Choosing a mining method for an underground orebody is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology have given design teams an array of possibilities for methods and equip¬ment. Hecla Mining's discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body challenged the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine to determine the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization. This includes drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of in¬formation as the project progresses through exploration and development. The Gold Hunter deposit is a steeply dipping vein system in the Wallace Formation of Idaho's Coeur d'Alene mining district. Gold Hunter is a misleading name for the ore body. The vein is a silver-rich, lead-zinc deposit with only traces of gold. The Gold Hunter ore body is located about 1.6 km (1 mile) north to northeast of Mullan, ID. The ore body is mined from the Lucky Friday Mine, located 0.4 km (0.25 miles) east of Mullan. Mining began on the vein from an access drift driven from the Lucky Friday Mine's 4900 level. Production from the ore zone is projected to be 771 t/d (850 stpd). The Gold Hunter ore is combined with Lucky Friday ore and milled in the Lucky Friday mill. The combined ore boosted Lucky Friday's 1998 silver production from 62.2 t/a (2 million oz/year) to more than 124.4 t/a (4 million oz/year).

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

Introduction A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water: cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1. The prototype, developed from Phase I, was technically comparable to that of conventional steel cable bolts. However, high cost and limited accessibility hindered its commercial acceptance. The second phase of the project was sponsored by the British Columbia Science Council and Pacific Pultrusions Ltd. of British Columbia to locally develop a glass fiber cable bolt. This phase of the project has resulted in the DAPPAM cable bolt (Pakalnis et al., 1994). DAPPAM Cable bolts are the second most used support method in Canadian underground mines after mechanical rock bolts. It is projected that 870,000 m (2.9 million ft) of cable bolts are installed annually in Canada (Poulin et al, 1994). The objective of the research program was to develop a glass fiber cable bolt with similar pullout strengths to the conventional steel cable bolts (267 kN - 60,000 lbf). More than 200 laboratory pull tests were conducted employing standard cable bolt test procedures, as outlined by the US Bureau of Mines (Goris, 1994), to assess optimum rod and surface composition, geometry, number required, pullout and shear characteristics, among others. This resulted in the DAPPAM cable bolt (Fig. 1). It consists of 10 individual 0.6cm-diam (0.25-in.-diam) rods enveloping a 2.2-cm (0.8-in.) outside diameter, high-density polyvinyl grout tube. The composite used in the construction of the rods is comprised of about 65% glass fiber within a 35% polyester resin matrix (by volume). Through pultrusion (a continuous fabrication technique), the fibers and resin are combined into a composite material. The strength of the overall composite is largely governed by the material properties, the alignment [ ] of the fibers relative to the applied load and the density and interaction of the overall components within the composite. A further modification to the composite was the addition of a sand grit to the surface of the individual rod. This increased the overall bond strength between the rod and the cement-based grout, used to solidify the cable bolt to the rock mass. The grout tube has an inside diameter of 1.9 cm (0.75 in.) and is rated at a pressure of 1.72 MPa (250 psi). During installation, the grout is pumped through the annulus of the grout tube thereby filling the hole from toe to collar. Laboratory and field trials concluded that a minimum drill hole diameter of 4.8 cm (1.08 in.) be used to ensure optimum grout coverage. Table 1 compares the design strengths (as tested) for DAPPAM vs. the ultimate strengths for a conventional 1.6cm (0.6-in.) steel cable bolt. The characteristics for the steel cable have been derived directly or indirectly by Goris et al. (1994). A design tensile strength of 289 kN (65,000 lbf) was proposed for the composite developed. However, recent tests have indicated maximum breaking strengths of more than 400 kN (90,000 lbf) (Fig. 2). Figure 2 shows the load vs. displacement pull out curves for steel and DAPPAM cable bolts. The methods of testing were standardized so as to be able to compare the results directly. The shear strength of the fiberglass cable is largely a function of the surface area sheared. Shear strengths of 89 kN (20,045 lbf) were obtained for the configuration shown in Fig. 1 when sheared normal to the axis of the cable. The testing procedure was similar to the shear tests performed on steel by Goris (1993). It is important to reinforce the implication that critical bond strength has on the success of an overall support system.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. The resurgence of severe lung disease among U.S. coal miners has not only highlighted the need for improved dust controls, but also the need for an improved understanding of dust characteristics and monitoring strategies [1]. Following up on prior work by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to demonstrate a novel wet dust collection system on a roof bolter [2], the current study explores the effect of that system on dust characteristics and uses interlaboratory comparisons to comment on analytical methods. Results indicate the wet system did not appreciably affect the composition or size of respirable dust in the vicinity of the operating roof bolter. However, the system does appear to have substantial benefits for the operator. NIOSH has already shown it can reduce the respirable dust mass concentration to which the operator is exposed during dustbox cleanout [2,3], which is a frequent maintenance activity that can re-aerosolize dust, and new results here indicate the silica and silicates content in this dust may also be reduced, thereby reducing the overall hazard. Moreover, regarding analytical methods, excellent correlation was demonstrated between measurements of quartz mass, taken first by NIOSH and then by a university laboratory, using direct-on-filter Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. This method is the basis for envisioned “end of shift” silica monitoring (quartz is the predominant form of crystalline silica in coal mines) [4]. For particle-level analysis by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), there was more variability in results generated by two independent university laboratories.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines investigated solvent extraction methods for recovering gallium from filtrates produced from sulfuric acid leaching of hydrometallurgical zinc residues. These filtrates typically had pH values of 0 to 0.5, too high an acid content for effective gallium recovery by traditional extractants. Of the nine extractants studied in batch tests, 0.3M octyl phenyl acid phosphate (OPAP) in a kerosene diluent was the most effective extractant for gallium recovery, extracting up to 99.9 pct of the gallium. This high extraction was possible when the iron in solution was maintained in the reduced ferrous state. Batch tests also showed that a 1.5M-H2SO4 strip liquor recovered 98 pct of the gallium from the loaded OPAP. A continuous solvent extraction system was designed and operated based on McCabe-Thiele analyses of equilibrium loading and stripping isotherms. When 12 L of leach filtrate containing 0.32 giL Ga and 20 giL Fe were pumped through the system in 32 hr, results showed that 95 pct of the gallium was extracted in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:1. Stripping the loaded solvent with a 1.5M-H2S04 liquor recovered 94 pct of the gallium in four stages at an A:O ratio of 1:4. A two-stage, 50-pct-phosphoric acid strip successfully removed ferric iron from the OPAP, allowing high gallium extractions to be maintained.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. The Cananea porphyry copper-deposit is the site of the second largest mining operation in Mexico. Mineralization is related to quartz-monzonite Laramide stocks that intrude volcanic and volcaniclastic Mesozoic rocks. The ore deposit is a stockwork and breccia-pipes system with Cu-Mo sulfides and pervasive quartz-sericite hydrothermal alteration. A study was made of the arsenic distribution in the mine and the ore-dressing plants. The arsenic (As) in the mine is related to a feldspathic quartz-porphyry type rock associated mainly with the breccia pipe structures (100-700 ppm As in the Veta 7 Breccia). There is vertical zoning, with As decreasing in the deepest part of the breccias. This As mineralization corresponds to a later sulfide hydrothermal stage. The concentrates are made of Cu, Fe and Mo sulfides and some minor quantities of As minerals. The most important copper minerals are chalcocite-covellite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Some of these minerals have 390-880 ppm As. The main As mineral is enargite[ [Cu2.97Fe0.06(As0.90 Sb0.01Pb0 01 )0.92 S4 051 and there are traces of stibioluzonite-luzonite I Cu, .95(Aso.4vSbu.49)0.9rfS4.07-Cu2 93(Aso.H4Sba.10)0.94S4.13] and of another stibioluzonite mineral type with substitution of As by Bi[Cu,96(Ascr,,'Sb0ccrB'OJ3jI~6S] These minerals contribute 80% of the As in the concentrates.

In 1988, the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center identified three coal cleaning options for achieving flexible environmental control strategies aimed at reducing energy-related SO2 emissions. These are selective agglomeration, advanced froth flotation and advanced cycloning. Each relies on maximum liberation of pyrite and other mineral matter through feed coal comminution to fine and ultrafine sizes. The National Energy Strategy (NES) and the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAA) of 1990 are examples of the nation's commitment to a clean environment. The need to use the nation's energy resources in an environmentally sound manner presents critical challenges and opportunities for coal preparation during the next decade, particularly regarding the control of SO2 emissions. The principal challenge is the development of cost-effective coal preparation approaches for sulfur removal beyond currently achievable levels. Opportunities are provided in the form of incentives associated with a novel system of SO, allowances and a policy environment based on the proper functioning of familiar market forces. An allowance, as defined in Section 402(3) of the Amendments, is "an authorization ... to emit ... one ton of sulfur dioxide." To achieve the objective of the Clean Air Act Amendments, SO, emissions will be eventually capped at 8.12 Mt (8.95 million st) annually by controlling the number of allowances issued nationally. By permitting allowances to be bought and sold once issued, the law encourages "overcompliance" as a source of profit for owners of excess allowances. Many details concerning the administration of allowance trading are not yet written.

Each year, about 45 Mt (50 million st) of flotation tailings are discarded in Florida phosphate operations. These tailings only contain about 4% of the phosphate in the ore. However, more than half of the phosphate in the tailings is concentrated in the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size fraction at grades of up to 20% P205. Many phosphate producers have attempted to solve this problem by floating the +425 µm (+35 mesh) flotation feed separately. However, phosphate recoveries in these circuits are typically only 60%. For seven sampled phosphate operations, the phosphate content of the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings ranged from 15% to 25% P205. In every case, the +600 µm (+28 mesh) fatty acid tailings was higher in grade than the overall flotation feed. Attempts to efficiently recover this coarse phosphate have apparently been unsuccessful at these seven phosphate operations. Recovery of this coarse phosphate would provide an additional 900 kt to 2.5 Mt (I to 2.7 million st) of phosphate annually and add an additional year to the reserves of these important deposits. A typical central Florida phosphate matrix is composed of three different mixtures of minerals. The +1.18 mm (+ 16 mesh) portion is chiefly phosphate pebbles and is beneficiated by sizing. The -106 µm (-150 mesh) portion contains virtually all of the clay minerals and is discarded in the hydrocyclone overflow. The -l mm +106 µm (-16 +150 mesh) material is a mixture of quartz and phosphate minerals.

The Coal supply and demand review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. In 1991, the US coal industry produced 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal, according to preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table 1). This amount was 32 Mt (35 million st) less than the record 933.5 Mt (1 billion st) produced in 1990. Most of the decrease in coal production occurred east of the Mississippi River. The substantial stock buildup that stimulated production in 1990 was not repeated in 1991. In addition, coal consumption by electric utilities and coke plants dropped by about 1.8 Mt and 4.5 Mt (2 million and 5 million st), respectively. Moreover, a higher level of coal exports failed to bolster the 1991 production. Production Surface mines accounted for about 59% of the 902 Mt (994 million st) of coal produced in 1991. Underground mines produced for 41%. More than one-fourth of the total coal output was from federal and Indian coal leases. Production of all ranks of coal, except subbituminous, declined in 1991. Bituminous coal is produced mainly in the East. It totaled an estimated 590 Mt (651 million st), a 6% decrease. Production of subbituminous coal, mostly in the West, rose 3% to a record 228 Mt (252 million st). Lignite output was from Texas and North Dakota. It decreased by 1 % to 79 Mt (87 million st). Anthracite production, all from eastern Pennsylvania, fell by 17% to 2.7 Mt (3 million st).

Seismic methods provide an efficient and comprehensive approach to overburden studies pertinent to mining exploration and development, and to other mining and civil engineering problems such as rock mechanics, slope stability, and foundation engineering. For the purpose of defining geologic units and structural features, these methods are generally regarded as the most accurate, but most expensive, of the commonly-used geophysical exploration methods. Although the accuracy and cost of seismic work are generally affected adversely by rugged topography and complicated geologic conditions, it is in rough terrain and complex geology that seismic methods offer important advantages in overburden investigations. For example, to find the surface of rock underlying unconsolidated overburden at depths of approximately 200 feet, a 50-foot spacing of drill holes along the profile line would be required to yield a degree of resolution and accuracy similar to that obtained from a 50-foot spacing between seismic detectors along the same line. See Figure 1. In cases similar to that shown in Figure 1, a twelve-channel recording seismic system would be used. The main components of such a system would be: 1. detectors (commonly referred to as geophones) which convert the ground movement resulting from seismic waves into an electrical signal. 2. a multi-conductor cable which connects the seismic detectors to the amplifiers. 3. ampliiiers, amplify and filter the electrical signals . 4. oscillograph, records the amplified signal. 5. the blaster and firing line. A typical layout of the seismic spread and the components of the system Is shown in Figure 2.

Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

Today’s industrial technology offers to optimize and reutilize the resources available in terms of scum that remains after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. Vast reserves of low-grade coal exist and tons of mill scale are produced everyday after hot rolling in steel rerolling mills in Rajasthan, India. The present research work aimed to optimize the various parameters of solid-state reduction of mill scale using low-grade coal from Rajasthan, India. This study investigates the effect of reduction temperature (850–950 °C in steps of 50 °C), reduction time (60 to 180 min, in step of 60 min), mill scale size (800– 300 μm), and mill scale to coal ratio (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) on achievable metallic iron percentage and its metallization. A higher percentage of iron content is obtained at a lower particle size of 300 μm. The structural analysis is carried out on 300 μm mill scales using XRD analysis, which shows the percentage of iron is approximately 63%, and metallization above 80% can be obtained under the reduction temperature at 900 °C for 180 min, for 1:3 ratio (mill scale to coal ratio). The chemical composition of the mill scale is obtained using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and particle sizes as well as distribution of mill scale are determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The elements present in the mill scale are also verified using EDS, which indicates the presence of a major portion of Fe, followed by Fe2O3, Si, and C, respectively.

Minerações Brasileiras Reunidas S.A. - MBR is a brazilian iron ore mining company geared for the export market. It is controlled by Companhia Auxiliar de Empresas de Minerações - CAEMI through its subsidiary Empreendimentos Brasi leiros de Minerações - EBM which holds 51% in MBR and is formed by CAEMI, the six major japanese steelmills and five japanese trading companies, Universe Tankships, Inc., and Indústria e Comércio de Minérios S.A. - ICOMI. The remaining 49% of MBR's capital are held by St. John del Rey Mining Company, a subsidiary of The Hanna Mining Company. MBR iron ore reserves exceed 1.5 billion tons of high grade ore distributed in 36 deposits located in the so-called IRON QUADRANGLE in the State of Minas Gerais. The Aguas Claras Mine is the largest presently known and highest grade deposit owned by MBR. Other mines such as Pico, Mutuca and Jangada are in operation at a combined rate of production of about 2 to 2. 5 million tons per year. The project consists of mine, railroad and marine terminal (slide). The Aguas Claras deposit, which is located about six kilometers southeast of Belo Horizonte the Capital of Minas Gerais, was selected for initial development. The Sistema Regional Centro of the Rede Ferroviária Federal, through its 6th Division known as the "Central " is responsible for the transportation of MBR ore, and provided the necessary railway construction to connect Mine and Terminal. The Waneta Expansion Project (WAX) is located near the existing Waneta Dam site at the confluence of the Pend d?Oreille and Columbia rivers, approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Trail, BC, Canada. The WAX owners consist of a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corp. This design-build project was awarded to SNC-Lavalin in late 2010 and is expected to be operational in mid-2015. The WAX consists of a new 335-MW powerhouse, including two new Francis turbine units, each generating approximately 167 MW. The powerhouse is located downstream of the existing Waneta Dam, and will make use of excess water that would otherwise be spilled during the runoff season. Water will be funneled to the turbines through an intake structure and two 10.5- m (34.5-ft) diameter, concrete-lined Penstock Tunnels. A 10-km (6.2-mile) transmission line will connect the powerhouse to existing electrical grids. Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunnelers (RFK) was subcontracted by the heavy civil contractor, the Aecon/SNC Lavalin (ASL) joint venture, to excavate the two penstock tunnels and install the cast-in-place concrete liner. RFK is a joint venture partnership between J.S. Redpath Ltd., an underground mine contractor located in North Bay, Ontario, and Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, a heavy civil tunneling contractor based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Since penstock tunnel excavation was planned using drill-and-blast methods with a significant grade of more than 17 percent, the combined experience of these two contractors was a perfect match.

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

"The Regional Connector Transit Corridor is a 1.9 mile long light rail transit project in downtown Los Angeles, California. The project includes approximately 4,930 feet of twin bored tunnels together with a mined crossover cavern, 3 deep stations, and other cut-and-cover structures. The bored tunnels will be excavated using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine through Fernando Formation (extremely weak to weak rock) and alluvium. The tunneling will be performed in close proximity to a large number of existing structures, including the existing Metro Red Line tunnels with as little as 6 feet of separation. Thus, the evaluations of the tunneling effect on these structures and the instrumentation and monitoring program is an essential part of the project design. This paper provides a very brief overview of the considerations and evaluations of the tunneling effects on the existing structures and results of evaluation obtained during the final design stage of the project. INTRODUCTION The proposed Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) project provides a 1.9 mile-long connection between the Metro Gold Line from Pasadena and East Los Angeles; and the Metro Blue Line to Long Beach and the Expo Line to Culver City. The alignment is shown in Figure 1. The Regional Connector will provide new tracks through downtown Los Angeles. The project will extend underground from the Metro Blue, Expo, Red, and Purple Lines’ 7th Street/Metro Center Station following Flower Street, curving northeast to the north of 3rd Street under the 2nd Street Tunnel. The alignment will then continue eastward under 2nd Street, turning northeast to cross under the intersection of 1st and Alameda Streets, then splitting into two branches above the ground surface, one branch extending north along Alameda Street and the other extending east along 1st Street. The project elements include 3 deep stations, a SEM cavern, segments of TBM bored tunnels, and cut-and-cover guideway structures. The bored tunnels have an excavated diameter of 20.3 feet. The subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment generally consist of artificial fill overlaying finer-grained alluvium (dominantly medium dense to dense sandy soils), underlain by coarser-grained alluvium (a wide variety of medium dense to dense sandy and gravely soils). Below the coarser-grained alluvium is Fernando Formation, which is characterized as extremely weak to very weak sedimentary bedrock. A long stretch of the alignment will be excavated in this formation. The soil layers above the Fernando Formation are of variable thickness and spatial distribution. The geologic profile is shown in Figure 2."

"BACKGROUND The design, development, fabrication, and test of a cryogenic supply for a refuge alternative is part of a larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the Kennedy Space Center, FL to create cryogenically based life support equipment responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2008. This work is done by a joint contractor/NASA team. In particular, the Cryogenic Refuge Alternative Supply System (CryoRASS) serves to provide a respirable air source to miners confined for 96 hours in a mine refuge alternative. This system stores liquid air in a zero-loss cryogenic reservoir (Dewar) until an emergency requires use. The system does not require electric power when in use by miners. Because of the very cold nature of the liquid air, considerable heat stress relief and reduction of humidity is provided in addition to the required replenishment of oxygen. Moderate dilution of CO2 also occurs.INTRODUCTION The design of this new cryogenic refuge alternative supply system (CryoRASS) uses NASA/Kennedy Space Center technology as a development baseline. The design stores cryogenic (liquid) air that is warmed in an air handler box and the resulting gaseous air is introduced to the chamber that not only causes air circulation, but relies upon environmental and human heat to expand the liquid air to a gaseous state. Therefore, the primary benefits of the liquid air source, besides atmosphere maintenance (oxygen), is refuge cooling and dehumidification. This results in reduction of human heat stress and this occurs without the need for electrical power in the refuge chamber. This reduction is a major factor in ""apparent heat"" and the human perception of comfort. Another benefit with introduction of ""air"" vs only ""oxygen"" is the dilution of carbon dioxide. The volume of new air will displace existing refuge air and this air laden with humidity/CO2/low O2 passes out of the refuge relief valves. These RVs should be strategically placed to vent stagnant air preferentially. An initial system test was conducted in our Florida facility in a production 10-person hard chamber for 96 hours. Last year (2014) the system was tested with a 23 person inflatable refuge alternative in Bruceton. For this test, the CryoRASS air handler was redesigned to offer superior characteristics when installed in a Built-in-Place refuge alternative. This report describes the results of the modified system being tested in the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine while attached to a 30 person refuge for 96 (+/-) hours."
