The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

Many processes in the hydrometallurgical and chemical industries require the separation of dissolved material from suspended solids. Counter current decantation (CCD) with thickeners is one of the methods generally used. The process engineer needs a quick and accurate CCD calculation method. Several theoretical 1-12 CCD calculation methods are available in the literature . The simultaneous 1, 2 equation method for a complex circuit as used would take too long to solve the problems. Approximate equation method1 is not accurate and is for simple cases only. A shortcut method developed by Counselman3 contains no mathematical equation, and thus is not suitable for computer programming. Based on Counselman's method, Woody4 derived two simple equations in terms of percent soluble loss for two typical examples. Scandrett5 included a term for mixing in his formulas. This mixing efficiency was defined by Murphree6. Another method which depends on making volume calculations instead of using weights is presented by Mastin8 and Cahalan9. None of these methods is related to dissolution and pre¬cipitation reactions. Chen 10,11 demonstrated his methods for counter current leaching. His results are calculated from the general solution of a derived linear difference equation for constant underflow, and from the solution of a derived non-linear Ricatti difference equation for variable underflow. This paper concerns derivation of a general equation for CCD washing with provisions for adding and withdrawing the streams, and for leaching (dissolution) or precipitation reactions. Hard-rock phosphate was formerly the chief source of all phosphate in Florida. Its mining began as early as 1883 or 1884, reached a peak level in 1907 and ceased in 1966. Production began and ended in the Dunnellon area (Marion County). Nearly all the hard-rock was exported because its P205 value per unit weight is generally more concentrated than that of other phosphate rock. Maximum production, achieved in 1907, was greater than 600,000 tons; the total value for that year was more than $4,000,000. The Florida hard-rock phosphate, considered to be of middle Miocene to early Pliocene age, has an intermittent narrow, linear northwest-southeast trend. The Ocala uplift controls the phosphate distribution for more than 200 miles. Other known, isolated hard-rock areas appear to be related to minor folds on the Ocala uplift. The hard-rock phosphate deposits are a heterogeneous mass of sedimentary fluorapatite, chert and quartz with textures ranging in size from clay to boulder, and in thickness from 0 to 40 feet. Phosphate compounds, principally fertilizers, have been in oversupply since before 1968, but by the middle 1970's some experts forecast a supply-demand balance. A brighter future for exploitation of Florida hard-rock phosphate depends upon one or more of these factors: 1) depletion of present premium grades (74 percent BPL and above) of land-pebble; 2) cheaper electric power from nuclear generators for profitable electric furnace operation; 3) supply and price of sulfur; 4) manageable rail-water transportation costs; 5) development of less costly mining and separation methods; and 6) minimum competition from high-grade foreign phosphate.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P's project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569' of tunnel mined to a 35' diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529' mined to a 12' diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30' finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller's Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

In order to comply with time limitations imposed by this symposium, a very narrow but nonetheless interesting segment of the market has been chosen for discussion of the preparation of a tailor-made product to meet a specific need, and in view of the fact that the barite market is one of the oldest and one of the broadest non-metallic mineral markets in the world, it is necessary that we place this in perspective. Of a recent world annual production; (i.e., 1966 figures released last year in MINERALS YEARBOOK), of some four million tons, the United States consumed over 1/2 million tons, of which approximately 950,000 tons were produced domestically and approximately 700,000 tons were imported. Of this total, something approaching 90% was used for drilling-mud weighting, and of the balance, all but about 60,000 tone is consumed in the production of glass, barium chemicals, aggregates, and other minor uses; thus we are really taking a look at a very minute, however important, and very selective, portion of the total barite-market. The real meat of this paper, after eliminating all irrelevant uses of barite, and delineating the area of discussion, resolves itself into the approach to a favorable marketing area and a specific attack on that area. Cost, to the user, has been, patently, a function of distance, as the basic price of barite has varied very little over the years until recently, and freight rates have been the governing factor. Conversely, the seller of barytes must make concession in the plant price to compensate for distance, if he is to successfully compete.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

The story of America&apos;s progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill&apos;s mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). From 1999 through 2008, groundfall events resulted in 75 fatalities, 5,941 injuries and 13,774 noninjury roof falls in U.S. underground coal mines, according to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A comprehensive analysis of these events was conducted to better understand where and why these incidents occurred. The first segment of the study used the MSHA database to evaluate groundfall injury rate trends related to mining method, year, locality, seam thickness, mine size, coalbeds and seasonal effects. In the past decade, roof fall injury rates have dropped 50%, but rib fall injury rates have remained constant. Room-and-pillar mines had a roof fall injury rate that was nearly 2.5 times the longwall rate. High groundfall rates occurred in the Illinois Basin, a finding that correlates with other studies that have shown that roof rock in the Illinois Basin is weaker than that in the central Appalachian coalfields. Finally, noninjury roof fall rates in the eastern and central United States were found to be 50% higher from July through September, possibly because of the changes in humidity levels that may cause shale mine roofs to deteriorate. The second segment of the study evaluated the root causes of failure by reviewing all MSHA groundfall fatality reports for 1999-2008. Pillar recovery was the leading cause of groundfall fatalities (19%), followed by rib falls, roof skin falls and traveling under unsupported roof (16% each). Defining prominent ground control incident trends and hazards will identify areas where additional study is needed and where innovative solutions need to be developed to reduce these severe occupational hazards.

A study was made to determine those petrographic parameters that are correlative with carbonate-aggregate quality as indicated by the Los Angeles abrasion and absorption tests. Samples collected at 28 sites in northern and eastern Indiana were analyzed petrographically, chiefly for void content, grain size, grain-size variation, grain shape, and grain interlock. Most of the sampled sites are in the belt of Silurian rocks of east-central and north- western Indiana. Though a few sites lie outside this belt, most of these have only a thin Devonian section above the Silurian. Three sites are non-Silurian and are included for comparison. Most of the samples studied are from Middle and Upper Silurian units. Both biohermal and nonbiohermal facies are included. The biohermal rocks are typically dense but vugular, finely crystalline granular dolomite. Nonbiohermal facies are porous, medium to coarsely crystalline, granular dolomite with dolomite rhombs The Los Angeles abrasion losses ranged from 20 to 46 per cent, the rocks in the eastern part of the state showing the higher values. Absorption tests indicate the same general quality trend. Comparison of petrographic studies with Los Angeles abrasion- and absorption-test results indicate the following correlations. (1) As per, cent of voids increases, quality decreases. (2) As average grain size increases, quality decreases. (3) Variations from mean grain size appear to have no effect on the quality. (4) As angularity and roughness of the grains increase, quality increases. (5) As grain-to-grain interlock increases, quality increases. Variations in the calcium-magnesium ratio have no apparent effect on aggregate quality, except as they affect the texture.

During shallow tunneling in an urban environment, deposits or pockets of saturated soil or fractured, weathered rock are often encountered. Under such conditions, special problems with tunnel support, underpinning of structures adjacent to the tunneling, and/or flow of groundwater into the tunnel occur. If the ground conditions are appropriate, i.e., the soil is sandy, silty or fissured, or the rock is weathered or fractured, the solution to these tunneling problems may be chemical stabilization of the ground. Injection stabilization as an aid to tunneling is practiced extensively in Europe and its use is increasing in the U.S. The advantages of this technique over conventional solutions can be substantial in terms of cost and time, especially in mechanized tunnel boring where even a small zone of soft ground can bring the tunneling to a complete halt. In this paper European practice in using chemical ground stabilization for urban tunneling will be reviewed. In contrast to previous papers which have dealt with specific applications (1,5,8,9) this paper will broadly cover the subject, addressing itself to grouting techniques, costs, the reasons for grouting, philosophy of the users towards grouting, design of grouting solutions (or lack thereof) and methods of quality control. Differences with U.S. grouting practice are also noted. The information presented is derived from several visits to Europe, discussions with European and U.S. grouting personnel, and the available literature (2). The author&apos;s most recent European trip was made under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Transportation in conjunction with a research study being performed at Stanford University; a detailed report of this visit is available in reference (6).

INTRODUCTION The principle line of the Caracas Metro is located generally along the most important east-west traffic corridor of the city from the yards and shops in Propatria at the western extremity to Petare, and eventually beyond to Palo Verde at the eastern end, a route distance of 21 kilometers. There will be 23 stations along the alignment, underground, at grade and elevated, and the line is forecast to handle 1,209,100 passengers daily by the year 2000 with a travel time of 29 minutes between Propatria and Petare. This principle line was divided into three sections for design purposes: Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and Chacaito-Petare, Section III. These sections were further subdivided into subsections for construction purposes. The Venezuelan Government, through its Caracas Metro Office in the Ministry of Public Works, awarded design contracts in sections to PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF-TUDOR-BECHTEL for Propatria-Fuerzas Armadas, Section I, OCOIDESA-GRID-APM for Fuerzas Armadas-Chacaito, Section II and OCOIDESA GRID-APM for Chacaito-Petare, Section III. Construction contracts were awarded by international bidding and work is now underway, by joint venture organizations of Venezuelan and foreign firms. The first two sections are under the administration of a company of Engineer/Inspectors in each section. The construction supervision of contracts in the first section is under the administration of the Venezuelan firm, Gómez-Celis-Herrera, (GCH) Engineers, acting under contract to the new C.A. Metro de Caracas that replaced &apos; the former Office of the Metro. A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

After a century of variable government-supplied housing on their cold, windswept lands, and facing extremely limited natural resources and no timber, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has launched a study into alternative housing approaches for their people. Considering that they have little more than the soil and limited river aggregates under their feet, the Tribe has elected to consider adobe and earthen-wall construction. Earthen construction is no stranger to the Sioux lands. Smaller tribes, including the Mandan, Arikira, and Hidatsa, lived here among the Sioux in earthlodges for centuries. Such earthlodge structures were not unlike the Southwestern jacal style-a framework of upright branches and branches covered with mud-employed by the Anasazi about A.D. 700-900. Indeed, the Sioux people themselves evolved from earlier earthlodge dwellers. Indigenous peoples in New Mexico, Arizona, and neighboring Mexico have used earthen-wall housing for many centuries, reinforcing Sioux observations that this is today an earth-friendly, cost-effective, and practical approach. The Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge Sioux Reservations also recently have conducted studies on earthen- wall construction. This paper describes the search for and evaluation of potential raw-material resources for earthen-wall/adobe construction on the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota. Significant resources of clay/silt materials (8 million tons in the Striped Cloud clay bed) suitable as adobe binders and sand-and-gravel aggregate (2.5 million tons) that could support earthen/adobe construction have been identified throughout the Fort Yates Flat area on the Reservation. Also addressed is how adobe and rammed-earth construction could add to the diversity of reservation construction and address future Tribal housing and other building needs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated leaching of off-grade western United States phosphate deposits using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. A combination of ore grinding followed by sulfuric acid in methanol leaching extracted over 80 pct of the phosphate. This leaching technique significantly limited the dissolution of iron, aluminum, and magnesium impurities and produced a phosphoric acid that was well within the desired limits for these impurities. The dissolution rate of phosphate rock in the sulfuric acid methanol system was significantly slower than the conventional aqueous sulfuric acid dissolution. Initially dissolution of the phosphate particle was controlled by the amount of surface area available to the sulfuric acid reactant. After about an hour of leaching, phosphate dissolution was slowed almost to a stop, limited by the rate of ion diffusion through the calcium sulfate barrier layer surrounding the unreacted phosphate particle. Consequently, the ore was ground below 38-pm to increase the particle surface area available and improve the overall dissolution kinetics and extraction. In addition, the sulfuric acid was slowly metered into the reactor to prevent any excess heat from the mixing of acid with the methanol from simulating the formation of methyl sulfates. The formation of methyl sulfate ultimately lowered the overall phosphate extraction by exhausting the supply of available sulfate ions for the dissolution reaction. Subsequent evaporation of the methanol from the product acid decomposed the methyl sulfates leaving undesirable sulfate ions in the product acid. Slow acid addition to the reactor provided high phosphate extraction and limited the amount of sulfate in the final product acid.

1. TRENDS OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE MECHANICAL DRIVING OF UNDERGROUND EXCAVATIONS IN THE GERMAN COAL MINING INDUSTRY The demand for higher advance in underground excavations led, in the past ten years, to the development and application of various mechanical methods in the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Hence, a modern mine cannot operate anymore without tunneling machines for the driving of horizontal and inclined roads and shaft boring machines for the sinking of shafts. In future, boring operations will assume a high positional value in the mining industry, as the development of cutters has kept pace with the development of machines. In the past ten years, about 40 km of roadways have been bored by tunneling machines in the German coal mining industry, further 140 km will be bored by 1990, part of which are already under contract. The idea was tempting to apply the technology of horizontal tunnel borers also to the sinking of vertical shafts. The underground contractors Deilmann-Haniel GmbH of Dortmund and Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH of Mülheim/Ruhr developed already in 1970, together with Wirth of Erkelenz, a shaft boring machine working without drill pipes, capable of sinking shafts following a pilot borehole, according to the downward reaming method (Fig. 1). In the meantime, two such shaft borers are operating in coal mines with diameters of 4.50 m to 6.50 m. Recently an order was placed for a third Wirth shaft borer for diameters up to 8.50 m. Since 1971 about 3.800 m of open or blind shafts have been sunk by the reaming process (Fig. 2).

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. The amount of information available for characterizing a deposit increases over time due to the continuous acquisition of data during mining. This additional information is collected from different sources, including geologic mapping, production data and infill drilling. Throughout the lifetime of a mining project, the block model and the mining sequence are periodically updated to account for this new data. In general, the acquisition of additional data increases the accuracy of the block model, reduces uncertainty in ore/waste limits and clarifies the optimal mining sequence. There has been extensive research on mine planning, but current techniques do not consider the decrease in uncertainty as additional information becomes available. Conventional paradigms assume either 1) the kriged model is correct and uncertainty due to multiple realizations does not change the mining sequence, or 2) the mining sequence is unrealistically adapted to each realization. A new paradigm is proposed for evaluating minable reserves of surface mining projects, which accounts for the acquisition of additional information in the design of the long term mine plan. Multiple scenarios characterizing the dynamic nature of mining and data collection are created. In the proposed methodology, the performance of the long-term mine plan depends on both mining and data acquisition strategies. Each scenario considers the same extracted volume for the first period, resulting in a set of scenarios that diverge from a common initial period, accounting for how the mine may develop over time as new data are acquired and provide a more realistic evaluation of reserves with an appropriate level of uncertainty. A synthetic example is presented to illustrate the implementation of the methodology and the benefits over conventional paradigms.
