Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

Successful longwall mining requires a good roof control. A good roof control implies that: (1) no excessive pressure is build up in the face powered supports, and (2) chain pillars are designed in such a way that panel entries are well protected and interactions between adjacent panels are minimized. A clear understanding of strata behavior around longwall panels due to face movement is, therefore, the foremost requirement for achieving better roof control. This dissertation is designed to analyze the effects of strata behavior on longwall panels due to the mining activities. The following topics are studied: (1) the weighting, phenomena and their effects on front abutments, and (2) the chain pillar stability and pillar design under various roof conditions. Three dimensional finite element analysis was employed. The effect of parameters such as overburden depth, mechanical properties of the immediate roof and main roof, panel width, and size of chain pillar on (t) and (2) were analyzed. Four typical models were utilized to simulate various phases of panel extraction under various combinations of the above parameters; model one is to simulate the beginning of panel mining; model two is to simulate the situation that longwall face has passed more than half of panel length; model three is to simulate the completion of panel production; and model four is to simulate the second panel mining. The following formulae have been developed by applying multiple regression model to analyze the finite clement results: (1) a formula that classifies the type of root strata at the face area. (2) formulae that predict the first weighting and periodic weighting lengths. (3) a formula for design of the chain pillar size. Case studies were performed to check the validity of the formulae proposed. Comparison of the formulae proposed for the chain pillar design with other formulae were also performed.

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest was shown .prior to and during World War II in the winning of metallurgical-grade alumina from anorthosite, kaolin, siliceous bauxites, diasporic clays, and other aluminum-bearing ores. Laboratory and pilot-plant investigations were made on many of these ores by the Bureau of Mines, and a series of reports on them is being prepared. This report covers the tests made on the application of the lime-soda-sinter process to anorthosite, which is a mixture of albite, NaAlS1308, and anorthite, CaAl2Si208. Extensive deposits of anorthosite occur in the Laramie Range in Wyoming and extend into Colorado; other deposits are found in New York, with outcroppings appearing in Vermont, Maine, and Labrador.Anorthosito can not be treated by the Bayer process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina, because excessive losses of soda and alumina occur from the formation of sodium-aluminum silicate due to the large amount (50 percent) of silica in the ore.RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONSSmall-scale laboratory tests supplemented by pilot-plant runs have demonstrated that the alunina and soda occurring in the Wyoming anorthosite from the Laramie Range can be extracted and recovered satisfactorily by the lime-soda process. It has been shown that liquors containing approximately 95 gram of A1203 per liter can be consistently produced at Na20:A1203 ratios from 1.75 to 2.27, and that these liquors can readily be desilicated and carbonated to yield high-grade alumina trihydrate of quality comparable to that essential for cell-grade alumina. The optimum results were obtained with Na20:A1203 mol ratio of 1.03 and Ca0:Si02 ratio of 2.14 in the sinter when calcined at an average temperature of 2,444ºF. for 25 minutes."

[The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. For careful review and constructive criticism of the manuscript, the author is indebted to Hewitt Wilson. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.

1. It has been proposed that the addition of enough limestone to an open -hearth s lag to give a CaO-3P2O5 ratio of approximately 2-followed by SiO2 firing in an oxidizing atmosphere under the proper conditions of time and temperature will result in a clinker having a magnetic phase containing a preponderance of Mn, Fe, Al, and Mg as oxides and a nonmagnetic phase consisting for the most part of a phosphorus-containing dicalcium silicate. It has been postulated further that the metal oxide phase can be recovered by fine grinding and magnetic separation. These broad principles have been substantiated by numerous clinkering operations made in an electrically fired studio-type kiln, a batch rotary kiln, and a continuous rotary kiln and by magnetic separations made in a Davis -tube separator and a laboratory-size Jeffrey-Steffensen three -roll continuous separator. 2. Quenching the clinker after firing seems to improve its grindability. Microscopic examination of the ground clinker indicates .that the oxide phase grinds down at a somewhat faster rate than the silicate phase. 3. Very fine grinding is necessary to approach liberation, of the oxide phase from the silicate phase. Grinding to ininus-325-mesh, followed by magnetic separation, gave only a rougher concentrate, which had to be reground before final separation. 4. Although the manganese content of the final concentrate was higher, there was some evidence that manganese recovery was lower from a clinker made from a flush s lag than one made from a mixture of tap and flush slags. A possible explanation is that a clinker made from a mixture of slags has a higher iron content and hence is more magnetic and more easily separated.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers of Alabama, is making a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data from the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists of screen-sizing and sink-and-float data on the America and Pratt beds at Gorgas, Ala.SAMPLING AT THE MINESAlthough operations were discontinued in 1929, the accessible openings of the old Gorgas mines of the Southeastern Fuel Co. made possible the taking of samples from the America bed at three openings and from the Pratt bed at two openings. A sample was taken from the America bed at the Klondyke opening; a second was taken about 1 rile south of the Klondyke at the Musgrove America opening, and a third sample was taken about 1-1/2 miles south of the Musgrove-America at the Cricket Lodge opening. A sample was taken from the Pratt bed at Musgrove-Pratt No. 1, which is about 3/4 mile east of Musgrove-America, and a second sample was taken at Musgrove-Pratt No. 2, which is about 3/4 mile west of Musgrove-America. The samples ranged in weight from 1/2 ton to 1 ton and were equivalent to approximately a 2-ton sample from each bed. Figure 1 shows sections of the beds at the places sampled.In addition to the samples for washability study, a seam sample for analysis was taken at each of the places sampled. So as to give a representative seam sample for each of the two beds, these samples were combined in the laboratory in proportion to the thickness of the bed at the places sampled."

This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

The principal equipment in the catalyst plants at Ludwigshafen-Oppau was inspected and is presented in the form of flow sheets for the manufacture of four of the principal catalysts. The equipment is in many cases of special design rather than stock items that was built by the company and modified in the coarse of the growth of the high-pressure synthesis of hydrocarbons in Germany. It is believed that if the manufacture of catalysts were to be undertaken elsewhere, the selection of equipment for the operations involved could be made successfully from the guidance furnished by this rather general report. Five additional catalysts are described, also. II. CATALYST 5058 FROM FRESH TUNGSTIC ACID In a supply tank of about 2,000 liters capacity, 500 kg. of tungstic acid (W03.H2O) that contains about 92-93 percent of W03 is dissolved at 60-70° C. in 1,500 liters of mother liquor. The solution is-effected by stirring for about 1-1/2 hours. The mother liquor is obtained from a previous, lot of catalyst and is first adjusted to a concentration of 13 percent 1H3 by passing in gaseous ammonia. The solution is allowed to stand without stirring for 1 hour, then is pumped into the saturating vessel through a cloth filter (three-quarters hr. to one hr.). The saturator is purged with H2S and thereafter the solution, which has been cooled to about 75° C., is heated in an atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide with stirring to about 70° C. This charge is slowly cooled to 50°, and then more rapidly to about 20° C. (time of cooling 6-7 hours).

Some of the gases produced by permissible explosives on detonation are poisonous, and the probable hazard involved by the inhalation of carbon monoxide in the past has been evaluated from results of tests in the Bichel Gage. Tests have now been made in the Experimental Coal Mine of the Bureau of Mines at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the composition of the gases obtained under actual mining conditions for the purpose of comparing these, results with those found by the Bichel gage tests. Two permissible explosives were procured for these tests, one that produces a relatively low quantity of poisonous gases in the Bichel gage (24.8 liters per 1-1/2 pounds of explosive) and another that produces a relatively high quantity of poisonous gases (94.6 liters per 1-1/2 pounds). The first of these is designated by the Bureau of Mines as a class A4/ explosive and the other is designated a class B explosive. In comparison with Bichel-gage tests, the shooting of permissible explosives in a coal shot hole resulted in a large reduction in the quantity of carbon monoxide, the principal poisonous gas, which; in the mine tests, was only 22 percent of that found in Bichel-gage tests: The quantity of carbon monoxide from the class B explosive in Bichel-gage tests was 3.8 times larger than that from the class A explosive; in the coalmine tests the ratio was 4:1. The concentrations of carbon monoxide in the mine tests, as determined by analysis of the atmosphere in an enclosed space resulting from shooting 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class A explosive, were 0.03 and 0.06 percent, respectively, and the concentrations from 1-1/2-pound and 3-pound charges of the class B explosive were 0.10 and 0.24 percent.

This paper presents data on the limiting (minimum) oxygen concentration (LOC), in the presence of added N2, of methane (CH4), propane (C3H8), ethylene (C2H4), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H2), and some of their binary mixtures. It also addresses the issue of the flammable concentration (flammability) limits of these pure gases in air. The study is based on spark ignited explosions in large, spherical laboratory vessels (120-L and 20-L) using a 7% pressure-rise criterion for explosion propagation. The results of the study are compared with the older values which used long flammability tubes with a diameter >5 cm together with visual evidence of substantial upward propagation. They are also compared to results reported recently using a 12-L spherical flask with a visual flame propagation criterion. Finally, they are compared to results reported in Europe using more modest flammability criteria and smaller chambers. The findings reported here show excellent agreement between the 120-L and 12-L results, good agreement with the 20-L results, and reasonable agreement with the earlier flammability tube values for the lower flammability limits. They disagree, however, with the more conservative European values. These results and those from the 12-L experiments also feature lower LOCs than are given by traditional flammability tubes. A model for the LOCs of such fuel mixtures based on the Le Chatelier mixture rule for lower flammable limits is seen to reasonably fit the observed results on binary mixtures and can accommodate more complex mixtures as well. One such set of ternary mixtures containing CH4 and 1:1 CO:H2 is well fitted by the model.

Sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite are aluminum silicates having the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5) and are used in the ceramics industry for the manufacture of high-grade refractories. Natural sillimanite with added corundum or other alumina to just short of mullite (3Al2O3 -2SiO2) proportions is unequalled for jobs wherein strength at high temperatures, resistance to spalling, and resistance to slagging by acid slags are desired. High-grade porcelain ware also requires these minerals. At the same cost, sillimanite would be preferred for most uses, but the lack of any large source of sillimanite bas given economic preference to kyanite or andalusite for special refractories and high-grade porcelain wares. Sillimanite-bearing schists were observed in Spartanburg County, S. C.; as early as 1937 by D. Hoye Eargle, geologist with the U. S. Soil Conservation Service. The mineral was not identified until 1942, when Miss Jewell Glass, of the U. S. Geological Survey, examined several of the deposits. This identification was confirmed in 1943 by Dr. Laurence L. Smith, of the University of South Carolina, when he examined the Spartanburg County deposits and found numerous additional occurrences of sillimanite schist in Greenville County. Subsequent work by the Bureau of Mines and the South Carolina Geological Survey has been responsible for the location of additional sillimanite-rich schist deposits in Spartanburg County. Between October 1, 1948, and November 21, 1948, the Bureau of Mines conducted an exploratory diamond-drilling project on the John Gideon property in the southeastern section of Spartanburg County (fig. 1) and drilled a total of 681.7 feet in six holes. Drilling indicated that the deposit is relatively shallow, as no ore was cut below the zone of weathering.

Real2 gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.3% in the fourth quarter and at 2.5% for all of 1986, according to the most recent Department of Commerce estimates table 1). The 1986 GNP growth was the lowest since the recession in 1982, and was slightly below the estimate published in the last issue of Minerals and Materials. Barriers to greater economic growth in 1986 included the Federal budget deficit, the trade deficit, reduced energy-sector investment because of low oil prices, and uncertainty over changes in the Federal tax code.3 Major sectors of the economy responsible for the fourth-quarter growth included real Government purchases of goods and services, up $19.9 billion from the third-quarter level; real net exports, up $12.2 billion; real residential investment, up $3.0 billion; and nonresidential fixed investment, up $1.5 billion. The increase in Government purchases of goods and services was attributed to the S25.1 billion rise in net purchases of farm products by the Commodity Credit Corp-oration. Real personal consumption expenditures and inventory investment declined, however. Personal consumption expenditures declined primarily because of reduced motor vehicle purchases. Despite only modest growth during the fourth quarter, the economy improved significantly because of the narrowing of the trade deficit and growing employment (table 2) while maintaining low unemployment and inflation rates. Business sounded an optimistic note, with planned increases in current-dollar capital spending of 0.9% for 1987 compared with a 1.7% decrease in 1986. While it is primarily the nonmanufacturing industries that expect to increase investment from 1986 levels, some manufacturing industries are increasing investment by significant percentages as well, notably the steelmaking and nonferrous metals industries (table 3).

"INTRODUCTION Accurate determination of carbon monoxide in concentrations ranging from 0.2 to about 0.5 percent by volume is troublesome, because such concentrations are too high for some analytical methods and too low for others. Methods that are sensitive to concentrations of carbon monoxide considerably less than 0.2 percent are approaching their upper limit of usefulness when applied to the analysis of samples containing 0.2 percent or more of carbon monoxide, and it may be necessary to resort to dilution of the sample with a known proportion of air, or otherwise modifying the analytical technique, to obtain satisfactory results. Such methods include the determination of carbon monoxide by reduction of heated iodine pentoxide 3/4/5/ by the ""Pyrotannic acid"" method 6/ and by the so-called ""phosphomolybdic acid"" method. 7/ The use of conventional gas-analysis equipment, such as the Orsat type, in the determination of carbon monoxide in concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 percent is not desirable, as possible analytical errors may be of about the same magnitude, thus producing results of little quantitative value.For several years prior to this publication, the Gas Analysis Laboratory of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines has used a modification of the Haldane type 8/9/10/ gas-analysis apparatus for the determination, by absorption in a chemical reagent, of carbon monoxide in low concentrations that are not readily determined by other methods. The method is applicable also to the determination of higher concentrations. As the procedure has proved successful and has been adopted by others, this report was prepared to describe the method and to present results of analyses obtained with it."

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. [In the original Norris and Fay method for determining selenium, selenious acid is reduced by an excess of standard thicsulfate in accordance with the following reaction: H2Se03 + 4Na2S203 + 4HC1 = Na2SeS406 + Na2S406 + 4NaC1 + X20. (1) The excess thiosutfate is then back-titrated with standard iodine solution. The disadvantages of ouch a method are obvious. On an unknown sample, the quantity of thiosutfate required would be difficult to determine; a definite excess is required, but large back titrations would be undesirable. Inasmuch as thiosulfate is decomposed by acid, considerable error may be introduced in this method, the amount depending on the acidity, temperature, concentration of excess thiosulfate, duration of contact between thiosulfate and acid, and other factors, In a critical study of the Norris and Fay method, Coleman and McCrosky3/ show that the method is accurate to less than .1 part per thousand if the excess of this sulfate Is not greater than 5 ml. of 0.1 N solution (in 1.0 ml. of 0.x4 N sulfuric acid) whether the titration is made at 0° or 20°C. A greater excess produced unsatisfactory values at either temperature. Coleman and McCrosky regulated the excess thiosulfate by adding 5-ml. portions of thiosulfate solution followed by the addition of 1 to 3 drops of 2.5 percent potassium iodide in the presence of starch. If a starch-iodine blue color formed locally around the drops of potassium Iodide, the reduction of selenious acid was not complete. On stirring the solution, the local blue color fades and another 5-ml. portion of thiosulfate is added. When addition of potassium iodide fails to produce a local blue color, reduction of selenious acid is complete, and the excess thiosulfate is then back-titrated with standard Iodine solution. The number of equivalents involved in the reduction of selenious acid by either thiosulfate or iodide is the same, and therefore no correction need be made for the potassium iodide. This procedure is much better than the original Norris-Fay titration, but acidity and time would stilt be rather critical factors subject to variation with individual technique. Also, the method still requires the lose of two standard solutions, a rather undesirable factor from the standpoint of routine application.]

"Geologic materials emit transient noises when stressed /1/. The rate and pattern of these transient noises or acoustic emissions (A.E. hereafter) depend on the stages of deformation of the material /2/. It has been demonstrated that rock/coal fracture processes under stress consist of three distinctive stages--crack initiation, propagation and ultimate fracture--and that coalescence of numerous cracks leads to ultimate failure rather than the propagation of a single crack /2,3/. This paper presents an analysis of fracture formation in rock/coal specimens subjected to straight wedge indentors using A.E. technique.The effect of specimen geometry, wedge indentor angle, confining pressure, and material anisotropy on fracture type (tension, extension, and shear crack), fracture length, and fracture intensity were studied. Two types of material mainly Berea sandstone and Coal Berg No. 2 coal were used in this study. Prior to the experiment the mechanical properties of both sandstone and coal were determined using rectangular specimen (Figures 1 a) in standard compression tests and are given in Table 1. In this study cylindrical and rectangular specimens were first prepared to proper dimensions of 2 in. x 1.5 in. and 3 in. x 1.5 in. x 1.5 in. (5.08 cm x 3.81 cm and 7.62 cm x 3.81 cm x 3.81 cm), respectively and then instrumented with SR-4 strain gages as shown in Figure 1. The instrumented specimens were then tested under four distinct load boundary conditions as illustrated in Figure 2. During a typical experiment the instrumented specimen was placed in a specially designed loading jig (Figure 3) where a predetermined lateral pressure was applied mechanically to the specimen by adjusting the inner plate of the confining chamber via screw while monitoring strains in the specimen. Using rock/coal elastic constants and measured strains, a predeter¬mined lateral pressure was applied to the specimen. Then a vertical load was applied by the straight edge of a wedge indentor attached to the upper platen of the universal loading machine via ball and socket arrangement (Figure 4). The arrangement allowed uniform application of load in a straight line manner on the surface of the specimen. During the test a number of parameters namely strains, load and A.E. rates were recorded (Figures 5a-b)."

Studies on coal mine drainage sludge densification have led to the following conclusions: 1. Coal mine waters containing iron principally in the ferrous (Fea+) state can be treated by a modification of the commonly practiced lime neutralization process to yield a ferromagnetic sludge. The sludge, presumably composed in large part of a hydrated ferrosoferric oxide (Fe304.xH20), is much denser and faster settling than the ordinary "yellowboy" sludge obtained by lime neutralization and aeration at ambient temperatures. 2. The magnetic sludge preparation technique involves (quantitative) precipitation of iron (largely as Fe(OH)2) by the addition of hydrated lime to a pH of 8.5, separation of the resulting sludge from the aqueous phase, and heating of the sludge concentrate to at least 80 C (176 F), preferably higher, followed by mild aeration. 3. Magnesium, present as Mg2 in most coal mine drainage waters, inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition can be adequately minimized by keeping the pH below 9.6 during lime addition (thus avoiding the coprecipitation of Mg(OH)2) and by separating the sludge from the bulk of the aqueous phase before the heating step, as indicated in (2) above. 4. Aluminum, commonly present in coal mine drainage waters, also inhibits the formation of the magnetic sludge. This inhibition is of practical significance when the molar ratio of aluminum/total iron is greater than 0.18. Below this value, sludges are still appreciably magnetic, but are bulkier and slower settling than those obtained when aluminum is absent. Unlike magnesium inhibition, aluminum inhibition cannot be minimized by the scheme indicated above, since aluminum precipitates as Al(OH)3 near pH 4 and remains dispersed within the sludge. 5. The limitation on aluminum content is probably the most serious restriction affecting the feasibility of the magnetic sludge process as presently conceived. Nevertheless, a limited review of available water quality data has indicated that, in terms of relative acid and iron loadings, a significant number of major coal mine discharges in the eastern Ohio River basin may be amenable to treatment by a magnetic sludge process. 6. Data from tests on the use of magnetic seeding materials indicate that seeding did not enhance the formation of a magnetic sludge under the experimental conditions employed.

As part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests.
