A feasibility seismic refraction and reflection field survey was conducted at the U. S. Borax Company open-pit mine, Boron, California by the writers during the weekend of March 13 and 14, 1976. This field survey was carried out as a preliminary investigation primarily for the purpose of evaluating and establishing the ability of such geophysical techniques to locate and outline the subsurface openings of the old room-and-pillar mining under the present open-pit. The value of such knowledge about the old underground workings is directly related to the safe and economical operation of the open-pit mine for the company. Although mine maps of the old underground workings are available at the mine, the extent of roof and wall cavings and the present condition of the old underground openings are unknown. Owen and Suhler (2) are the first investigators who used electromagnetic methods, Pulse-Echo System, and electric resistivity measurement to solve the problem without success. A few years later, Herzig and Owen (1) attempted to solve the problem with application of earth resistivity measurement method with unfavorable results. The U. S. Borax Company carried out an extensive study for slope failure problems of the open-pit with application of dipmeter measurements. However, the slope stability study was not correlated to the old underground openings lying under the present open-pit (3).

Mandalong Mine was originally planned to operate with panel widths of 250 m and a predicted surface subsidence in excess of 3 m. The consent conditions applied by the NSW government on this mine plan were very tight and, following a change in ownership, were considered by the new operator to present a number of unacceptable business risks An acceptable risk profile for the mine layout restricted surface deformations to less than 500 mm vertical subsidence, less than 7 mm/m tilt, and less than 5 mm/m strain. Empirical subsidence prediction methods indicated that it would be necessary to reduce extraction panel widths of 80 m - an uneconomic option. The application of a number of rock mechanics concepts identified that the local overburden geology could be exploited such that panel widths of up to 175 m could be possible. The 125 m width was selected as a low-risk introduction of this new subsidence prediction method. The extraction of the first 2 longwall panels has demonstrated the validity of the prediction subsidence method and has provided the opportunity to refine the selection of key input parameters. The impact of mining through a zone of thrust faults was successfully predicted. The mine is now planning the introduction of 160 m wide panels, and will review the associated subsidence impacts prior to any further increases in width.

In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

The principle of high-pressure interparticulate comminution has been used very successfully since the mid 1980's for grinding a wide range of different materials. A number of reports about operating experience have already been published. High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) are currently making their debut in the mining industry. Experience is being gained with test machines, particularly for the comminution of hard rock. In the grinding of diamond-bearing ore, (Fig 1) interparticulate comminution has already become the standard for liberating the diamonds from the matrix. The advantages of interparticulate comminution are also recognized for the grinding of concentrates (chrome ore, iron ore). Numerous HPGRs are being used very successfully in this field. A testing plant for first-time industrial grinding of coarse, very hard and highly abrasive copper ore was built at Cyprus Amax's plant in Sieretta, Arizona (Fig. 2). The operating experience gained here showed that the grinding of very hard ores places particularly high mechanical demands on the mill. While the machine itself meets the high availability requirements, the wear-protection system proves to be the most sensitive point. Naturally, the properties of the ore to be ground exert a considerable influence on the lifetime of the grinding rolls. This paper describes the wear mechanisms and the wear­protection systems designed to combat these.

Cerro Vangaurdia Gold Mine is a joint venture between AngloGold (the operator), Perez Companc and Formicruz and is situated in the southern province of Santa Cruz, in Argentina, approximately 2,150 km south of the capital, Buenos Aires. The mine is located in a severe, semi-arid environment with very cold winters and little annual rainfall (200mm). It is an open-pit operation, mining several narrow, shallow epithermal quartz veins with . gold and silver mineralisation. Commissioning of the plant commenced in September 1998 and the first dore bar was poured towards the end of the same month. The nominal capacity of the plant is 55,000 tonnes per month, with a design capacity of 60,000 tonnes per month. Prior to finalising the design, an extensive testwork programme was undertaken at Nova Lima, in Brazil, in which all parts of the process were evaluated together on a pilot-plant scale. The process flowsheet selected at Ce1rn Vanguardia is quite novel, in that it includes milling in cyanide, as well as a cyanide recovery and recycling plant on the tailings section of the treatment plant is included. The cyanide recovery process selected was a version of the acidification - volatilization - reabsorption (AVR) process, known as Cyanisorb™. The selection of the Cyanisorb™ process in the plant design was as a direct consequence of two factors:

Underground mine service water in South Africa is used for dust suppression and cooling the environment as well as the pneumatic rock drills. Although the chilled water is not intended for potable use, it is often used as drinking water by mining personnel. Furthermore, droplets sprayed are liable to be inhaled. The water is recirculated on a continuous basis and is a potential source of infection by intestinal microorganisms or water-borne diseases such as cholera or typhoid. In order to protect the health of the underground workforce it is customary to disinfect the chilled service water, The bacteriological quality of the water is monitored by enumerating total aerobic bacteria (TAB), total coliforms (C C) and Escherichia coli (E Coli). E coli is an indicator of human faeca_l __ - -- contamination, The bacteriological standard specified by the Anglo American Corporation for mine service water is less than 3000 TA B per 100ml, less than 2 CC per ml and the total absence of E Coli. There are several disinfecting agents available for use. Among these are UV irradiation, ozone, chlorine dioxide and compounds that produce hypobromous and hypochlorous acids. Historically, the methods of treatment have been chlorine based and include the use of gaseous chlorine (surface installations only), calcium hypochlorite granules or tablets, chlorinated cyanurate tablets, sodium hypochlorite solutions and hypochlorite produced by electrolysis.

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. Additional details are found in Bourret (1981).

The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has undertaken a $1.2 billion effort to capture and treat combined sewage overflows from various outfalls along the Detroit and Rouge Rivers in Detroit, Michigan. This program is planned to include a 455,000 m3 (120 million gallon) storage and treatment tunnel which will capture overflows from 19 outfalls along the Rouge River. The tunnel is currently in the conceptual design phase, with the bid date planned for mid-year in 2001,and completion planned for August 2005. The total design and construction cost is currently estimated to be approximately $450 million. Current concepts are for the storage and transport tunnel will be 6.1 m (20feet) in finished diameter, with a total alignment length of approximately 12,200 m(40,000 feet). The main tunnel will extend through the Traverse and Antrim Shalerock formations, while approximately 5,500 m (18,000 feet) of various diameter connecting tunnel will extend through both rock and soft ground. The project will include a total of 10 drop shafts, 13 riser shafts, various connecting structures, and a 455,000 m3/day (20 mgd) pumping station. This paper will present a discussion of the design philosophy, subsurface conditions, the various planned components, and the expected design and construction considerations for the proposed Upper Rouge Combined Sewage Overflow Tunnel.

Cobb County, located on the northwest side of Atlanta, GA, is continually growing and, like many other metropolitan areas, it needs to increase the capacity of its waste water system to meet future demand. The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) is the responsible agency for water distribution, waste water collection and treatment in most areas of the county. CCWS, one of the most progressive agencies in the metro-Atlanta area, is addressing its future waste water capacity needs in the southern part of the county with the construction of the South Cobb Tunnel and Pump Station. This project consists of an 8.8-km- (5.5-mile-) long, 8.2-m- (27-ft-) diameter, tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavated waste water storage and conveyance tunnel; six tangential vortex-flow intakes ranging from 1,533 to 5,700 L/s (35 to 130 mgd) peak flow capacity, two construction shafts, six 1.8-m (6-ft) finished diameter connecting tunnels ranging in length from 6 to 975 m (20 to 3,200 ft) and a 5,700-L/s (130-mgd) wet/dry pit pump station. The pump station will have a semi-circular wet well with a dividing wall that extends almost to the top of the shaft and a spilt dry well for reliable operation. Roller gates will control the flow to the wet well from the tunnel. The pump station will have six 1,420 L/s (32.5 mgd) pumps and two sets of stair wells and elevators. With a finished diameter of 32 m (104 ft) and a depth of 62 m (204 ft), this is the largest pump station shaft constructed so far in Georgia for the dewatering of a waste water tunnel. The pump station shaft was also the highlight of the well attended and successful 2009 Shaft Design and Construction Short Course held in Atlanta, Sept. 10-11. The two-day course was sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME and Pennsylvania State University and concluded with a field trip to the pump station shaft. The tunnel starts south of the city of Austell and finishes at the South Cobb Water Reclamation Facility (WRF), located on the banks of the [ ] Chattahoochee River just north of Interstate 20 (Fig. 1). The South Cobb Tunnel will run 30 to 137 m (100 to 450 ft) below the surface, with an average depth of about 91 m (300 ft), through metamorphic rocks (Fig 2). The construction contract was awarded to Shea-Traylor JV with the lowest bid price of $305 million and notice-to-proceed was given on July 14, 2008. Jordan Jones & Goulding, Inc. (JJG) is the project designer and performed the geotechnical investigations. Parsons/Jacobs Associates is the construction manager. The South Cobb Tunnel is CCWS?s second deep hard rock tunnel. The 15.3-km- (9.5-mile-) long, 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diameter TBM excavated the Chattahoochee Tunnel was the first deep tunnel to be construced in Cobb County. Construction began in 2000 and the project was completed four years later. It is located about 16 km (10 miles) northeast of the South Cobb Tunnel in similar geology. It was designed by JJG to meet east Cobb?s long-term waste water capacity needs and provide flow equalization to the R.L. Sutton WRF. The Chattahoochee Tunnel was named ?Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year? by the Georgia Sec-tion of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2006.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. The $280-million in-vestment is Caterpillar?s largest commitment ever to the mining industry

A dedicated tunnel construction version of the Caterpillar 328D LCR compact radius excavator is proving highly productive on the A9 Autoroute construction project near Visp, in Switzerland. It is the first machine of its kind to operate on a Swiss contract and uses a special dedicated front attachment designed and constructed by German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. The machine offers a powerful, stable and compact solution for tunneling contractors. A rear overhang of just 305 mm (12 in.) provides a tail swing radius of just 1.9 m (6.2 ft). The 328D LCR is ideal for the restricted working areas within a tunnel construction site. The machine is equipped with the wide tracks from the 330D L conventional crawler excavator, ensuring maximum stability when operating. In addition, the boom mounting has been moved further toward the center of the machine for the tunnel model, creating an increased lift capacity over the front end compared with a standard 325D L. The boom itself features a robust box section construction, with high-strength steels, additional supporting struts and reinforced bearings for maximum durability. All pins have hard-chromium plating for optimum protection against wear. Stick digging force is a powerful 134 kN, with up to 212 kN of bucket digging force available, for maximum penetration in blasted material. The 328D LCR is also equipped with a heavy-duty dozer blade as standard. This ensures outstanding stability when working and providing a useful secondary tool for clearing and leveling within the jobsite. Two 45° tilting mechanisms in the boom construction, allow the boom to be swung to 45° on either side of the machine. So the specially designed attachment linkage provides increased rollback for access to the roof of the tunnel. A Caterpillar CW45S mechanical quick-coupler allows rapid changes between specialist tunneling attachments, standard Caterpillar buckets and a range of Caterpillar work tools. The machine is powered by a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine. This six-cylinder EU Stage IIIA diesel motor [ ] offers 8 percent more power than its predecessor, with 140 kW (190 hp) available at just 1,800 rpm. Caterpillar?s ACERT combustion technology results in lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emissions. However, the tunnel machine is also equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard, to further cut exhaust gases within the tunnel working. The 328D LCR is designed for use in transport tunnels of 6.8 m (22.3 ft) in height. With the tunneling boom in place, the machine has an operating weight of 42,540 kg (93,783 lbs), yet retains a transport height with the tunnel boom of just 3.9 m (12.8 ft). Transport width with 600 mm (23.6 in.) track shoes, is just 3.2 m (10.5 ft). On the A9 tunnel contract, the machine is being used by a consortium of Swiss and Austrian companies working for the canton of Valais? Routes Nationals Construction (RNC) department. The 31.8-km (19.7-mile) A9 Autoroute construction project will connect Sierre in the west and the town of Brig to the east. The tunnel that is bypassing the town of Visp is just one of a number along the mountainous route.

"The Ninetyeast Ridge (NER) extends roughly N-S as a topographic feature for 5000 km, from 31° south to 10° north (Fig. 1) where it becomes buried beneath the Bengal Fan at its northern end. These two geographic characteristics make the NER an ideal natural laboratory for determining the influence of latitude and terrestrial input to ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust formation and composition. In addition to study of geographic controls on crust composition, the NER is the largest feature in the Indian Ocean that may host crusts of economic interest.Crusts were collected from 9 of 33 dredge sites from 1.4° north to 26° south latitudes during the 2007 R.V. Roger Revelle Knox06 cruise. Nineteen samples were analyzed for 69 elements each. Nine bulk crusts and 10 layers from four crusts were analyzed. Three of the crusts sub-sampled for layers did not have the bulk crust analyzed and the weighted means for those layers were calculated to obtain bulk compositions. One sample was left out of the statistical analyses because it is phosphatized and chemically quite different from the other samples (Table 1).In order to determine changes in composition with latitude, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated for the chemical dataset and latitude of dredge sites, as well as water depth. At the 95-99% confidence level, the following elements increase in crusts moving north along the NER: Mg, Ti, S, Cd, Ni, Tl, Mn, Ba, Co, Cu, In, Li, and Zn; and the following elements decrease northward: Fe, Fe/Mn, P, As, Sc, the rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY), Bi, Ge, and Pb. These correlations indicate that the iron oxyhydroxide component and its associated elements are more prevalent to the south, and the manganese-oxide phase and associated elements increase toward the north end of the NER. This change occurs between dredges D20 and D14 (Fig. 1), with crusts from D20 and south having Fe/Mn !1.0 and those north of D20 ""1.2, with the exception of the phosphatized crust. Crust composition also changes with water depth: Th, Ge, Pb, and the middle rare earth elements (REEs) increase with increasing water depth. Thorium commonly increases in deeper water crusts, which explains the higher Th concentrations in Atlantic and Indian ocean crusts in general compared with Pacific crusts (Fig. 2 and Hein et al., 2012), including the samples analyzed here with a mean water depth of 3584 m. However, water depth does not explain the latitudinal changes because the mean water depths of samples along the northern and southern segments of the NER are roughly comparable. Surprisingly, Si and Al, representing the aluminosilicate/detrital phase, do not correlate with latitude; that is as the ridge approaches and is buried by the Bengal Fan the Si and Al contents do not increase. However, overall, Si and Al have higher concentrations in NER crusts than in central Pacific crusts. Ba can be used as a proxy for primary productivity and statistically does increase to the north along the ridge in the direction of the equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Correlations of Mg, Li, and Zn with latitude may also reflect increased primary productivity at lower latitudes."

The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Pilot testing for the Continuous Elution Process was conducted at Western Mining's Kambalda gold plant beginning in December 1982. This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall's column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall's point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. Introduction The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track" or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.3 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV, Pre-Feasibility Planning Proper early planning and identification of priority items were necessary to expedite project progress. On April 1, 1978, HIMCO leased the rights to the Borealis prospect and initiated exploration activities almost immediately. Since Borealis was showing excellent potential for mine development, an effort to clear the way environmentally was initiated during the summer of 1979. With the Borealis properties located within the Toiyabe National Forest, the US Forest Service (USFS) was recognized as the "lead" or respon¬sible agency for addressing the environmental issues. Early scoping of the environmental issues by both HIMCO and the USFS allowed HIMCO to take the initiative and address two potentially critical issues-archaeological and biological. Third party consultants, agreed upon by HIMCO and the USFS, were contracted to conduct archaeological and biological surveys. Desert Research Institute of Reno, NV, provided archaeological services, and JFL & Associates of Boulder, CO, provided biological services. These efforts began in the fall of 1979 and continued through the summer of 1980. Conservative Design Criteria By adoption of conservation design criteria, flowsheets and processing data required for detail engineering were firmly established with a minimum of impact on schedule. On Oct. 21, 1980, HIMCO formally initiated a feasibility study to evaluate the Borealis project. Four organizations were contracted for particular scopes of work: • John T. Boyd Co.: Ore reserve estimation, preliminary mine plan, and mine capital and operating cost estimation. • Bechtel Civil and Minerals: Conceptual engineering, processing capital and operating cost estimation. • Hazen Research Inc.: Metallurgical testing. • Sierra Pacific Power: Cost estimation for power supply. Metallurgical testing and conceptual engineering of both heap and agitation leach flowsheets were investigated concurrently. Numerous economic evaluations were conducted for both heap and agitation leaching at varying production capacities. The results indicated a heap leaching flowsheet treating 454 kt/y (500,000 stpy) yielded the best economics and was compatible with the "fast-track" development goal. Conservative design criteria was established to provide operating flexibility and ensure plant productivities. A summary of major design criteria is presented in Table 1. HIMCO assembled the results of the studies of the various consultants along with internally generated studies to produce the feasibility document. The decision to supply 100% equity by HIMCO rather than arrange project financing help to expedite the project. Cooperation Between HIMCO and Regulatory Agencies With cooperation and mutual trust established between HIMCO and regulatory agencies, the time required for environmental permitting was streamlined as much as practical. To expedite the required construction permits, HIMCO proposed to the USFS that HIMCO fund the total cost of an Environmental Assessment Report (EAR) and that issues be addressed at the technical level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The previous studies on the critical issues of archaeology and biology provided HIMCO with the information to satisfy the proposed approach. Houston International Minerals and the USFS agreed to have Environmental Research and Technology (ERT) of Fort Collins, CO, prepare a draft EAR for the USFS.

Salt dome hosted metallic sulfide deposits are the product of a complex evolutionary system involving halokinesis, cap rock development and diagenesis, and the generation, migration, and accumulation of basinal brines and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons play an important role in: (1) the production of calcite cap rock which hosts some of the metallic sulfide and sulfur concentrations, and (2) the generation of the reduced sulfur available for metallic sulfide precipitation and sulfur formation. Hydrocarbons and related fluids also are involved in the transporta¬tion and remobilization of the metals. Hydrocarbon consumption, in the course of cap rock development and sulfide mineralization at Hockley dome, is estimated to have been 6.4 million barrels of oil or 114 million cubic feet of methane. Mineral textures, including cap-rock banding, sulfide bands in anhydrite, and fine sulfide mineral banding indicate both episodic fluid influx and fluid compositional differences through time. Features such as pyrite "shells" and sphalerite and marcasite hemispheres may have been localized by hydrocarbon droplets and /or bacterial colonies. Marcasite mineralization in shallow strata above and flanking Hockley dome is best developed over the western and southern parts of the dome. This pattern mimics the known distribution of sulfide mineralization, which is dominantly marcasite, in the underlying cap rock. The iron sulfide paragenetic sequence in the sediments is pyritohedral and cubic + pyrithohedral pyrite followed by marcasite which is encrusted by cubic pyrite. Sulfur isotopic averages for the three stages are +20.8, -20.2, and +6.4 per mil, respectively. These values generally coincide with cap rock sulfate (+20 per mil), cap rock hosted metallic sulfides (-20 to +4 per mil), and sulfur in hydrocarbons (+5.8 per mil). Hydrocarbon compositions indicate provincial variations in oil composition and generation history. Long Point and Boling domes, which have an intergrown sulfide-sulfate-sulfur mineral assemblage indicative of mixed reducing-oxidizing environment, contain oils that are less mature than Hockley dome which appears to be more mineralogically segregated. Sterane biomarker compositions of the oils at Hockley, Long Point and Boling domes indicate a local, dominantly terrestrial source. An oil sample from supracap sandstones on the northeast flank of Hockley dome contained over 750 ppm combined Fe, Zn, Pb, and Co, indicating that hydrocarbons are carrying or remobilizing metals. Cap rock calcite and anhydrite also exhibit provincial variations in strontium isotopic ratios. Calcite and anhydrite cap rocks from several sulfide mineralized domes in the Houston diapir province have strontium isotopic ratios that are more radiogenic than Jurassic sea water (>0.7078). A calcite sample within massive sulfides at Winnfield dome also has a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7085). Variations in strontium isotopic ratios with strontium content indicate the mixing of at least three Sr-bearing fluids in the cap rock environment, one of which may have been the metal carrier. Anhydrite residues from diapiric salt have strontium ratios up to 0.7100, considerably more radiogenic than Jurassic seawater. These high ratios indicate either that salt and anhydrite recrystallized sometime post-Jurassic in the presence of a fluid with a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio, or that they precipitated in the Jurassic from a fluid with a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio than Jurassic seawater. Salt domes with cap rocks containing metallic sulfides have only been found in basins that have geopressured zones. Waters from geopressured zones in the vicinity of mineralized salt domes have salinities that are two or more times higher and iron and base metal concentrations that are three to one thousand times higher, than geopressured fluids from other parts of the basin.

Mention of company names or products does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Accident data indicates that mobile haulage poses a significant pinning, crushing, and striking risk. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have the potential to protect mineworkers from these risks. However, unintended consequences of mobile PDSs can undermine the safety benefit they provide. Soliciting iterative user input can improve the design process. Users help provide a critical understanding of how mobile PDSs may hinder normal operation and endanger mineworkers. Researchers explored users’ perspectives by conducting interviews with mineworkers from seven mines that have installed mobile PDSs on some of their haulage equipment. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance, and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure, and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved task compatibility, training, logistics, and PDS performance might help address some of these identified issues. This paper also gives additional insights into mobile PDS design and implementation. INTRODUCTION Pinning, crushing, and striking accidents are a large problem in underground coal mines, especially for mobile haulage. Between 1984 and 2014 there were 179 non-fatal and 42 fatal pinning, crushing, and striking accidents involving mobile haulage vehicles, including coal hauling machines and scoops [1]. Proximity detection systems (PDSs)—automated systems that decelerate and stop a vehicle in order to prevent a collision—have the potential to protect mineworkers in these situations. In fact, PDSs are now required on all place change continuous mining machines as of March 16, 2018, as a result of the final rule published in January 2015 (30 CFR 75.1732) [2]. To address mobile haulage, later in 2015 the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also proposed a new rule that would require PDSs on mobile haulage vehicles [3]. Though there has been no additional actions related to the proposed rule and it is not currently required, mobile PDS can still help to save lives. MSHA estimates that the adoption of mobile PDSs could prevent approximately 70 injuries and 15 fatalities over the next 10 years [4]. As of June 2015, the underground coal industry had already equipped 155 of the 2,116 mobile haulage vehicles in use [1]. In order to capitalize on the projected safety gains afforded by PDSs, it is important that the systems are designed and implemented effectively. Along with others, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been exploring PDSs for more than two decades [5-7]. Throughout this time, NIOSH has also held several stakeholder meetings (2010, 2014, 2016, and 2017) in order to disseminate information and provide an opportunity to discuss on ongoing issues and concerns. Despite some progress, human factors remain a key concern. Previous research examined mineworkers’ attitudes towards PDSs on continuous mining machines [8] as well as how continuous miner operators’ perceptions of risk have changed as a result of PDSs [7]. However, stakeholders have still expressed a need to better understand how mobile PDSs affect the mining process, the mineworker, and whether and how they may present previously unidentified risks.
