Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. To make the curves of general rather than special utility, the residence time (average residence time for back-mix reactors) was normalized to a dimensionless time by dividing by the time required to completely chemically convert the largest particle in the feed to reac-

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. The Caribou sulfide deposit near Bathurst, New Brunswick (Figure 1) is illustrative of one variety of strata-bound sulfide deposits. It consists of numerous near-vertical sulfide lenses which are concordant to the foliation and lithologic layering of low-grade metamorphic host rocks. Pyrite is the chief mineral in these lenses, but appreciable quantities of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena are also present. Rocks in the Caribou mine area belong to the Tetagouche Group of Ordovician age. They consist chiefly of (1) quartz-sericite and quartz- sericite- feldspar schists, (2) greenschists, and (3) slate and phyllite. The trends of these steeply dipping rocks define the trace of a tight, steeply plunging fold structure, the Caribou fold (Figure 2). This fold plunges approximately 750 to the north-northwest; its axial plane strikes N.20°E. and dips steeply westward. Sulfide lenses of the Caribou deposit are associated spatially with the Caribou fold. The deposit is located in the fold along the contact between quartz-sericite and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists on the hanging wall and quartz-chlorite-sericite phyllites and graphitic schist on the footwall (Figure 3). Genesis of the Caribou deposit is ambiguous because its strata-bound form suggests syngenetic sulfide deposition, whereas its location within a fold suggests structurally controlled epigenetic mineralization. Acceptability of a particular genetic model rests on establishing the time of mineralization relative to deposition, deformation, and metamorphism of the associated rocks. To establish the timing for Caribou mineralization, the deformational histories of rock and sulfide, respectively, were compared. Epigenetic and syngenetic models can be tested against this interpreted structural history of the Caribou deposit.

30.1-THE SCOPE OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING JAN M. MUTMANSKY JAN M. MUTMANSKY 30.1.1-DEFINITIONS The terms "systems engineering," "systems analysis," and "operations research," common in today's technical literature, often are interchanged because of their similar meanings. However, some differences exist which need explanation. The most convenient way to achieve an understanding of the differences is to start with the definition of a system, namely, a collection of components which interact in a specific manner to accomplish a common objective. Accordingly, a haulage truck, a computer, a missile, a mining company or a nation each may be considered a system. Systems engineering generally can be defined as the conception, planning, design and engineering of any system of interacting elements so that the objective of the system is automatically optimized. Thus, systems engineering normally is con¬cerned with systems not yet activated.',' Systems analysis may be described as a scientific method of making decisions based on a quantitative or other objective evaluation of all action alternatives. It is very similar to systems engineering but usually is not considered to be restricted to problems of design prior to use. While the previous two disciplines are somewhat vague and can encompass a great variety of engineering functions, operations research can be more specifically defined as the application of mathematical models to the problem of optimizing the objective of any predefined system. Systems analysis and systems engineering are closely aligned sciences but opera¬tions research differs in the following ways. First, it generally is associated specifically¬with optimization and mathematical models while the other two often are not. In addition, it, is used predominantly on well-defined problems which can be ex¬pressed in mathematical terms. However, systems engineering or systems analysis may deal with highly complex social or governmental systems which may be ill¬defined and unsolvable by the classical methods of operations research. Finally, systems analysis and engineering always strive to look at the entire system to avoid the problem of suboptimization often necessary in operations research because of the necessity for a mathematical model. Because of his more extensive system, however, the systems engineer often is less able to find the optimal system. In summary, operations research, systems analysis and systems engineering are very similar in purpose but one, operations research, is more mathematical in nature and forms an important part of the other two activities. Other definitions which may be helpful are provided by Griffiths 3 Wilson,4 Falkic 5 Hall,2 Quade and Boucher, 6 and Flagle et al. 1 30.1.2-METHOD AND TECHNIQUES The systems or operations research approach makes use of scientific problem solving. The basic procedure comprises the following general steps: 1. Definition of the problem. 2. Construction of a model of the system. 3. Testing of the model under known conditions.

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the dosage of sodium hypochlorite as activator on the flotations of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, with a focus on activation-flotation kinetics. Four flotation kinetic models were applied to test data using 1stOpt statistical analysis software to estimate the relationships between the maximum flotation recovery rates for the depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the flotation rate constants and the sodium hypochlorite dosages. Within the range investigated, the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite were obtained at 2.5 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with zinc recovery rate of 93.8 percent and 3 mL/L sodium hypochlorite with copper recovery rate of 94.6 percent, respectively, after four minutes of flotation. A second-order model with rectangular distribution of flotabilities gave the best fit to test data collected at various sodium hypochlorite dosages. For the highest flotation performances of depressed marmatite and depressed chalcopyrite, the respective equations of their flotation models were derived and presented.IntroductionCyanidation tailings are the solid residues generated by gold plants that use cyanide to extract gold (Lv, Ding and Qian, 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013). Because of increasing demand for gold, the Chinese gold industry has developed rapidly, with production amounting to 451.799 tons in 2014, an increase of 5.5 percent from 2013. Chinese gold production has been the highest in the world for eight consecutive years. As a result, more than 2.45 million tons of cyanidation tailings are estimated to be discharged into tailings ponds every year (Li et al., 2010; Lv, Ding and Qian et al., 2015; Wang et al., 2015; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2013; Zhang, Li and Yu, 2012), and approximately 300 million tons of cyanide tailings are stockpiled in China, with the potential to cause serious environmental pollution as well as death to wildlife (Adams and Lloyd, 2008; Donato et al., 2007; Hewitt, Breuer and Jeffery, 2012; Velasquez-Lopez et al., 2011; Stephen et al., 2009; Zagury, Oudjehani and Deschenes, 2004). Concerns over cyanidation tailings are not exclusively environmental but also economic, as tailings occupy considerable land area, and tailings storage facilities increase the production costs of gold enterprises (Donato et al., 2007). Tailings often contain other valuable metals such as zinc, lead and copper. For example, the cyanidation tailings of Gaoyao Hetai Gold Plant in Guangdong Province contain 2.5 percent copper (Cu), 0.31 percent lead (Pb), 0.23 percent zinc (Zn) and 15.36 percent iron (Fe) (Shi, 2008), and the tailings of Tianshui Gold Plant in Gansu Province contain 1.94 percent Cu, 5.96 percent Pb, 0.27 percent Zn and 24.62 percent Fe. Cyanidation tailings have therefore been increasingly viewed as a secondary resource rather than waste."

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 418-km (260-mile) railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1,900 employees. Its shareholders are Mitsubishi Corp. (26.18 percent), Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 percent) and the international mining group Rio Tinto, which is its major shareholder (58.72 percent) and operator, with activities in more than 40 countries throughout the world. The IOC was incorporated in 1949 and by 1954 it had completed the Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) rail line. IOC began mining in Schefferville, Quebec by 1954 and closed those operations down in 1982. In 1962, IOC commissioned the present day Carol Project consisting of mining, concentration and pelletizing facilities in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In 2004, IOC shipped its one-billionth tonne of ore on the QNS&L Railway. In 2005, IOC celebrated 50 years of mining history. The company expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m x 1 m x 1 m or 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects, including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal, an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine that, to date, has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass, resulting in reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analyzed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

"EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

"The control of fugitive dust in high-latitude openpit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomena resulting in complicated flow regimes as well as atmospheric inversion due to the lack of adequate insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (one conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional openpit mine geometries were simulated for different seasonal conditions using a computational-fluid-dynamics package from Software Cradle. The airflow was solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model. The concept of particle tracking was used to predict the flow patterns of dust particles. For various climatic conditions and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size, from PM0.1 to PM10, and concentration were generated at various locations and dispersed by the airflows inside the openpit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit were reported at various time intervals. In the summer season, airborne dust particles were quickly transported outside the openpit domain. In the winter season, however, the development of atmospheric inversion significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the openpit domain. IntroductionThe computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) modeling of openpit mines is challenging. In a recent paper (2015), we presented different constraints and challenges in developing a three-dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. The simulation results of a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model by Shi et al. (2000) showed that both the mechanical and thermal forces are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an openpit mine. Alvarez et al. (2007) used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium-sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al. (2010) introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. (2014) used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual openpit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (1) air-advection (10 m/s, or 33 ft/ sec)-driven mechanical turbulence, (2) surface-heat-flux (240 W/m2, or 76 Btu/ ft2-h)-driven thermal buoyancy and (3) both air-advection- and surfaceheat- flux-driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence- induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (nonbuoyant case)."

"Fine-grained hematite ore can be concentrated by the process of selective flocculation and dispersion, which relies on proper reagent selection and control of water chemistry. While many previous studies have been performed analyzing the effects of different reagents on this process in a laboratory environment, this paper focuses on investigating the water chemistry within the process in a pilot-scale continuous deslime thickener.The pH, sodium concentration, calcium concentration and magnesium concentration were varied to determine their effects on the iron concentrate grade and recovery, and the phosphorus concentrate grade and rejection in the pilotscale selective deslime thickener. The ideal pH for the iron grade and recovery of the process using a starch selective flocculant was found to be 10.5. Phosphorus rejection, however, was increased at lower pH values. Minimization of sodium concentration was shown to improve iron grade, iron recovery and phosphorus rejection. Calcium acted as a nonselective flocculant showing higher iron recovery, lower iron grade and lower phosphorus rejection with increasing concentration. Conclusions could not be drawn from the experiments that varied magnesium concentration.The zeta potential of the solid-liquid interface of particles in each sample taken was also analyzed to show relationships between zeta potential and process performance. In all cases, a maximization of the magnitude of zeta potential correlated with increased iron grade and recovery. This supports the hypothesis that a higher level of dispersion enhances the selective flocculation and separation process.IntroductionThe United States produced 53.2 million metric tons out of the 3,000 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore produced worldwide in 2012 (Tuck, 2013). With this in mind, there has been a large increase in iron ore processing research (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2013; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Halt et al., 2014; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a,b, 2013a,b; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). Of the 53.2 million metric tons produced, roughly 8 million metric tons of hematite (Fe2O3) concentrate were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (Cliffs Natural Resources, 2011). This process is the only economically viable method for concentrating low grade (< 40% Fe) fine grain (< 25µm liberation size) hematite ores. It is scarcely used due to difficulty in controlling the surface chemistry of the ore and high reagent costs (Department of Energy, 2001; Haselhuhn et al., 2013a). The process is highly dependent upon both reagent selection and precise control of the water chemistry during separation. This study shows the dependence of the process performance of a pilot-scale deslime thickener on the water chemistry in the feed slurry."

Respirable dust produced during blasting operations in underground mines exhibits both diffusion and convection properties of the airflow. However, the application of the mathematical model presently used to calculate the change in time in the concentration of blasting pollutants is mostly limited to a single drift and cannot be easily utilized for blasts taking place in stopes. This paper discusses an analytical solution based on considerations that enable us to reliably identify the initial condition. Such an approach may be used for any blasting area regardless of its position, its size, or the ventilation system in use during blasting. In addition, a test procedure using field data is established to determined those parameters not measured directly. As well, equations are derived to find the diffusion coefficient, and the position and size of a dust source from the field data. Mathematical considerations The convection-diffusion problem, for a one-dimensional case, is described by the following partial differential equation (PDE): ct. = Dcxx - Vcx + source - sink(1) where C = the concentration of a pollutant T = time V = the mean air velocity in x-direction D = the diffusion coefficient X = distance away from the pollutant source source = any additional pollutant source specified by an initial value problem sink = decay of a pollutant inside the region specified by the boundary conditions. The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. "The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. Refuge alternatives typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that the PRVs vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: a modified PVC check valve, an off-the-shelf brass/cast iron butterfly check valve, and a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel pre-fabricated RA and has been adapted for use in built-in-place (BIP) RAs located at one mine. PRVs used in tent style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with 30 CFR regulations. BACKGROUND The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (Miner Act) (1) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the Department of Labor to act on the results of such research as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in H2O), or at a pressure as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (2)."

The Boddington gold mine is located near Perth in Western Australia in the Saddleback Greenstone Belt, a fault-bounded sliver of Archaean volcanic and shallow level intrusive rocks, surrounded by granitic and gneissic rocks. The mine began operations in 1987, producing about 7.7 t/a (250,000 oz/year) until mining ceased in 2001. Built on the footprint of the original mine, the Boddington gold mine expansion project involved opencut mining from two large pits. Expected gold production is around 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for the first five years. It will be the largest gold mine in Australia. The mine has proven and probable reserves of more than 622 kt (20 million oz) of gold and has an expected life of more than 24 years. The mine is currently solely owned by Newmont Gold Corp., the world?s second-largest gold mining company, employing around 28,000 people worldwide. The conveyor and belt feeder contract for the Boddington gold mine expansion project was awarded by Aker Kvaerner Clough Murray Roberts (AKCMR) to FLSmidth Conveyor Engineering Inc. in August 2006. The contract involved the design and manufacture of 15 conveyors and 17 belt feeders with belt widths ranging from 450 mm to 2.4 m (18 in. to 96 in.) and conveyor lengths from 16 m to 2,172 m (52 ft to 7,125 ft). The total motor power added up to more than 16,700 kW (22,400 hp). The total length of all belting was almost 11.5 km (7.1 miles), and the total fabricated steel weight was approximately 3.7 kt (4,100 st).

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

Introduction Synthetic soda ash production began to decline in the late 1930s. This was due to high operating costs and waste disposal problems. Since soda ash was used as a major component in manufacturing glass, an alternate method of producing that chemical was necessary. A process to produce soda ash from trona was developed by FMC Wyoming Corp.&apos;s predecessor, as well as an economical way to obtain trona. Existing trona operations are located about 40 km (25 miles) west of Green River, WY. Five operators presently mine trona in this area. FMC&apos;s property has 153 km2 (59 sq miles) leased. Its eight shafts reach 488 m (1600 ft) deep to the uniform trona deposit. The seam ranges in thickness from 2.4 to 3.6 m (8 to 12 ft). History Egyptian tombs, dating from 4000 to 3000 BC, contained mummies preserved by an embalming process using soda ash. For many years, soda ash was produced by burning marine plants, then dissolving the soluble material (sodium carbonate) from the ashes. The name soda ash is derived from this method of production. In 1791, Nicola LeBlanc developed black ash, or salt cake, from salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. This process remained in use until 1863, when Ernest Solvay developed a method for producing soda ash from salt, coke, and limestone with ammonia as a catalyst. This Solvay process was widely used. And, in the 1930s, there were 17 plants in the US alone. High plant operating costs and waste disposal problems, however, necessitated finding an alternative to the Solvay process.

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."

Three water-spray ventilation systems were tested to determine their effectiveness in diluting methane at a room and pillar coal mine face. These systems were: the shrouded nozzle, the spray fan, and the conventional nozzle system that is normally supplied with continuous miners. The testing was carried out in two stages. The air-moving capacities of the nozzles were first evaluated in a duct. The duct tests showed that: (1) the volume of air moved by the nozzle is controlled by the type of nozzle, the space around it, and its location relative to the duct wall; (2) the spray fan nozzles or the shrouded nozzles are both capable of moving air quantities up to 6400 cfm (3.02 m3/s); and (3) when the shroud was removed from around the shrouded nozzle, its bare nozzle moved between 9 and 65 percent more air. In the second stage of testing, a full-scale evaluation of the three systems was conducted. The three spray systems were mounted on a continuous miner which was positioned in an aboveground simulated mine entry. The simulated face tests gave the following results: (1) the standard nozzle system, which is mounted on the front end of the miner, is inadequate for diluting methane; (2) under the best testing conditions (lowest methane emission rate, highest primary ventilation airflow, and closest brattice set back), the slight improvement given by either the shrouded system or the spray fan is the same; and (3) under the worst testing conditions (highest methane emission rate, least primary ventilation airflow, and farthest brattice set back), the spray fan gave superior performance.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region&apos;s dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming&apos;s increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986&apos;s 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel&apos;s recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984&apos;s stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. INTRODUCTION Today, raise drilling (boring) has become the stan¬dard method of raising throughout the Western world. It is estimated that the majority of raise footage com¬pleted in 1977 was accomplished by the raise drilling method. Extensive replacement of the drill and shoot system by mechanized raise drilling has occurred be¬cause users have recognized one or more of the follow¬ing advantages. In a direct cost per meter comparison, mechanized raise drilling is economically more attractive than drilling and shooting. Mechanized raise drilling offers improved personnel safety over the drilling and shooting method. Mechanized raise drilling is a faster and more predictable method for excavation than is drilling and shooting. The raise cost per unit of length becomes less as the raise length increases, offering greater flexibility in the overall design of mines. Mechanized raise drilling provides a substantial reduction in labor requirements. 6) Mechanized raise drilling improves the working environment. 7) Mechanized raise drilling improves the rock in¬tegrity of round, unblasted raises. Increasing acceptance of the raise drilling technique is enhanced by continuing equipment development. Today, a wide range of machines and capabilities is available, machine drive systems have been improved, reliability has been increased, and cutter technology is being improved quite rapidly. Table 1 lists the four major manufacturers of raise drilling machines, cutters, and reamers, together with the approximate number of machines that each company had in operation at the end of 1977. Although Reed and Smith are major suppliers of reamers and cutters, they do not manufacture the drilling machines. Four or five other relatively minor suppliers have built machines, reamers, and cutters for raise drilling, but they did not have a substantial num¬ber of machines in the field at the end of 1977. MACHINES FOR MECHANIZED RAISE DRILLING There are three principal arrangements for making machine-bored raises. They include the use of standard raise drills, reversible raise drills, and blind-hole or box¬hole raise drills. Standard Raise Drills The standard raise drilling machine is set up on one mine level or on the surface, and a pilot hole is drilled from that level or surface to a level below. When the pilot hole has been drilled, the raise then is reamed back from the lower level to the upper level or the surface. This arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 1. Reversible Raise Drills The reversible raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a pilot hole is drilled up¬ward to a higher level. The raise then is reamed back from the upper level to the lower level. This arrange¬ment is illustrated in Fig. 2. The machines used for this type of raise drilling normally are capable of being used as standard raise drills. Blind-Hole or Boxhole Raise Drills The blind-hole or boxhole raise drilling machine is set up on a lower level of the mine, and a full diameter raise is bored to a higher level without the use of a pilot hole. This type of machine is illustrated in Fig. 3. Drill Recommendations If access to upper and lower mine levels is equal, the standard raise drill should be used. The complexity of the equipment and associated handling procedures for boxhole drilling far outweigh any mechanical advantage or reduction in the number of operations, provided that access to an upper level is available. If there is good access to a lower level but only limited access to an upper level, the use of a reversible raise drill should be considered. If there is no access to an upper level, a blind-hole or boxhole raise drill is the only practical mechanized system. MACHINE SELECTION There are six major considerations in selecting a machine for raise drilling. These include operating range, cutter loading, machine structure and main¬tenance, drill string configuration, drive system, and automated controls. Operating Range As shown in Table 2 and Figs. 4 through 6, raise drilling machines are available for a wide range of hole sizes. Standard raise drill ratings range from raises of 0.9 m (3 ft) diam and 120 m (400 ft) length up to raises of 3.5 m (12 ft) diam and 900 m (3000 ft) length. Boxhole raise drilling machines are available for raises ranging from 0.9 m (3 ft) to 2 m (6 ft) diam with lengths up to 90 m (300 ft). Table 2 lists, among other criteria, the torque and thrust of typical machines; torque and thrust are the main criteria for analyzing the capacity of a machine. The raise sizes shown in Table 2 assume a condition of medium hard to hard rock formations and optimum cutter loading. The recommended raise size for a given machine can be exceeded when raising softer rock formations or when the operator is willing to accept a lower level of performance; the performance is related directly to the 1093

Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.
