Most coillillercial processing applications employing mixers in various types of slurry systems are continuous flow. These applications may also be multiple stage, with the stage number varying anywhere from two or three to ten or more. Two questions that usually come up at the beginning of any proposed pilot plant study are (1) can the pilot plant unit be operated batch-wise, and the results extrapolated both on the basis of scale and fluid motion to the full-scale tank which will be continuous-flow (and probably multi-stage), or (2) does the pilot plant need to be operated in a continuous-flow fashion, and if so, does the exact number of tanks/stages that are proposed for the plant need to be used in the pilot plant? We will consider these possibilities in sequence and present the principles involved in running some of the various pilot-plant arrangements.

Coeur Rochester Inc. located in north central Nevada, operates an open pit mine moving a total of 16 - 18 million short tons of material per year. A three stage crusher produces approximately 8 million tons of a minus half inch product that utilizes truck stacking to construct a heap leach with a zinc precipitation recov­ery plant. Coeur Rochester recovers approximately 6.0 - 7.0 MM ounces of silver and 60 - 80 K ounces of gold annually. Current metal prices and good operating practices require contin­ued review of operating systems that support the operation, thus the development of a Strategic Mine Plan. This Strategic Mine Plan provides managers, engineers and supervisors a means to improve their operations through three main objectives: 1. Reduce operating costs, 2 .. Increase production, 3. Increase mine life (reserves). These three main objectives will be reviewed in context to their current status and past performance.

Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid-H2SO5) is used to destroy cyanides in tailings slurries due to its rapid reaction and low capital and operating costs. Due to its instability, Caro's acid is generated at the mine site using a hot or cold process. The majority of gold mines that use Caro's acid use the FMC hot process. In the FMC hot process, it is not necessary to cool the Caro's acid to minimize decomposition since it is used immediately upon generation. In contrast, the cold process uses a chiller to cool the raw materials and product. This paper will show, using laboratory and field data, that there is virtually no difference in Caro's acid yield between the cold and the FMC hot processes. Caro's acid yield depends on the mole ratio and concentration of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and is independent of operating temperature.

This paper focus on the productivity, cost efficiency and training programmes that have enable RPM to rank as a world class operation in production efficiency and safety achievements. The first step was to commit all senior managers to implementing the NOSA Industrial Safety System based on Management by Objectives. This focused the workforce in a specific, results-driven direction which greatly promoted subsequent performance improvements. The early operations concentrated on increasing throughput via process simplification and removal of bottlenecks. Efforts were simultaneously directed to environment, health and safety as a means to improving the quality of operations. In the last two years, improvements in mining and in-tailings dam management have further improved the cost competitiveness of RPM such as to assure its future in treating the remaining CTBl ore reserves. Promissing progress is being made in developing a viable process to exploit a remaining large resource of B2 mineralisation.

Homestake Mining Company has identified a significant native sulfur resource at its Cinnabar Canyon prospect in Mono County, California. Elemental sulfur occurs as replacements, fracture coatings and breccia fillings in a thick sequence of Miocene-Pliocene intermediate volcanic rocks. The deposit extends along a northwest trending regional fault and measures approximately 900' in width, at least 1800' in length, and has a thickness in excess of 200'. The deposit lies approximately 150' below the surface and is covered by a silicified cap of volcaniclastic strata. The deposit has been delineated by rotary and core drilling. Utilizing a grade cutoff of 5% elemental sulfur, the delineated deposit has a probablelpossible resource of 16.1 million tons of ore averaging 17.9% elemental sulfur containing 2.57 million long tons sulfur. Assay grades within the resource area range up to 40% sulfur over a 40-foot intercept.

Perlite is rhyolitic glass with 2 to 5 percent by weight (wt.%) bound water held within the silicic-glass structure. It is often distinguished by vitreous, pearly luster and concentric perlitic fractures ("onionskin"). Occurrences worldwide are associated with Tertiary to middle Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite is in silicic domes, plugs, laccoliths, flows, vitric tephra, chill margins of dikes and sills, and welded ash-flow tuffs. It is a hydrated volcanic glass formed through secondary alteration of obsidian by the incorporation of water into the glass/silica structure. Post-emplacement hydration (weathering) of cooled glasses by meteoric water is the principal alteration process, but some hydration by magmatic or meteoric water during or shortly after emplacement, or hydration by water exsolved during cooling may occur. Commercial "perlite" is any volcanic glass that expands or "pops" when heated quickly to plasticity while evolving steam and thus forming a lightweight, frothy material. The expansion temperature typically ranges from 1,100 to 1,500°F. An expanded volume increase of 10 to 40 times the original volume yields expanded densities of 1.5 to 11 pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft3). Perlite is mined by eight companies at 10 operations in six western states. New Mexico accounts for more than 80% of the total tonnage mined. The rest comes from Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Nevada. In 1992, domestic production was 571,000 short tons (st), domestic apparent consumption was 591,000 st, and the value of crude perlite was $15.3 million. In 1991, with about the same production and price of crude perlite, the gross value for expanded perlite was $101.7 million. Perlite exports in 1992, primarily to Canada, are estimated an 30,000 st; and imports, from Greece, are an estimated 50,000 st. In 1992, 70 plants in 33 states expanded crude perlite. Construction uses of expanded perlite accounted for 66% of total domestic sales. Expanded perlite used as filter aid accounted for 15%. All other markets, including use as a filler and in agriculture, accounted for 19%. Leading states for expanding perlite, ranked by order of sales, were Mississippi, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and Georgia. Domestic perlite encounters transportation disadvantages in some areas of the eastern United States compared to perlite imported from Greece. However, western U.S. perlite exports to Canada offset this in large part, and net import reliance for perlite is about 3% of domestic consumption. Perlite grab samples were tested at the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Minerals Resources (NMBMMR) for their basic suitability in horticulture, construction, filter aids, and fillers/extenders using Perlite Institute techniques modified by the NMBMMR. Most commercial perlite ranged from 2.5 to 3.0 wt.% bound water for all major types (classical, granular, and pumiceous). Expanded density varied widely, but the lowest density of 1.9 lbs/ft3 was for granular. Average brightness of expanded perlite was 47.6 to 69.3%. Nonexpansibles, commonly obsidian or "dead" perlite, ranged from 18 wt.% to less than 1 wt.%, with granular perlte generally the lowest. Compacted density was not related to either perlite type or nonexpansibles present. Sieve analyses of the -50+100 mesh product showed that, in general, pumiceous perlite produces more fines and classical and granular perlite average 60 to 80% -30+100 mesh after expansion. Samples were tested for crystalline silica that ranged from below the detection limit of 0.5 wt.% to nearly 0.2 wt.%, but most tested below 0.5 wt.%. Although quartz content can be lowered in the expanded product by the expansion process, producers can further lower crystalline silica in the product by mixing low-quartz crude with high-quartz perlite before expansion. Chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence confirms the rhyolitic composition of perlite, but indicates that surface weathering may increase the concentration of some elements, such as potassium and calcium, by infilling cracks or fissures developed during or after perlite emplacement.

Overview Coal production in the first half of 1982 remained near the high levels begun in mid-1981. Production then fell sharply during the latter part of the year due to recession-weakened demand. Even so, 1982 coal production was estimated at 756 Mt (833.4 million st), a record high that exceeded 1980's previous production record of 752.7 Mt (829.7 million st). Though 1982 coal production was substantially below industry expectations, the attained production represented a modest achievement in view of the recession's severity. In 1982, the gross national product declined 1.8%, its worst performance in 36 years. The recession, along with mild weather, improved energy efficiency, and conservation efforts caused the nation's energy use to drop 4.1%. With the iron and steel, construction, and auto industries experiencing production declines, industrial energy use fell 10.8%. The extent to which the nation's economic slump affected coal markets in 1982 varied: • total domestic coal use declined 3.4%; • exports remained strong for most of the year; • electric utility coal use declined for the first time in 25 years; • coal use at coke plants declined by one-third; and • coal use in other industrial sectors stayed surprisingly near the 1981 level. Coal Use Domestic coal use totaled 641.8 Mt (707.5 million st) in 1982,22 .9 Mt (25.2 million st) below the 1981 level. Nearly all the decline occurred at coke plants where use dropped to 37.1 Mt (40.9 million st) in 1982 from 55.3 Mt (61 million st) in 1981. The decline in all other industrial and electric utility coal markets was only 5.3 Mt (5.8 million st). Residential and commercial coal use increased 635 kt (700,000 st) to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) from 6.7 Mt (7.4 million st). Power generation decreased 2.3% in 1982, the first year since 1945 that output failed to increase. The decline was due to a drop in industrial demand. Electricity sales to residential, commercial, and other nonindustrial users increased slightly. But coal's competitive position stayed strong. Power generation from oil and natural gas fell 28.9% and 11.7%, respectively. Power generation from coal declined only 0.9%. Among the primary energy sources, coal fueled 53.2% of US electric power generated in 1982, compared with 52.4% in 1981. In 1982, US steel production declined to 66.1 Mt (72.9 million st), the lowest level in 50 years and down from 109.6 Mt (120.8 million st) in 1981. The reduced steel demand forced 13 coke plants to shut down. Coal Exports Coal exports in 1982 totaled 96.4 Mt (106.3 million st), 5.7 Mt (6.3 million st) less than in 1981. Despite the worldwide recession and above normal coal stockpiles in many countries, exports were higher than many expected. This showed the relatively strong US position in international coal trade. The US continued to export near-record coal tonnages despite increasingly competitive influences. These included an improvement in Australia's labor difficulties, the return of Polish coal to Western European markets, and lower oil prices. In 1982, US port facilities were improved and expanded, and more efficient methods for scheduling foreign vessels were implemented. As a result, high volume coal shipments to US ports were routinely loaded and dispatched unhampered by bottlenecks that plagued East Coast ports in 1981. Appalachian coalfield production declined 1.4% from 1981 output and 3.9% from 1980 output. The interior region of the US showed an increase of 7.8% in production. This was primarily because of a

INTRODUCTION The two basic types of mine-air compressors are the positive-displacement compressors and the dynamic compressors. Positive-displacement compressors con¬fine successive volumes of air within a closed space and increase the pressure by reducing the volume of that space. Reciprocating and rotary compressors operate on this principle. Dynamic compressors utilize an impeller to acceler¬ate the air, with the increased air velocity converted to pressure through a stationary diffuser. Centrifugal compressors and turbocompressors operate on this principle. Reciprocating Compressors Reciprocating compressors include both single-stage and multistage units. For mine service the most com¬mon is the two-stage intercooled compressor having an atmospheric pressure intake and a discharge pressure of 689 to 861 kPa (100 to 125 psi). The cylinders of a reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting. In the single-acting cylinder, compression occurs on only one side of the piston, while, in double¬acting cylinders, compression occurs on both sides of the piston. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a typical two-stage double-acting water-cooled reciprocat¬ing compressor. Fig. 2 illustrates the sequence of opera¬tions occurring in the cylinder of a reciprocating com¬pressor. Most modern mine compressors are double acting and are driven by electric motors. Induction motors are used on low-powered compressors, and synchronous motors are used on larger compressors. Steam-driven compressors once were common and still are applied where a reliable source of low-cost steam is available. For this type of compressor, steam is a desirable power source since a governor that senses the discharge pres¬sure can be used to control the steam inlet. This can be used to regulate the compressor speed to compress only air sufficient to meet the mine's requirements (up to the capacity of the unit). Unlike a constant-speed electric¬driven compressor, no other regulation is required for the cylinders of a steam-driven unit. Rotary Compressors Rotary compressors include sliding-vane, liquid¬piston, two-impeller straight-lobe or cycloidal, and helical-lobe units. Each of these has specific advantages and applications. Of these, the helical-lobe or "screw" compressor has the greatest application for supplying "100-lb air" [689 kPa (100 psi) ] to small- and medium¬size underground mines. Fig. 3 illustrates the operation of a sliding-vane compressor. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of a helical lobe or screw compressor. Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of a two-impeller straight-lobe compressor. Fig. 6 illustrates the operation of a liquid¬piston compressor. Centrifugal Compressors Centrifugal compressors deliver 0.94 m3/s (2000 cfm) or more of air, and they are best suited to supply¬ing large volumes of compressed air for base loads. The efficiency of a centrifugal compressor declines rapidly when its operation deviates from its design point. If the power cost is not a critical consideration, a centrif¬ugal compressor is attractive as a result of the low initial and installation costs and the high degree of reliability. Fig. 7 illustrates a typical four-stage centrif¬ugal compressor, and Fig. 8 is a cross section of this type of unit. COMPRESSOR SELECTION The process of selecting a compressor requires sev¬eral considerations, including the capacity, the control system, the location, the power supply, and the cooling provisions. Compressor Capacity To determine the required capacity, the total air quantity and pressure requirements must be calculated. The air consumption of various tools, as listed in Table 1, must be included in this calculation. Some of the other considerations include: 1) The correction factor for altitude, as listed in Table 2, must be included in the calculation. While pneumatic tools require additional compressed air as the altitude increases, the compressor produces less. 2) A correction factor must be incorporated for the use of multiple tools. Table 3 lists appropriate correc¬tion factors for rock drills.

Refractories, called the Hidden Industry by The Refractories Institute, provide the temperature and chemically resistant linings for the multitude of vessels that are used today in high temperature processes ranging from giant iron-making blast furnaces to industrial incinerators to petrochemical cracking units to the smallest furnaces used by the jewelry trade. While these refractory linings are absolutely essential to the proper functioning of these processes, the linings are almost always on the inside of the vessels and thus hidden from the eyes of the public. Refractories are defined in Standard C71 of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), titled "Standard Definitions of Terms Relating to Refractories," as "nonmetallic materials having those chemical and physical properties that make them applicable for structures, or as components of systems, that are exposed to environments above 1 000°F (538°C)." This criterion of ability to withstand exposure to environments above 538OC is the critical distinction separating refractories from other ceramics, fibers, and coatings applicable only at lower temperatures. In addition to resisting temperature, the refractories must with- stand abrasion, chemical and slag attack, resist thermal shock, and carry sustained structural stresses at high operating temperatures for as long as years. The most common methods of classifying refractories are by forming method and composition. First are the traditional formed and fired bricks, batts, and the associated multitude of special shapes. These refractories are usually formed at room temperature, dried, and then fired to high temperatures to develop the final properties desired. Other formed refractories are chemically bonded or resin or tar bonded. To complete the formed refractory matrix, some fired refractory bricks and shapes are subsequently impregnated with resins or tars. Physical dimensions of these formed refractories are classified into two general categories: standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those in common usage in the United States described in ASTM Standard C909 "Dimensions of a Modular Series of Refractory Brick and Shapes" based on the 38 mm basic module as described in ASTM Standard C861 "Determining Metric Dimensions of Standard Series Refractory Brick and Shapes." The most common size is the "9-inch straight" 228 x 114 x 64 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in.) of the "2 ½ -inch" series or 228 x 114 x 76 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 3 in.) of the "3-inch" series. Bricks of nonstandard sizes are referred to as special shapes. Their use is required in specific furnaces for particular requirements or applications. In addition there is the large and growing group of refractories sold as unshaped mixtures that may be formed into their final shapes at the application site. These unshaped mixtures are sometimes referred to as specialties. The mixtures are prepared to be hydraulically cast, plastic or wet rammed, dry rammed, or dry vibrated into their final shapes. Some are designed to be projected through nozzles (or gunned) onto their forms. The refractory mortars used to lay up the shaped refractories fall into this group referred to as specialties. Prepared refractory grains also are sold. These are usually calcined or fused materials that are subsequently crushed and sized to a variety of specific carefully controlled grain sizes or size distributions. These grains include calcined fire clay, dead burned magnesite, periclase (fused magnesia), dead burned dolomite, kyanite, tabular and fused aluminas, fused zirconia, fused mullite, and calcined alumina-magnesia spinel. The primary composition groups of refractories are the 1) alumino-silicate refractories made largely from fire clay and high- alumina materials, 2) silica refractories made from quartzites and ganisters, and 3) basic refractories from magnesia (or magnesite) and chromia (also referred to as chrome ore), alone and in combination, and dolomite. Special refractories include carbon, zirconia, zircon, high purity alumina, mullite, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and some borides. In addition there are groups of special insulating refractories.

INTRODUCTION Variations of cut-and-fill stoping are the most com¬monly used methods for mining narrow, nearly vertical veins in the United States. These methods offer the best results for maximum recovery with minimum dilution of ore from veins that are irregular along either the strike or dip. The vein is developed along the strike length in 61 to 122-m (200 to 400-ft) blocks or stopes and vertical lifts of 48 to 61 m (160 to 200 ft). The level development is either on the vein or parallel to the vein with crosscuts intersecting the vein at right angles. Chutes, manways, and haulageways are established in the center of the stopes at the lower level of the ore block. Mining then proceeds by blasting down horizon¬tal cuts of the vein in both directions from the chutes. As the blasting continues to the outer limits of the stope, the broken ore is slushed into chutes. When a complete horizontal cut has been made, the service raise, including chutes, is raised to a height of a few feet from the back and the stope is filled with either sand fill or waste rock. Then the mining cycle is re¬peated until the stope reaches the level above. LEVEL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOROVERHAND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The two basic methods used are: the development of the haulage drift within the vein, or development of the haulage drift paralleling the vein in the foot or hang¬ing wall with crosscuts intersecting the vein perpendicu¬larly at 61 to 122-m (200 to 400-ft) intervals. The il¬lustrated methods of development show some of the variations which can be used to develop a stope block. Development for cut-and-fill stoping does not require the more elaborate schemes outlined for shrinkage or sublevel long-hole stoping. Many factors must be considered before deciding on a particular development plan and usually the nature of the vein or host rock will dictate which specific method to use. If the vein is relatively straight, then develop¬ment on the vein is feasible. Excessive ground pressures will necessitate the leaving of a sill pillar (Fig. la) and highly fractured or "heavy" ground will require timber¬ing (Fig. 1b). Development on the vein has the advan¬tage of reducing capital outlay and waste handling prob¬lems since the mined rock has value. But removal of the sill pillar is costly and time-consuming. Also, where no sill pillar is left, excessive timbering and subsequent level repair is a drawback. Development in either the footwall or hanging wall is the more common procedure and offers greater flexi¬bility in overall development of consecutive stoping blocks by partially disassociating the level development from stoping (Fig. 2). Chutes, manways, and service compartments com¬prise the next stage of development and are established in a variety of ways. They provide access to the stope, ventilation ducts, and muck removal. Several different development systems are in common use and average costs for each have been developed. Raise borers are used to establish ventilation and ac¬cess from level to level. They are normally reamed with 1.5 or 1.8-m (5 or 6-ft) cutterhead and may either be left bald or lined with a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam corrugated liner plate, depending upon ground conditions. The use of an Alimak raise climber is another effec¬tive method of driving a raise from level to level. The size usually is 2 m (7 ft) square. This will accommodate square-set timber which is later installed. This method of raising is not common, although it is a valuable tech¬nique especially when level spacing is several hundred feet.

Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

INTRODUCTION Lead and zinc are today rightly regarded as sister metals. Historically, however, they differ markedly with lead being known and in general use as the metal since 3000 BC in several countries which at that time might have been described as mature economies. Zinc was not isolated and recognised as an industrial metal with distinct and valuable properties until about 1700-1800 AD (although it had, of course, been utilised as a constituent of brass for some 2000 years previously). c were well established as industrial metals by the beginning of the 20th century. The present paper briefly reviews the overall growth in world consumption* and changes in the three main areas which today represent the mature economies or industrialised areas, i. e. ,Europe, the United States and Japan. Trends in overall consumption are determined by the demands for the individual uses for lead and zinc. The changes in patterns of use in the industrialised areas - individually and collectively - and reasons for the changes are also considered. LONG TERM TRENDS - 1900-1984 The World Picture Since the beginning of the 20th century the world consumption of lead (3.9 million tonnes in 1984) has grown almost fourfold and that of zinc (4.7 million tonnes in 1984) is almost eleven times greater than it was in 1900. The long-term trend has been one of continuing expansion for both. metals although the pattern has been severely disturbed at certain periods, for example in the years immediately following the two world wars and at times of marked recessions in industrialised areas. Apart from such major setbacks, new levels of consumption have been established regularly every few years. Recently, however, consumption has not really grown and with only a slow and partial recovery in world industrial activity at present, there is no indication that the peak consumptions of 4.2 million tonnes of lead, set in 1979, and 4.8 million tonnes of zinc (1973) will be exceeded in the near future. The growth in world lead and zinc consumption since 1900 is shown in Figure 1 (which includes changes in copper and aluminium for comparison). Overall growth over the period 1900-1984 has been about two percent a year for lead and about three percent for zinc (annual growth for copper has also been about three percent). Increases in tonnage consumption and growth rates by decade for lead and zinc are summarised in Table I. However, the growth rates by decade sometimes conceal very large individual annual increases and decreases. For example, in 1975 lead consumption fell by 13 percent and zinc consumption by 22 percent compared to 1974. In 1976 consumption of lead and zinc rose by 12 percent and 18 percent respectively. The years when consumption 'landmarks' (ie one, two, three and four million tonnes) were first reached are shown on Table 2. Clearly, the pattern of shorter periods being required to attain each extra million tonnes of consumption was broken in the 1970's. The consumption of zinc overtook that of lead for the first time in 1940, and since 1946 has always been at a higher level. Trends in industrialised areas The two key industrialised areas at the beginning of the 20th century were Europe and the United States which between them accounted for some 95 percent of world lead consumption and 98 percent of zinc consumption. Figures 2 and 3 show the growth in lead and zinc consumption, and Figures 4 and 5 the percentage shares for each area since 1900. Europe has usually been the major user of lead except for some years in the 1920fs, most of the 40's and early 50's when consumption in the United States was larger. In 1900, Europe accounted for about 64 percent of world lead consumption and the United States just over 30 percent. Currently, Europe takes about 40 percent of world consumption and the

For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. INTRODUCTION Uranium mill tailings, by-products from the mining and milling of uranium oxide contain all decay products of uranium-238, uranium-235 and all the Th-232. The ore containing all daughter products of the parents U-238, U-235 and Th-232 is ground to approximately 50% under 200 mesh particle size and after extraction of uranium, the residue, described as tailings, is discharged into natural depressions confined by dams. These deposition sites are referred to as tailings ponds. Tailings ponds are located in two mining districts, Bancroft and Elliot Lake in the Province of Ontario, Canada. Some parts of tailings ponds are dry up to a depth of several meters, whereas other parts have a water table very close to the surface and still others are covered with water. The extent to which the daughters of uranium isotopes are in equilibrium with the parents U-238 and U-235 is dependent on the age of the deposit in which uranium occurs and the extent to which the decay products are removed by geochemical processes. In the mining district of Bancroft, the deposit is known to be approximately 1 billion years old, whereas in Elliot Lake, the deposit is considered to be approximately 2 billion years old. The ratio of radiogenic lead isotopes Pb-206 and Pb-207, can provide some estimates concerning the age of the deposits. If the tailings are not affected by geochemical processes, the tailings would contain all the daughters of the 4n+2 and 4n+3 series in equilibrium concentrations. The equilibrium activities of some members of the 4n+2 series are calculated in Table 1. [ ] The amount of radiogenic stable lead isotopes depends on the age of the ore deposits. If the deposit in each district is of the same age, a definite relationship is expected with respect to the activity of Pb-210 and the radiogenic stable isotopes. Approximately 33 million tons of the tailings have been deposited in the early 1960's, approximately 20 years ago. During this period of storage, the segregation of uranium daughters, like radium, the diffusion of gaseous product, Rn-222, and removal of precursors by geochemical processes, can cause dis-equilibrium. Earlier work concerned with the uptake of Ra-226 and Pb-210 by plants (Kalin and Sharma, 1981), indicated that the concentrations of Pb-210,in samples of the tailings taken, were lower than the expected equilibrium. The diffusion of radon from a variety of matrices has been studied (Tanner, 1964). It has been shown that the diffusion coefficient is dependent on the particle size in which its precursor is present, the moisture content and the surface conditions. The direct measurement of radon concentrations in the environment near the ponds is dependent on the metereological conditions. Kramer, Schroeder and Evans, 1964, have examined the variations in the concentration of radon near the ground level with respect to atmospheric variables, such as changes in barometric pressure, precipitation, wind velocities, thermal atmospheric instability. It is difficult to relate the total release of radon from the ponds to the atmosphere over an extended period. Our measurements of Pb-210 and total lead on tailings samples taken from 16 sites indicate that the ratios of the activity of Pb-210 to the mass of total lead can provide parameters which are helpful in the estimation of the total amount of radon and its decay products diffusing from the tailings ponds. In this paper, we present the results of measurements of activities of Ra-226, Pb-210 and total lead in samples from various ponds situated in both mining districts. The measurements were confined to samples taken at 0-25 cm depth from the surface.

"Refuge alternatives (RAs) are required in underground coal mines to support life post-disaster. RAs are mandated by MSHA to maintain an apparent temperature (AT) at or below 95°F (35°C) while providing a safe and livable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours. Because strata composition and mine temperatures will affect the final AT within an occupied RA, NIOSH researchers have collaborated with five underground coal mines across the US to characterize the effects of geographic location and seasonal temperature fluctuations on mine air temperature, relative humidity, and mine strata temperatures. The data collected indicates that some mines will experience greater temperature fluctuations than others, based on geographic location. The mine which demonstrated the greatest temperature differential over the course of the year resulted in a mine air temperature that ranged from 53.4°F (11.9°C) to 84.2°F (29.0°C) and a rib surface temperature that ranged from 55.4°F (13.0°C) to 82.8°F (28.2°C). This data suggests that the location and seasonal peak temperature can significantly affect the mine strata temperature, which could lead to a fully occupied RA exceeding the 95°F (35°C) AT limit over the course of 96 hours. The data reported in this paper could be used to examine the heat buildup inside an RA for actual mine conditions. Thermal simulations could be implemented to evaluate maximum occupancy ratings based on actual mine temperatures and strata compositions. INTRODUCTION In the event of a mine disaster, miners’ primary focus is to escape. Should their attempt be futile, they can enter a refuge alternative (RA) to await rescue. In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated that underground coal mines implement RAs within 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of the working face and spaced within one-hour travel distances in outby areas where persons work such that persons in outby areas are never more than than a 30-minute travel distance from an RA or safe exit. These RAs are required to provide a safe and habitable shelter for a minimum of 96 hours and to prevent the apparent temperature (AT) from exceeding 95°F (35°C) [1]. There is concern throughout the industry that in some cases the internal ambient of occupied RAs may exceed the 95°F (35°C) AT limit due to the potentially hot mine atmosphere as well as the metabolic heat generated by RA occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) and its Experimental Mine (EM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. Further testing and analyses were completed to evaluate the mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiation) by which heat is transferred from an RA to the mine surroundings. Additionally, the effects of varying mine strata compositions on the heat buildup inside an RA were studied [3]. The mine strata temperatures will increase due to heat transfer from within an RA. Depending on the mine strata composition, some mines may be more thermally conductive than others. For example, sandstone is much more conductive than shale or coal (i.e. it disippates heat at a quicker rate). All things being equal, the air temperature inside of an RA after 96 hours will be higher for a mine with strata that has low thermal conductivity compared to a mine with high thermal conductivity."

INTRODUCTION Perhaps no other area reflects the art as well as the science of mining-engineering design quite as obviously as strata control. This is due to the fact that the design of mining structures is difficult because rock rarely behaves as a homogeneous medium. Further, the original state of stress and the mechanical proper- ties of the in situ rock are somewhat difficult to deter- mine. However, those aspects that are hard to treat mathematically can and have been successfully approached by model studies and in situ measurements. This chapter will review the fundamentals of strata- control design and will provide examples of applications to typical problems. STRESSES AROUND MINE OPENINGS A close examination of Fig. 1 reveals that, prior to mining, stresses exerted in the overburden can be in both the horizontal and vertical directions. In the example problems of Chapter 1, it was shown that the maximum compressive stress (uv) at any depth (D) below the surface can be approximated as follows: [ ] Further, the lateral stress (oh) is related to the maxi- mum compressive stress by utilizing Poisson's ratio (µ): [ ] As soon as a heading is driven, such as the one in the coal seam shown in Fig. 2, the stresses shift to the sides, or abutments, of the opening. Clearly, these compressive stresses around the opening exceed the pre-mining conditions. The problem of designing an underground opening, therefore, is to determine the maximum stresses and to note if they exceed the ultimate strength of the rock. Table 1 lists several rocks with their corresponding strengths. Figs. 3 to 5 depict the boundary stress concentrations around circular, ovaloidal, and rectangular openings. M is the ratio of the horizontal stress to the vertical stress, or as defined above, p/(l-p). This text will concentrate on the state of stress represented by M = 0.33, which corresponds to the condition of no lateral deformation in a rock having a Poisson's ratio of 0.25. For an ovaloid with an opening width-to-height ratio of 2.0 (Fig. 4), the boundary stress concentrations are at their maximum values at the comers of the opening, with values in excess of 3.0. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. INTRODUCTION Project Background The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) hired the Seattle office of Parsons Brinckerhoff to lead a team of consultants to produce an Environ-mental Impact Study and perform conceptual and preliminary engineering. The pur-pose of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement project is to replace the existing earthquake damaged and aging viaduct and sea wall, adjacent the downtown waterfront of Elliott Bay, with structures that have improved earthquake resistance and that maintain or improve mobility and accessibility for people and goods along the existing corridor. With an estimated replacement cost over $4 Billion and construction duration exceeding 8 years, it is one of the largest transportation design projects on the West Coast of the United States today. Seattle, Washington is a city of over 2 mil-lion people in the Northwest corner of the United States. Ever since the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, Seattle has been considered a departure point to Alaska. Because of this, the street along the waterfront was named the Alaskan Way in 1930. Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall The Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV) carries State Route 99 along the shoreline of Elliott Bay through downtown Seattle and is a vital part of Seattle’s highway system. The viaduct carries approximately 110,000 vehicles per day or 25% of all north-south traffic through Seattle (Figure 1). It is 3.4 km (2.1 mile) long with 3 lanes in each direction and was constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete between 1952 and 1956. The wear and tear of daily traffic, salty marine air, and several earthquakes have taken their toll on the facility. Studies in the mid-1990s provided early evidence that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life. The viaduct’s increasing age and vulnerability was apparent by crumbling and cracking concrete, exposed rebar, weakening column connections and deteriorating railings. In early 2001, a team of structural design and seismic experts began work to determine whether it was feasible and cost-effective to strengthen the viaduct by retro-fitting it. In the midst of this investigation, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Puget Sound region (the Nisqually Earthquake, located 56 km (35 miles) from Seattle and deep below the surface) caused moderate damage to the reinforced concrete structure. WSDOT closed the viaduct for inspection and repairs intermittently for several days over a period of several months.

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.
