Big and getting bigger. Barrick Gold Corp., the third-largest gold producer in the world, began production in September — ahead of schedule — at its Meikle Mine. At a scheduled full production rate of 12.4 t/a (400,000oz/year), it will be the largest producing underground gold mine in the United States. The $180-million Meikle Mine is located on Barrick’s Goldstrike property in Nevada and has 205 t(6.6 million oz) of gold reserves. The compact Meikle deposit has an average ore grade of 23 g/t (0.68 oz/st), making it one of the highest-grade mines in the country.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching the application of solvent extraction technology to highly acidic (pH < 1) copper leach liquors. As increasingly complex copper ores are mined for leaching, use of highly acidic leach solutions maybe necessary to effectively recover the contained metal values. A mixture of two commercially available extractants, based on aldoximes and substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline, which has a high transfer efficiency has been identified. A synthetic leach liquor, containing 5 g/L Cu at pH 0.9 was processed utilizing the mixed extractant and a laboratory SX circuit. The loaded organic was stripped with a synthetic barren electrolyte compatible with electrowinning technology.

In 1984, work was started to determine the viability of heap leaching silver-containing waste dumps from Cerro Rico near Potosi - Bolivia, at an elevation of 4300 meters (14 100 it.). The result today is an unusual heap leach utilizing fine crushing, grinding, and agglomeration to process 1000 tonnes per day of ore containing 200 g/tonne silver. The unique metallurgical, economic, and political factors will be discussed which led to the decision to build a heap leach rather than a conventional agitation leach plant. Capital and operating costs will be given along with some of the uncommon process design and equipment problems encountered while developing the operation.

Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce done&apos; at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering. feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of verti¬cal autoclave units operating at 170°C (338F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (patent applied for) approach to retreating spiral middlings in a heavymedia cyclone circuit.

Mining activities involve excavation from underground to the surface of large quantities of ore (e.g. uranium and its disintegration products) (Dumitrescu, 2002, 2007). Material with limited content of uranium, deemed as sterile or low-radioactive is mainly stored on the surface. These wastes modify the configuration of the disposal areas and affect the quality of the environment and the landscape. This paper presents both analytical and numerical models related to stability assessment of uranium mining waste dumps. It is focused on the calibration procedure of the numerical models, in order to minimize risk error during stability prediction and avoid long term environment pollution.

"There are few people more qualified to speak of the tumultuous times in the global mining industry during the past four years than Newmont Mining Corp. president and chief executive officer Gary Goldberg.Goldberg stepped into his current position in 2012, just before MINExpo 2012. Gold prices had hit record highs not long before that ($54.15/g or $1,856.40/oz on Sept. 8, 2011), expansions were happening around the world and the gold mining sector was still living in the glow of one of its longest upswings in history.That all changed between April 8 and April 15, 2013 when the price of gold dropped by nearly $200/oz ($46.27/g or $1,586.20/oz on April 8 to $40.45/g or $1,386.80/oz on April 15), putting an end to the decade-long mining boom and forcing mining companies like Newmont to re-evaluateeverything.Three years later, with the gold sector recovering, Newmont Mining is not only surviving but is thriving with a pair of mines coming online, Long Canyon in Nevada and Merian in Suriname. On Oct. 1, the Merian Mine went into production on time and more than $150 million under the initial development capital budget.Goldberg, who was one of the featured speakers at the opening session of MINExpo International 2016 on Sept. 26, also spoke with Mining Engineering about the previous four years and the future of the industry.“Mining goes through cycles all the time and gold is no different,” Goldberg told Mining Engineering when asked about surviving the downturn since 2012. “I thought it was important that we take a good methodical and steady approach across the business to determine what was the right thing to do and to set the business up to improve performance. Anyone can cut costs for the short term, but we set out to do it in a sustainable and reliable way. We created a program we call Full Potential to look for sustainable ways to reduce costs and improve productivity. That program has taken more than a billion dollars out of our costs since we implemented it 2013 and that shows up in our results. Our all in sustaining costs are down 28 percent and our productivity is up 39 percent.”During the downturn, Newmont restructured its business model, sold off some assets and created a leaner, more nimble operation. It has paid off with the addition of two new mines and the acquisition of another, the Cripple Creek & Victor Mine in Cripple Creek, CO.“The gold industry had not seen a downturn in 12 years. We had half a generation that had not experienced a downturn, so helping them through that in an organized way and keeping a view toward the long term throughout the downturn was important. We were one of the few companies that continued to invest in assets,” he said."

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

INTRODUCTION Previous papers by this author have discussed some of the difficulties involved with optimizing the performance of industrial flotation circuits, e.g. Klimpel (1988, 1989). The two major problems seem to be: 1) the inherent "systems" nature of the froth flotation process which leads to a great deal of self-compensation among the various operating options available and 2) the inherent variations in mineralogy, water chemistry, etc. that always seem to be present in industrial operations. In particular, the influence of reagent dosage has been emphasized in the above referenced work including an industrial system interaction denoted as the R/K trade-off, Klimpel (1984, 1987). Using a simple two parameter model for fitting time - recovery data, Klimpel (1980): [ ] where r is cumulative recovery at time t or at the t th cell, R is the long-term equilibrium recovery and K is the first-order rate of mass removal from the cell (time ), the definition of the R/K trade-off with increasing reagent dosage can be given as follows: at low dosages both R and K increase, at intermediate dosages R continues to increase but K starts to level out, and at high dosages, R may flatten out or still continue to increase but K starts to decrease, sometimes rather quickly. An illustration of this effect in a batch laboratory flotation cell is given in Figure 1. The purpose of this paper is to give a detailed plant illustration of this R/K trade-off phenomena with changing collector dosage which shows just how highly interactive the grindinglflotation system in sulfide mineral processing really is. This is one of about 20 plant level case studies that are being presented and evaluated in an upcoming book, Klimpel (1990). The particular study given here was completed in late 1979 on a copper ore of head grade 0.93% Cu. The frother being used was Dowfroth* 250 at a constant dosage of 0.15 g for each ton of solids feed to the rougher bank and the slurry pH was 10.2. The motivation of the study was to better understand the relationship of changes in feed rate (hence in particle size and state of liberation) with variations in collector dosage (potassium amyl xanthate). The major concern was to determine how much extra economic benefit could be gained by better utilizing the existing grinding mills and rougher bank consisting of eight identical cells. The remainder of the flotation circuit was also studied, including regrinding of rougher tails, but did not prove as critical as the rougher bank operation itself. It appeared from an overall economic viewpoint, the battle was being won or lost in the manner in which the rougher bank was being operated. This was not to minimize the roles of the scavenging and cleaning circuits but those portions of this particular circuit could be rather obviously operated to achieve maximum benefit given the specific output of the rougher bank. A special attempt was made to maintain constant ore type throughout the entire test program. Eight specific test conditions were evaluated including three different feed rates (and hence three different size distributions) to flotation. Tables 1 and 2 summarize the eight test conditions and overall recovery results at the end of the rougher bank for each test. A single test consisted of at least three consecutive eight-hour shifts operating at steady-state with composite cell lip samples taken over the final eight-hour shift. This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

As the techniques and resolution for three-dimensional spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional X-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of 10 µm can be achieved with the use of microfocus X-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam X-ray microtomography system was installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility was designed to obtain 2,048 by 2,048-pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind instrument can be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for many applications, such as three-dimensional liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and the air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of X-ray microtomography not only allows for the quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allows, for the textural characterization and determination of phase continuity. This paper presents information regarding the current use of this new facility and a review of potential applications for the advanced analytical system. Doyashiki Concentrator in Hanaoka mine of Dowa Mining Co., Ltd. started the operation in 1943, treating the ore mainly from Doyashiki ore deposits. After the cessation of mining of Doyashiki ore body in 1973, Doyashiki concentrator began to treat the ore from Fukazawa mine instead in the same year, and furthermore the ore from Ezuri mine In 1979. Currently Doyashiki concentrator treats 30,000 tons of ore per month from both mines. The ore treated is complex sulfide ore, called "Kuroko" (black ore), and the principal minerals contained in the ore are chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and barite, accompanied by bornite, tetrahedrite, tennantite, covellite, stromeyerite, argentite, polybasite, pearcite, and electrum. The Principal gangue minerals are quartz, gypsum and clay. The grade of the feed to the concentrator averages 0.9 p/t Au, 110 g/t Ag, 1.1 %Cu, 2.8 %Pb, 9.2 %Zn, 5.0 % Pyrite-S and 13% BaS04. The feed is, after washing and two-stage crushing, ground to 88% minus 200 mesh in a rod mill and ball mills with cyclone classifiers, and five concentrates are recovered by flotation. Primarily copper-lead bulk concentrate is recovered by sulfurous acid-lime flotation method, and then from the bulk concentrate copper concentrate is floated by hot pulp flotation method, sinks being lead concentrate. Zinc concentrate is recovered from the tailing of copper-lead bulk flotation, pyrite concentrate from zinc flotation tailing and barite concentrate from pyrite flotation tailing. The final tailing is sent to the dam.

This is the eighth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for nearly 30 new entries. Several articles and publications have appeared recently that relate to mineral royalty or mineral valuation. R. B. Parsons wrote "Mining agreements, royalties and profits" (CIM Bulletin, November 1988). He distinguished between net smelter return (NSR) and net profit interest (NPI). Parsons used examples to show the difference between these royalty payment methods. Mining Engineering (January 1990) carried an article by H. V. S. Tingley entitled "Using business due diligence to help evaluate mineral deposits." The article identifies some factors that must be examined during mergers or acquisitions in the mining industry. Since each mining operation is unique, each has risks and opportunities that need recognition and evaluation. The author suggests that a team is necessary for a proper evaluation because no one person has expertise in all of the factors that must be examined. Also in January&apos;s Mining Engineering was "Limestone mining: Reserves and valuation," by B. C. Lewis and R. P. Moran. They presented two case studies of valuation of limestone reserves. One was a 109-hm2 (270-acre) parcel in West Virginia and the other a 121-hm2 (300-acre) tract in Alabama. The authors discussed risk, discount rates, and royalty methods as financial parameters in valuation of limestone reserves. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common problem in different areas with a past history of mining activities, which is characterized by low pH (2-4.5) and significant toxic metals concentration. The main aim of the present work was to perform a process feasibility analysis in order to remove heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cu) from AMD (Acid Mine Drainage) in a relatively cheap and environmentally friendly way, by means of electrowinning and biosorption. A first characterization of an Italian AMD sample was performed evidencing a zinc concentration around 2 g/L, cadmium and nickel content of about 4 mg/L, manganese of 85 mg/L and iron 190 mg/L. Electrowinning tests lead to the following metal removal after three hours treatment: Zn 99%, Ni 99.9%, Cd 99.9%, Cu 99%, Mn 87%, Fe 96%. Moreover, an high grade of purity of the metal deposit has been achieved (Zn>95%), as observed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Considering that metals concentration in the effluent was still above legal limits (in particular for Zn, Mn and Fe), a further biosorption treatment was planned in order to produce an effluent fitting environmental limits. Experimental electrowinning tests and literature multimetal column biosorption data have been used in order to perform a preliminary techno-economic feasibility analysis of the process aimed at metal removal from AMD. A treatment cost of about 6.5 ?/m3 AMD has been estimated, for a plant capacity of 10 m3/h AMD inlet flow rate.

For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala&apos;s output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry&apos;s consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum&apos;s price fall since the review was written, the company&apos;s assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year&apos;s reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an attractive area of research in such fields as CO2 mineral carbonation, global warming and sustainable energy systems. In this study, carbonation efficiency for aqueous mineral carbonation (MC) was achieved through two steps,which include leaching of calciumfrom cement kiln dust (CKD) followed by the reaction of pure CO2 with the calcium hydroxide precipitates formed by the hydroxylation using NaOH. Response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box-Behnken design (BBD) was applied to optimize the calciumleaching yield,while the carbonation efficiency from CKD was assessed using RSMwith central composite design (CCD). Optimization of calcium leaching is highly important, as it is a rate-limiting reaction step in MC and also influences and enhances carbonation efficiency. Different parameters including acid concentration (HNO3), leaching temperature, leaching time, and dose of CKD sample were considered in order to optimize the maximum yield of Ca leaching from the CKD sample. In addition, different CO2 flow rates and temperatures were used as parameters for optimizing carbonation efficiency. Two quadratic regression models were developed for each process, i.e. calciumleaching and carbonation. For calcium leaching, a maximum of 98.55% calcium was extracted under the optimal set of acid concentration 4.13 M, 90 °C, 28 min leaching time, and 13.8 g of CKD sample. For carbonation, the maximum carbonation efficiency of 89.2% was achieved for a CO2 flow rate of 1163 cm3/min at 90 °C. Calcium leaching results indicate that the leaching yield was significantly affected by all the input parameters except leaching time. For carbonation, both factors affected the carbonation efficiency, with the effect temperature shown to be greater than that of the CO2 flow rate. Additionally, the predicted results agreed well with the experimental values for both calcium leaching and carbonation processes, with errors of less than 1% and 5%, respectively.

"The drum agglomeration of nickel laterite and gold ores has been optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) using a Taguchi L16 (45) orthogonal array to determine the optimum conditions for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines. The effects of controllable operating factors including moisture content (nickel laterite ore: 34-37%; gold ore: 7-10%), retention time (2-3.5 min), drum speed (15-45% critical speed), drum load (nickel laterite ore: 8-32 %; gold ore: 6-22%) and acid concentration (150-600 g/L) on the performance of the agglomeration process were studied.For nickel laterite ore, maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) occurred under the following conditions: drum load (23.7%), moisture (36.5%), time (3 min), drum speed (30% critical speed) and acid concentration (150 g/L). Under the studied nickel laterite ore conditions, the most effective parameters for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines were found to be drum load and acid concentration, respectively. Drum speed had a statistically significant effect on minimizing the amount of fines. Maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) for gold ore occurred under the following conditions: drum load (19.3%), moisture (8.5%), time (2 min 15 s) and drum speed (40% critical). The most significant factors for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines for gold ore were found to be drum load, time and moisture.IntroductionSeveral heap leach operations have experienced problems in terms of poor recovery due to percolation issues caused by low-grade complex ores, tailings and clayey deposits. Poor percolation can lead to low metal extraction due to solution channeling or the development of impermeable/dead zones within the heap (Dhawan et al., 2012; Kappes, 2005). Improper heap building practices such as the use of loose agglomerates and inadequate attention toward the presence of clay minerals have been among the main reasons for percolation issues. During the transport of ore material, severe segregation of the material can occur. To overcome percolation problems, a major improvement was made through the introduction of agglomeration prior to ore placement. If the ore particles and agglomerates are of similar size, segregation can be avoided to a great extent (Dhawan et al., 2013; Kinard and Schweizer, 1987; McClelland and van Zyl, 1988). Agglomeration improves the uniform percolation of solution through ore heaps and is applicable to many ores, wastes and milled tailings (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013). Manning and Kappes (2005) reported agglomeration/ stacking accounts for ~14% of the total heap leaching operating cost. The cost of binder is a primary contributor toward the total cost. Also, the lack of consistent quality control tests for agglomerate often leads to operational problems. The details are mentioned elsewhere (Dhawan et al., 2013). Considering the significant contribution of the agglomeration/stacking step toward the total heap leach operating cost, it is appropriate to study the agglomeration behavior and its optimization for two different ores. The reason to study the same parameters for different ores is the fact that significant variability in the agglomeration behavior of different ores has been reported to exist in industrial operations."

An algorithm used by the US Coast Guard to find lost objects is utilized to optimally allocate exploration efforts during initial stages of an exploration program. Based on classical search theory, the algorithm assumes a target probability distribution function, a detection func¬tion, and a cost function. The three Junctions are analogous to delineating areas of possible mineralization, choice of exploration methods, and exploration budget. Application of the algorithm is shown for a hypothetical target distribution. Using the maximum number of field days available as the cost function, the optimal allocation of effort is shown for different exploration methods, e.g. electromagnetic survey and induced polarization. The adaption of the algorithm for the exploration process is discussed.

The objectives of this generic study were to use numerical modeling techniques to determine under what conditions seismic waves generated by an earthquake might cause instability to an underground opening, or cause fracturing and joint movement that would lead to an increase in the permeability of the rock mass. In general, the study showed that moderate earthquakes (up to 0.41 g) did not cause instability of the tunnel or major fracturing of the rock mass. An artificial rock-burst tremor with high accelerations, however, was found to be amplified around the tunnel, and fracturing occurred as a result of the seismic loading in salt and granite. In shale, even moderate seismic loading resulted in tunnel collapse.
