A wide concept of flotation equipment and technologies is presented in this paper. The basis for the presentation in Outokumpu's world-wide experience in mineral processing and other related areas, and continuing research and development work done in Finland as well as abroad by Outokumpu's subsidiaries (and customers). It is understood that flotation equipment selection for a certain process stage is becoming more complicated. It is obvious that flotation equipment in grinding circuit needs different design from a multistage cleaning process. In this paper, column flotation is compared with other flotation methods. There are about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of discarded dolomitic-limestone tailings from the Gays River lead/zinc mining operation in Nova Scotia currently stockpiled in a tailings pond at the mill site. Neutralization effectiveness similar to an agricultural grade limestone and low contents of residual metals make the tailings a potential source of soil conditioner material for the local market. However, the fine particle size, 98% passing 147 pm (about 100 mesh), and a moisture content of 20% make their handling, shipping, and application to soils difficult. The tailings were agglomerated into small hard pellets with various amounts of soil nutrients, moisture content less than 13%, and pH values ranging from 6.5 to 8.7.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant was investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of the experiments were carried out at 75°C, and the results were compared with consideraton given to the equilibrium of the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide-containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia were considered at three different temperatures. It was found that, with the introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (I-), iodine (I2) and triiodide (I3-) is increased substantially, which in turn helps the rate of gold dissolution. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical-controlled mechanism.

INTRODUCTION With the introduction of large diameter hole drilling to underground mining, a need for the development and utilization of new blasting technology has arisen. This new technology has resulted in more efficient blasting and in easier and cheaper mining. The application of spherical charges to the crater blasting method is an im¬portant part of this technology. Spherical charges, or their geometric equivalent, make for highly efficient use of explosives in the cratering application. Their geo¬metrical configuration, normally a length :diameter ra¬tio of <6:1, limits their charge weight size. For exam¬ple in a 165-mm (61/2-in.) hole a spherical charge weighs approximately 34 kg (75 lb). These dimensional and weight restrictions require careful engineering design and control in the production application. Strathcona mine, a large tonnage mechanized cut¬and-fill and blasthole stoping operation located on the north rim of the Sudbury Basin, has successfully em¬ployed the crater blasting method in production blasting for the past two and a half years (as of 1979). As a result, this method, using spherical charges, has made possible the development and implementation of a verti¬cal retreat blasthole mining method which is being used for rib pillar recovery. The crater method used at Strathcona essentially in¬volves blasting off horizontal slices of ore into an under¬cut while retreating vertically to the pillar overcut elevation. Loading and priming of the holes is achieved from the overcut and the blasted muck is recovered by load¬haul-dump (LHD) units through a drawpoint system. Valuable experience on the behavior and performance of explosives in large diameter holes has been gained in both the operating and engineering fields from the appli¬cation of this blasting method. It has been used in drop raising and is currently being evaluated for use in pri¬mary stoping operations. Also, serious consideration is being given to its use for the recovery of post pillars in mined-out and backfilled cut and fill stopes. The method has significant advantages over conven¬tional methods of pillar recovery from economic, ground control, and safety points of view. These include cost benefits due to a minimum stoping development, less ground support, reduced labor requirements, and faster mining rate. Research on the blasting mechanism indi¬cated the method should result in less damage to fill walls than would be normally expected with conven¬tional longhole or large diameter hole cylindrical blast¬ing (benching). This is primarily due to the limited charge weight per delay because of the size dimensions of a spherical as compared with a cylindrical charge and also because the large diameter holes experience less de¬viation than standard-sized longholes. Experience has shown that wall damage has been minimized with the use of this method. The safety aspects of the working environment are also improved as there is no require¬ment for manpower to go under exposed backs after blasting, which is a significant improvement over the cut-and-fill method. CRATERING THEORY General The term cratering, in blasting, is applied to the for¬mation of a surface cavity in a material as the result of detonating an explosive charge in that material. This blasting concept was initially used as a tool in the eval¬uation of explosives performance; however, it has been utilized more recently on surface and to a lesser extent in underground blasting operations. Explosive charges used in crater method are nor¬mally spherical or the geometric equivalent, as research into the application of this breakage mechanism to rock indicates that spherical charges or their equivalent pro¬duce optimum results. In blasting practice, spherical charges have been defined as having a length to diameter (L: D) ratio of 4:1 or less, and up to, but not exceeding a L: D = 6:1. Thus, for holes 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, a charge 165 mm (61/2 in.) diam, and 990 mm (39 in.) in length would constitute a spherical charge. Crater Testing Crater testing for underground application is nor¬mally accomplished by drilling smaller than production sized horizontal holes into drift walls, placing relatively small charges of explosives in the holes at various depths of burial, firing the charges, and measuring the results. The results are scaled to develop charge weight size and depth of burial parameters for production hole sizes. In theory, this procedure is valid and is appli¬cable for surface blasting; however, in underground applications where the craters are inverted, there is some question as to whether extrapolation of the test results is appropriate. As well as the fact that craters are in¬verted with resultant gravity stresses, testing is often done in a waste rock drift where the properties differ from those in ore rock. There is also some question as to whether a 51 or 76-mm (2 or 3-in.) diam charge behaves similarly to a 165-mm (61/2-in.) charge in a confined borehole. Crater testing at Strathcona involved drilling 76-mm (3-in.) diam holes at various depths ranging from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft). The test holes were drilled in the wall of a predominately waste drift as well as in a stope wall. Charges were placed at various depths of burial, were confined, fired, and the results measured. Although the results were somewhat erratic, possibly because of the aforementioned reasons, they did provide guidelines for basic design for production application. The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel (PTST) project is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel (CBBT) complex. The project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel between Portal Island #1 (the southernmost island) and Portal Island #2. The new PTST will be the rst transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper describes the design and construction of the tunnel approach structure in an open marine environment with the strategies employed to overcome the various construction challenges. The project is unique since the entire tunnel approach structure is built on a very limited area within an open marine environment without any reclamation of the existing island.

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted byproducts generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining, (2) dyke construction schedule, (3) size, shape and location of tailing cells and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailing-cell designs, decreasing the mining-cell volume and increasing the number of mining cells improves the net present value (NPV) of the operation due to increased operational flexibility.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in coastal Virginia, USA will add two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) TBM bored tunnels alongside two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands. The site’s unusual constraints and the requirements of a large-diameter variable-density TBM shaped the design-builder’s decisions for handling TBM inputs and outputs, siting the TBM plant and supporting equipment, and sequencing tunnel-construction operations. This paper addresses the logistics necessary to enable key functions of the 46-ft (14-m) TBM and its ancillary equipment, including transport of most materials by barge, U-turn of the TBM on an artificial island, and delivery of materials for the second tunnel through the first one while interior structures are under construction.

In assessing the future markets for a mineral from a producing district, three key aspects must be considered: 1) the future growth in markets, 2) the competitiveness of the district in terms of production costs and reserve adequacy, and 3) the competition from alternative sources of supply. This paper will focus on the first issue by developing a method of predicting the demand for phosphate from the trends in the major markets for phosphate products, primarily the fertilizer and agricultural markets. The paper will show how broad changes in the final end use markets for phosphate products have evolved over time and how this has affected the needs for phosphate rock. These trends are then projected into the future to make an assessment of future phosphate requirements.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. The transport of lithium through a supported liquid membrane was studied with a mixture of D2EHPA and TBP in kerosene as a mobile carrier. In the flat- sheet supported liquid membrane(SLM) system, experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of concentration of mobile carriers in the membrane solution, hydrogen ion in the feed solution, and temperature on the transport of lithium. Experimental results agreed well with a transport model for permeating lithium across the liquid membrane. The permeation rates of lithium can be explained in terms of diffusion of a Li-complex through the membrane phase. For a practical application of an SLM method, a hollow fiber module has been used and lithium can be concentrated more than three times in 24 hours.

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

Copper slag is mainly used in cutting tools, abrasives, asphalt pavement, road construction, and in the production of concrete as an alternative to sand and cement [1]. As a renewable resource, only about 15-20 percent of the slag is used for these applications, and the dumping or disposal of surplus unused slag results in waste of a certain amount of usable metal in the feedstock [2]. In this work, the oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under nonisothermal condition is studied using data obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) method, and the kinetics parameters and reaction mechanism of oxidation are determined. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive recovery of iron resources in slag and the selection of reasonable slag-making conditions.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

Residential and commercial plumbers in the United States were introduced to Viega?s copper press technology in 1999. In short, the technology allows plumbers and installers to join copper pipe securely in four to seven seconds on pipe sizes of 1.2 to 10 cm (0.5 to 4 in.) by pressing the connections with specialized tools and fittings rather than through sodering or welding. The water- and air-tight technology, first introduced in Germany in 1989, includes three different sealing elements, a variety of materials and a selection of configurations. By eliminating the need to thread or solder pipe, connections and repairs can be made quickly and securely. Installations are also much quicker and as secure as traditional methods.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic has always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries and production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Due to these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processes for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored. A few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180° to 200° C or 356° to 392° F) and pressures (2.75 MPa or 400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on activated carbon was studied. In addition to the concentration of ammonia, the parameters that affect adsorption include temperature, degree of agitation and anion and cation concentrations. In the study, it was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions is dependent on the initial silver concentration in the solution. It was also found that the recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions is not as effective us gold. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rapid initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy ,for the adsorption was measured at 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.

Radian Corporation (Radian) has developed a process for treating Cr(V1)-contaminated soils that involves: 1) soil washing using an alkaline extractant, 2) biological reduction of Cr(V1) to Cr(II1) in the soil wash effluent, and 3) separation of Cr(II1) from the biologically treated effluent. Biological treatment has been demonstrated for immobilized cells in fluidized bed bioreactors and suspended cells in slurry bioreactors for Cr(V1) levels ranging from 30 to 600 mg/L which have been reduced to non-detectable levels (< 0.05 mg/L; method detection limit [MDL]) during hydraulic residence times as short as 12 hours. The resulting Cr(II1)-containing effluent stream was chemically treated to precipitate chromium hydroxide for removal by physical separation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating arsenic removal from dilute waters using a biological precipitation/chemical adsorption system. The method includes (1) inoculating water with ferrous salts to increase hydrogen sulfide generation by indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria, (2) utilizing the hydrogen sulfide to precipitate the bulk of the arsenic as arsenic sulfide, and (3) using beads containing ferric oxyhydroxide to remove the remaining arsenic. This approach was applied to a contaminated water containing 13 mg/L As. Arsenic extractions up to 99% were achieved. The use of sulfate-reducing bacteria is particularly warranted in this situation since most of the required nutrients are present in the water. Based on successful initial efforts, planning is underway to conduct a pilot-scale test at the site.
