The Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30% of the US utility, coal market due to the region's low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content. In 1997, production exceeded 240 Mt (265 million st). This was an in¬crease of 104 Mt (115 million st) since 1989 and 4.5 Mt (5 million st) above 1996. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) approaches. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the Basin where coal quality is higher. Coal characteristics SPRB coal is classified as subbituminous due to its low heating value and high moisture content. The coal is characterized by low sulfur and ash contents, low ash fusion temperatures and high reactivities. In 1997, the average heating content was 8,593 Btu/lb, with an average sulfur and ash content of 0.79 lbs S02/million [ ] Btu and 5.13%, respectively. The distinguishing characteristic of SPRB coal is its low sulfur content. Most SPRB coal contains less than 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu. This is the approximate definition of "compliance" coal for Phase II of the CA AA. Much of the coal, particularly in the southern part of the Basin, is referred to as "super-compliance" coal due to SO2 contents of between 0.4 and 0.7 lbs SO2/million Btu. In 1996, Rio Algom, Denison Mines and the Elliot Lake Research Field Station (ELRFS) formed a consortium to implement a regional environmental information management system (REIMS) for the Elliot Lake area in Ontario, Canada. ELRFS is an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, The discovery of uranium in the Elliot Lake region in post-World War II led to the development of 12 mines and 11 associated mills between 1955 and 1958. During the late 1980s, declining world demand for uranium, combined with the discovery of high-grade uranium ore in other areas of the world, made the Elliot Lake mines uneconomical. As a result, all area mines ceased opera¬tions by the end of 1996. The eight facilities and three tailings management areas operated by Denison Mines and Rio Algom's five mining waste management areas contain 150 Mt (165 million st) of potentially acid-generating tailings. The areas cover 13.2 km2 (3,265 acres) and receive drainage from an additional 13 km2 (3,212 acres). The primary objective of the joint initiative was to implement a personal-computer-based, regional, environmental-information management system for managing historical data and ongoing environmental programs in the Elliot Lake region. The Elliot Lake consortium decided it needed an information system with an integrated, process-oriented and requirements-driven approach to collect and manage the environmental information. Following a study of environmental information management systems currently used by the mining industry, the consortium decided to base REIMS on the "Envista" product. This is a commercially available, environmental information management system marketed by Envista Technologies of Saskatoon, Canada.

Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). In eastern and interior coalfields, material used is often mine refuse or flyash, both being undesirable on the surface and costly to dispose of in an environmentally acceptable manner. The Deister No. 7, "77" and "88" Coal Washing Tables have been used by the coal industry in the cleaning of finer sizes of coal (-1/2") since washing of coals became necessary. This paper will deal with the in-plant use of the CONCENCO "88" Deister Coal Washing Table, along with a brief description of the Deister Refuse Superscalper. Efficient in-plant operation of the Deister Coal Washing Table can be accomplished by the adjustment of six basic variables. These variables are: 1. Headmotion 2. Feed 3. Riffle Pattern 4. Dressing Water 5. End Elevation Adjustment 6. Side Tilt Adjustment VARIABLE NO. 1 HEADMOTION The reciprocating movement of the "88" Table is developed within the headmotion entirely by rotating eccentric weights. Four parallel shafts each carry pairs of eccentric weights (Figure 1-A). The shafts are geared together with gears of 2 to 1 and 1 to 1 ratios, so that the two shafts in vertical alignment which carry the small eccentric weights operate at twice the speed of the other two shafts. The other two shafts are also in vertical alignment with each other and carry large eccentric weights. As power is supplied to one high-speed shaft, once each revolution the forces produced by the large eccentric weights are reinforced and then opposed by the small eccentric weights in a horizontal plane. The direction of movement of the table decks is reversed much more sharply at the forward end than at the backboard end of the stroke, causing material to move toward the refuse end of the table. Because in the vertical plane all centrifugal forces oppose each other and cancel out, there is no vertical movement and virtually no impact to the support steel. The "88" Coal Washing Table is suspended by wire-rope cables from three overhead steel beams, and operates with a perfectly uniform and exact differential motion curve in every stroke (Figure 1-B). The decks, being attached to the headmotion, are reciprocated in a parallel line from the head- motion to the refuse corner at speeds varying from 260-300 strokes per minute. Both length of stroke and speed are set at the factory for the coal characteristic desired and should not be changed. A 3 HP motor is mounted on the top of the headmotion and uses 3 V-belts to transmit driving power to the headmotion. The headmotion must be kept running on a horizontal plane. Punch marks are provided on the side and end of the main frame for use in leveling the motion (Figure 1-C). In leveling the motion, the work must always be done with two cables. To level the long side of the headmotion both front or both rear cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level. To level side to side, both right side cables or left side cables are raised or lowered to bring motion back to level VARlABLE NO. 2 FEED When tabling different size coals, each deck of a "88" DIAGONAL-DECK Coal Washing Table will handle feeds as described in figure 2-A.

"NIOSH recently completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth which evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a single-filter filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) comparing the effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) evaluating the use of three different pressure monitoring devices to determine the performance of the filtration and pressurization system over time. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range (0.3–10 µm), and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static conditions and after outlier removal, the single-filter filtration unit installed offered a protection factor between 8 and 216, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor greater than 4-times that of the ? > 99 filter when evaluated over 60 minutes. The booth pressure monitors provided data that proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. INTRODUCTION Designed and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from physical hazards, such as flying rock, debris, and noise, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity [1]. But while it may be easier to quantify whether the A/C unit is working (measuring the temperature) or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it can be somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards. For over 15 years, NIOSH has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside of enclosed cabs of mobile equipment [2-5]. This work has led to the identification and mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems [6]. The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms [1, 7]. Stationary enclosures are similar to enclosed cabs; however, the volume of the work area can be significantly larger. In addition, workers who perform their duties in stationary enclosures tend to stay within the room for a greater percentage of the day, as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who may enter and exit frequently. Structural integrity can be easier to maintain as well, as there is typically less vibration and stress placed on these compartments as compared to mobile equipment. In addition to offering protection from dust and flying debris, enclosures must ensure that workers have a healthy supply of fresh air to avoid elevated levels of CO2, which are known to cause headache and dizziness, impairing cognitive function. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) states that enclosures should have no more than 1,100 ppm of CO2 when outside levels are 400 ppm [8]. In addition, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE) recommends a minimum airflow for enclosed cabs of at least 42.5 m3/hr (25.0 cfm) per person [9] to ensure an acceptable level of CO2."

"INTRODUCTION “Explosion protection” refers to techniques used to minimize the potential for electrical and electronic equipment to create an ignition while operating in a hazardous location (HAZLOC). In particular, U.S. coal mines are required to use equipment in certain areas of the mine that has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in a methane and coal dust environment to limit the risk of the equipment creating an ignition-capable spark or a thermal energy ignition. In general, MSHA’s regulations for explosion protection recognize two techniques: the use of explosion-proof enclosures (XP boxes) and 2-fault intrinsic safety for electrical and electronic equipment. For 2-fault intrinsically safe (IS) equipment, the U.S. mining industry requirements are unique in that the equipment is certified by MSHA. The criteria MSHA uses to evaluate equipment for intrinsic safety, as required by Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) [30 CFR, Sections18.20(b), 18.68(a)(1), 19.1(b), 20.1(c)(2), 22.6, 23.6, and 27.20(a)], is published in a document referred to as ACRI2001 (1). Outside of U.S. underground mining, many industries and countries accept equipment that is designed to a consensus-based international standard (ANSI/ISA 60079-11 is the U.S. version). The purpose of this study is to provide an overall assessment of the ANSI/ISA 60079-11 standard on 2-fault intrinsic safety and the MSHA ACRI2001 acceptance criteria, and determine if the ANSI/ISA document can be an alternative to ACRI2001 while maintaining an equivalent or better level of safety for miners. There are many drivers for this study. First, immediately after the 2006 MINER Act (2) was passed, there was a perception in the industry that the unique MSHA requirements were contributing to delays or restricting the availability of equipment to meet the requirements of the Act. Additionally, the MINER Act required that mine operators submit an accident response plan for MSHA approval, to be reviewed every six months. MSHA is required to determine if these plans reflect the most recent credible scientific research and make use of currently commercially available technology. There is a concern, as expressed in a recent National Academy of Science (NAS) study (3), that the unique requirements for U.S. mining may be limiting the technologies available to coal miners and technology options for mine operators. Accordingly, the study recommended that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and MSHA re-examine their technology approval and certification processes to ensure they are not deterring innovation, and explore opportunities to cooperate with other international approval organizations to harmonize U.S. and international standards without compromising safety. Lastly, the National Technology Transfer Act (NTTA) and the accompanying Office of Management and Budget’s OMB-119 circular mandate the use of consensus-based standards by federal agencies. However, for U.S. mining operations, MSHA cannot accept such standards unless a determination is made that such standards provide an equivalent level of protection for the miner, per the requirements of the 1977 Mine Act, the 2006 MINER Act, and 30 CFR Part 18 regulations."

The purpose of this paper is to present validation studies of the mine-fire simulator using data gathered from an actual mine fire which occurred in November 1991 at the Pattiki Mine. To develop the model of the ventilation system with the fire in this validation study, the following adjustments were made: (1) flow and gas distribution in the entire ventilation network, and (2) fire parameters matching the data recorded by the monitoring system. After close correlations between simulation and real data were achieved, additional analysis of the ventilation system with the mine fire was performed. Presented and discussed in this paper are the following stages of the fire at the Pattiki Mine: (1) early fire (before the fire was detected), (2) preparation for and fire fighting with water, (3) fire sealing, and (4) fire extinguishing. This study evaluates the suitability of the computer software package for modeling underground fires. The paper also discusses the importance of the on-line monitoring system for the validation process.

The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).

Large volumes of slags, with varying mineralogical and geochemical characteristics, are produced annually by the ferrous and nonferrous metallurgical industry. Most of them are considered as potential secondary resources and may be valorized, following the principles of circular economy, for the recovery of critical elements, including energy transition metals. Apart from the economic benefits, valorization of slags may contribute to the competitiveness of the metal industry and the conservation of natural resources. Valorization also results in minimization of environmental impacts on soils and waters in slag disposal areas, due to the prevention of solubilization and subsequent migration of potentially hazardous elements. The present study utilizes ferronickel (FeNi) slag for the production of alkali-activated materials. The effects of the main experimental parameters, including sodium hydroxide (NaOH) molarity, silica/sodium oxide (SiO2 /Na2O) molar ratio in the activating solution, precuring and curing time, curing temperature and aging period on several properties of the final products, are assessed.

Topsoil for revegetation projects is in demand in many urban areas. In this case history, a large aggregate producer manufactured a topsoil from three waste materials. The topsoil was produced in a 200,000 m2 (50-acre) abandoned gravel pit that still had additional gravel under 10 m (30 ft) of overburden uneconomic to strip directly. The topsoil was produced by rotary mixing of sludge, overburden, and a lime admixture; solar drying; and stripping and stockpiling of the product. A major problem was an increase of topsoil drying times for stripping from 40 to over 100 hours when it was rewet by storms. The problem was solved by a research project that evaluated over 50 formulations and over 20 waste materials. . The final formula dried in 15 hours and contained 3-parts sandy mine spoil, 1-part sewage sludge, and 2 % spent-bed, a granular quick-lime produced during power-plant flue-gas desulfurization.

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rockmass strength. Past studies have largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. This paper proposes a stochastic approach to produce rockmass strength from laboratory rock tests. Based on the laboratory data, MATLAB with an extreme value stochastic model generated a database for each physico-mechanical property of the rock. Then finite-difference software FLAC2D simulated laboratory-sized rock specimens. Random material properties in MATLAB were generated using the grids developed in the numerical model. The random properties were then applied to the final FLAC2D model. Model runs simulated the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produced compressive strengths that were lower than those from the deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen were different from those observed in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influenced the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

Introduction Charles III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, established one of the first mining schools in Europe on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbanya (Schemnitz in German and Banska Stiavmica in Slovakian). The old city, built around the ancient gold mines, is shown in a contemporary engraving in Fig. 1. Charles' historical decree consisted of 13 chapters and included: the deed of foundation, the definition of grants, instruction for educational policy and curriculum, disciplinary rules, and the appointment of personnel. The first professor of the school, Samuel Mikoviny, gave his first lecture the same year, in December 1735. The 250th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Mines was celebrated Sept. 2-4, 1985, in Miskolc. It was attended by representatives of other Hungarian and of several foreign technical universities. A silver medallion (Fig. 2) was issued to commemorate the occasion and a series of lectures

Fractal theory was horn in the mid-1970s. Since then, its application has been spreading day by day, from mathematics and geology to areas such as geophysics, physics and material sciences. In this paper, fractal models are developed to characterize particle size distribution and surface area. Theoretical formulas are derived for the computation of fractal dimensions D (size) and D[s] (surface area). The models developed are applied using experimental data of particle size distribution and surface area obtained from the Microtrac Particle Size Analyzer for dust processed by several size reduction devices. The theoretical models and the experimental data are found in good agreement. The fractal dimensions obtained are D = 1.350 to 1.770 and D[s] = 2.058 to 2.584 for fine coal dust particles (< 15 µm) produced by various size reduction mechanisms. The physical meaning of these fractal dimensions is also related to the dust generation processes.

A detailed investigation of the stability in cyanide solutions of native gold and gold-silver tellurides in a flotation concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, has been undertaken to assess whether leaching under different conditions can be used to quantify the distribution of Au between native gold and gold-silver tellurides, as suggested by, for example, Chryssoulis and Cabri (1990). The leaching was carried out on +20 µm native gold and gold-silver tellurides separated from a high-grade flotation concentrate and then diluted with barren quartz. The material leached assayed 270 ppm Au and 118 ppm Te and the leach conditions used were:- Stage 1: Leaching in dilute cyanide (0 .1 % ) at pH 9 .5 for 24 hours to dissolve native gold but not gold-silver tel­lurides. Stage 2: Leaching the residue from Stage 1 in strong cyanide (2%) and pH 12.5 for 96 hours to dissolve gold-silver tellurides.

Good morning ladies and gentleman. During 1995 Prof. R. P. King (University of Utah Comminution Center) presented 2 papers on new horizons in comminution: "Comminution Research in the United States " was presented at the 1995 Meeting of the National Mining Association, while "Comminution: Meeting the Needs of Fundamental Research in the Mineral Industry" was presented at the 2nd SME Research Forum - 1995. In both papers a very interesting graph named "Energy usage for various comminution schemes" illustrated some poignant issues proposed by Prof. King. We do think that some of Prof. King's ideas might very well serve as "warm-ups" for this Comminution Panel Discussion, which are ultimately the goals to be reached by the 3-minute presentations. Thus, we shall be addressing in the sequence Prof. King's most relevant ideas (as well as introducing his graph), intending therefore show how important creative and state-of-the-art Mill Modeling is, if it is to become a Tool to Effective Cost-Saving Optimization Strategies.

For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world&apos;s aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world&apos;s commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted&apos;s discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville&apos;s method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer&apos;s work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today&apos;s aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:&apos; building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth&apos;s crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

INTRODUCTION The subway line B of Toulouse (France) has been realized with three different tunnel boring machines (TBM) techniques: Contracts 2 and 5 are excavated with earth-pressure balanced TBM, Contract 4 with a slurry shield TBM, and Contract 3 with a compressed-air TBM. The first three machines are around 7.7 m in diameter, while the last one is 5.3 m. Moreover, a small part of the line (50 m) has been excavated by a conventional method. The tunnels run through the Toulouse molasses, composed of hard sandy clay with pockets and lenses of dense sand. Geotechnical investigations have shown that in these formations, K0 is greater than 1, around 1.8 at a depth of 25 m (Serratrice,2005) and that geotechnical characteristics are homogenous on the whole layout (? =22 kN/m3, Su = 300 kPa, c&apos; = 30 kPa, F&apos; = 32°). The water table is found between 2 and4 m below ground level. As geology, stratigraphy and tunnel cover (between 10 and 20 m) are almost identical, a comparison of movements induced by the excavation by each of the four excavation techniques is possible. This paper presents the soil mass movement measures in the case of the conventional excavation method and in the case of TBM sections. It shows how tunneling parameters may explain the different surface movements observed during excavation. For the sake of simplicity, only the results of Contract 2 (earth pressure balanced TBM)will be presented. MONITORING Monitoring for the Conventional Method Section For the conventional method section (Vanoudheusden et al. 2005) the mass soil movements are measured with two inclinometers and one multi-point extensometer borehole with automatic data acquisition (Figure 1). Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC&apos;s lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today&apos;s fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run
