Cyanide is one of the most used reagents in the precious metal extraction process; as well as the most efficient from the point of view of the dissolution process; but it is also a toxic product that requires a lot of care in handling. Likewise, the residual solutions of the process must be followed because they can be a risk of contamination of water, animals and human health. In the artisanal processes of obtaining gold and silver, neutralization of the residual solutions is used to passivate the present cyanide. During this process ammonium cyanate is formed which decomposes rapidly in the presence of air and sunlight in carbon dioxide and ammonia gas, contributing to the greenhouse effect. In this work the use of the ammonium cyanate obtained in the process of neutralization of the cyanide solutions as a reagent to obtain urea is proposed. Urea was obtained indirectly through the use of the reagent kit UREA/BUN-COLOR. The process is effective at pH ≤ 4.5 with a rapid increase in solution temperature, and addition of hydrogen peroxide. The urea crystals begin to form at 50°C. The cyanide / urea ratio obtained was 1 / 7.5 INTRODUCTION In the processes of extractive gold metallurgy, the use of cyanide leaching is perhaps the most widely used method worldwide; by the ease of operation, its low cost and high levels of precious metal recovery. However, neutralization, in most processing plants, is not done properly, and leftovers of solution with free cyanide are dumped in concentrations harmful to the environment, in particular animals and humans. Cyanide can enter surface water through releases from industries using cyanides. Due to its high toxicity, the presence of cyanide in water is a matter of great concern (Jawale et al., 2017). The pollution generated by the effluents from the leaching of gold ores is one of the main obstacles of social opposition presented by mining activity due to the impact of both surface and groundwater. During the cyanide decomposition process, a compound known as ammonium cyanate OCN(NH4), which is a raw material for the manufacture of urea, CO(NH2)2 is generated. In the case of good neutralization, cyanide is no longer a toxic compound through oxidizing reagents, but as a result, there is the generation and emission of ammonia and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, generating both a greenhouse effect (Gómez, 2012). This is evidenced by the strong effervescence of the reaction, and a penetrating smell of ammonia, which can irritate respiratory mucous membranes and eyes; however because they are greenhouse gases they are considered pollutants.

"Anglo American operates 18 Weir GEHO piston diaphragm pumps (PD) in the two pump stations of the 52-km (32-mile) long Minas Rio iron ore concentrate pipeline. The pipeline is designed to transport 26.5 Mt/a (29.2 million stpy) of concentrate from the mine to the export terminal at the coast.During the commissioning of the pipeline in the fall of 2014, high pressure pulsation levels were experienced, with peak-to-peak levels as high as 20 bar. Based on pressure readings it was concluded that hydraulic resonances were present in the system, which were excited by the third and sixth harmonic of the flow pulsation generated by the pumps.Based on this observation, Weir Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO PD slurry pumps, recommended installing a phase shift controller that controls the phase shift between the crankshafts of the individual pumps, thereby minimizing the effect of the hydraulic resonances.GEHO piston diaphragm pumps and pressure pulsation analysisPiston diaphragm pumps are used worldwide to transport abrasive and/or aggressive slurries against high discharge pressures in the mining, mineral processing and power industries. The basic operating principle of a piston diaphragm pump is shown in Fig. 1.A crankshaft is driven by an external electric motor via a gearbox. The crank mechanism transfers the rotating motion of the crankshaft into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The piston displaces a hydraulic fluid, called the propeling liquid, which displaces an elastic rubber diaphragm. When the piston moves to the right, the pressure in the pump chamber drops below the suction pressure and the nonreturn valve on the suction side will open, allowing the pumped fluid to flow into the pump chamber. When the piston moves to the left, the fluid is compressed, and when the pump chamber pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the nonreturn valve on the discharge side will open allowing a displacement of fluid into the discharge line. The main objective of the diaphragm is to isolate the piston and the drive mechanism from the abrasive and/or aggressive fluid and create a hermetic seal between the pumped fluid and the ambient environment. Piston diaphragm pumps as shown in Fig. 1 are among the largest positive displacement pumps in the world and have been produced with stroke volumes of up to 100 L (26 gal) per pump chamber for flow rates up to 800 m3/h, discharge pressures up to 250 bar and hydraulic outputs over 2 MW per unit (van Rijswick et al., 2010)."

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life.A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the National Pollutant Discharge Elemenation System (NPDES) permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L.The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis (RO) reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a zero liquid waste (ZLW) facility.The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/L regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 795 m3/h (5 million gpd) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes RO membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A water impact index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an onsite landfill. Currently, the plant is treating at an average flow of 490 m3/h (3.1 million gpd) of mine water with an average influent chloride concentration of 1,530 mg/L and an average effluent chloride concentration of 11 mg/L."

"During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

"INTRODUCTION Vanadium deposits in Arizona are distributed all across the state, from the rim of the Grand Canyon to the Tombstone mining district in the southeast corner of the state (Figure 1). The combined past production of vanadium from Arizona and New Mexico ranks second nationwide, after deposits in the Colorado Plateau In the northeast corner of the state, in the Carrizo Mountains and Monument Valley of Apache and Navajo Counties, vanadium was produced as a by-product of uranium in deposits of the Salt Wash and Shinarump members of the Morrison and Chinle formations, respectively. The production took place between 1943 and 1970. Another source of vanadium in Arizona occurs in vanadate deposits associated with supergene enrichment of base-metal vein and replacement deposits. The most important vanadate mineral is vanadinite, a chloro-vanadate of lead. Presently, there are no primary mines of vanadium in the United States. In 2012, a small production of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) was reported as a by-product of uranium at the White Mesa uranium mine in Utah1. This paper describes vanadate deposits in Arizona with emphasis in three districts, namely, the Mammoth, Globe-Miami and Banner districts.VANADIUM EPIGENETIC DEPOSITS: VANADATES Almost all vanadium epigenetic deposits occur as vanadates in oxidized zones of lead, zinc and copper veins and replacement deposits. Vanadinite, descloizite and mottramite are the most common minerals in vanadate deposits. Descloizite is a vanadate of lead, zinc and copper. Wulfenite, a molybdate of lead is also present. These minerals replace supergene base-metal minerals, form crusts on faces of open cavities, or are inter-grown with residual clays in pockets. The vanadium content in vanadate deposits is believed to have been leached from the country rock by ground-water and transported through porous rocks until precipitating as a relatively insoluble vanadium compound or until the solution evaporated. Precipitation was brought about by local concentrations of cations of divalent lead, zinc or copper. Lead is a constituent part of almost all of vanadate deposits and the vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) content in vanadate minerals seems to have a direct correlation with the content of lead in the hypogene mineral. Vanadate deposits are restricted almost entirely to the oxidized parts of vein or replacement deposits. It is rare that oxidized zones extend past 100 ft from the surface. Vanadate deposits are largely restricted to tropical and temperate zones and regions of dry climate. Arizona and New Mexico have the largest concentration of vanadate deposits in North America."

The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. "INTRODUCTION It can be vital that bolted joints holding subassemblies together remain secure. Bolts should resist the loosening effects of vibrations and dynamic loads yet need to be easily removable during maintenance. When a threaded fastener is subjected to vibration, the rapid movement causes a lowering of friction against the threads and a subsequent loss of preload. The loss of preload allows the fastener to vibrate loose and possibly fall out. As the diameter of fasteners increase desired preload becomes increasingly more difficult to achieve. Input torque requirements for achieving proper bolt preload is exponentially related to any given fasteners diameter. This means that specialized tooling or bolting practices are usually required to attempt the tightening of fasteners to reach their required preload. Traditional methods can cause problems with joint integrity and do not provide consistent bolt load across the bolted surface. BOLTED CONNECTIONS A failed critical bolted joint can lead to high maintenance costs, machine downtime, and risk to worker safety. Control of the clamp load in a bolted joint is vital. However, when faced with a problem joint, it is not surprising that the design engineer will not have an answer if asked about the clamp load. Torque calculations must always be based on the existing conditions that often are vague. Unless all parameters are correct, the calculation will be unreliable. Examples of parameters are: • Thread condition of the fasteners • Hardness of contact surface • Material (steel, aluminium, copper, etc.) • Extra friction from a locking fastener • Extra friction from an adhesive • Lubricant on the thread • Type of bolt head (flanged, regular or serrated) • Surface coating of the bolt • New or reused fastener During tightening, bolts are subjected to both tensile and torsional stress. The total stress in a bolt can be calculated using the formula: Total stress = vsx2 + 3txy2 In order to maximize the desired tensile stress (sx) it is vital to minimize the torsional stress (txy). Tensile stress (clamp load) is achieved when the bolt is axially elongated. Unwanted torsional stress (twisting) in bolts arises during tightening due to thread friction. High thread friction increases torsional stress and causes yielding at lower clamp load levels than normal. A lubricant is necessary to minimize the malign torsional stress. However, many commonly used bolt-locking systems are based on increased thread friction (deformed nuts, adhesives, etc). To minimize thread friction and concurrently safely secure the joint has often incorrectly been considered impossible. The use of locking systems that increase thread friction is the single most common reason why the full capacity of bolted joints is not utilized. The following example illustrates the problem."

"The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is implementing its $2.6 billion DC Clean Rivers Project to reduce combined sewer overflows to the District’s receiving waterbodies and mitigate chronic sewer flooding in District neighborhoods. The First Street Tunnel project is a major component of the DC Clean Rivers Project, designed to mitigate sewer flooding and basement backups in the District’s historic and densely populated Bloomingdale neighborhood. Bloomingdale has been historically affected by sewer flooding and was severely impacted by four storms in the summer of 2012 that caused significant damage to homes, the environment and public property. As a result, DC Water accelerated the design and construction of the First Street Tunnel in order to mitigate the effect storms have on the undersized sewers serving the neighborhood. The infrastructure designed to mitigate flooding, including the tunnel, are located within the highly urbanized neighborhood – with some structures being less than ten feet from residents front door steps. The success of a large public works project of this magnitude and in this unique location depends on a well informed and supportive public. With the local community impacted by flooding but concerned about heavy construction impacts, this paper details the components of a successful public outreach plan and lessons learned throughout the design and construction process. Early identification of community mitigation, working cooperatively with stakeholders and frequent dissemination of accurate information required the project team to establish a culture of problem solving collaboration with the community. BACKGROUND Chronic Flooding in the Northeast Boundary Sewershed The Northeast Boundary sewershed, in which the Bloomingdale neighborhood is located, is served primarily by a combined sewer system and has a long history of chronic flooding problems during moderate to severe storm events. The sewer system that serves the Northeast Boundary drainage area was constructed by the Federal Government in the late 1800's when developed areas of the District terminated at what is now Florida Avenue. Since construction of the system, population within the sewershed area has grown at an exponential rate. In meeting the growing needs of the population, the District experienced development that transformed previously low-density rural areas into new communities. Impervious areas have increased drastically since the sewer system was constructed and consequently, the existing sewer system does not have the capacity to convey storms with return frequencies beyond the 2-year storm without flooding. As a result of the capacity limitations, many of the low-lying areas have become chronic flooding areas due to the surcharging of sewers."

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

INTRODUCTION Las Vegas has recently been termed the “Construction Capital of the Country”. It has also been acknowledged as the fastest growing city in the country for several years running. The rapid growth improves the economic picture of the region but it also imparts unusual demands on the area’s infrastructure. In 1994 the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA)was working on a master plan to address the rapid growth. A long range analysis revealed the need for additional water treatment capacity and delivery systems. Short term projections showed that the current system would reach capacity in the summer of 1997 with the possibility of demand exceeding the supply. The River Mountains Tunnel #2 is part of a $150M scheme to quickly upgrade the system to meet the short term demand, improve the overall system operation and allow for a smooth transition into the larger additions being planned for the future. The SNWA selected Carollo/Black & Veatch (CBV) to provide detailed design and construction management for the upgrades. The River Mountains Contracts consisted of five separate contracts broken out separately to stream line a very aggressive (just 34 months) design and construction schedule. Necessary work included four miles of excavated and lined tunnel, connections from existing pipelines to and from the new tunnel including large diameter (to 3.66m(144 in)) valves, a 18 927cu m (5 million gal) regulating reservoir, a surge tank and a 170 343cu m (45 million gal) reservoir to add additional storage to the system. Notice to Proceed was given to Kajima Engineering and Construction (Kajima) on May22, 1995 for the construction of the River Mountains Tunnel #2. The design called for a tunnel to be driven 6070m (19 915ft) in rock and lined to a finished diameter of 3.71m (12.17ft).Excavation began on December 14, 1995 and holed through on April 30, 1996. Lining began on June 25, 1996 and a notice of Substantial Completion was issued on December 13,1996. This paper describes the measures taken to complete the tunnel in 18 months from Notice to Proceed to Substantial Completion. THE RIVER MOUNTAINS SITE The River Mountains are a low range of rugged mountains separating the Las Vegas Valley from its main supply of water, the Colorado River at Lake Mead. They are volcanic in origin and the harsh desert environment has left them as expanses of exposed bedrock rising 305m (1000ft) above the valley with little or no vegetation. An existing 3.05m (10ft)

BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) Geometric mean exposures of 13 job groups ranged from 12 to 80 ppb. In a New Mexico potash mine, (Attfield, et al. , 1982) exposures of from 100 to 3300 ppb nitrogen dioxide

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world's vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel's strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.

The US Bureau of Mines' dictionary of mining terms defines productivity as "the efficiency with which economic resources (men, material, and machines) are employed to produce goods and services." Or, the relationship between the physical outputs and the physical inputs used to produce those outputs. As demand for mine materials dropped, mining companies and equipment manufacturers discovered that ratios between the inputs and the final products were disproportionate to the profits realized. Some companies are fighting for survival. The US, while still the most productive country in the world in absolute terms, is looking over its shoulder as other industrialized nations continue to exceed its yearly productive growth rate. According to John Belcher, Jr., of the American Productivity Center in Houston, TX, the US has seen a steady decrease in productivity growth since the mid-1960s. During the post World War II period, the US labor productivity growth rate was 3.2% annually. The slowdown began in 1965 and by the mid-1970s, the country's annual growth rate was 1%. By 1978, labor productivity growth ceased to gain at all and from 1978 to 1980 a 2% decline occurred. Solutions to the productivity decrease are increasing product prices or improving productivity. By increasing prices, though, the producer runs the risk of pricing himself out of the competitive market. To maintain an acceptable profit level, prices must increase proportionately higher than required to offset production cost increases, Belcher says. Many companies are turning to in-house productivity improvement programs as an answer to increased costs and declining profits. These programs are geared toward management commitment and employee awareness of what productivity means. Companies are finding ways of measuring productivity levels in financial reporting, budgeting, and planning. Organizational teams have been formed to coordinate activities and oversee product management, and improve productivity of materials and capital investments. This special issue of Mining Engineering examines productivity in the mining industry. First, there are articles about various, and different, factors that affect productivity in each of ME's five main readership areas - exploration, mining, processing, coal, and industrial minerals. There is also a look at mining industry productivity from the manufacturer's view. The next section of this special issue is devoted to some topics that affect all areas and sectors of mining: research, management practices, computers, maintenance, and energy management. Then follows case studies in exploration, coal, and iron and steel. These studies provide examples of practices and strategies used by companies and operations to boost productivity.

Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite's use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

The city of Indianapolis has more than 25,000 homes currently on septic systems. Many of these systems do not function well because of their age and surrounding soil conditions. As Indianapolis has worked to eliminate septic systems and install sanitary sewers in large unsewered areas on the north-west side, capacity of the existing Belmont North Interceptor (BNI) became a concern. The BNI system currently services an area of approximately 80 km2 (31 sq miles) located within the northwest quadrant of the city (Fig. 1). Monitoring of the existing interceptor indicated portions of the sys-tem flowing half- to two-thirds full during dry weather conditions and surcharging during some wet weather conditions. Further analysis of the BNI based on growth projections coupled with increased sewershed yield resulting from the city?s septic tank elimination program (STEP) indicated dry-weather flows could potentially triple over the next 20 years. A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

The 1997 New Year’s Day Rogue River flood near Medford, Oregon, USA, entered historic channels, eroded a 150-foot-wide buffer, and captured an inactive gravel pond located within the channel migration zone. Channel redirection caused by pit captures threatened adjacent inactive gravel ponds. In response to this capture, a stakeholders group of concerned individuals and organizations was formed. This group ultimately developed a rehabilitation plan, which conformed to the Rogue River’s geomorphic trends. A two-dimensional model, FLO-2D, was used to evaluate channel splits, flood storage, backwater, and future conditions. Modeling results coupled with trend analysis were used to create a stable design where stream barbs, gravel redistribution, a channel outfall spillway, bendway weirs, bank reshaping, and revegetation were integrated into a single plan for a three-mile reach. The quick action by the stakeholders group averted further damage to the Rogue River system and surrounding environment. The project has preserved three miles of mainstem habitat, one mile of side channel habitat, and protected ten gravel ponds from pit capture.
