After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.

GENERAL Tunneling by hand digging is as old as the history of humans. Mechanized tunneling did not begin to replace manual methods until around the beginning of the 19th century(Brunel patent, 1818). It brought with it a higher degree of safety for the workers and a much higher rate of boring. But for any kind of tunneling, an accurate and feasible method of survey must be accomplished during mining. That means, that for each tunnel project the most efficient survey method must be devised. The method to be defined depends on the spatial curve, diameter, speed of tunneling method, purpose of tunnel and contractual accuracy. The final accuracy of a finished tunnel is heavily dependent upon three critical elements: 1. Quality of the above ground survey 2. Tunnel traverse and directional transfer from above ground 3. Guidance for the mining job. Combining The Survey And The Guidance System Since the guidance system (GS) is one of the critical factors in the determination of the tunnel final accuracy, it is necessary to analyze how the directional control and tunnel traverse measurements can be effectively integrated into a GS. Any guidance system, whether manual or high technology, must continually detect and compensate for movement of its theodoliteor laser station standpoint. Movement beyond a preset allowable amount must generate a warning or error message to the user. Additionally, optical refraction can interfere with the results. Refraction will have an effect on any kind of optical GS. Therefore, careful selection of target and standpoint locations can minimize, but not completely eliminate, the influence of refraction. Some GS technologies, such as Gyro-based systems, are immune to the effects of refraction, but have other, methodical errors which will be described later in this paper. ME?s Arizona Conference was held at the Hilton El Conquistador resort in Tucson on Dec. 2 and 3, 2007. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The 2007 meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecturer and more than 25 technical papers that were presented in seven sessions. The sessions included environmental, geology, safety, metallurgy, mining, new projects and a special session on Mexico. Topics covered included mine closure, sustainable mining, exploration methods, health and safety issues, mining equipment and drilling. Much of the discussion at the conference concerned major new developments in the region?s copper mining industry. For example, Freeport-McMoRan?s new Safford Mine and BHP Billiton?s Pinto Valley restart were the topics of technical presentations. There was also much discussion among the attendees on the current and future price of copper, community relations, education issues and recruitment concerns. At the time of the conference, the price of copper hovered around $3.30/lb, up considerably from the 61 cents/lb in late 2001, when the industry was being challenged by world market conditions and a weakened domestic economy. Since then, strong demand from China helped push copper prices to record levels that at one time reached as high as $4/lb. The general consensus among the attendees is that the current price of around $3.30/lb will continue through 2008. Most attendees also expect increased corporate investments in the industry to continue. Copper mining in Arizona has been a major industry since the 1800s. In 2007, Arizona was the leading copper-producing state in the United States and produced more than $5 billion worth of copper. The copper mining industry in Arizona also produces byproduct gold, silver and molybdenum. Arizona is the second largest molybdenum producer in the United States.

Sulphuric acid leaching is the most common method of recovering uranium from its ores and in the following discussion various alternative low cost routes are investigated for recovering uranium from milled ore acid leach liquors. Historically uranium has been recovered from dilute impure leach liquors by packed bed ion exchange (IX), solvent extraction (SX) or a combination of both. All three process routes as commonly practised require complete separation of leached solids and liquids, as well as extensive solids washing in order to reduce soluble uranium losses to a minimum. Separation and washing are costly and often require equipment covering large areas of land. The size and capital cost of the post leach solids washing operation is controlled by the ease of washing the slimes fraction of the ore and the key to the problem of cost reduction, as many others have realised, lies in the ability to separate the slimes fraction of the ore from the more easily washed sands, to wash the sands in low cost equipment and to recover uranium from the slimes stream. Sands and slimes are usually defined in this context as the material larger than, and smaller than, 325 mesh (44 microns). The proposed flowsheets which minimise solid-liquid separation and washing have usually incorporated ion exchange (Refs 1,2,3), and resin in pulp is in fact practised in several mills in the USA (Ref 1). The resins used in these flowsheets and [cranium] recovery throughout the world have been strong base resins which load rapidly and are moderately selective for the uranyl sulphate complex anion over the range of pH which is conveniently achieved in an acid leach operation. Strong base resins are, however, not as selective as weak base resins and weak base liquid reagents owing to the adsorption of competing anions, some of which find their way into the product while others act as resins poisons. Ion exchange using strong base resins must therefore be followed by a more selective weak base SX purification step if pure yellow cake is required.

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.

The trend toward development of large low grade ore bodies has accelerated in recent years. It has been estimated within the copper industry that "porphyry" type deposits will provide the bulk of copper production during the next 30 years. It is further estimated that in these deposits the average ore grade by the year 2000 will be 0.25% copper (1). Many of the new porphyry copper discoveries are of such extremely low grade that they are particularly sensitive to small fluctuations in cost variables and copper prices. Because haulage constitutes a major item of surface mining expense, the capability to transport large tonnages of material at increasingly lower unit costs is vital to the profitable operation of many of these mines. High capacity conveyor belts appear to have considerable promise in this area. The heaviest use of high tonnage conveyors has been in the brown coal industry in Germany. In the past 20 years several such installations have proven successful. In addition to the German installations, several other successful systems have been put into operation. Some examples are: The Oroville Dam project in the United States; the tar sand operation in Northwest Canada; the pre-mine stripping and mining of the Twin Buttes Mine in the United States; the Kursk Magnetite 'dine in the U.S.S.R.; and the Nchanga Copper Mine in Zambia. Most of the systems mentioned are handling alluvial material consisting mainly of fines. The noteworthy point regarding these installations is their high continuous capacity. One of the largest lignite mines in the world is at Fortuna, Germany, where over 15,700 tons (15,250mt) per hour of overburden is transported on an 87 inch (221cm) wide belt running, at over 1000 feet (305m) per minute.(2). Another example is a 20,000 ton (18,150mt) per hour system for loading iron ore into barges on the Great Lakes (3).

As a result of feasibility studies made in 1975 a 3-0 seismic reflection survey was shot over part of the Veendam salt pillow during 1978-1979. The Zechstein salt pillow, located in the northeast of the Netherlands near the town of veendam, occurs at a depth of 1400 m and contains three carnallite rich horizons over an interval of 300 m below top salt. MgCl2 brines are produced from these layers as feedstock for a magnesia plant, which starts up in 1981. Prior to the acquisition of the seismic data four wells had been drilled. The thickness of the carnallitite layers encountered in these wells varied between 50 and 125 meters. In view of these variations it was necessary to obtain a reliable isopach of the different layers. The 3-0 seismic survey covered an area of ± 4x4 km with a sampling interval of 20 m in all directions. The data was recorded it an area array using a 120 channel instrument. Final presentation of the data was in the form of 3-0 migrated acoustic impedance cross sections. The quality and resolution of the seismic data allowed reliable structural and isopach mans to be made. It was shown that the carnallitite layers are continuous over the area surveyed, whilst local thickening is "fault" related. Having this information brine production locations could be choosen in the thicker parts, allowing maximisation of production potential whilst avoiding faults and fulfilling mining regulations. A subsequent benefit of this approach is the possibility of using the seismic data to predict ore grade. Using the available wells as calibration points the acoustic impedance response of the seismic at the well was matched to the ore grade found. From these points a synthetic section was made with varying ore grades. Pre¬liminary results are encouraging and the liability of this predictive tool will be evaluated in the light of future drilling.

The U.S. Geological Survey has for many years been flying and compiling aeromagnetic surveys. The aim is complete coverage of the United States, about half of which is presently done. Colored aeromagnetic maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 are published as the states are completed; Minnesota and Colorado have been published. Michigan, Iowa, Nevada, Utah, Maryland and Virginia are presently being processed. Some of the most spectacular data collected to date is from the Piedmont of the Eastern United States. I am going to discuss a preliminary aeromagnetic map of the Piedmont region between New York and North Carolina, where coverage is nearly complete. This map has been compiled from many surveys. Flight spacing over Piedmont rocks is 1/4 to 1 mile with flight elevation of 500 feet above ground. The spacing over the Virginia Coastal Plain and Valley and Ridge regions is wider at 2 - 3 miles. Much of the data in Virginia has been produced by the Virginia Division of Mineral Resources. The map is colored on a spectral color scheme with red for the higher intensities and violet the low intensities. Each color represents a 100 gamma interval. Some of the highest intensities are beyond the range of the 13 colors - these are left white. It is necessary, of course, to remove first, the Earth's main magnetic field. The Geological Survey uses the International Geomagnetic Reference Field or IGRF (Fabiano and Peddie, 1969). The use of color in aeromagnetic maps is not new, but then not common. We have found that colored aeromagnetic contour maps are more useful by far than the uncolored versions because they allow the user to instantly compare intensities in widely separated areas and visualize long wavelength anomalies even when numerous short wavelength anomalies' are superimposed. One tends to see only steep gradients on uncolored aeromagnetic maps, the broad anomalies being quite invisible. We feel that colored maps take the place of various mathematically derived maps such as second derivative or averaged maps.

Reliable stress measurement using hollow inclusion gauges and monitoring stress change using borehole stress meters and borehole deformation gauges in anisotropic rock remains a challenge for the rock mechanics community. In this regard, the complex variable method advanced in 1983 for deducing stress in anisotropic rock is flawed and software is privileged. Fortunately, advances in computer hardware and software now enable fast, reliable reduction of hollow inclusion stress measurement data for determining stress in anisotropic rock. Monitoring stress change in anisotropic rock poses a different challenge but is also subject to numerical analysis. Stress measurement using a hollow inclusion (HI) gauge such as the triaxial Australian HI is done in four steps: 1) drilling a measurement hole, 2) installation of an HI, 3) stress relief of the HI by overcoring, and 4) data reduction. The last step, data reduction, is the focus of this work. The process is well-known in linearly elastic, isotropic rock (Worotniki and Walton 1976, Duncan Fama and Pender 1980). However, in case of linearly elastic, anisotropic rock the requisite technology is not readily available. This situation is somewhat surprising because anisotropy is more often the rule rather than the exception, especially in the neighborhood of ore bodies. Rahn (1984) has pointed out the potential for significant errors with neglect of anisotropy and the adverse consequences for engineering design. Amadei (1984) has also pointed out the potential for errors with neglect of anisotropic rock properties in stress measurement. Worotniki (1993) cites other studies that indicate potential for serious errors when doing measurements in anisotropic rock. In both theoretical cases (isotropy and anisotropy), data reduction is essentially a composite of solutions to boundary value problems in linear elasticity. In the finite element approach, the analysis is a simulation of gauge hole drilling, installation and overcoring. Two important advantages with the finite element approach are a more faithful representation of the conditions of HI stress measurement than approximated in theory and the capability for handling rock whether isotropic, transversely isotropic or fully anisotropic

Commercial development of the mineral resources of southwestern Missouri began about 1850 and spread into southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, forming the Tri-State Mining District with Joplin as the urban center (fig. 1). The value of the Tri-State mineral production from 1850 to 1950 exceeded one billion dollars, and until 1945 the region was the world's leading producer of lead and zinc concentrates, accounting for one-half of the zinc and one-tenth of the lead produced in the United States (Gibson, 1972 1). By 1950 most of the rich ores had been extracted, and mining and milling operations declined during the 1950's and ceased in the 1960's. The sulfide minerals, mainly galena and sphalorite, were mined from cherty limestones at depths of 25 to 75 m (meters). Crude ores were brought from the mines to the surface where they were milled into lead and zinc concentrates. , Barren rock was discarded in piles while the ore-bearing rock was crushed and ground into fine gravel. The minerals were separated from the rock by a jigging process and the tailings were skimmed off and discarded in large piles. Ground-water flooding of the mines was controlled by constant pumping. When pumpage declined in the 1950's and 1960's tile abandoned mine drifts and shafts filled with water. At present (1977) numerous tailings piles and flooded mines remain as visible evidence of the mining era and as a threat to the quality of ground and surface waters of the area. In 1976 the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Ozark Gateway Council of Governments made a study of the effects of the mines and tailings piles on water quality in the Missouri part of the Tri-State District. The study area covers approximately the southwestern quarter of Jasper County, an area of about 725 km2 (square kilometers), and is bounded by long 94 o 15' w.' and the Missouri-Kansas state line, and lat 37 o 15 N., and the Jasper-Newton County line.

The well-known method of C. Schlumberger, Mise a la masse, has become a popular method again in ore exploration in Norway after many years of dominance by EM methods. The principle of the method is to place a current electrode within a conducting ore body and remove the other electrode to a great distance. (Figure 1). Often it is convenient to place a return electrode on each side of the area explored. The method is best suited for ores that have a conductivity contrast, relative to the host rock, of several orders of magnitude. The potential drop within the ore itself may then be neglected and the ore contact against the rock may be regarded as an equipotential surface. One may say that the ore body is electrically charged. Therefore, in Norway the method is now most often called the Charged Potential Method (abbreviated CP). The most usual way to present data obtained by CP, is to draw equipotential lines based on potential values measured in profiles on the surface. Such a potential map gives an immediate picture of the outcrop of the ore and also indicates disturbing conductors in the neighborhood. It may also be useful to look at the potential profile and its horizontal gradient along the strike axis of the potential map. These profiles may give information about the strike length of the conductor. Figure 2 shows the theoretical profiles of potential and gradient along the axis of the potential picture on the surface over a charged line plunging 15 degrees. It may be seen that the maximum of the gradient curve clearly indicates the lower end of the conductor. Figure 3 shows the corresponding pro- files over a charged line plunging 45 degrees. In this case, it is not possible to see an indication on the curve of the lower end. Only curve fitting could help interpretation in this case.

Between 1996 and 1999, a high-performance Robbins TBM [235-282] excavated a 5 mile long, 23´2? wide, and ~700´ deep tunnel through the subsurface of southwestern Queens. Low penetration rates (~6´/hr [actual] vs. ~9´/hr [anticipated])resulted from changed rock mass conditions mostly attributable to high-grade metamorphism of the rocks. Over a three-year period, as-built circumferential geologic mapping (scale 1?=10´) and digital imagery of the tunnel, fracture and fault analysis, structural, lithologic, and petrographic studies have shown that the rocks of the Queens Tunnel consist of orthogneiss of mesocratic, leucocratic, and mafic composition. These metaigneous rocks developed coarse-grained fabrics during Grenvillian (~1.0 Ga) granulite facies metamorphism, and retained their nearly anhydrous, poorly foliated character during subsequent high-grade Ordoviciande formation. Lacking a penetrative foliation, the coarse granoblastic rock texture and extraordinary garnet content (up to 50% in some zones) together proved animpediment to efficient chip production and resulted in bimodal production of blocks and excessive fines. TBM excavation of the Queens Tunnel was also hindered by geological conditions that included unexpected lithology and rock fabric orientation, a zone of crosscutting hypabyssal rhyodacite dikes, and unanticipated extent of brittle faults. The dikes and brittle faults produced blocky ground conditions and a collapsing face condition that produced cutter damage and decreased utilization. Such fundamental textural, mineralogic, and lithologic control over hard-rock TBM penetration can be predicted by careful pre-bid geological analysis. To determine the causes of lower than anticipated TBM performance, a detailed investigation was carried out that included analysis of operational data from the TBM data logger and an extensive laboratory test program on cores retrieved from tunnel walls. Integrated laboratory testing included punch, point load, tensile strength, Cerchar abrasivity, and linear cutting tests, independent petrographic analysis and machine performance analysis. These allied investigations have provided quantification that the rock mass exhibited an unusually high degree of toughness and rock directional properties and established geological causes for decreased TBM penetration rates.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

"A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. Slimes, especially clays, are detrimental to several processes in the Mining Industry. The efficiency of classification, clarification, gravity separation, and flotation decreases significantly in the presence of slimes and clays. This problem is particularly critical in the Phosphate and Sulfide Industries. To reduce the effect of slimes in mineral processing, several desliming techniques and chemical additives are used, such as sodium silicate, sodium carbonate, sulfuric acid, tripolyphosphate, hexameta phosphate, etc. Lately, the Mining Chemical industry has shift to more “Specifically Developed” reagents that offer the most efficient and cost effective performance, mainly using organic polymers. For this purpose, the Mining Chemical Industry needs to understand the crystal chemistry of minerals, the chemistry of the aqueous media, the interactions in solids-aqueous-gas interfaces, the rheology of the system, and the plant operation conditions and parameters. This paper describes the use of surface chemistry fundamentals on the design of an organic polymer capable of modifying the rheology of clayish slurries of a phosphate ore. The change in the rheological characteristics of the clayish phosphate slurries allow fine ore particles to settle faster by reducing the slurry viscosity. Thus, abetter separation of the ore from the slimes is possible using gravitational or centrifugal forces. As examples of the application of this reagent, industrial and pilot plant tests on desliming using tanks and hydrocyclones are presented. These tests showed the reduction of 32%-36% in ore losses for different phosphate ores during desliming operations, and the increase of cyclones desliming efficiency to 80%. Tests were also carried out to improve the rejection of unwanted iron bearing slimes in phosphate feed. These tests demonstrated that it is possible to reduce by 0.25%-1.23% Fe2O3content in the flotation feed product. As a result, significant economical benefits are observed with the use of this new technology without any adverse effect on down stream operations, such as clay settling or phosphate flotation.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.
