Voluminous deposits of commercial-grade phosphate occur in sedimentary strata in a 350,000 km2 (135,000 mi2) area of the middle Rocky Mountains of North America known as the Western Phosphate Field. The Permian marine strata that host the phosphate were deposited on the western margin of the North American craton and subsequently deformed, first by folding and thrust faulting of the Laramide orogeny, and then by Cenozoic Basin and Range block faulting. Carbonate fluorapatite is the primary phosphorus-bearing mineral. Organic matter is abundant in some strata, and both biogenic and non-biogenic pyrite are also present. Certain strata are enriched in several trace elements, especially in arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), uranium (U), and zinc (Zn). Phosphate has been mined from the Western Phosphate Field for nearly 100 years. Phosphate mining and processing constitutes the largest mineral industry of Idaho, producing more than $600 million in processed mineral value in 1997. Resource management agencies, phosphate producers, and others are concerned about the release of Se from phosphate mine wastes, especially at Maybe Canyon, and the potential effects that Se and other trace elements may have on the environment and on human health. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Resources Team scientists initiated a multidisciplinary study of the Permian Phosphoria Formation and related rocks in the south- eastern Idaho sector of the Western Phosphate Field in response to a request by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Studies to date reveal that Se is present in several phases, including native Se, and in an as yet unidentified form, possibly an organo-Se compound. Selenium is also present in pyrite and sphalerite. Selenium concentrations range from 1.2 to greater than 1,000 parts per million (ppm) in samples collected from exposures of the Meade Peak Phosphatic Shale Member of the Phosphoria Formation (Meade Peake) at Enoch Valley. The results suggest that Se concentrations vary spatially across strata and with depth, perhaps comparable to spatial variations of phosphate and organic carbon concentrations throughout the Western Phosphate Field demonstrated in previous studies. Some Se-enriched strata may be of adequate dimension to allow selective extraction during mining. Such units could be handled separately from the main ore process or waste streams and isolated in order to reduce the potential for release of Se to the environment

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. A coal-fired fluidized bed steam generator rated at 12.6 kg/s has demonstrated the industrial and institutional application of fluidized bed combustion by burning high sulfur coal in an environmentally acceptable manner within a populated area. Designed to provide steam for heating and cooling, the unit was placed into service at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and has already logged 5275 hours.* The unit has consistently operated well within Washington's strict regulations governing emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulates. The Georgetown program, cofunded by the university and the US Department of Energy, has shown that fluidized bed combustion is a promising way to realize the full potential of coal, the nation's most abundant energy resource. In a fluidized bed steam generator, a layer of granular limestone is placed on top of a grid designed to prevent particles from falling through. Air is passed upward through the bed with sufficient force to lift and float the particles. At this point the bed material resembles a boiling liquid. Crushed coal is then introduced into the bed and ignited. When high sulfur coal is burned, limestone absorbs the SO2 produced. The operating temperature of a fluidized bed steam generator is relatively low (approximately 871°C). As a result, NO, formation is minimal. Another potential problem encountered in burning coal is fly ash, a form of particulate. A feature of the fluidized bed design, developed by Foster Wheeler Energy Corp., is a fly ash reinjection system. Fly ash is reintroduced into the bed where it is burned again, thereby enhancing fuel efficiency. Nearly all remaining fly ash is captured by a baghouse dust collector. At Georgetown, the fluidized bed steam generator and all auxiliary equipment are enclosed in a structure aesthetically compatible with the surrounding university complex. The steam generator has two separate beds that can be fired independently, and operation to date has been with one and two beds in service, based on steam load demand. During several operating periods, when the fluidized bed unit was the only boiler in service, it supplied all the steam required by the 18.5 hm2 of buildings on campus. Initially fired with low sulfur coal, the unit was quickly switched over to higher sulfur fuel which will be used most of the time.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION In the Polish coal mining industry, the Upper Silesian coal basin has an important position. It contributes over 98% of the total coal production of Poland which reached 193 mt in the year 1979. In view of the significant urbanized area in this region as well as the industrial potential, it is important to protect the surface by stowing the mined out underground workings. Approximately 18% of the total production is mined from longwall faces with stowing. However, caved longwall faces are most popular. In the upper Silesian coalfield, approximately 337 highly mechanized longwall faces are in operation. Out of these 337 faces, 301 longwall faces are caved. One of the main requirements for effective and safe coal extraction is a suitable method for strata control. We can divide the complex process of strata control into four steps: 1. Strata investigations 2. Selection of supports for roadways 3. Selection of supports for longwall 4. Rock bursts and other hazards protection STRATA INVESTIGATIONS Estimation of the structure and physico-mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the workings is an important constituent of strata control. These factors definitely influence the rock stability, support load, working conditions as well as the mining technology. Complex methods of strata investigations involve a set of indicators enabling the estimation of the stability of the roof rock, strength of the coal seam and load bearing capacity of the floor. The basis for the evaluation of roof stability for a coal seam is the classification according to the resistance to bed separation (1). The bed separation resistance is equal to the strength of the rock in tension perpendicular to the bedding plane. In order to properly classify a rock, it is indispensable to make continuous profiles of the bed separation resistance from the immediate roof up to a distance of three times the thickness of the coal seam. The profiles are developed by utilizing mine roof investigations with the hydraulic borehole penetrometer. (Fig. 1) The penetration resistance is determined by the critical pressure required to cause crushing of the rock by the penetrometer indentor (2). The classification of roof rocks and their ability to cave spontaneously during longwall mining is shown in [Fig. 2]. The measurement of the critical pressure also allows for the determination of the compressive strength of the rock, the index of workability and roof fissuration.

The 500-kt/a (550,000-stpy) refinery in Burnside, LA, owned by Almatis Inc. produced specialty alumina used in the abrasives, ceramics, chemical and refractory industries. The 1.2-Mt/a (1.32 million-stpy) refinery in Gramercy, LA, owned by Noranda Alumina LLC produced alumina mostly for use in aluminum smelters but also produced specialty alumina. An upgrade project at the Gramercy refinery to convert 200 kt/a (220,000 stpy) of capacity to produce more profitable specialty alumina was completed in the first half of 2018, and another project to increase capacity was started but a completion schedule was not available. The amount of new capacity was not disclosed, but it would be used to produce nonmetallurgical grade alumina. The 2.3-Mt/a (2.5 million-stpy) refinery in Point Comfort, TX, which was temporarily shut down in March 2016, remained closed throughout the year."

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

Underground mining method selection (UMMS) is one of the most important issues in mining engineering. Underground mining method should be primarily selected to make use of underground resources optimally. It is nearly impossible to change the mining method once selected by the reasons of rising costs and mining losses. Because of these reasons, UMMS process is extremely important in mine designs and economics. The strategy of underground mining method selection has been studied by different researchers in the literature. Boshkov and Wright (1973) proposed a classification system; Morrison (1976) suggested a selection chart; Laubscher (1981) proposed a selection methodology; Nicholas (1981) presented a classification system; Hartman (1987) developed a selection chart and Miller-Tait et al. (1995) modified the Nicholas? system and developed the UBC mining method selection process. In reality, UMMS is one of the important Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) problems and mining engineers have always some difficulties in making the right decision in the multiple criteria environment. To make a right decision on UMMS, all known criteria related to the mining method selection should be analyzed and the problem solved according to suitable decision making techniques. A review of the literature reveals that decision making techniques have been used for UMMS applications. Kesimal and Bascetin (2002), Bitarafan and Ataei (2004), Bascetin et al. (2006), Alpay and Yavuz (2007), Karadogan et al. (2008) and Samimi Namin et al. (2008) used decision making techniques in UMMS applications. In this paper, two different MADM methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Multiple Attribute Decision Making (FMADM) are applied to select the optimal underground mining method for a chromite mine and final solutions are then compared. THE AHP METHODOLOGY The AHP method developed by Saaty gives an opportunity to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex unstructured situations (Triantaphyllou, 2000). The method is based on the pair-wise comparison of components with respect to attributes and alternatives. A pair-wise comparison matrix n×n is constructed, where n is the number of elements to be compared. The method is applied for the hierarchy problem structuring. The problem is divided in to three levels: problem statement, object identification to solve the problem and selection of evaluation criteria for each object. After the hierarchy structuring, the pair-wise comparison matrix is constructed for each level where a nominal discrete scale from 1 to 9 is used for the evaluation as shown in Table 1 (Saaty, 1980; Saaty, 2000). The next step is to find the relative priorities of criteria or alternatives implied by this comparison. The relative priorities are worked out using the theory of eigenvector. For example, if the pair comparison matrix is A, then, [Amax=××- [1] ] To calculate the eigenvalue ??max? and eigenvector w=(w1, w2,..., wn), weights can be estimated as relative priorities of criteria or alternatives. [ ] Since the comparison is based on the subjective evaluation, a consistency ratio is required to ensure the selection accuracy. The Consistency Index (CI) of the comparison matrix is computed as follows: [CImax--= [2] ] where ?max is maximal or principal eigenvalue, and n is the matrix size. The consistency Ratio (CR) is calculated as: [CR= [3 ] where ?RI? Random Consistency Index. Random consistency indices are given in Table 2. [ ] Table 2. "At the Kemi Mine, a recent expansion into the Surmaoja orebody required an increase in ventilation capacity. A new ventilation shaft was built with two main fans. The installation is near the entrance gate and only 1.7 kilometres from the nearest permanent dwelling. The main fans were first taken into use as exhaust fans in October 2014. Shortly after the fan installation, comments concerning fan noise were received from the neighbours. The first noise measurements were taken at the main fan installation site by Outokumpu personnel in March 2015. Due to higher than expected recorded values, during late June, 2015, a two-week environmental noise study was planned by the engineers and executed by a consultant specialized in noise measurement. The measurement results were analysed and compared to the requirements of the environmental permit and Outokumpu’s factory standards. While the measured values at the nearest dwelling were within the environmental permit limits, high noise values were recorded at the fan station. A second two-week study will be performed after construction of the main-fan heating station has been completed. Actions taken will depend on the outcome. INTRODUCTION The Kemi Mine is a part of the Outokumpu chain of integrated ferrochrome and stainless steel manufacturing in the Kemi-Tornio region in Finland. The mine itself is a large underground operation with a production capacity of 2.7 million tons of ore per annum. It is also the European Union’s only chrome mine, and at present (2015) the mine extracts 2.4 million tons of chrome ore per year. Safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness are hallmarks of the Kemi Mine. Environmental impact produced by the operation of the mine is limited due to the insolubility of the oxide chromium ore, the gravity-based and chemical-free enriching process as well as the closed circulation system of the process water which serves both the whole mine and the enrichment process (Outokumpu, 2015). Importance of the environmental impact of the Kemi Mine is amplified by its closeness to the cities of Kemi and Keminmaa with the nearest habitants living less than 2 km away from the mine site. To show the cooperation with residents the Kemi mine organizes special “neighbour days” for the habitants of the areas closest to the mine. Also, information letters are sent to the neighbours, when changes that may affect the neighbours are being planned and executed."

"1.INTRODUCTIONThis paper is based on the Lee Tunnel project, which is part of the Thames Water’s Tideway Project.The client Thames Water has employed a Joint Venture of Morgan Sindall/Vinci Grand Projets and Bachy Soletanche to undertake the design and construction of the project under the management of CH2M Hill at a value in excess of £635 million ($990 million). The 3 main elements of the tunnel project are the permanent lining to the shafts, the precast segmental lining, and the secondary tunnel lining. All 3 are reinforced with different types of Dramix steel wire fibers and each element will be described in this paper. This paper will explain the basic structural design of FRC (Fiber reinforced concrete) based on the post cracking residual strength and will describe all the steps of this project, the testing program realized to support innovative design and the main technical learning point. 2.BASIC CONCEPT OF STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FRCStructural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiberreinforcement. Other cases, like early age crack-control or fire resistance, are considered non-structural use of FRC. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Fibers can be used to improve the behavior at SLS (Service Limit State) since they can reduce crack spacing and crack width, thereby improving durability and they can be used to improve the behavior at ULS (Ultimate Limit State) where they can partially or totally substitute conventional reinforcement in most conditions. In the design process, the definition of the performance expected from the material is a key factor and the mix-design of the material has to be optimized for the required structural performance.2.1 Testing Method In order to ascertain the structural requirements requested for the FRC segments, preliminary testing on samples will be required and the effectiveness of the proposed solution will also be assured by the testing of full scale specimens. Structural design of FRC elements is based on the post-cracking residual strength provided by fiber reinforcement. For structural use, a minimum mechanical performance of FRC must be guaranteed. Nominal values of the material properties can be determined by performing a 3-point bending test on a notched beam according to EN14651 (figure 1) or by performing the ASTM C1609 beam test:"

LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine is a sublevel caving iron-ore mine located above the polar circle in northern Sweden. The mine has been proclaimed seismically active since 2008 after a magnitude 3 seismic event, according to Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN). At that time the Kiruna Mine did not have mine-wide seismic system. Since then, the Kiruna Mine experienced several damaging seismic events of which the largest one on the May 18, 2020. The magnitude, based on the moment tensor inversion results on data from the SNSN as well as seismic stations in Finland and Norway, is estimated to 4.2 ± 0.2 moment magnitude. The seismic event on the May 18, 2020 was located in the middle of the one of the productions areas and caused the major damage in the mine, damaging several kilometres of drifts on six mining levels, some of them beyond the practical repair. These damages affected four of ten production areas on several levels, some more some less. Luckily, no person got injured from the seismic event and the very long aftershock series. An important part in the whole process after the seismic event was information flow and decision-making process. It was very important to keep workers and community informed as that contributed transparency of decision-making and decreased the speculations. Resuming the production in the damaged areas in the safe manner, very soon become main focus for the mine management. It was obvious that not only rehabilitation of the areas is needed to resume the production. It was A MUST to understand the factors behind the seismic event and its mechanism to be able to avoid same situation and prevent seismic event of similar size. Mine engineers had to think outside the box to find the solutions to ‘rescue’ every drift that they could to be able to make good enough base for continued mining of the area. The paper describes actions taken in a very complex process of recovering the area that we from the beginning thought need to be abandon. Seismological analyses of the event on May 18, 2020 and past activity in the area, damage mapping, detailed studies of structures and geology, numerical modelling as well as engineering judgement were used as base for all our decisions how to proceed in attempt to restore mining of the area heavily damaged by 4.2 moment magnitude seismic event, in a safe way.

"INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is the nation’s first underground geologic repository for transuranic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste (see Figure 1). The WIPP facility was opened for operation in 1999 when the first TRU waste shipment arrived at the WIPP facility for disposal.WIPP facility does not employ typical production aspects of a conventional mine. Instead, the mining focus is on the quality of the excavation to ensure safe disposal of TRU and TRU-mixed waste (Walls, 1991). GEOLOGY WIPP underground repository is mined within a 2,000 feet-thick bedded-halite formation (Salado Formation) (see Figure 2). The WIPP underground repository is located approximately 2,150 feet beneath the surface near the center of the Salado Formation. Geologic criterion and site-selection factors evaluated for the selection of the repository included topography, depth, thickness, lateral extent, lithology, stratigraphy, structure, erosion, dissolution, subsidence, surface water, aquifers, hydrologic transport, climatic fluctuations, manmade penetrations (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980).FACILITY DESIGN Profit did not play a major role in the WIPP’s conception like in a conventional mine. This was due to the extensive amount of additional regulations and safety controls that had to be built into the WIPP facility. Since it is nuclear and hazardous waste disposal facility, it must meet certain federal and state requirements for TRU-mixed waste. One of the major regulatory drivers for the WIPP facility is defined in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA). One of the requirements in the WIPP LWA requires the DOE to submit documentation of continued compliance with Title 40 CFR Part 191, Subparts B, and C. These standards are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DOE must submit documentation of continued compliance (recertification) with these regulations every five years. In addition to the LWA, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is another major regulatory driver for the WIPP facility. Since the WIPP facility is categorized as a “Miscellaneous Unit” under 40 CFR, it must meet extensive environmental performance standards. These standards are defined in the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP). The HWFP defines the terms and conditions that the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department has determined necessary to protect human health and the environment (U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, 2015)."

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest. Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

"It is almost a given that post-disaster mine conditions will have compromised the mine ventilation system, resulting in a hazardous atmosphere in portions of the mine, and often complicated travel through debris fields and roof falls. Robotic technologies provide the opportunity to gather valuable information to assist decision making or lessen exposure to dangerous conditions. MSHA's Mine Emergency Operations Division (MEO) has utilized a fully permissible mine robot, the V2, for a number of years, constantly updating the unit as new technologies became available. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of the MINER Act Extramural Contract Program, examined the need for additional robotic units and ultimately funded three different types of prototype technologies: two robots, the Snake Robot and the Gemini-Scout, and a mine rescue robotic assist vehicle known as the ""Mule"". The Snake Robot is designed to be lowered through a borehole and to conduct surveillance (gas monitoring, video and audio) in the immediate vicinity, while the Gemini-Scout, designed to be deployed in the mine opening, serves as a more mobile and agile exploratory tool as compared to the MSHA V2 robot. The Mule was developed in response to needs expressed by mine rescue teams for a versatile remotely operated support vehicle and it will move from prototype to MEO utilization in the near future. This paper describes the development of the robot prototypes and discusses their limitations in the prototype stage, possible enhancements and potential applications, as well as the utilization of the Mule. INTRODUCTION The conditions in a coal mine may be dramatically altered after a mine fire or explosion. For example, the ventilation system may not be functioning correctly as control devices may be compromised or damaged beyond repair. The visibility in the mine opening may be limited due to accumulated smoke and dust. Roof support systems may be damaged or no longer functional. Equipment and materials may be strewn about the mine opening. Debris fields, blocked openings, roof falls, flooded areas, gas accumulations and active burning make it very difficult or impossible for those managing the post-event emergency to permit mine rescue teams to enter the mine to conduct search and rescue operations. With the evolution of robots and robotic assist technology there has been a proliferation of purpose-built units for the military, police and law enforcement agencies, urban search and rescue and those contending with hazardous environmental conditions. In each case, the technology used is designed to limit human exposure to the unsafe conditions or to provide access to areas under difficult conditions. For example, a specially-designed marine robot has been deployed into the damaged core of the Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to assess the conditions of the containment vessels, where melted fuel is believed to have accumulated. Human access to the area is prohibited due to dangerously elevated levels of radioactivity [1]. Multiple robots were deployed in Amatrice, Italy, to assist in the response after the 6.2-magnitude earthquake devastated the town. The robots were used to explore two medieval churches that were severely damaged and deemed too dangerous for human entry [2]. Tactical robots are regularly used by police and law enforcement agencies when the conditions of the emergency place intervening officers directly in harm's way [3]."

This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

While the Kansas River Tunnel is a relatively short, small diameter tunnel, the shaft excavation methods implemented were long and large on innovation and use of reverse circulation drilling equipment. ATS Drilling, L.P. used mechanical excavation techniques for both soil and rock segments of the 42.7 m (140 feet) and 38.1 m (125 feet) deep shafts that were 2.9 m (9.5 feet) and 4.1m (13.5 feet) diameter, respectively.
