Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

The Miami mine is located near the town of Miami, Gila County, Arizona. The Miami mine started mining in 1910 and finished in July, 1959. The orebody was divided and mined as follows: Tons High Grade 24,400,000 - Top slicing, sub-level caving, etc. Low Grade 105,100,000 - Block caving Mixed ore 9,800,000 - " Low Grade #2 13,100,000 - " Total Mining 152,400,000 GEOLOGY Ore minerals are largely in pre-Cambrian Pinal schist intruded by tertiary Schultz granite porphyry and covered to some extent by Quarternary Gila conglomerate. The structures are highly faulted and shattered. The Miami fault on the east cuts off the ore and the Pinto fault on the southwest caused re-oxidation of enriched sulphides producing mixed ore. MINERALOGY The chief mineral is chalcocite, with chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, malachite, azurite, chrysocola, cuprite, native copper, and molybdenite as minor minerals. The ore minerals occur in seams, veinlets and disseminated particles. In block caving there is always some dilution, and drawing of ore stops when the grade drops past an economical point. This results in a small amount of copper left in the stopes below the capping. There is some copper in the capping, probably below 0.03% or less than 0.6 lbs. per ton. Over the low grade #2 orebody and portions of the high grade there was an oxide capping which was not mined. The crushed pilars are another source of copper. The leaching at Miami is an attempt to recover this last remaining copper of a worked-out mine. The enrichment at the Miami mine had gone more nearly to completion than most ore bodies in the southwest. There is practically no pyrite in the capping and very little in the ore.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater&apos;s can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. Technology and economies of scale have, in the past decade, brought about the emergence of giant vessels. Meanwhile, to answer the need for rapid dispatch, as a means of combating the proportionately far greater demurrage charges, shiploading and unloading speeds have soared (Ref. 1, 2, 3). As the loading and unloading rates have dramatically increased, so has the cloud of dust grown in unbearable proportions. It not only has threatened to be a real menace to machinery and men, but in certain instances has also seriously jeopardized fish and marine life (Ref. 4). In an era when ecology is king, dust in shiploading and unloading can no longer be shrugged off as a mere public nuisance, and its control is now duly recognized as of grave concern to all. Even if public outcry were not a problem, from the operator&apos;s own parochial point of view, dust can adversely affect productivity and the well-being of the operating personnel. Without adequate control, it can also result in costly equipment maintenance, particularly when the dust is micronic in size, and abrasive. The Hierarchy of Control Techniques Given the great fortune of not yet having to deal with gas and odors, in the jargon of pollution control, our problem is confined to having to control "particulates" only. To deal with "particulates", the myriad of dust control techniques can be utterly confusing to those who are not entirely well versed in the methodology. Our analysis of what is available to date results in the following hierarchy of logical preferences: 1. Prevention 2. Removal 3. Suppression 4. Containment 5. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2009 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on industry exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2009: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2009 and were compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2009, primarily for base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc), diamond and precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver). Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis prior to 2008. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets greater than $100,000, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2009 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies who chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 86 more companies in its 2009 survey than it did in 2008.

The coal reserves in the United States are estimated to be in excess of 300 billion recoverable tons, and current projections of energy requirements indicate our increased dependence upon these reserves. The Department of Energy&apos;s Energy Outlook for 1984 projects that coal consumption in the United States will increase from 737 million tons in 1983 to 958 million tons in 1990, and then to 1,110 million tons in 1995 (Table 1). As shown in this table, the future utilization of coal in the United States is closely tied to the electric utility market, a market that consumes about 85% of the coal produced. Be- cause of this dependence on the utility market, the uncertainties of new environmental regulations, particularly those concerning sulfur emissions, could have a significant adverse impact on future coal demands in the United States. SULFUR IN U.S. COALS Most of the Nation&apos;s coal reserves contain too much sulfur to be fired directly and meet existing emission control standards. In Table 2, the sulfur contents of the coals of the eastern United States are summarized by sulfur levels according to regions. While the coals of some of the eastern regions are predominantly high in sulfur content, it is important to recognize that large tonnages of coal with relatively lower sulfur content are available in these regions. Furthermore, an often significant portion of the sulfur occurs in the form of iron sulfide (Fes2 or pyrite). Because pyrite occurs as discrete particles of high specific gravity, it can often be removed by simple, inexpensive physical coal beneficiation techniques after being liberated by stage crushing. The potential for physical removal of pyrite by conventional specific gravity processes combined with stage crushing is summarized in Table 3 on a regional basis.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes approximately 142 billion kWh/a of energy. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the industry’s annual energy consumption could be reduced by 49%. This constitutes nearly $3.7 billion of potential savings on coal production costs at 5.3¢/kWh of energy. Additionally, with climate change regulation on the horizon, any benefits from energy savings in the near future are compounded by associated reductions in CO2 emissions. Research indicates that operating conditions significantly affect energy efficiency. Modeling and simulation have been shown to be a cheap and reliable means of evaluating the effects of process interactions and operating conditions. The goal of this work was to apply stochastic process simulation to model the energy efficiency of a typical truck-and-shovel mining system and use the model to evaluate production strategies to improve energy efficiency. The research team conducted energy audits of truck-and-shovel overburden removal and used the results to develop regression models describing truck and shovel fuel consumption. The team then built a stochastic simulation model of the truck-and-shovel overburden removal operation and used it to assess a variety of improvement measures by simulation experimentation. Valid fuel consumption models for shovel loading and truck haulage have been formulated, based on the energy audit results. Valid stochastic process models of truck-and-shovel operations have been formulated to study energy efficiency. The following strategies, in decreasing order of impact, provide the most energy savings for truck-and-shovel overburden removal at the mine: (1) shorten haul roads, (2) increase shovel capacity and (3) increase shovel utilization through optimal truck matching. Additional data will be required to adequately describe operator effects on energy efficiency.

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) systemin a blowing face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. This study evaluates the roof bolter machine CAC while operating in an exhausting face ventilation system. This study considers two similar locations to allow comparison with the previous blowing face ventilation (Zheng et al., Min Metal Explor 36(6):1115–1126, (2019)) study: (1) a roof bolter machine bolting the roof at 20 ft (6.1 m) from the face and (2) a roof bolting machine bolting at 4 ft (1.2 m) from the face. The environment introduces 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust to represent the roof boltingmachine operating downstreamof the continuous miner. However, the exhausting face ventilation uses an exhaust curtain with 9000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air. Two roof bolter machine working positions are simulated with the use of dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8%. When the roof bolter machine operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection since the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5%. Additional CAC airflows of 350 cfm(0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm(0.21 m3/s) were evaluated and demonstrated that dust reductions increased to 59.7% (350 cfm) and 72.0% (450 cfm) for the worst location where the roof bolter operators located.

The heterogeneous distributions of nodule sizes, cover-ages and abundances and the variability of their burial und association with sediments and rock outcrops on the seafloor have emerged as crucial parameters in considering the exploitation potential of the manganese nodules in the central part of the Indian Ocean. Nodules with the long axis measuring from 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in.) account for nearly 60% to 70% of those evaluated from photographic and grab-sample data. In addition, 75% of the nodules (by weight) are between 20 and 60 mm (0.8 to 2.4 in.). The distribution of nodules with abundances ranging from 1 to 20 kg/m2 as well as coverages of 1 % to 90% on the seafloor are important considerations in demarcating the potential areas for nodule mining. The mining of areas with higher concentrations of nodules, such as along slopes associated with less sediment, would result in the enhanced recovery of nodules compared to areas with low nodule concentrations, such as in valleys and plains where thick sediment covers occur. The mining head will encounter substrates such as hard rock exposures, either with or without Fe-Mn encrustations, as well as soft sediment layers in the nodule fields. It must be able to collect buried nodules under sediment cover, and it must be able to negotiate uphill and downhill slopes in mining areas. Mapping prior to mining must delineate areas to he avoided and must define locations to be mined. The requirements suggest that the nodule collector must be a dynamic (active) system with sensors to detect areas of potential nodule concentrations, as well as features that are hazardous (or unfavorable) for mining operations.

This report is based on experience developed on the construction of one contract for the Buffalo, New York subway. The Buffalo subway is under construction for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and is called the LRRT-Light Rail Rapid Transit or more commonly the Metro. The Initial Route of the Buffalo subway construction started early in 1979 and is scheduled for completion in May, 1984. The initial system includes 5.2 miles of underground construction, 1.3 miles at grade for a total of 6.5 miles of subway system. A total of fourteen stations, eight underground and six at grade are included on the system. The Initial Route has a planned expansion to 17.3 miles in the future. On January 15, 1979, a Joint Venture of S & M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio, James McHugh Construction Co., Chicago, Illinois, and Kenny Construction Company, Wheeling, Illinois, was awarded contract 100031, the Line Tunnels from Amherst Street to South Campus in northcentral Buffalo between Delaware Park and the State University, (see Fig. 1, Location Plan) This $35,000,000.00 contract was designed by Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Buffalo, N.Y. The Notice to Proceed was issued January 15, 1979 and the scheduled completion date is August 18, 1981. The project consists of two parallel rock tunnels with a minimum excavated diam of 18 ft 0 in. and a final concrete lining of 16 ft 0 in. diam. The tunnels total 14,630 linear ft. In addition to the tunnels, contract C-31 includes four shafts, an underground pump station, three cross passage connections, and other minor work items. Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.&apos;s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). OVERVIEW Like many older metropolitan areas across the U.S., the Greater Cleveland area is served by a combination of separate sanitary sewers and combined sanitary-stormwater sewers. In 1966, a Master Plan was implemented by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (District) to minimize pollutant overflows into adjoining Lake Erie and its tributary rivers and streams, that would occur during wet weather events. One component of the Master Plan was to reduce the load on combined sewers by constructing new conveyances to intercept separate sanitary flows and convey them to upgraded regional waste water treatment plants for priority treatment. As part of a 15-year program to construct 74 km (46 miles) of new interceptors, the West Leg Interceptor (WLI) Project intercepts flows from four decommissioned waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), and conveys those flows to the new Southwest Interceptor (SWI), which conveys the flows to the Southerly Treatment Plant, a tertiary level treatment facility. The WLI Project was built in sections to permit decommissioning of the WWTPs as each segment of the interceptor system was completed and put into service. Flows from the first of the four WWTPs was converted to the WLI in November, 1992; the final connection was achieved in July 1994. The WLI comprises 9.1 km (5.7 miles) of 21 to 29 m (70 to 95 ft) deep mainline interceptor tunnel, four vortex drop structures, approximately 2 km (1.3 miles) of shallow tunneled connector sewer to the mainline, approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of open cut connector sewers, five construction work shafts (not including one work shaft constructed under SWI Contract 6 at the north end of the WLI), and 15 access shafts.

The mechanization of the materials management function must contribute to the overall goal of optimization of profits. A computerized system contributes to the profitability of the company by saving more than it costs to operate. Design and implementation of the sys- tem must respond to the needs of users, the operating environment of the property, and must support the objectives of materials management. Three basic functions interact within the scope of materials management. They are inventory control, purchasing, and warehousing which have the following objectives: 1) Inventory control-to request materials in a timely manner and in quantities that provide the best level of support to users at the lowest cost. 2) Purchasing-to purchase requested materials and services at the required time and at the lowest cost. 3) Warehousing-to efficiently receive, store, and issue materials and to prepare accurate transaction documents for the activities. The development of the mechanized materials management system will require a plan and objective analysis by management and system users of system requirements. Knowledge of in situ stress and natural fracture distribution at depth improves our ability to stimulate and produce low permeability reservoirs. The focus of this study is three closely spaced, 2.5 km deep vertical wells in the Piceance Basin of Colorado. The wells were completed through the tight lenticular and blanket gas sands of the Mesaverde Group. In situ stress directions and magnitudes were determined from hydraulic fracture tests and anelastic strain recovery measurements of oriented core. The distribution, orientation, and characteristics of natural fractures in the subsurface were determined from detailed observations of over 1300 m of core, of which 400 m was oriented. Stress measurements clearly show that horizontal stresses are strongly influenced by lithology. In a sandstone/shale sequence at a depth of about 2.0 km in situ stresses in sandstone formations are anisotropic, with the average ratios of the minimum and maximum horizontal stresses to the overburden stress being 0.82 and 0.96, respectively. In sharp contrast bounding shale formations are lithostatic. This stress contrast between sandstones and bounding shale formations could act as a barrier to hydraulic fracture propagation during stimulation and impede vertical fracture growth. Natural calcite-filled fractures are present in over 7 percent of the core, with several horizons having a much higher frequency of fractures. Fractures are found primarily in sandstone. The fractures have a strong preferred orientation of N 1060E[+]110, which is aligned with the maximum horizontal stress and direction of hydraulic fracture propagation. The interaction between a well developed fracture fabric and anisotropic stresses in sandstone formations produces a permeability anisotropy, with the maximum permeability aligned with the fracture fabric and maximum horizontal stress.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

"The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is implementing the $2.2-billion DC Clean Rivers Project (DCCR) to control combined sewer overflows (CSO) to the Anacostia and Potomac rivers and Rock Creek, and to provide flood relief to the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods in the District of Columbia. The long-term control plan complies with the requirements of a Federal Consent Decree entered into by DC Water, the District of Columbia and the United States, as represented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel, a design-build project, will store combined sewage and deliver it to a system of downstream tunnels and ultimately to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (Blue Plains), where it will be treated. In addition, the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) is a major project associated with the mayor’s task force to alleviate extreme flood events in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel Utility Relocations (NEBTUR) design-bid-build (DBB) project is an accelerated component of the Anacostia River System, as shown in Fig. 1. During dry weather conditions, the entirety of the sewage in the combined system is conveyed to Blue Plains.During storm events, when sewer pipe capacity is exceeded, the flow, which is a mixture of sewage and stormwater runoff, overflows into receiving waters through outfalls. There are a total of 47 active CSO outfalls along district waterways.The influx of storm runoff into the combined sewer has an additional impact on the communities of Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park. The sewer system is outdated and undersized. In these neighborhoods, when the capacity of the sewer is exceeded, localized flooding occurs and backups into adjacent residences are prevalent. In any given year, there is a 50-percent chance that flooding will occur in these neighborhoods."

Flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous miners have been shown to be an effective respirable dust control technology, traditionally used during the extraction of extended cuts of up to 12.2 m (40 ft). To effectively use scrubbers in faces that employ exhaust ventilation, the return ventilation curtain or tubing should be located outby the scrubber discharge on the continuous miner, which results in a setback distance from the face of approximately 12.2 m (40 ft). The goal of this research was to compare respirable dust levels generated in 6.1 m (20 ft) cuts when using extended curtain setbacks with a scrubber operating to dust levels in 6.1 m (20 ft) cuts when using traditional exhaust face ventilation without a scrubber operating. Dust surveys were completed at three mines with area and personal sampling conducted to quantify respirable dust concentrations on a cut-by-cut basis. Sampling results did not show a statistically significant difference in respirable dust at the continuous miner or shuttle car locations with and without the scrubber operating. However, with the scrubber operating, respirable dust concentrations in the return airstream downwind of the miner showed reductions of 91%, 86%, and 40% at Mines A, B, and C, respectively. The reductions at Mines A and B were statistically significant. Likewise, reductions in respirable quartz dust levels in the miner return were observed at all three mines, with statistically significant reductions of over 80% observed at Mines A and B. Consequently, operation of the flooded-bed scrubber did not impact respirable dust levels in the face area but did significantly reduce respirable and quartz dust levels downwind of the continuous miner. These results were obtained with the mines operating at or above the minimum operating levels specified in their ventilation plans.

The sedimentary western phosphate deposits of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming tend to be calcareous and generally carry a significant amount of dolomite along with collophanite. In some cases, such as the Smokey Canyon Mine, Afton, Wyoming, the ore will also contain mudstone, and in this case the aluminosilicate minerals (clay, feldspar, etc.) together with some dolomite are floated from the collophanite in column flotation cells with an amine in order to meet product specifications (31 % P205) (Service et al.). In other cases, such as the SF Phosphates Limited Mine, Vernal, Utah, the ore is treated by traditional fatty acid flotation of the collophanite with mechanical flotation cells (Weber, 1986). Preliminary tests have now been conducted to evaluate air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology for the flotation of western phosphate ore. For this preliminary study, samples were taken from the hydrosizer overflow stream (18-21 % P205) at the SF Phosphates Limited Plant in Vernal, Utah for scavenger flotation testing with the 2-inch ASH system in laboratories at the University of Utah. Selected design and operating variables are being studied, and the initial results show that satisfactory separations can be achieved by high-capacity ASH flotation at appropriate operating conditions. For example, with single-stage ASH flotation 80% recovery can be obtained with a scavenger concentrate grade of about 26% P2O5. These results are comparable to, or better than, those obtained at SF plant operations with conventional flotation cells and suggest that ASH flotation technology can be used to good advantage in the phosphate industry. Of course, research should be continued to consider other process streams, optimize the separation efficiency, and evaluate larger diameter ASH units.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."
