It is proposed that battery grade MnO2 can be produced directly from a manganese ore from Azul Mine in Brazil, by leaching with HCI to remove heavy metals selectively. We are working to find a way of selectively separating Cu, Ni, Co, Pb and Fe from the resulting acidic manganese chloride solution, to detoxify it and produce marketable chloride solution. Chelating ion exchange resins are proving more promising for this separation than solvent extraction with commercially available reagents. Results from batch and column ion exchange tests that characterize the behavior of copper, nickel, cobalt, lead and iron are reported.

The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned at Cyprus Sierrita in July 1995. This grinding roll is the world's biggest operating unit. It has a roll diameter of 2.4 meters and a face width of 1.4 meters. It is driven by two, 2250 KW (3,000 HP) motors. This paper will discuss the development of the grinding roll at Cyprus Sierrita and what it has done for comminution of Sierrita ore. Maintenance and operating performance will be discussed as well as testwork including size reduction, power input, work index, and throughput.

5.1 INTRODUCTION There are several types of surface ground disturbances, each of which is immediately transmitted to surface structures and causes damage of various forms, depending on the location of the structures in the subsidence basin. Many criteria have also been proposed for defining the potential structural damage. All of these topics will be discussed in this chapter. 5.2 TYPES OF GROUND DAMAGES There are two types of ground damage, continuous and dis¬continuous, that could inflict damages to surface structures. Dis¬continuous ground damage is open fractures of various degrees. Four types of fractures are commonly seen (Brauner, 1973b): 1. Fissures or cracks. Cracks are the most common form of ground damage and range from completely closed to several feet wide. Surface cracks are most prominent when the ratio of mining depth to mining height is smaller than 30 to 50 times mining height. Cracks initiate parallel to, but ahead of the moving long¬wall face at some intervals when the depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 25 to 30. As the face continues to move, they open up and then close gradually, and in most cases eventually close up completely when the face moves farther away. Sometimes when the depth-to-mining height ratio is larger, cracks may initiate be¬hind the face and go through the same cycle. Cracks are also more likely to occur in the hill when the face is moving in the uphill direction. Cracks also occur at or near both sides of the panel edges. Those cracks tend to remain open permanently. When the surface is covered with grass or other vegetation, cracks of less than 1 to 2 in. wide usually do not penetrate it and become invisible on the surface. 2. Steps. A step may occur when the longwall face stops abruptly if the mining depth-to-mining height ratio is less than 20. Steps may also occur along the panel edges. Steps also range from a few inches to a few feet in width and depth. If planes of weakness are oriented favorably, ground will slide along these planes and form steps on the surface. 3. Cave-in pits. These result from local collapse of the ground from the mine level to the surface when the mining depth is less than 150 ft and occur mostly above abandoned mined lands. They may be as large as 40 ft wide and deep. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps result from ground compression and occur mostly near panel center some time after mining. Bumps of up to 4 ft, but mostly 1 to 2 ft, have been identified. Continuous ground damage refers to the formation of the sub¬sidence basin where continuous nondestructive ground deforma¬tions occur. As mentioned earlier, continuous ground deforma¬tions associated with a subsidence basin include subsidence, slope, curvature, displacement, horizontal strain, twisting, and shearing. 5.3 TYPES OF SURFACE STRUCTURAL DAMAGES Both continuous and discontinuous ground disturbance cause damage to surface structures. A. Structural Damages Due to Discontinuous Ground Disturbance 1. Fissures or cracks. Open cracks can cause dislocation of surface structure if the gaps are sufficiently large so that the struc¬tural elements cannot resist but fail. On the other hand, minor cracks affect only the appearance, and not the structural integrity. 2. Steps. When a surface structure is located on a step, some portions of the structure lose support and become overhung. In the case of a residential house, there will likely be many open frac¬tures in the overhung portions, followed in severe cases by sepa¬ration of the superstructure at the edge of the step. 3. Cave-in pits. If the caved-in pit is larger than the surface structure, the structure will drop into the pit and become unstable. If the caved-in pit is smaller than the surface structure, the struc¬ture may either become overhung or lose support in some portions. In either case, it is unsafe for use. 4. Bumps (compression ridges). Bumps will disrupt roadways or house floor. If located under supporting members of the struc¬tures, it may cause damages. B. Structural Damage Due to Continuous Ground Disturbances 1. Subsidence. Pure subsidence or uniform subsidence over an area does not cause any structural damage. However, if it becomes a topographical low area, it may be flooded with water and make the surface structures unusable. It must be noted that the flat bottom area at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin does not reach that position suddenly. Rather, as shown in Fig. 3.1, it is subjected to the dynamic surface deformation asso¬ciated with the traveling subsidence basin before it is left behind to be part of the flat-bottom area. Therefore any structure located at the center of the final supercritical subsidence basin must be able to resist the dynamic surface deformation in order not to be dam¬aged. 2. Slope. Ground slope will induce tilting of the structure. Tall structures with small base areas, such as water towers, chimneys, and power transmission towers are most sensitive to ground slope. If the ground slope is such that if after tilting the center of the gravity of the tilted structure falls outside the base area, it will topple, but this seldom occurs. Ground slope will change the designed slope of a buried trans¬portation pipeline, either increasing or decreasing the original slope depending on whether the ground slope coincides with or opposes the original slope. There are maximum allowable final slopes for various types of transporting materials. Ground slope also affects highways and railways. There is a maximum allowable final slope for a railway because tractive effort increases 1/1000 of its weight for every increase of 1/1000 in grade. 3. Curvature. There are positive (convex) and negative (con¬cave) curvatures. When a surface structure is located on a positive curvature, both ends become unsupported, followed by bending upward at the midportion. The top portion is subjected to more severe stretching than the lower one. Determining the best excavation method is a critical step in successful tunnel construction. In rock tunneling, several factors can dictate the excavation method, such as: (1) rock characteristics, (2) tunnel size and length, (3) nearby utilities/infrastructure, and (4) contractor’s preferred means and methods. This paper discusses the various rock tunnel excavation methods utilized on the Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project (DVT), a project constructed as part of the broader Project Clean Lake in Cleveland, Ohio. The differences between each method’s initial and final lining, geology, and cycle sequence will be analyzed and compared.

The Lower Concourse C Extension (LCE) 108-in Storm Sewer consists of a 2,797-foot long, 27 to 55-foot deep, 108-in I.D. storm sewer tunnel. Situated beneath active taxiways and a terminal apron at Hare International Airport (D), the tunnel diverts ows from existing storm sewers located within the footprint of a future satellite concourse. The project was delivered via Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) as part of Chicago Department of Aviation’s (CDA) ongoing O’Hare 21 Capital Program. This paper presents project details, multiple stakeholder coordination, subsurface risks and challenges, TBM performance, and impacts to existing infrastructure.

Three nutrient amendments and a biological seed inoculant were evaluated for use in establishing vegetative cover on waste rock substrates. Randomized blocks were placed on three substrates. Treatments included two types of organic fertilizer, mineral fertilizer, Azospirillum bacterial inoculant, plus controls. The seed mix consisted of native grass species adapted to low nutrient conditions. Canopy cover has been monitored for three growing seasons. Results indicate: 1) two of three substrates support plant growth following amendment with organic fertilizers; 2) organic fertilizers increase cover substantially over mineral fertilizer; and 3) Azospirillum had no effect on canopy cover.

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

The Anderson Dam Tunnel Project is a high-priority, urgent project under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Water District in California. The project will provide a new low-level outlet for the Anderson Reservoir enabling the seismic retrofit of the Anderson Dam as mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This paper describes planning for construction of the tunnel through the dam’s right abutment crossing several faults in challenging and variable soft and hard ground conditions. The construction methods include SEM, hard rock drill and blast techniques, and a mechanized 8-foot (2.5 m) diameter microtunneled lake tap.

The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.

This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

Planning the development of the Quartz Hill molybdenum open pit mine in Southeast Alaska required a number of special considerations. Located in mountainous glaciated terrain, about 3.8 m (150 in.) of annual precipitation (with annual snowfall over 10.2 m (400 :in.) was a primary consideration. Mine planning included muskeg and snow removal, avalanche control, clearing timber, water quality control, dust control, seismicity, mine schedule, work force and reclamation. Quartz Hill is in an environmentally sensitive area which has required extensive environmental baseline data collection, four Environmental Impact statements (EIS) and a large number of permits.

The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

The Grant Town Power Plant is a nominal 80 MW (net) Waste Coal-Fired Electric Generating Plant which is located in northern West Virginia, approximately 15 miles southwest of Morgantown. The Steam Generator consists of two (2) Pyro-Power Circulating Fluidized-Bed Boilers (CFB), each rated at 400 000 lbs/hour @ 1,350 psig. Main Steam. The Turbine Generator is a single GEC Ahlstrom unit rated at 95 MW gross and 80 MW net. The Plant began commercial generation during April, 1993. The facility is owned by American Bituminous Power Partners, L.P. (AmBit), and operated by Mission Operations and Maintenance, Inc.

Continuous improvement through teamwork and innovation is needed in the following areas to thrive amidst worldwide competition: 1) Maximization of the in-place value of ore. 2) Research and development to yield new processes and products. 3) Safe productivity. 4) Involvement in legislative processes. 5) Wellness programs to lower health care costs.

During the refining of primary magnesium metal: a spent flux (sludge) is produced which is considered a dangerous waste by the Washington State Department of Ecology. Four years of research, testing and marketing has identified two beneficial markets for the spent flux: 1) as a fertilizer and soil admendment as a result of the material's high potash and nitrogen content and its high lime equivalence and 2), as a roadway deicing agent to clear roads of ice and snow as a result of both the salt content and the flux containing chemical compounds which exothermically react with water.

An elastic-viscoplastic material model allows for time-dependent rock mass motion in proportion to excess stress above the elastic limit. The model produces rounded stair-step curves of displacement versus time that are similar to those obtained from recent borehole extensometer measurements made in the central portion of the Ross shaft pillar at the Homestake mine. The work in progress, including two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses using the UTAH2/3 codes, indicates that the model is a step towards more realistic safety and stability analysis, but that inclusion of rock mass damage may be desirable.

Sand bed filters are used to remove large and small particles from liquid streams. The large particles are removed by the straining action of the filter bed and the small particles are removed by particle deposition on the surface of the bed particles. Particle deposition, while being essential for the filtering action of colloidal particles, is not the only process that occurs in the filter bed. Other processes that occur are (1) the substrate becomes filled with particles limiting further deposition, and (2) some deposited particles are resuspended. The sum total of all these processes determine the performance of a filter bed.

BART Facilities Standards (BFS) Structural Criteria is a living document that governs planning, design, and construction of all BART projects. Since its development, the document undergoes incremental changes and updates to reflect policy changes, changes in local, State, or national design codes and guidelines, advancements in engineering and technology, or based on the performance of past built infrastructure. In 2020, the BFS-Structural Criteria underwent a comprehensive update and was released with BFS version 3.2. This paper summarizes the updates to the Tunnels and Underground Structures Section of the Structural Criteria, and provides insights to the basis and logic of the requirements.

The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.
