Provide the U.S. mining industry with a user friendly computer program to calculate stresses in underground coal mines in order to improve safety conditions for mine workers. Capabilities of MULSIM/NL MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines. It can analyze one or two parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) non¬linear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to efficiently simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/ NL computes energy release rate due to mining using the most recent concepts advanced by Salamon.

Prolonged exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust is responsible for coal workers' pneumoconi¬osis (CWP): Furthermore, miners who show evidence of higher radiographic categories of simple CWP are at increased risk of developing progressive massive fibro¬sis (PMF). As of 1990, there were nearly 130,000 coal miners in the United States. "' This excludes mines that produce less than 10,000 tons annually and the anthracite coal mines. Estimates indicate that at age 58, an average of 7/1000 U.S. workers and 89/1000 U.K workers will have developed PMF(2-1) Health research studies have iden¬tified that the risk of developing and the severity of CWP arc directly related to (1) the amount of respirable dust exposure and (2) the coal rank.,'- The rank of coal is its stage of formation in the series peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, and anthra¬cite (in order of increasing rank). The rank of coal can also be represented by the com¬mercially important characteristics specified by its proximate analysis: fixed carbon, vol¬atile matter, mineral matter, and moisture content.

Towards the goal of improving safety, economy and efficiency of scaling in underground metal/nonmetal mines, Battelle developed a combination prying/hammering scaling tool. A prototype was subjected to limited testing 1) to verify its operational functions and 2) to assess its potential capability in future underground testing.

In 2001, 14,623 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This was an increase of 210 mining operations compared to 2000. Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone (29%), coal (15%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).

In 2007, a total of 14,871 mining operations reported employment data to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Almost half (48.4%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone mines (31.2%), coal mines (13.7%), nonmetal mines (4.9%), and metal mines (1.9%).

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). The National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has undertaken a collaborative study with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), withstand the underground coal mining environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. Apparatus tested included the CSE SR-100, the Draeger OXY-K Plus, the MSA Life-Saver 60, and the Ocenco EBA 6.5 and M-20. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSRs in the tenth phase of testing, from July 2004 to March 2006. The SCSRs were tested on a breathing and metabolic simulator and on a human subject walking on a treadmill. The tests performed in this study are not the tests used for certification (Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 84). The tests performed in this study continue until the apparatus are empty to enable comparison of new versus deployed apparatus. The method for obtaining deployed SCSRs for this evaluation was not a random selection from the deployed population of SCSRs. We sought older apparatus with visible environmental impact rather than newer apparatus, and we attempted to sample a wide range of deployment modes. Although the results of these tests are useful for observing performance of the tested SCSRs, they are not representative of all deployed SCSRs. This report is the last of 10 report phases begun in 1982. Previous reports describe phases 1 through 9 [Kyriazi et al. 1986; Kyriazi and Shubilla 1992, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006] A new evaluation protocol, with revised sampling strategies, test methods, and reporting procedures, is currently being designed to enhance the applicability of the results. The results of these studies suggest that the large majority of SCSRs that pass their inspection criteria can be relied upon to provide a safe level of life support for mine escape purposes. However, the storage and handling in the mining environment seems to have caused performance degradation in some of the apparatus. In this phase, phase 10, we found some CSE SR-100s (93 tested) that exhibited high CO2 levels, stuck-together breathing hoses, starter-O2 failure, breathing hose punctures and tears, high breathing pressures, and loose particulates in the breathing hose. The loose particulates caused coughing in human-subject tests. One MSA Life-Saver 60 (20 tested) in this phase had a stuck-open relief valve. One Ocenco EBA 6.5 (50 tested) had an unattached O2 supply hose. An unexplained phenomenon occurred with two Ocenco M-20s (20 tested): low O2 flow rates preventing their successful use. Almost all of the failures noted involved units that failed their inspection criteria.

To determine the relative permeability of the soil a series of percolation tests were performed at the three locations of interest at Lanse, i.e., 3C, 03A and strip bank, and KA and KB at Kato. Soil cores were removed to 2, 8, 16, 24 and 32 inch depths with the thin wall sampler tube, each core separated from the next by about fifteen feet. Then two-foot-long thin-wall tubes were inserted into the 2, 8, and 16 inch deep holes and three-foot long tubes were inserted into the 24 and 36 inch deep holes. Each tube was tamped down about one inch further to assure a bottom seal; the tubes were filled with water and the rate of fall was measured. The test is similar to those done for septic tank percolation studies 6; but is not quantitatively related to Darcy&apos;s coefficient of hydraulic conductivity because the water can flow in three dimensions from the bottom of the tube. The measurements are dependent on the length of test, since the rate of fall is a function of the head. Therefore, it should be noted that the 24 and 32 inch deep tubes should give faster percolation rates because of the one foot greater head. At locations 03A and 3C the data show a sharp decrease in percolation at increasing depth, Table XV. However, the percolation at 03A and 32 inch depth is much higher than at 3C (0.2 vs. 0.01 inches/hour); the fragipan layer must be deeper at the 3C location since this area does experience a perched water table. On the strip bank the rates of falling head are randomly variable, appearing to be as much dependent on the particular location of insertion as on depth of placement. For example, water drained from the 16 inch tube as fast as it was added, probably into a sub-surface cavity or crevice. At Kato the tubes were more difficult to place because of interference of tree roots. For this reason 2 inch deep tubes were not inserted. These short tests at Kato were inconclusive, varying extensively when the tubes were moved. Field permeability tests were also performed in two (previously described) eight-inch diameter permeater tubes at Lanse and one at Kato. Because the soil is confined inside the tube, hydraulic conductivity can be calculated according to Darcy&apos;s flow equation. The high values reported in Table XVI experienced when the tubes were rewetted from a dry surface condition, enable us to conclude that infiltration is faster than the saturated permeability of the soil. In contrast to the falling head percolation tests, these permeability results do not show a high variation between locations.

"The few previous observations of the effect of turbulence on limits of inflammability have been made on a small scale in turbulence produced either by a fan or by movement of the mixture.By a suitable amount of turbulence from a fan the lower limit of methane was 5 per cent as compared with 5 per cent observed for quiescent mixtures in the same vessel.3 With a streaming movement of the gas mixture within the range of speed from 35 to 65 centimeters per second (69 to 128 feet a minute) the lower limit was approximately 5 percent,4 For a quiescent mixture of ethane the lower limit was 3.10 per cent ethane, but with fan running at a moderate speed a 3 per cent mixture exploded.5The object of the tests herein reported was (1) to determine the lower limit of natural gas in a mixture of natural gas and air Which would be ignited and propagate violently when the turbulence was produced by explosives fired from a cannon into the mixture; (2) to observe the behavior when the mixture contained less than this low limit; and (3) to determine how turbulence produced by a fan affects thin limit.Four series of tests were run, three of which were to determine the effect of different sources of ignition: Tests with (1) an electric igniter; (2) 3F black blasting powder stemmed with 2 pounds of dry fire clay stemming used to ignite the mixture, and (3) 40 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite unstemmed. The fourth was made to study the effect of turbulence produced by a two-speed electric fan, using an electric igniter as the source of ignition.In both series of tests with explosives, charges of 50 and 200 were used to determine the effect of increased quantity of explosives on the lower limit of natural gas."

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960&apos;s and the first half of the 1970&apos;s. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon&apos;s small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country&apos;s sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country&apos;s oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon&apos;s refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara&apos;s capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

Through the hearty cooperation of the State coal-mine inspectors, the bureau is able to present in this paper a a complete statement of the coal-mine fatalities occurring throughout the United States during the calendar year 1919. The reports received from the inspectors for the year just closed show a reduction of 10.58 per cent in coal-mine fatalities as compared. with 1918, while in 1918 the reduction was 4.3 per cent from 1917 figures. The total number killed was 2,307 in 1919 and 2,580 in 1918, a reduction of 273. There was a decrease of 128, or 25 per cent, in fa tali ties resulting from mine cars and locomotives, and a decrease of 198, or 15 per cent, in the fa tali ties due to fall of coal or rock. Surface accidents show a decline of about 25 per cent as compared with the previous year. There were, however, increases in accidents due to gas and dust explosions and also explosives. There occurred during the year nine disasters in which five or more men were killed, representing a total of 201 fatalities. The worst disaster of the year was the one occurring at the Baltimore Tunnel No. 2, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., resulting from the explosion or burning of a number of kegs of powder, by which 92 lives were lost. This disaster emphasizes the need for stricter regulations relating to hauling men and explosives into the mine at the same time. The question of whether electricity was responsible or not does not affect the consideration of the various dangers which arise in underground transportation and handling of explosiveB. At best the handling and hauling of explo.sives is hazardous and such being the case, no one, other than the necessary attendants, should be permitted to ride in cars or cages transporting explosives. As a result of this disaster, the report b of the coroner's jury to the governor of Pennsylvania brings out some important dangers to be avoided in the use and transportation of explosives.

Large quantities of gasoline are lost each year by evaporation from bulk-storage station tanks. The rate of evaporation from bulk-station tanks is influenced by two principal factors: First, the vapor pressure of the gasoline in the tank; and second, the amount of "breathing" of the tank. The vapor pressures of the gasoline govern the amount of the gasoline vapor in the air-vapor mixture above the gasoline in a tank at a given temperature. This is one of the principal factors in determining the total pressure of the air-vapor mixture within the tank. The "breathing" of the tank is caused by the inflow of air from the atmosphere during certain periods of the day and the expulsion of the air-vapor mixtures at other times, caused by atmospheric variations. The pressure built up within a tank and the amount of gasoline in the air-vapor mixture are both a direct function of the temperature existing within the tank. Therefore, two of the most common methods for reducing evaporation losses from bulk-station tanks are: (1) The use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with relief valves and operated at 1 or 2 ounces of pressure and about 1/2-ounce vacuum; (2) reducing the temperature of tanks and their contents by painting them a light color, by insulation, and in some instances by using water sprays. Water sprays, although effective, usually are too expensive to operate economically. In order to determine and compare the effects of various colors, insulation, and pressure in reducing the evaporation losses of gasoline held in storage in bulk-storage tanks, the Bureau of Mines made observations from May 29 to October 15. 1930, on five horizontal tanks of 12,000-gallon capacity each, which were erected at the plant of Black. Sivalls and Bryson Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo. This report gives in detail the results of these evaporation tests.

As part of the Bureau&apos;s intensive investigation of domestic manganese deposits, lots of ore for testing were collected by Bureau engineers during examinations of several properties in Juab County, Utah. One low-grade and two intermediate-grade samples (13.5, 25.3 and 27.5 percent manganese) were procured by engineers of the Bureau of Mines from the 900--and 1,100-foot levels of&apos; the Tintic Standard mine, situated 2 miles southeast of Eureka, Utah. The ore bodies were described as blocks of ore approximately 60 feet long, 40 feet wide, and 20 to 100 feet deep. The manganese-iron association in the Tintic Standard ores was intimate, and no significant concentration of the low-grade sample was made by ore dressing, However, both of&apos; the higher-grade samples were readily beneficiated to marketable manganese products. Ore from the Oxen No. 5974 claim, 2 miles northeast of Eureka, Utah was low in grade (19.4 percent manganese) and was not amenable to the production of high-grade concentrates owing to the intimacy of association of the manganese minerals with silica. However, a fair manganese recovery was obtained in a product that, when sintered, assayed plus 40 percent manganese. The ore body is reported to be a replacement in limestone and is composed of manganese oxides intermixed with silica, decomposed rhyolite, and limestone. The Fields property consists of five mineral claims situated 3 miles north of Eureka, Utah. The deposit is a replacement in a contact between limestone and a quartz dike. Tests were made on representative samples of a 50-ton lot stored on the property. Although the mineral association in the ore (22.2 percent manganese) is not particularly complex, the physical properties of the manganese minerals render the ore refractory to ore-dressing beneficiation. As the ores varied widely in physical and chemical characteristics, samples from each property were considered as separate ore-dressing problems.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining Co.&apos;s Granite Mountain shaft. How this insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the lire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest pro¬ducer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

"This report describes an examination and preliminary exploration of the Magnet Cove Rutile Co. property in Hot Spring County, Ark. The company in 1944 was producing titania for use in-the welding-rod and metallurgical industries but later ceased operations. The deposit appeared to contain potential reserves of rutile ore, and the Bureau of lanes in 1945 conducted an examination designed (1) to obtain samples for ore-dressing tests and (2) to gather information regarding the grade, character, and size of the deposit. This report presents the data obtained by geologic mapping, geophysical surveying, churn drilling, and core drilling. Beneficiation tests are being made at the Bureau of Mines Rolla, No. station, on the samples taken and will be discussed in a later report.The Magnet Cove operation had been called to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, and in view of the potential reserve of titanium-bearing material, it was decided to obtain samples for ore-dressing tests. Churn drilling was selected as a means of obtaining representative samples, and geologic mapping and geophysical surveying were done to throw more light on the nature of the deposit. Subsequently, a few holes were core-drilled.The property contains the NE1/4, W1/2 fractional NW1/4 and 82 acres of the N part of SE of sec. 18, and -29 acres of the SW1/4 NW1/4 sec. 17, all in T. 3 S., R. 17 W., Hot Spring County, Ark. The mine and mill are about 1 mile by graveled road northeast of U. S. Highway 270, a paved road connecting Malvern, 10 miles south and Hot Springs, 12 miles west. The area is served by two railroads, the Missouri Pacific, which passes through Malvern and Hot Springs and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific,,has a line connecting Malvern and Hot Springs an passes about 2 miles south of the property. A natural-gas pipe line and an electric power line reach the property."
