In 1977, Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Mining was developed at the Homestake Mine and by 1983 had become a fully integrated mining method contributing 60% to total underground production. VCR has proven successful for continuous ore blocks exceeding 55,100 tons (50,000 st) with dips greater than 60" and provides a productivity average of 39 tons (35 st) per man shift (tpms) which is 92% greater than Open Cut-and-Fill. Discontinuous ore bodies, small pods, or flat structures not amenable to bulk systems are mined with Mechanized Cut-and-Fill (MCF) and have been able to achieve a 32 tpms (29 st) average productivity. Small, low grade, remnant ore bodies were not economically viable with large scale bulk techniques and couldn't support the development required for a MCF system. As a result, Homestake began researching modified bulk mining methods to increase production rates and maintain safety, while lowering costs. A modified version of VCR with significantly diminished development was prototyped in an effort to reduce initial capital investment and expedite the production phase. This modified method is called Small Block Vertical Crater Retreat (S. B. VCR). Geology The Homestake Gold Mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota at Lead. Having been active since 1876, it now extends from the surface to the 2,440 m (8000 ft) level underground.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach is a relatively new method to study the mechanical behavior of rock masses. Recently, an SRM approach was established to estimate pillar strength from laboratory scale to in-situ dimension using the two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). In this study, the developed methodology is applied to the S-Pillar database to estimate pillar strength and failure mechanisms as a function of width-to-height ratio of the pillars. First, stone mine rocks are categorized into three as low-, medium-, and high-strength according to their uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Later, laboratory-scale intact rocks are scaled-up to the average in-situ pillar dimensions by explicitly considering the naturally existing joint sets. It is found that the strength of the pillars with low-UCS are overestimated when compared to pillars with high-UCS. This observation is attributed to the high joint density of the pillars with high-UCS. After obtaining in-situ pillar strength, the width-to-height ratios of the pillar models varied from 0.5 to 2.0 to gain a robust understanding of pillar mechanical behavior. Processing bauxite and clay ores to reduce Iron content to levels low enough for the ores to be suitable raw materials for such products as refractories and abrasives has long been regarded as a diffi9ult problem. Standard magnetic separation processing of the untreated ore has been attempted by previous investigators with only limited success due to the finely divided state and weak magnetic susceptibility of the iron minerals (hematite, geothite, etc.) present in these ores. The new process described in this paper consists of calcining the finely crushed ore at 500 to 800 C and then reducing (with hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc.) the iron oxides present to magnetite or elemental Iron. The magnetic susceptibility of iron in these forms is enhanced 40-to 100-fold over that of hematitie and is readily removed by simple magnetic separation. Starting with a 2.7% Fe20s Alabama bauxite ore, a 1.5% Fe20s product was produced in one pass through a Davis tube magnetic separator with 95 + % recovery of the iron-free bauxite fraction and a 20% Fe20a magnetic product. These findings suggest that with the addition of light calcination, reduction and magnetic separation steps to the conventional refractory grain production process, the large U.S. reserves of high-iron bauxites could be used.

A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

The stability of shale gas wells drilled through current and future coal reserves can be compromised by ground deformations due to nearby longwall mining. Depending on the longwall-induced rockmass permeability, the high-pressure explosive gas from the damaged well may reach mine workings and overwhelm the mine ventilation systems. This study uses geomechanical models to estimate the rockmass permeability induced by mining. A two-panel longwall model of a deep, 341-m-cover mining site in southwestern Pennsylvania is constructed in 3DEC to explicitly model the rockmass by a Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) technique. Stress-induced fracture apertures and permeabilities are calculated across the model and are validated against permeability measurements. A Fracture Flow Code (FFC) is developed to use these results to predict potential inflow to the mine should a gas well breach occur. One hundred DFN realizations are simulated, and the results show that for a gas pressure of 2.4 MPa, the average of the predicted inflow rates to this deep-cover mine is 0.03 m3 /s, significantly lower than the average inflow of 0.92 m3 /s for a shallow-cover mine (145 m deep) studied in the previous work (Khademian, et al. 2021). INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

"Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hrs. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the heat and humidity buildup inside an RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in a fully occupied RA must not exceed 95°F. To investigate this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4°C (17°F) and the relative humidity (RH) approached 94 %RH. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the average air temperature inside the RA at the end of 96 hours to within 0.6°C (1.0°F) of the average measured air temperature. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke, or even death. In its 2007 report to Congress, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) recommended that RAs should be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature (a temperature-humidity metric) in an occupied RA does not exceed 35°C (95°F). However, a standard method to determine compliance with this metric does not exist. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex, and is not easily defined analytically or experimentally. To investigate the related issues, OMSHR conducted heat and humidity testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. During the testing, numerous parameters were measured: heat input to the chamber, the air temperature and relative humidity inside the RA, the air temperature in the mine, the mine strata temperatures versus depth, and the airflow inside and outside the chamber. The focus of this paper is on the temperature rise within an RA. TAITherm heat transfer analysis software was used to develop a thermal simulation model of the RA as it was tested in the mine, using the test results as the benchmark. Both sensible and latent heat were used in the test and the model."

"Federal regulations require refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). NIOSH research has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with RAs because they have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex and is not easily defined analytically nor experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in RAs, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA. The test results show that when moisture was introduced into the tests to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average measured internal air temperature at midheight increased by 7.7°C, 9.4°C, and 10.5°C, and the RH approached 95%, 94%, and 88%, respectively. For the dry tests when no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 8.4°C, 10.3°C, and 12.6°C, respectively. MSHA regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature does not exceed 35°C (95°F) when the RA is fully occupied [1]. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Before a mobile RA can be deployed at an underground mine for emergency usage, it must be tested to show that its internal AT when fully occupied will not exceed the 35°C (95°F) limit. For practical reasons, RA manufacturers usually conduct their tests at above-ground test facilities. To investigate RA thermal response in an in-mine environment, NIOSH conducted multiple 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA in its underground coal mine facility. The work described in this paper could be used by RA manufacturers to determine a final temperature rise based solely on dry and time-reduced testing."

INTRODUCTION The early record of tunnel excavating machines in hard rock tunneling has not been one to particularly brag about. We have all heard the stories of major difficulties when trying to break hard rock with machines at promised advance rates of several times that of conventional drill and blast. Unfortunately, sometimes this has not happened. It has been through this trial of the past generations disappointments that today's TBM's have evolved to their present high level of performance in a wide range of ground conditions. Today's machines offer much increased reliability and durability. This translates into high availability to the tunnel contractor. Although there still are occasional disappointments being reported, the state of the art is that reliable and predictable machine excavation of rock now is both a reality and well founded expectation. The most recent editions of Atlas Copco's MINI/MIDI Fullfacer, we feel, make a strong contribution to the reliable performance of todays TBM's---especially in small-size rock tunnels. This report will, 1.) explain the equipment and effect of rock both on the cutting technique and machine performance; 2.) list advantages of the non-circular shape, during and after construction; 3.) list applications in civil and mining industries; 4.) discuss North American experiences, performance and costs; 5.) list advantages over drill and blast and; 6.) discuss briefly lease arrangements.

The primary purpose of this paper is to review the fire and explosion hazards associated with hydrocarbons heavier than methane. Methane is the classical hydrocarbon encountered in mines whose presence is generally due to bacterial decomposition of organic debris. The higher hydrocarbons are more likely to be found during tunneling when petroleum products either natural or man made are encountered. Fires may be defined as rapid gas phase oxidations accompanied by the rapid evolution of light and heat. Explosions may be defined as uncontrolled fires. The rapidly expanding gases resulting from combustion exceed the speed of sound and generate percussive forces. The essential elements for a fire or explosion are shown on Figure 12: (1) a gas phase explosive mixture and (2) an ignition source. The paper will attempt to review various aspects relative to the explosive mixture; The concentration and composition; Techniques for detection; Techniques for ventilation to reduce concentration below explosive limits. The ignition sources are also listed on Figure 12. An arc originates from an electrical source such as electrical switches, relays and motor brushes. Static electricity can also be an arc source and may be generated by air flowing through rubber bases or a rapidly moving endless belt. A spark is generally associated with abrasion of iron metal. Improving the state-of-the-art of tunneling is a continuing challenge to those involved in underground construction. New methods and procedures are usually evolved over a relatively long period of time as compared to advancements in other types of construction. To a large extent this is probably due to the fact that tunneling deals with a material or medium - the rock structure - whose physical properties are not only extremely varied, but in many instances virtually unknown until time of penetration. This hovering of the unknown tends to make "non believers" of many and at best leads to a general reluctancy of accepting new ideas or procedures. The situation is further complicated by: 1) discrepancies in terminology and respective meanings as used by different disciplines to describe, define or evaluate pertinent factors and their relative effect on the tunneling process and 2) the fact that no two tunneling situations are identical with respect to either geological conditions or construction and contractual requirements. In spite of the above there have been many successfully completed tunnels which make it apparent that both the technical and practical expertise needed to develop or project improvements is available within the industry. The unique and irregulator distribution of working places in a mine always poses the two questions: - which and how much production equipment is to be used, - what production can be expected. Since the development of analytical methods would be impractical for such cases, a lot of computer programs has emerged in recent years trying to simulate the productiom process and thus find the best answer. The usege of a simulator has its dark side well felt by the author(s) of such a program: the credibility and the confidence of the customer. Using the simulator means to respect and to incorporate all the restrictions imposed by the narow underground space, methods of production, safety regulations etc., which can turn out to become a major programming effort. If the program is not properly structured, it will be used for a single special' case only, and never again. In this paper the structure and internal mechanism of the simulator is described for which the author believes that can easily be adapted to conditions of various underground and open pit mines. MINSIM tries to reach the following rather ambitious goals: 1) Estimation of the production before opening the mine, or a part of the mine. 2) Training the personnel to make decisions. 3) Making the daily time schedules for the entire fleet of the equipment units.

A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

INTRODUCTION Friction Rock Stabilizers, commonly called Split Sets,tm* have been under development since early 1973. Five years of intensive laboratory and field testing led to their introduction to the metal mines in the United States in the fall of 1976. Actual sales started in February of 1977 and, to date, over five million units have been marketed to metal mines. The present rate of useage is near 3 1/2 million units per year which is approximately 50 per cent of all roof fixtures used in the United States metal mining industry. Mr. Richard Hoppe, Senior Editor of Engineering & Mining Journal, in an article of the February, 1979, issue, entitled "Winning the Battle Against Bad Ground", said, "In hardrock mining operations in the western U.S., particularly underground uranium mines where exceedingly difficult ground is common, no roof support system has been accepted more quickly than the Split Set friction bolt invented by Dr. James J. INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of collector type on sulfide mineral flotation is generally determined by the amount and type of functional groups of collector molecules that interact with surface and water at the mineral/collector/water/gas interface. The final interfacial state when bubble contact takes place is preceded by chemical and physical reactions that involve these gas/liquid/solid interactions. These interactions differ not only for different minerals, solution and gas composition, but also for different collector molecules. The purpose of this paper is primarily to summarize the developments and status of short (C2-C6) and long (C12) chain, aliphatic collectors that contain three sulfur atoms in their polar function. These are trithiocarbonates (TT'Cs). For purposes of comparison, similarities in molecules containing 0, N and S are compared. Mostly short chain ionic collectors molecules of dithiocarbonates (DTCs) and TT'Cs were compared. The studies, largely bench scale flotation and plant testing, were carried out on ores containing Cu, Ni, Au, and PGM's. Studies of long chain 'ITC collectors are reported on Ni, PGM and auriferous pyrite ores containing uranium. Under starvation dosage conditions, surface activity coefficients of short chain collector molecules and interacting water were calculated. The rock laterite was first discovered and described in the State of Kerala, India in 1800 A.D. by Francis Buchanan. It had been used here, and elsewhere in India, for many centuries as a building stone, but in Buchanan's time it was not known that some of these laterites were highly aluminous and could be processed to produce alumina. After World War I India started searching for bauxite reserves with a minimum grade of at least 50% A12O3. By 1960, it was estimated that India had a potential reserve of 245 million tonnes of bauxite, about 10% of which was in the "Proved" category. Subsequent geological exploration now reveals that India has an overall resource of more than 2 billion tonnes of aluminium ore, not all of it bauxite, as defined by earlier geologists. In this paper, the geology, resources and distribution of bauxite and aluminium ore throughout India are described. The generalised stratigraphy, typical laterite and bauxite profiles and summary of the resource position are shown in the attached Tables 1 to 8. It is generally agreed that a tropical to sub-tropical climate, intermittent wet and dry season, good permeability of country rock and suitable drainage, as well as physiographic and ground water conditions are important in the development of bauxite.

Just south of the L'Enfant Station in Seventh Street, the WMATA system splits into two branches, each comprising twin single-track soft ground tunnels. Immediately at the beginning of the section, Interstate Route 95 crosses transversely over the alignment in open cut, removing most of the cover over the tunnels. Seventh Street spans I-95 on a bridge whose abutments and pier also cross transversely over the four tunnels, with their footings as little as 7 feet above the tunnel crown (Figure 1). Soil investigations revealed that the tunnels would have to be driven through mixed face, with a clay invert and a waterlogged sand crown. Thus, there was a good chance that the roof would fall in, leaving 1-95 and the Seventh Street Bridge in a crater. Since there was no roof that could be counted on, these were figuratively (and potentially truly) Washington Metro's Topless Tunnels (Figures 2 and 3). DESIGN ALTERNATIVES Faced with this situation, the designers considered several options, including temporary detours that would permit demolition of the bridge and building tunnels under the 1-95 Freeway by cut-and-cover methods. They also investigated structural underpinning of the bridge and freeway pavement, and strengthening the bridge abutments and center pier by post-tensioning to enable them to span over any subsidence trough.

An evaluation was recently performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, Wyoming. A 1.52m (5 ft) diameter, 37.3kw (50 hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated approximately 31.4 m'/sec (66,578 ft'/min) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of approximately 20 pct of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 6l0m (2,000 ft) and 1,829m (6,000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane, and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.

The Kemmerer Coal Company's Sorensen Mine is located approximately 7 miles Southwest of the Town of Kemmerer, Lincoln County, Wyoming. The coal it produces is delivered via conveyor directly to Utah Power and Light's Naughton Steam Generating Plant. The Plant went on the line in the spring of 1963 and the Sorensen Mine has been producing coal since February of that year. In this period, approximately 2, 000, 000 tons of coal have been delivered to the Plant. Present Sorensen mining operations are being carried out in the upper seams of the Adaville Formation. The formation contains, in some places, up to 30 coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Thirteen seams are considered major and are given numbers; the rest are considered splits off of the major seams and are so named. The lowest seam stratigraphically is the No. 1, or Elkol seam. So far, it has not been committed to power production but is being held in- reserve. It is the thickest seam with 80-90 feet of coal as its average thickness. The other major seams vary from 10-50 feet thick, with most of the seams averaging 17-26 feet of thickness. Each major seam has been opened at least once' to obtain a true gross sample of the coal's performance in the Plant.
