Experiments were conducted al temperatures of 480° to 800° C. and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. to determine the effect of coal residence time on the conversion of a high-volatile bituminous C coal to liquid and gaseous products when using a semicontinuous apparatus designed fur rapid heating and cooling of reactants. The objective of the studies at high temperatures was to determine if appreciable quantities of coal could be converted to gaseous hydrocarbons and low-boiling liquid hydrocarbons. Experiments at lower temperatures were designed to indicate shifts in product distribution with respect to temperature and to learn more about the general mechanism of the reaction when using close control of coal residence time. One percent molybdenum, based on m.a.f. (moisture-and ash-free) coal, was used throughout this investigation. At 800° C., 6,000 p.s.i.g., and "zero" residence time) the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was about 38 percent and the yield of oil about 4.5 percent, based on m.a.f. coal. With IS minutes residence time, under the same conditions, the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons was approximately 80 percent with no increase in yield of oil. Apparently at 800° C., and hydrogen pressure of 6,000 p.s.i.g. coal was rapidly carbonized to char with expulsion of volatiles. Char was then slowly hydrogenated to gaseous hydrocarbons without production of oil.

This paper presents data and theorem to calculate the risk of experiencing undesirable lightning related events while blasting or while engaged in other lightning sensitive activities. The paper provides an overview of lightning hazards in blasting operations and a brief history of lightning related blasting accidents. Lightning continues to be the primary cause of premature initiations of explosives in mining, on average, over two such incidents are reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) each year. The energy contained in lightning discharges and how this energy sets off explosives in mining is presented. Three categories of lightning warning methods: public media, lightning detectors, and atmospheric electrostatic field measurement are discussed. The remainder of the paper presents recently acquired data on the spatial characteristics of lightning development. This data is used to estimate the risk assumed by blasters under certain conditions. Risk estimations are made for electric and nonelectric blasting if persons are evacuated when cloud-to-ground (c-g) lightning approaches within a certain distance. For example, about 0.6% of all c-g lightning strikes have no other c-g lightning strikes within 25 miles in the previous 30 minutes. The paper shows that a typical blaster using nonelectric initiation in a high lightning density area with a 100% accurate lightning detector set to alarm at 25 miles would have a lightning caused unplanned detonation every 14,000 years

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. The Bureau of Mines investigated a method for increasing the leaching rate of bulk superalloy scrap to facilitate recycling and recovery of critical metals such as Ni, Co, and Cr. Three superalloys were investi- gated, the cast-nickel-base superalloy IN-738, the wrought-nickel-base superalloy Rene-41, and the cast-cobalt-base superalloy Mar-M-509. Superalloys melted with 20, 30, 40, and 50 pct Al metal to form inter- metallic compounds were easily crushed to a convenient particle size and reacted rapidly with acid solutions which dissolved the metals. For example, leaching 1/2-in pieces of unalloyed IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dissolved about 0.5 pct, while leaching 10 g of minus 20-mesh 30 pct Al-70 pct IN-738 with excess 6N HC1 at 95° C for 2 h dis- solved 96.2 pct.

"Stable coal radicals (SCRs) were detected by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the lung tissue of autopsied coal miners. The SCR concentrations were measured in the lung tissues from 98 coal miners with and without (a) coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), (b) cancer, and (c) a history of cigarette smoking. Concentrations of SCRs were also determined in the lungs of nonminer controls. The SCR concentration was related to longer mining tenure, CWP disease severity, lung cancer, and cigarette smoking. The mean concentration of SCRs in the lung tissues of miners with 30 ± 1.4 y of coal mining exposure was 5.3 ± 1.3 x 10"" spins/g versus controls who had a nondetec¬table level (< 10 15 spins/g). An increase in disease severity was accompanied by a progressive increase in SCR concentration. A SCR concentration of 4.8 ± 0.7 x 10"" spins/g was found for simple CWP (with moderate coal macules) versus 7.8 ± 4.6 spins/g lung tissue for complicated CWP (with progressive massive fibrosis). Significantly higher (i.e., 10 x 10"") concentrations of SCR in the coal miners' lung tissues were associated with an exposure history in the anthracite regions of northeastern Pennsylvania. These results in¬dicate a possible role for SCRs in the disease process. Furthermore, ESR appears to be an adequate methodology for the quantitation of coal dust retained in the lung and for distinguishing exposures to anthracite and/or bituminous coal.THE PREVALENCE AND SEVERITY of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly between geographic locations, mines, and coal fields irrespective of comparable levels of exposure to coal mine dust These differences cannot be fully explained by the presence of silica and other minerals in the coal mine dust.' Rank of coal is also an important factor in the pathogenesis of CWP. Equally important is that the prevalence of CWP decreases from east to west in the United States,' and South Wales miners develop more severe CWP than miners in Scotland.' However, there are conflicting reports that cast uncertainty on the influence of rank of coal in the development of CWP."" These problems are complicated but will be solved as new technology emerges and as more is learned about the disease process."

A bench-scale study was made of removing hydrogen sulfide from synthesis gas at elevated pressure by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips. The gas contained 0.02 to 0.06 percent oxygen. The removal of hydrogen sulfide by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips is more efficient at elevated pressure. At constant space velocity, longer periods of operation at 400 p.s.i.g. are possible before the exit gas reaches a given maximum concentration of hydrogen sulfide, compared with 200 p.s.i.g. or atmospheric pressure. In tests at room temperature, 60° C., and 100° C., the most effective removal of hydrogen sulfide was obtained at room temperature and the least effective at 100° C. Dry impregnated wood chips removed only about half as much hydrogen sulfide as chips wetted to a water content of 50 percent.

The effect of various ion concentrations on uranium absorption from a sodium carbonate solution by a strong-base, anion resin was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in support of its objective to help assure an adequate uranium supply for future needs. The studies were conducted to improve the recovery of uranium from in situ leach solutions by ion exchange. The effects of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, and sulfate ions were examined. Relatively low (less than 5 g/l) concentrations of chloride, sulfate, and bicarbonate were found to be detrimental to the absorption of uranium. High (greater than 10 g/l) carbonate concentrations also adversely affected the uranium absorption. In addition, the effect of initial resin form was investigated in tests of the chloride, carbonate, and bicarbonate forms; resin form was shown to have no effect on the absorption of uranium.

The Federal Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a pressure-gasification pilot plant for producing synthesis gas directly from pulverized coal, oxygen, and steam. A pressure-gasification pilot plant has been constructed, and an investigation was made with the following basic objectives: 1. Determining the effect of varying pressure (75, 100, 150, and 300 p.s.i.g.), coal rate (400, 700, and 1,000 pounds per hour), and oxygen-to-coal ratio (8 to 11 std, c,f. per pound), on percentage of carbon gasified, oxygen and coal requirements per unit of CO + H2 produced, exit-gas temperature, and heat loss. The steam-to-coal ratio was maintained at approximately 0.3 pound per pound. 2. Development of a stabilized gasification zone or reaction space. 3. Improvement in operability of the pilot plant.

"In the United States there are hundreds of underground and surface (inside and outside) inclines at coal mines on which trips of cars are continually being run with coal, rock, supplies, and men. The safety of the men and prevention of damage to the slopes depend, excluding the personal element of the hoist-man, on the strength and condition of the wire cable, draw bars, and the couplings, and on the links of chains and pins as well. Within a recent period of four weeks there have been two runaway trips, one on the surface and one underground; it seems desirable to call attention of mechanical engineers and others at coal mines to the need for closer and more frequent inspection of the cable, draw bars, coupling links and pins, derailing devices, wheels, brakes, and other parts of cars or trips on which men are hauled on inclines. This bureau has never published anything on this class of accident heretofore.How frequently runaway trips occur is not known. If no serious injury or fatalit has to be reported to the State authorities, a number of such happenings may occur and not be mentioned outside of the immediate vicinity of the mine.Runaway trips can and do result in considerable loss of life, in injuries, and damage, either at or near the place of the break, or throughout a mine by causing an explosion of gas or coal-dust or both, This report is restricted to a study of the mechanical and physical phases of car trip construction and of the metal of couplings and ropes; derailed trips are not included and may be the subject of another paper. There is no need to mention gas accumulations, coal-dust and rock-dusting, open lights, protected power lines, and permissible equipment, because these have all been well covered in Bureau of Mines publications which have been widely distributed and partly or wholly reprinted by others.Most of the items regarding the runaway trips tabulated have been abstracted from reports made respectively by Clarence Hall, W.O. Equilibrium phase diagram studies of zirconium- rare earth metal alloys by the Bureau of Mines at its Albany Metallurgy Research Center prompted the development of a rapid gravimetric method for determining rare earths in zirconium in which the rare earths are absorbed from sulfuric acid solution of the alloy on a cation exchange resin . The sample in 10 percent H2SO4 is introduced into the column , the zirconium is eluted with 10 percent H2SO4 , and the rare earths are eluted with (NH4 )2SO4 solution and precipitated with NH4OH . A tracer technique was employed to determine the efficiency of the procedure . Y203 and europium 154 - 152 (Oak Ridge ) were added to 10 g of zirconium and taken through the entire procedure . Recovery averaged 97.6 percent on 0.002 μg europium in the rare earth fraction . Rare earths were determined in the range 0.10 to 90 percent .

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.

This manual covers the operation and lubrication procedures for the Eimco Pumpable Roof Bolting Machine. This machine meets U. S. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2G Approval. This manual is divided into three major parts: 1. Machine dimensions; 2. operating instructions and; 3. Lubrication. Whenever front or rear, right or left arc mentioned it is assumed that the reader is standing behind the machine looking toward the boom. The boom is at the front of the machine. Safety When leaving machine parked on an incline turn wheels into the rib or block wheels. Do not run over power cables. Make sure your power cable is up out of the way so others can&apos;t run over it. Machine has a fire suppressor system for the power unit. The remote actuator (pressure cylinder) is located at the operator&apos;s station. Components and service procedures on page 59.

Various chemicals, including compounds of copper and lead, were added to a mixture of No. 2 and No. 6 fuel oils that was fired in an experimental furnace. Tests were made to determine (1) the effectiveness of these chemicals in removing soot deposits on probes devised to simulate heat-transfer surfaces in boilers and (2) the effectiveness of the chemicals in preventing the deposition of soot on the probe surface. Test conditions were regulated so that the temperature of the products of combustion adjacent to the probes was in the range of 625° to 700° F. The clean-metal temperatures of the air-cooled probes were comparable with the water-tube temperatures in boilers operated at 40 to 100 p.s,i.g. The dosages of the fuel oil additives used in these tests were generally larger than those usually recommended for most proprietary compounds.

A lead smelting process that appears to present minimal pollution problems has been developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center. Ten and 100 g samples of PbS mill concentrates were vaporized at 1,000° to 1,100° C in a furnace with an inert gas atmosphere during a 2-hour period. The PbS vapor was transported by the inert carrier gas to the reduction zone of the furnace where it was reduced at the same temperature with excess hydrogen to metallic lead. Lead of 99.9 pct purity was produced. The H2S formed can be decomposed into elemental sulfur and water vapor by a modified Claus process. Approximately 90 pet of the Cu and 70 pct of the Ag and Zn remain in the residue and are potentially recoverable. More than 98 pct of the lead in the concentrates was extracted.
