The Formative Years Douglas Winston Fuerstenau was born December 6, 1928 in Hazel, SD to Edwin Arnold and Hazel Pauline (Karterud) Fuerstenau. His father, of German extraction, was a farmer and, later, a cabinet maker, while his mother, of Norwegian lineage, was a school teacher. His parents are still alive today at ages 91 and 88, respectively. Two younger brothers, Richard and Maurice and a sister, Jean, completed the family. The family first lived near Watertown and later in Lemmon and Mobridge, SD. The 1930's were a difficult period for any family in South Dakota. A decade-long drought made this a part of the dust bowl, which together with a serious infestation of grasshoppers (the locust plague described in The Bible), and the world-wide depression, made living difficult for all. In spite of these privations, Doug has many happy memories of his childhood which can be attributed to the resilience of youth and a strong family structure. He has fond memories of summers spent with his cousins on family farms where the children were introduced to farm chores at an early age. When he was old enough, he worked in a grocery store after school. At the age of 14 he spent the summer hearding 2,000 sheep near Lemmon, SD as his contribution to the war effort in that labor-short period. He remembers well the dust storms of the 1930ts, the destruction at his grandmother's farm by tornado, pulling weeds on the farm, threshing grain with a monstrous steam-driven machine and such pleasant childhood activi- ties as fishing for bullheads, hunting for rabbits, searching for arrowheads in newly plowed fields, and ice skating in the winter. Early in life his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, a love of learning and the need for a good education. In 1943, the family moved to Rapid City, SD. With a population of 13,000, it was

"INTRODUCTION As one of the most pressing and important political debates of this century, climate change has captured global attention and is forcing governments to take action towards decreasing GHG and carbon emission levels below what was previously thought to be necessary. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery powered A/C systems and diesel-fired heaters, going no-idle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, stand-alone mobile equipment HVAC. THE HISTORY OF GHGS AND CLIMATE CHANGE In 1896 Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960’s Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Figure 1). In 1988 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgement of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of over 2500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries, and because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998 requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5% from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States)."

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. OVERVIEW Blind drilled shafts are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in the Appalachian coalfields, as a secondary and sometimes primary means of ventilation. The reasons for the rebirth of the blind shaft are mainly due to it's economics, timeliness, safety characteristics and inherent independence from underground operations. Historically blind drilling has been used to a limited degree in hard rock and tunneling ventilation. With the recent advances in cutters, bit design, equipment and lining systems, particularly in the Appalachian coalfields, blind drilled shafts are once again the shaft construction technique of choice to the educated ventilation specialist. [ ] HISTORY OF BLIND DRILLING Blind drilling has it's roots in numerous places, including the Nevada Test site, the coalfields of Appalachia and Germany along with the uranium mines of Arizona. Early technology was developed using a variety of equipment mainly of oilfield origin with oilfield drillers entering the industry on a project basis only to "pull in their horns" and return to the oil patch. Shafts completed by oilfield equipment range from the shallow 5' and 6' lined shafts on the Nevada test site to two (2) 10' lined, 730' deep shafts in Alberta for heavy oil development. Several of these shafts were completed to extraordinary depths with the record being a 90" diameter, 6,150' deep shaft being completed in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska in 1969. EQUIPMENT Oilfield equipment is still being used on the Nevada test site but elsewhere specialized blind hole equipment has been developed to enhance the efficiency of particular applications. Where steel liners are required the A-leg derrick with a simple hoist and rotary system is used. The largest user of this type equipment in the world is the former USSR where blind drilling for mine ventilation is the norm. On applications where trip time and cutter changeout are a priority, top drive hydraulic rigs have been developed which are highly automated, efficient and mobile. These rigs are particularly well suited for tunneling applications where shafts are shallow and sites are usually tight.

In Toyoha mine near Sapporo, the ground temperature is very high, perhaps due to inflow of hot mineral water, the origin of which may be rock masses intruded by the igneous activity in the Tertiary period. The rock masses are found about 2 km east of the mine, their temperature being estimated at from 770 to 870 K at a depth of 3 km. In this mine several veins bearing zinc and lead ores have been mined down to the depth of 300 m from the level of the main entry, of which altitude is 551 m above the sea level. Formerly no attempt was made at development of the deeper part of the mine than the 350 m level from the main entry. Let us indicate hereafter the levels in this mine in such a way that the level 300 m deep from the main entry is denoted as 300 mL. Since 1974, however, the 450 mL of Tajima vein has been developed by deepening No. 5 Shaft to, and by driving drifts in the level. Much hot mineral water has been flowing into the drifts from rock. After twenty-eight months from the beginning of development, the total length of excavation amounted to about 1300 m. The success in development so far may be attributed to cooling rock and air with chilled water and to adopting heat-resisting explosives and detonators. This cooling costed very much and for further development in this level a more effective and economical cooling is desired if possible. To obtain fundamental data for designing an economical cooling, the authors investigated, as a preliminary study, the heat balance in the main drift of 450 mL, by measuring the temperatures of air, rock, hot mineral water, the rates of flow of air and water and so on, in August 1976. They are now carrying out continual measurements of the variations in rock temperature, air temperature and humidity with time. The present paper describes the details of the preliminary study.

"Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

MFIRE, the mine-fire simulation program of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines. MFIRE has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. It is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence, such as changes in ventilation parameters; external influences, such as changes in temperature; and internal influences, such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the former U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated Fortran programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic-link library. However, the MFIRE 3.0 release included no change or improvement to the fire-modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire-modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of the t-squared fire as a new fire-source model and the ability to include available heat-release-rate versus time data, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor-belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke-rollback phenomena. All of the improvements discussed in this paper will be included in MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

The understanding of coal mine roof lithology is a critical component in the determination of engineering solutions for roof control. Coreholes were the first technology available to determine lithology of the roof in reserve areas, but coreholes are typically drilled 500–2,500 ft apart due to their cost and sometimes reach more than $125,000 dollars per hole, depending on mine conditions. The next method developed to bridge this gap was the fiber-optic scope which is utilized in the roof at the faces of underground development. High-end fiber-optic scopes can also be costly (20,000–40,000 dollars) but are more affordable than drilling a corehole, and the information can be processed immediately to make quick roof support determinations. The fiberscope can be operated wherever a roof bolter can drill a hole, and there are no restrictions related to property owners, proximity to streams, elevation changes, etc. The latest borescoping method utilized by mining companies is the use of videoscopes. Videoscopes and all borescopes in general are limited by the lengths of the scope and the length of the borehole drilled in the mine. Videoscopes have the advantage of being able to record video while examining the roof lithology. The information can be recorded quickly underground and then be examined on the surface which allows anyone to capture the video so that a geologist can make lithology descriptions without ever going underground. In the past, videoscopes had limited resolution, a short battery life, were fragile and were relatively costly. As technology progresses, videoscopes have become more affordable, have increased battery life, and offer enhanced 1080p resolution. With the broader availability of affordable videoscopes, videoscopes can be more readily used in various mine environments at every active section underground. This paper will discuss the types of videoscopes available, the features that will aid in lithology description/identification, the deployment methods pertaining to supplemental roof support recommendations, and an advanced methodology to enhance accuracy in understanding roof lithology.

Oklahoma contains extensive resources of high-purity gypsum that were deposited in the Anadarko and Hollis basins during Permian time. The gypsum resources and reserves are estimated to be about 48 billion short tons and a; located in the western portion of the state. Oklahoma is the largest producer of gypsum products in the United States. The Blaine Formation and the Cloud Chief Gypsum contain several beds of minable thickness. Four stratigraphic units in the Blaine Formation are quarried in Oklahoma. The Shimer, Nescatunga, and Medicine Lodge Members are quarried in northwest Oklahoma. The Van Vacter Member, consisting of three gypsum beds, is quarried in southwest Oklahoma. The Cloud Chief Gypsum is quarried in the west-central part of the state. The gently dipping gypsum in the Blaine Formation generally crops out along low escarpments and is covered in the downdip direction by increasing overburden, consisting of sand, shale, and/or dolomite. Anhydrite occurs in the downdip direction under the thicker overburden. The Cloud Chief Gypsum crops out as hills, which are eroded remnants of a more widespread, massive sulfate unit. All of the gypsum produced in Oklahoma is extracted using quarrying methods. A variety of products are made from gypsum quarried in Oklahoma. The products are manufactured from uncalcined, calcined, and deadburned gypsum. Products vary from raw, ground gypsum used for agriculture, to high-value-added industrial plasters, cements, and fillers produced from calcined gypsum. A sampling of the many products manufactured from Oklahoma gypsumincludes: (1) agricultural-soil amendment; carrier for insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; calcium supplement in animal feeds; (2) gypsum wallboard-common, fire-resistant, and water-resistant varieties; (3) industrialgypsum plasters-art and casting, pottery and ceramic, molding and tooling, crayons, wall patching; (4) industrial gypsum cements-oil-well cement, high-strength statuary, high-strength tooling, fiber-reinforced architectural, road and bridge repair; (5) food and pharmaceutical-filler and binder in aspirin and other medicines, yeast activator in brewing of beer, moisture absorbent in bread and pizza dough; and (6)portland-cement retarder-ground with clinker to control setting time.

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some 2,000 years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today, more mineral commodities are mined in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions. Old industries are generally considered stodgy with mature and stagnant technologies. Costs tend not to decline as in newer industries, and may even increase with real wages. Costs are particularly expected to rise in the case of mining as the best mineral deposits are depleted. Thus, mining is often thought of as a sunset industry, destined to decline over time as the resource base is depleted. These perceptions have several important implications. They argue against economic policies that rely too heavily on mining and mineral processing to foster growth and development. The best and the brightest young people, along with society's other valuable resources, should be encouraged to enter newer industries. There the technological opportunities and the prospects for growth are more promising. These perceptions also suggest that the ability to compete in the mining industry depends largely on the quality of a company's or country's mineral deposits. Mining will take place first in countries with the lowest-cost deposits. Once these are exhausted, mining will shift to countries with the next best deposits. From time to time, new discoveries may also produce a shift in the location of mining, [ ] and may even for a time keep the costs and prices of mineral products from rising. Over the longer term, however, rising costs and prices are inevitable, as the world is forced to exploit poorer mineral deposits.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

"Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in modern mining management. However, the concept is not culturally neutral because it is based on Christian, Western values. These values can be very different from traditional values in emerging mining countries like Thailand, where Buddhist values are dominant. When applying the concept of sustainable development, these differences should be taken into account. Different values imply different interpretations of ‘good mining’. They have a significant impact on how mining operations are evaluated, perceived, operated and managed. This paper attempts to integrate Buddhist principles with approaches of the sustainable development concept. When local values are appreciated and maintained, mining companies and their external stakeholders can identify objectives and approaches that match with their own values and contexts. Practices based on this integrated ethic can help to promote sustainable mining and to minimize communication risks for enterprises in mining countries like Thailand. INTRODUCTION The objective of this paper is to integrate Buddhist principles to the application of sustainable development concept to mining activities. The structure of this paper is divided into four parts. An introduction provides basic information about Thailand, its mining industry and the role of Buddhism on the past development. The second part compares the differences between the sustainable mining framework and the implications of Buddhist principles on mining. In the third part, the core Buddhist teachings are integrated into the sustainable mining framework. This is followed by conclusions in the last part. THAILAND, BUDDHISM, AND MINING Thailand is a constitutional monarchy state in Southeastern Asia with a population size of around 65 million [1]. Its GDP in 2013 was 391 billion USD [2], predominantly deriving from manufacturing (38%), trade, transport and communication (24%), agriculture (8%) and mining and construction (4%). Still the largest part of the Thai workforce (39%) is working in the agricultural sector. The remaining part of the workforce is equally distributed across services, manufacturing, and mining and construction sectors. [3]"

"The United States coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history and regulatory impact. Trends since 1994Each year, U.S. coal mines are required to submit data on a variety of categories to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data include administrative records, production values and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the figures included in this article. There are several items to note regarding this data:1. The EIA reports from 2016 and 2017 were not released at the time of writing this report.2. The MSHA data set is actively maintained as information is provided. This means the data for 2016 is from June 27, 2016 and data for 2017 is from Aug 24, 2017. All other points represent the end of-year values.3. The following report details the successful construction of Contract 2A of the Three Rivers Water Quality Management Program, Intrenchment Creek Combined Sewer Overflow Conveyance System, in DeKalb County for the City of Atlanta, Georgia. The contract required construction of approximately 2878 m (9443 ft) of tunnel bored to an initial diameter of 7.95 m (26 ft 1 in), with provisions to concrete line those portions designated by the engineer to a finished internal diameter of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in). Flanking the tunnel are two shafts. The upstream shaft was excavated to a nominal diameter of 4.87 m (16 ft) to accommodate a finished internal diameter of 3.66 m (12 ft). This shaft required a transition boot fully concrete lined to final dimensions of 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) wide, 13.72 m (45 ft) long, and varying in height from 6.91 m (22 ft 8 in) to 12.80 m (42 ft). Associated work necessary to complete the contractual obligations included installation of 22.86 m (75 ft) of cut-and-cover box culvert, 484 m (1589 ft) of open-cut sewer installation in sizes ranging from 0.30 m (12 in) to 1.68 m (5 ft 6 in), one river crossing, 137.46 m (451 ft) of monolithic concrete trapezoidal channel, and installation of 19125 cu m (25000 cu yd) of select fill material compacted and graded to finished contours. The downstream shaft was excavated to a minimum diameter of 12.04 m (39 ft 6 in) and concrete lined to a finished internal diameter of 10.67 m (35 ft). Requirements here included installation of a complete pumping station with all mechanical, electrical, and structural elements necessary for dewatering the tunnel through the controlled use of four 250 hp submersible pumps discharging into the facilities of the Intrenchment Creek Water Pollution Plant. Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the con¬ventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within the U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oil-or bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If you don't know a gauss from a grasshopper, you may be better off than you, think, particularly if you're an ore dressing engineer charged with the responsibility of selecting magnetic equipment for minerals separation and beneficiation. Gauss is a unit of measure for a magnetic field. It indicates the number of imaginary lines of force per square centimeter or per square inch radiating from a magnet. In discussing the strength characteristics of a magnet, we have come to speak of a magnetic field of 800 gauss, for example, meaning 800 lines of force per square centimeter. Gauss became the standard for selecting drum type separators many years ago under an arbitrary set of circumstances. The standard has continued to this day even though magnetics applications engineers have long considered it inadequate. The configurations of the older gauss meter were such that the most accurate and convenient readings on a drum type separator could be made at distances greater than one inch. So, an arbitrary distance of two inches was established and that two inches became the standard. Since then, it has become commonplace to specify magnetic strengths for drum separators according to average gauss readings at two inches; for example 500 gauss average at two inches, 750 gauss average at two inches and so on, even though gauss readings at two inches have much less to do with the separating and beneficiating function of a given application than was formerly believed. The standard was adopted as a means of gauging the strengths of electromagnetic drum type separators, for they were the only ones around at the time. These machines were usually designed with no magnetic considerations other than that the material to be separated should be agitated vigorously and the magnetic fields should be deep and strong. Drums built this way performed well enough, so it seemed logical to measure their magnetic strengths. Hence, gauss at two inches. Now, new improvements in magnetic techniques have made average gauss measurements at 2 inches positively obsolete.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese
