In this research, geological characteristics of sand quarries around the village, Kemerburgaz Akpinar, are studied and the mineralogical, petrographical, chemical and technological characteristics (such as sieve analysis, relative density, water absorbtion etc.) of the sand samples, obtained from the area are explained. In the general area sand' quarries, being in lacustrine formations belonging to Neogen, the stratigraphic location of the sand occurences take place at high levels of these formations, geologically. All of this pattern, being under 1 mm with a ,particle dimension, it ranges from 0,5 mm in the quantity of 99 % to 0,25 mm in the quantity of 15 relative density is 2,65 g/cm3 ; water absorbtion is 0,9%. Mineralogically, the sand samples contain Quartz (84%), Feldspar (3%), Calcite + Aragonite (10%), Pyroxen+Amphibole (1-2%), Garnet+Tourmaline (0.5%), Olivine (0.1-0.5%). Besides, sand samples contain SiO2 with the quantity of above 90%. Containing Quartz at high levels for mineralogical, petrographical and chemical characteristics, Akpinar sand will be evaluated as silica sand when the carbonate mineral is removed with the method of ore preparation such as leaching.

Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

A number of state and federal agencies are calling for development of aquatic life criteria for conductivity. These aquatic life criteria or ?benchmarks? are based on observed correlations between conductivity and benthic macroinvertebrate community composition, generally measured by composite metrics or indices. However, development of an aquatic life criterion for a composite variable like conductivity is made difficult by a number of factors. Based on a database from West Virginia, observed patterns of invertebrate community composition versus conductivity may instead be related to a combination of abiotic (e.g., ionic composition, habitat) and biotic (e.g., life history, colonization potential) factors. Many benthic invertebrate taxa also do not respond to increasing conductivity in a consistent relationship. Many states have determined that a composite variable, like conductivity or TDS, is not appropriate for criteria development, as many studies have shown that toxicity varies as a function of ion composition and can be mitigated by elevated hardness. We conclude that the relationships between conductivity and changes in benthic macroinvertebrate community composition are neither strong nor reliable enough to warrant derivation of a criterion based solely on conductivity.

The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. The Pueblo Viejo gold/silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/tonne gold and 20 g/tonne silver at a rate of 7,250 tonnes/day. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide orebody. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians (for some time in the early sixteenth century) prior to the arrival of the Spanish and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950?s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and accordingly, the plant was designed, built and brought into production.

A combined physical/biochemical process for the precombustion removal of 13 inorganic hazardous air pollutant (HAP) precursors, i.e., Sb, As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cl, Co, F, Pb, Hg, Mn, Ni and Se, from coal was tested. Biochemical processes for removal of HAP precursors from coal potentially offer advantages of deeper cleaning, more specificity and less coal loss. The slurry column is a second-generation process for the beneficiation o f fine (60-mesh x µm coal by a combination of physical separation of mineral matter and biooxidation of pyrite. Sixty-seven percent removal of pyrite from a 60-mesh Pittsburgh #8 coal was achieved at a 35% (w/w) slurry concentration and a five-day reactor residence time. Ninety percent of the heating value of the feed coal was recovered. Among the HAP precursors of most concern, over half of the Se, As and Hg were removed from the feed coal. From 40% to 70% of most HAP precursors were removed from the feed coal. Hg in the feed coal was reduced from 0.12 to 0.054 ,µg/g in the product coal, while waste coal contained 0.24 µg/g.

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To compound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores have fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Particularly in hard, (semi)refractory sulfide ores, many operations may experience substantial decreases of gold recov­ery. For example, Martins et al. (1991) report that at an Austra­lian mine, sulfide ore treatment led to 4 - 10 % lower gold reco­veries as the work index increased from 8 kWh/t to 14 kWh/t and the grind coarsened. Many refractory ores should actually be classified as semirefractory since a fine sulfide fracturing and liberation would make 80 - 90 % of the gold cyanide leachable. However, conventional comminution is often prohibitively expensive for these ore types.

To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos' blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. The use of diesel-powered equipment in underground coal mines has increased substantially during the last ten years in an effort to enhance mine safety and productivity. Pennsylvania and West Virginia are two of a number of states with regulations governing the use of such equipment. These states both developed and promulgated regulations before permitting diesel equipment in their underground coal mines because of concern for miners’ safety and health, especially with regard to the contamination of mine ventilation air with diesel exhaust emissions. The major components of diesel exhaust emissions are combustion gases and diesel particulate matter. The gaseous emissions consist of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons. The diesel particulate matter (DPM) is comprised of solid carbon particles, liquid and solid hydrocarbons, sulfates and moisture. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) also promulgated regulations in an effort to control diesel emissions in underground coal mines. MSHA has adopted threshold limit values (TLVs) for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust, which were established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). MSHA (30 CFR Part 72 Subpart D) has established a tailpipe DPM emissions limit of 2.5 g/hr for diesel engines used in permissible equipment, heavy-duty non-permissible equipment, generators and compressors used in underground coal mines. A tailpipe DPM limit of 5.0 g/hr has been established for light-duty outby diesel-powered equipment. The rationale for the tailpipe emissions limit was that an ambient measurement of DPM in a coal mine was not feasible because there is no established sampling method able to distinguish between coal mine dust and DPM. The stringent tailpipe emissions limit mandates the use of exhaust aftertreatment devices for most diesel engines used in underground coal mines today. One method by which tailpipe DPM can be reduced to MSHA limits involves using an exhaust cooling device in conjunction with a high-temperature, disposable diesel particulate filter.

The results of a study and effective use of flotation for processing of ores with complex mineral composition containing fine-disseminated minerals with high specific density are presented in the paper. The object of research was complex baddeleyite-containing ore from Kovdor deposit (The Kola peninsula, Russia). Baddeleyite is a valuable, rare mineral, natural Zirconium dioxide with 5.8 - 6.0g / cm density, grade content 0.15 - 0.17 and dissemination less than 0.2 mm. The authors carried out a thorough investigation of baddeleyite- containing products selected in different sites of gravity flowsheet. It was determined that due to similar specific weight some sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite) come into concentrate together with baddeleyite and, also, minerals of pyrochlores group (hatchettolite). The results obtained revealed the possibility of use the flotation for retreating rough baddeleyite concentrate. he given gravity concentrate has a number of specific features, e. g. high density of its minerals which, in its turn, provides for high speed of sedimentation of solid phase in pulp, and for the presence of large amount of sulphide minerals (up to 10%) having good flotability. With these features being taken into account a technology for flotation of baddeleyite-containing products after their preliminary gravity concentration has been developed (up to 5 - 10% Zirconium dioxide). The technology has three flotation stages. At the first one the reverse flotation of baddeleyite is carried out during which "light" minerals (forsterite. apatite and carbonites) come into froth product and at the second one flotation of sulphide minerals and at the third one direct flotation of baddeleyite is performed from the underflow product. The following reagents were used for flotation: of phosphate type (sodium tripolyphosphate, mono and diethers of alkylphosphpric acid) and sodium xanthate as collector for sulphides. The given set reagents provides for high effectiveness of flotation due to selective of collectors and presence of froth layer with high carrying ability. New flotation technology of recovering of baddeleyite from complex ore was developed and applied at the Kovdor Mining Plant, using AKER flotation machines.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

Nowadays, the HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) is an intermediate step between filtering and balling in the most modern iron ore pelletizing operation. The operation debottlenecks filtering process and reduces pressure over the typical milling process to control particle size to the balling. The present study evaluated aspects of microwave application to the iron ore concentrate fed to HPGR in a bench scale unit. Iron ore concentrate was irradiated varying the microwave exposure time and grinding efficiency was evaluated. The moisture influence in the HPGR efficiency was also assessed. The pellet feed blaine surface area (BSA) improved by 300 cm2/g and % < 325# fraction by 3%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show the formation of micro-cracks onto the particle surface induced by microwave; the effect observed helped improve the milling process performance, in addition to the moisture reduction observed due to the temperature increase.

The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.

The G2 real-time expert system, a commercial product since 1988, is widely deployed in process, manufacturing and other industries. A number of innovative applications are installed or under development in the mining and metallurgical industries. These include: ? A chemical reagent control system for a mineral concentrator, at a mining company; ? A supervisory control system for a product dryer, at a surface coal mine ? A training system for equipment operators, at a steel mill; ? A scheduling system for furnaces at a hot rolling mill; ? A simulation system for mining operations; ? Several graduate-level research projects in materials handling at a university Realized and projected benefits will be discussed. In addition certain applications installed or under development in other industries will be proposed as applicable in mining and metallurgy. For example, applications for the management of vehicular traffic may find use in mining and shipping.
