditions. This will be achieved by cooling mine intake air in a single dedicated air cooling installation located on surface. The compact installation includes air cooling spray chamber, refrigeration machines, condenser cooling towers, evaporator and condenser water reticulation as well as all electrical and control systems. Construction and commissioning of the first phase of this air cooling installation has recently been completed on a turn-key contract basis.
