INTRODUCTION The planned 166 kilometer (103 mile) Metro rapid rail transit system in Washington, D.C. is being designed and constructed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At the present time, 112.6 kilometers (70 miles) of this system is in operation and contains 21 route-kilometers (13 miles) of rock tunneling, and 14.5 route-kilometers (9 miles) of soft ground tunneling. An additional 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) of single track tunnels in rock are planned and 6 additional contracts will consist of some 8 kilometers (5 miles) of twin tunnel, resulting in 16 additional linear kilometers (10 miles) of single track tunnel in soft ground. The Authority plans, upon its evaluation and the recommendation of the General Engineering Consultant, to include an alternative design incorporating the convergence confinement method of construction known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), for Sections E-5, E-6e and E-8a of the E-Route. The Metro system is constructed in a variety of geological conditions and crosses the boundary of two major geographic provinces. "Himalayan geology poses the most challenging ground conditions almost anywhere in the world, one of the reasons thereof is their evolution as the youngest mountain chains. They are demonstratively rising faster than any mountain elsewhere. The composition is also younger, and consequently less well consolidated than the other older fold belts. This is consistent with the fact that they constitute one of the most active of the plate margin zones rising at a rate that is almost double the Andes, which is in turn three times that of the Alps. Thus, stress conditions (Magnitude and variations) can potentially be more extreme and adverse on a Himalayan tunneling project. Tunnel excavation under the Himalayan Mountains will pose significantly more challenges than an equal length and equal cover drive almost anywhere in the world. These in-depth-tunneling difficulties through high mountainous terrains have posed major challenges for application of traditional drill and blast (D&B) and NATM methods. Handling such adverse geology at any depth is always problematic and generally leads, if not adequately foreseen, to the significant tunneling delays. The author wants to highlight the challenges faced and on the spot solutions adopted while executing most prestigious 273Km long Udhampur –Srinagar- Baramula Rail Link Project (USBRL) in the Himalayas in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, India. The main focus of the paper is on main stretch of USBRL Project i.e. T-80 (India’s 2nd longest railway tunnel & 3rd longest in Asia) where the team of the author has recently completed a 11.2 Km long tunnel and where the train track has gone operational from Qazigund to Banihal. The construction of this stretch posed several challenges akin to highly adverse geological conditions. Executing on -the -spot solutions, the project has been completed successfully. 1.0 INTRODUCTION Construction of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Broad gauge railway line is one of the Mega projects undertaken by Indian Railways to establish a dependable transportation in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In engineering terminology, it is a challenging project negotiating breakthroughs against the complex Himalayan geology. The Project which has been operational over last 12 years , stretch by stretch, is in advance stage of construction . The purpose of the prestigious project is to connect the Kashmir valley to the mainland of the state of the country. On the date owing to the hurdles of the tuff terrain, the transport of this part is totally dependent on the surface transport, i.e., through a road which connects NH-1A from Delhi to Srinagar. The altitude of the region varies from 500.00 to 1700.00, ranging through Udhampur to Katra - Reasi –Sangaldan- Banihal-Quazikund-Ananthnag-Srinagar-and Baramulla. The main features of this project are its Pirpanjal Tunnel and T-48 & 49 tunnels which cover the maximum length of tunneling through thick hostile geological conditions, the total length being 138km. Details of Pirpanjal tunnels are shown in Figure-1."

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. It is difficult to decide who most deserves credit for discovery of a mining district that has produced over 19.8 Mg (7,000,000 fine oz) of gold and still contains a large reserve of low grade ore. Fred Culver may have made the first discovery. In the summer of 1867, the ship's log of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s steamer Otter stated that Fred Culver had been found nearly lifeless from wounds, without provisions, but with some 2.3 kg (80 oz) of rough, placer gold in the bottom of his canoe; he told of finding a rich creek and an attack by Indians that caused the death of his two companions. The place of rescue was about 24 km (15 miles) southeast from the present site of Juneau. Possibly John Muir, the hero of modem environmentalists, should be given important credit. In 1879 he reported finding mineralization along what later became to be known as the Juneau Gold Belt, and it was his report that induced the cantankerous German mining engineer, George Pilz, to grub- stake some of the prospectors who had drifted into Sitka from the declining gold placers of Cassiar, British Columbia. Pilz also offered rewards to Indians who might report gold discoveries.

Instrumentation engineers have recently devised practical methods of metering the net solids flowing in a hydraulic mixture. The solids flow rate is determined by measuring the specific gravity and the flow rate of the mixture. T e specific gravity is measured by a variation of the bubbler system. The flow measurement is made by a somewhat unorthodox orifice requiring field calibrations. The linear mixture flow signal is then multiplied by the specific gravity signal, which is directly proportional to the percentage of solids in the mixture, to produce a linear solids Slow rate signal. The computations in this system are performed by Sorteberg pneumatic relays. Having obtained this measurement, integration and automatic control of hydraulic solids flow are available. This system is useful in mining, drilling and dredging industries. It provides maintenance of the net solids flow rate and reduces power consumption. Automatic control will provide rapid stabilization of net solids flow rate and release operators from making menual adjustments. The advantages of this application are economy of operation and increased pump efficiency, This paper describes a hydraulic solids flowmeter system installed aboard a dredge. Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. The objective of this study was to subject two Alaska low-rank coals to hydrothermal drying to enhance their marketability in the Pacific Rim markets and to evaluate the chemical and physical properties of the dried products as a function of process conditions. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield have a heating value of approximately 18.5 MJ/kg and contain about 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275° to 325° C) of lump coal, from the Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coalfield, enhanced the heating value of the material, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 18.5 MJ/kg to nearly 27.8 MJ/kg. The product coal, with a high heating value and only 0.2% S, is an environmentally-acceptable premium fuel; additionally, with the Hardgrove grindability index of the coal greatly improved, its value is even further enhanced. An increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Also, ulminite reflectance increased to 0.92%, and ulminite was subjected to widespread vesiculation; this resulted in a coke-like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). The R-N Process is an outgrowth of the development by the National Lead Company's Norwegian subsidiary Titania A/S, of a process for producing metallic iron and a high titanium content co-product from ilmenite. Development of the process for the treatment of iron ores was continued as a joint project of the Republic Steel Corporation and the National Lead Company in 1953. More recently in July, 1957, the R-N Corporation was created by these two companies to undertake the commercial promotion of the results of this joint project. This paper has been prepared with the permission and encouragement of these three companies. The R-N process has as its objective the making of metallic iron from iron ores or iron ore concentrates. The general principles of the process have already been disclosed in technical papers and patents. In general the process comprises the following steps: 1. Iron oxide in crushed natural iron ores or iron ore concentrates is reduced to about 95% metallic iron, without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of solid carbonaceous fuel,*such as, coke or char, limestone and combustible gases. 2. The kiln discharge, consisting of metallized ore, coke, lime and coke ashes, is cooled. The excess coke is regenerated and recycled to the kiln feed.

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined with underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GmbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost-effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gamma probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross-cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 m thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.

INTRODUCTION This article describes the yellow cake drying, packaging and dust collection circuit of the United Nuclear Church Rock Mill. It also describes the layout and floor plan of this section as well as the operation and performance of the various equipment. In order to place the yellow cake section in perspective of the mill as a whole, the mill circuit is described briefly. CHURCH ROCK MILL GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Church Rock Mill contains six operating sections shown in Figure 1 in block diagram form. The grinding section consists of a semi-autogenous mill in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone. The slurry is then routed to the leaching tanks. Sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate is added to dissolve the uranium. The pulp is transferred from the leach tanks to the thickeners where the uranium bearing liquid is separated from the barren solids. The uranium bearing solution is then filtered and pumped to the solvent extraction section. [ ] In the solvent extraction section, the uranium bearing aqueous solution is brought into contact with an organic solution composed of kerosene, amine and isodecanol. The amine extracts the uranium from the aqueous solution. This organic solution is then routed to the stripping section, where the uranium is removed from the organic solution with an ammonium sulfate aqueous solution. The pregnant stripping solution now concentrated to 30 gpl U308 is routed to the precipitation tanks where ammonia is added to precipitate the uranium. The yellow cake is then washed in a counter current circuit of two thickeners and one centrifuge to remove impurities, mainly sulfates in order to meet specifications. The centrifuge centrate is routed to the second wash thickener for forward wash. The centrifuge cake at approximately 50% solids consistency is transferred to the yellow cake dryer via a screw conveyor. YELLOW CAKE DRYING, PACKAGING AND DUST COLLECTION Figure 2 shows the flowsheet of the integrated circuit of drying, packaging and dust collection. This section of course centers around the yellow cake dryer as the main equipment. The other main units are the dust collectors for the dryer and packaging respectively, a yellow cake storage bin and the yellow cake packaging facilities. Physically, all of this equipment occupies four floors, beginning at the top floor: 1. Both dust collector fans, the centrifuge and the screw conveyor to transport the yellow cake to the dryer. 2. The dryer, fire box and both dust collectors occupy the third floor. Figure 3 shows the floor plan of the third and fourth floors. 3. The yellow cake storage bin and dryer dust collector sump are located on the second floor. 4. The ground floor houses the loading facilities consisting of two load out ports from the bin to barrels, a roller conveyor loop, drum weighing scale, and change room facilities. Figure 4 shows the ground floor plan. Figure 5 is an elevation view of this section showing the overall equipment arrangement.

Research and development studies were carried out at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to produce a synthetic forsterite sand from asbestos tailings for Les Sables Olimag Inc. The National Research Council of Canada also supported and collaborated to the project. Theoretically, the technological approach consists of a heat at over 1300°C; however, the process without additive would result in the production of an enstatite-rich product (MgSiO3) having a fusion temperature less than 1600°C. The purpose was to foster the formation of forsterite (Mg2SiO4), a more refractory compound. The fabrication of the forsterite product requires pre-agglomeration of serpentine-MgO with a binder, which is stable at high temperature, to prevent the loss of the powdered magnesium oxide as dust in the kiln off gases and to maintain the mixture homogeneous during the process. Characterization of the end products with respect to mineral composition and thermal resistance are described. The synthetic forsterite in sand form was tested with success under a bath of liquid steel maintained at 1700°C for up to two hours. The advantages of the new sand and its potential applications will be reviewed.

The paper contains the results of the physical and mathematical simulations (based on the finite elements simulation) of the length and shape influence on the mechanical strength of the brex. Key words: Stiff extrusion, extruded briquettes, BREX, mechanical strength, cold strength, compressive strength, tensile splitting strength, oval shape, finite elements simulation. INTRODUCTION Extruded briquettes (BREX) exhibit a set of unique properties when compared with briquettes formed by alternative methods. Brex generally have sufficient integrity right after extrusion to withstand the necessary handling and stockpiling and does not require any special means and tools for the green briquettes strength conservation. In a typical die without an ancillary cutting device green brex tend to have very high length to diameter (L/D) or length to section area ratios. For round hole dies the brex are typically 5to 6 times the diameters and even longer. Stiff-extrusion allows also for the very easy changing of the forming dies. Dies with different cross-sectional shapes of the brex (round, ovals, square, hollow structures and many other two dimensional shapes) are possible, and common. The results of our investigations show how these geometrical shape factors contribute to overall quality of the brex both in terms of strength and as new charge components in metallurgical furnaces and processes [2-4]

Most mining companies today perform site assessments and operational or compliance audits regularly. The purpose of these audits is to review company facilities and operations to determine whether they comply with applicable federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations. Why Audit? Companies adopt assessment and audit programs for legal and business reasons. The business reasons include: (1) ensuring efficient and cost-effective compliance through early problem identification and resolution; (2) planning and implementing business transactions such as real estate conveyances, loans, mergers and acquisitions, and waste disposal service contracts; and (3) employee training and relations. Legal reasons for audits include: (1) avoiding enforcement actions and penalties; (2) meeting environmental permit certification requirements; (3) avoiding corporate officer liability; and (4) meeting Security and Exchange Commission disclosure requirements. The Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") encourages environmental auditing by regulated entities. The EPA Environmental Auditing Policy Statement was published in the Federal Register on July 9, 1986 (51 Fed Reg 25,004). Although the existence of an auditing program does not create a defense to or otherwise limit a company's regulatory responsibilities, EPA considers compliance programs in setting inspection and enforcement priorities. If a company makes an honest effort to identify and correct its own problems, EPA's enforcement approach is influenced, especially if violations are promptly reported. Perhaps more significant to many executives, the U.S. Department of Justice issued guidelines last year on when it will pursue criminal prosecution for environmental violations. See Department of Justice, "Factors and Decisions on Criminal Prosecutions for Environmental Violations in the Context of Significant Voluntary Compliance or Disclosure Efforts by the Violator," (July 1, 1991). It is now commonplace to read about major companies pleading guilty to criminal violations and paying millions of dollars in penalties. For example ALCOA recently agreed to pay criminal fines and civil penalties totaling $7.5 million for unauthorized excavation of PCB-contaminated soil and improper dumping of spent caustic solution. No executive wants to explain to the Board of Directors or shareholders why the company was criminally indicted. The Department of Justice considers factors such as voluntary disclosure, preventive measures and compliance programs, such as a regular compliance auditing program, the effectiveness of the disciplinary system for employees who violate the company's environmental policies, and subsequent compliance efforts by companies to remedy ongoing noncompliance. The Department of Justice looks closely at whether audit recommendations were implemented in a timely way and whether environmental compliance was a standard by which employees were judged. The Lawyer's Role. The role of the lawyer in an audit team deserves special attention. When enforcement action or litigation has begun or is contemplated or a government agency has asked for information, attorneys always should be directly involved in environmental audits. In most situations, however, environmental audits are management tools, and the attorney's role should be to advise the team. The attorney can help make sure the team understands the laws and regulations the facility must

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.

The understanding of the influence of the different types of apatite on the performance of mineral processing of igneous phosphate ores is still a challenge due to the difficulty to explain why some types of apatite floats in the froth flotation cell and others do not under the same conditions. Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão mine: predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and less frequently yellow apatite. The chemical composition of these types of apatite was determined by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and LA-ICP-MS. Blue and green apatite respond well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite is the one bearing the lowest P2O5 content and the largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest P and Ca grades and lowest substitution level. A negative correlation of the amount of phosphorus with fluorine was observed. Furthermore, impregnation of iron oxide-hydroxides in the yellow apatite was also observed. Therefore, the low flotation behaviour is due to low crystallinity coupled with impregnation onto its surface.

Recent on-going efforts to develop commercial coal cleaning beneficiation processes using chlorinated solvents-as the separating media will be described. True heavy media separations were performed on raw coal feedstocks, including Pennsylvania anthracite; Western, Eastern, and Midwestern bituminous; and lignite coals. Separation techniques included bath-type devices, cyclones, and liquid/liquid partitioning. Details on separation devices, removal of solvent, and recovery and recycling of solvent will be discussed. Projected costs of full-scale plants will be given for various coal sizes. A number of the coals evaluated are good candidates for beneficiation using chlorinated solvents. Coal beneficiation is desirable to provide needed coal quality. These needs include low ash fuels for coal water slurries and low sulfur fuels to meet emission regulations. In October of 1985, a paper, "Chlorinated Solvents for Coal Beneficiating"' was presented at the fall meeting of SME-AIME at Albuquerque, New Mexico. It reported the results obtained from various coals as feedstocks and of the separations using chlorinated solvents. These beneficiation results depended on true heavy media gravity and liquid/liquid partitioning separations. This paper will include detailed descriptions of the liquid/liquid partitioning process used in "Dow's Advanced Coal Cleaning Technology?2 and of the "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology.?3

INTRODUCTION Construction of a major intercepting sewer in Brooklyn, New York involved tunneling in soil over several subway lines. In two instances the clearance between the subway and sewer was sufficiently close that concern was raised about the influence of the new construction. Prior to each critical crossing, analytical studies were performed which characterized the tunneling influence. It was demonstrated that with adjustments in construction procedures the crossings could be made without affecting the integrity of the subway linings. A comprehensive program of instrumentation and full-time monitoring was undertaken to ensure that any unforeseen adverse developments during crossing would be recognized. The successful crossings were subsequently made with minimal influence. Reported herein are the special construction conditions for the two crossings, the analytical simulation of behavior, and the results of monitoring on the subway linings. SEWER TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION AND EXISTING SUBWAYS The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer is a 2600 m (8600 ft) long tunnel which is part of a major water pollution control project in New York City. For clarity of nomenclature, the sewer is termed a 'tunnel' while the rapid transit structures are termed 'subways'. For routine construction, the tunnel was mined by hand with a 3.2 m (10 ft-5 in.)

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible
