The Bureau of Mines collected coal and coal waste aggregate material from two different mine sites to determine their strength characteristics for use in concrete. The concrete would be placed underground as support walls for ground control in adverse conditions or unique mining applications. A standard mix design was established for a "wet" mix using a water-to-cement (w/c) ratio of 1.0 to facilitate pumping into place. Later, material was collected from four more mine sites and used to make 2-by 2-by 2-ft test blocks with the same w/c ratio. A pull-out cone device and borehole shear tester were used to determine the in situ material strength of the test blocks. These techniques will provide a simple and quick way of determining support wall strength in an underground environment. Test results from the pullout cone de-vice showed a good correlation of 0.98 to test cylinder compressive strengths of the same mix. Results of the borehole shear tester were inconclusive.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an improved method for determining dissolved helium in water in the concentration range of 4.0 x 10-8 to 270 X 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O. The method is a modification of a previously reported method that was developed for analrzing surface and subsurface waters in geochemical survey work. Water samples are collected in SOD-cm stainless steel cylinders, and the dissolved gases in a sample are extracted into an evacuated cylinder of equal volume. After addition of 30 psig of nitrogen containing less than 2 ppb helium to the extracted gases, the resulting mixture is analyzed for helium using a helium-tuned mass spectrometer. The helium content of the water sample is determined from an empirical calibration that is established by analyzing standard solutions of helium in water. The accuracy of the method is ±7 pct for helium-in-water concentrations above 10 x 10-8 cm3 He (STP)/cm3 H2O.

The investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram was part of a program to investigate rare:earth alloys for use as nuclear reactor control materials. Investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram revealed a eutectic system with limited terminal solubilities and one peritectoid reaction. The eutectic composition occurs at about 82 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 1,220 ±5° C., extends from about 12 to 99+ percent gadolinium. A peritectoid isotherm occurs at 890 ±5° C. and extends from about 2 to 99+ percent gadolinium. The solubility of gadolinium in beta zirconium decreases from about 12 percent at 1,220 ±5° C. to about 2 percent at 890 ±5° C. The solubility of gadolinium in alpha zirconium decreases from approximately 5 percent at 890 ±5° C. to between 2 and 3 percent at 600° C. Vary little solubility of zirconium in gadolinium was indicated. An allotropic transformation of gadolinium was observed at 1,260 ±5° C. A change of the gadolinium transformation temperature on alloying with zirconium was not observed.

Hydrochloric acid , sulfuric acid , and chloridizing roast- water leaching methods for dissolution of cesium and rubidium from Maine , Canada , and Southern Rhodesia pollucite ores and their flotation products were investigated by small- scale tests . Optimum conditions were determined to be ( 1 ) for hydrochloric acid leaching , use 12.7 equivalents of 8.8 normal acid per equivalent of cesium in the sample and leach for 6 hours at 100 ° C ; ( 2 ) for sulfuric acid leaching , use 12.7 equivalents of 14.4 normal acid and leach for 2 hours at 120° C ; and (3 ) for chloridizing roast - water leaching , roast minus 200 - mesh ore, limestone , and calcium chloride in a ratio of 2 : 4 : 1 , respectively , for 1 hour at 900 ° C , and leach the calcine for 1 hour at 80 ° C with enough water to give 35 pct solids . Extractions of cesium from ores and flotation products containing over 20 pct cesium were in excess of 97 , 93 , and 96 pct for the hydrochloric acid , sulfuric acid , and chloridizing roast - water leach processes , respectively .

"INTRODUCTIONOrganics extractable from respirable diesel exhaust soot particles by organic solvents have been known for some time to be direct acting frameshift mutagens in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay (Huisingh, et al). Upon deposition in a pulmonary alveolus or respiratory bronchiole, respirable diesel soot particles will contact first the hypophase which is coated by and laden with surfactants. To model interactions of soot and pulmonary surfactant, we dispersed soots in vitro in the primary phospholipid pulmonary surfactant dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) (DPL) in physiological saline. We have shown that diesel soots dispersed in lecithin surfactant can express mutagenic activity, in the Ames assay system using S. typhimurium TA98, comparable to that expressed by equal amounts of soot extracted by dichloromethane/ dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/DMSO)(Wallace, et al, 1987). Here we report additional data on the same system using additional exhaust soots and also using two other phospholipids, dipalmitoyl glycerophosphoryl ethanolamine (DPPE), and dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA), with different ionic character hydrophilic moieties. A preliminary study of the surfactant dispersed soot in an eucaryotic cell test system also is reported.MATERIALS AND METHODSSoots D4 and D6 were collected at two different times as scrapings from the exhaust pipe of a diesel tractor-trailer immediately after the engine was stopped. Surfactant dispersions were made by ultrasonic probe sonicating 25 mg of commercially obtained DPL, DPPE, or DPPA into 1O ml of O.85% physiological sterile saline (PSS) for 10 min at 40 watts power. For surfactant dispersions, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of the appropriate phospholipid dispersion. Mixtures were sonicated by 40 watts sonicator probe for one min, then incubated in the sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature; the mixture was then incubated for one hour at 37C while being rotated continuously. Dilution series were made with saline. For solvent extraction, 2.5 mg soot was mixed into 2.5 ml of DCM and incubated in a sonicator water bath for 30 min at room temperature. The sample was then mixed with 2.7 ml DMSO, placed in a dry bath at 45C, and the DCM evaporated under a stream of nitrogen gas until 2.5 ml of liquid remained. Ames salmonella/microsome assay utilizing TA98 for frameshift mutation was used for mutagenicity testing, with and without S9 activation, as described by Ames et al (1975). Unfiltered sample extractions or dispersions were preincubated with tester cells for 90 min at 37C : 0.1 ml of sample was mixed with 0.5 ml of PSS, or of S9 mixture, and 0.1 ml of an overnight TA98 culture incubated samples were then added to 2 ml of top agar supplemented with biotin and a trace amount of histidine, and overlayed onto Vogel-Bonner minimal media plates. After 48 hours incubation at 37C, revertant colonies were counted. Solvent controls were DMSO, DPL, DPPE, DPPA, and saline. Positive controls were trinitrofluorenone (1 ug/plate), for samples not treated with S9, and 2-aminoanthracene for S9 treated samples (2.5 ug/plate). All samples were assayed in duplicate. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay was performed, following Lett, et al (1981), using V79 cells, of Chinese hamster pulmonary fibroblast origin. Stock diesel sample suspensions were made as 10 mg soot/ml DPL suspension, or 20 mg soot/ml in DMSO. Aliquots of these soot preparations were added to 15 ml of culture medium per sample flask to result in concentrations of 25, 50, and 75 ug soot/ml medium. After 12 hours incubation, 200 ul of 25 uM 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was added to each flask. After another 35 hours incubation, 200 ul of 10 ug/ml colcemid were added; and the cells were harvested three hours later. The Bureau of Mines made small-scale continuous tests and large-scale commercial plant tests of a calcareous fluorspar ore near Cave-In-Rock, Ill., to determine if the application of the lignin-fluoride process of fluorspar flotation would be industrially feasible for treatment of fluorspar ores, and also to compare the lignin-fluoride process with the quebracho process, which is the method currently used for concentrating calcareous fluorspar ores. The small-scale continuous tests yielded fluorspar concentrates analyzing 93.6 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 87.6 percent of the total fluorspar in the ore. In large-scale commercial plant tests, a fluorspar concentrate analyzing 93.3 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 78.0 percent was produced by the quebracho method. About 86.0 percent of the fluorspar was recovered in a metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrate from the lignin-fluoride circuit which analyzed 89.9 percent CaF2? with a much simpler flowsheet than that in the current commercial application.

Laboratory batch flotation tests were conducted on copper converter slags to evaluate the relative merits of recovering copper from slow-cooled versus water-quenched slags. Three slags containing 1.6, 5.0, and 6.6 percent copper were used. More than 90 percent of the copper was recovered in a rougher concentrate leaving a 0.2- to 0.3-percent copper tailings when treating slow-cooled slag. Lower recoveries and higher copper tailings ranging from 0,5 to 0.6 percent copper were obtained from quenched slag. Grindability studies were made on the respective heat-treated slags. Quenched slags proved more difficult to grind than slow-cooled slags. Cost studies showed that (1) the cost of slow cooling and crushing off-sets any advantages of higher copper recoveries from slow-cooled slag, and (2) water-quenched slag, which requires no crushing preparatory to grinding, could be treated more economically. Costs based on processing 1,000 tons of slag per day would be $1.85 per ton for quenched slag versus $2.37 per ton for slow-cooled slag.

"This paper contains some new thermodynamic data for silicates in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2siO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 and gives the results of a thermodynamic attack on the problems of stability end parageneses.. Although some data are lacking satisfactory agreement with mineralogical and petrological observations is indicated.The use of thermodynamic methods in mineralogy and petrology has been rather limited, because accurate thermal data, especially for the more complicated and more important rock-forming minerals, have been too scanty to permit any systematic application to problems in those fields. It is, nevertheless, a fascinating task to investigate to what extent the mode of occurrence and the stability relations of the minerals and mineral parageneses, as revealed by petrological and mineralogical observations, agree with predictions of thermodynamics. At the present stage of development calorimetric data are needed for most of the abundant silicate minerals.Measurement of the heats of solution in hydrofluoric acid of minerals in the series Mg2SiO4-Fe2SiO4 and MgSiO3-FeSiO3 affords a ready means of obtaining their heats of formation from the oxides. Combination of such data with entropy and heat-capacity values gives a means of obtaining free energies of formation from the oxides, which, in turn, are connected di¬rectly with stability and paragenoses.The two silicates of magnesium, Mg2SiO4 and MgSi03, occur as rock-forming constituents as forsterite and clinoenstatite or enstatite. The orthosilicate (forsterite) forms a series of isomorphic mixtures with ferrous-orthosilicate (fayalite). The continuity of this series, suggested by petrological observations, has boon proved experimentally by Bowon and Shairer.4/ The present work shows that those minerals constitute a series of perfect solid solutions - that is, a series of solid solutions for which heats of formation from the individual pure silicates, Mg2Si04 and Fe2SiO4, aro negligibly small.The metasilicates of magnesium and iron also form an isomorphic series. However, this series differs from the forstorito-fayalite series in the fact that the most iron-rich mixtures, between about En10Fs90 and pure Fs, appear to be unstable with respect to the paragenesis iron-rich olivine plus quartz. The supposed instability of pure FeSiO3 as a crystalline compound, at least at high and at moderate temperatures, is remarkable, as no crystal struc¬tural reason for such instability is apparent. The present work indicates, also, that these minerals form a perfect series of solid solutions and throws additional light on the instability question.In the following, the samples used in this investigation will be described. For each of the natural olivines and orthopyroxenes, with the exception of sample L, a chemical analysis was made of the purified and actually used fraction. All the analytical work was carried cut by Oleg v. Knorring, and the specific gravity determinations, by moans of a pycnomctcr, by Oiva Joensuu, both of the University of Helsinki, Finland. The determinations of the optical properties were made by Mrs. Toini Mikkola, of the Geological Survey of Finland."

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

Experimental work is report on the gasification of 90-percent through 200-mesh, strongly coking Sewickley-bed coal with oxygen and with steam in three temperature ranges, namely, 2,700° to 3,400° F., 1,600° to 2,000° F., and 230° to 250° F. Thirty-one runs have been made, during which 56,000 pounds of coal have been charged to the generator at feed rates of 200 to 450 pounds of coal per hour. The average results, not the optimum results, are given in the following tabulation:

A study of ion-exchange resin crosslinkage and eluant flow rate, resin-bed shape, and addition of separating ions to feed stock was undertaken to determine their effect on the separation efficiency of ion-exchange on bastna-site-rare-earth elements. Results show that 12-percent divinylbenzene (DVB) crosslinkage resin is detrimental to separation efficiency at flow rates over 2 to 5 ml./min./sq. cm.; whereas, separation with 4-percent DVB crosslinkage resin is relatively unaffected by flow rates between 2 and 10 m1./min./sq.cm.

The heats of formation at 298.15° K of calcium tungstate, calcium molybdate, and magnesium molybdate were determined by solution calorimetry. For the heats of formation from the elements, the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -402.4 ± 0.5 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -369.5 ± 0.3 kcal/mole, -334.8 ± 0.2 kcal/mole. For the heats of formation from the oxides J the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -49.2 ± 0.4 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -39.6 ± 0.1 kcal/mole, and magnesium molybdate, -12.9 [ ] 0.1 kcal/mole.

Laboratory batch and semicontinuous studies showed the feasibility of using methylene bromide and trichloroethylene in heavy liquid cyclone concentration of a Nevada brucite ore. Cyclone tests of minus 20- plus 200-mesh material at specific gravities of 2.42 and 2.44 recovered 71.6 to 74.9 percent of the MgO at grades of 95.5 and 95.4, respectively. Neither increasing the feed pulp density from 5 to 25 percent solids, nor varying feed pressures from 25 to 60 psig had any apparent effect on the heavy liquid separation.

A part of the liquidus of the magnesium-zirconium system was determined by chemical analysis of suction samples taken from the melt in the approximate temperature range of 850° to 1,450° C. The melt was prepared in a furnace pressurized with an inert gas. The average zirconium value in weight-percent of the liquidus composition at each sampling temperature was 0.96 at 867° C, 1.40 at 1,062° C, 2.05 at 1,262° C, and 2.96 at 1,402° C. The equilibrium solid phase was zirconium.

Optimum autoclaving conditions were determined for separation of iron and manganese values from pregnant leach liquor produced in extracting manganese from low-grade umber are. The umber was leached with a synthetic anolyte similar to a recycle solution, used in manganese electrolysis cell operations, that had been renewed with ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. The equipment used and results obtained are presented for the several conditions employed. The kinetics of the separation were studied. Rate equations were derived for the formation of solid ammonium-manganese sulfate, (NH4)2 Mn2 (S04)3.

The preparation characteristics of the coals of Buchanan County, Va., are described in this Bureau of Mines report. Twenty-one samples ,,,ere collected from 9 coalbeds in the county. Of these samples 13 were of metallurgical quality as received, and 8 required some upgrading to provide acceptable products. In general, the coals were of low to medium ash and sulfur content, and ranked as medium-to high-volatile bituminous. In 1963, production in the county was in excess of 13 million tons, of which 2.2 million tons were mechanically cleaned.

Magnesia spinel (MgO.Al203) recovered from dusting slags in the system MgO.Al203-2Ca0.SiO2 is in the form of single crystals most of which will pass 35-mash. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the concentrates as a refractory raw material. Three specific types of refractory bricks were studied: (1) dense, (2) lightweight bubble, and (3) insulating. Test specimens ware fabricated 1 by dry pressing, fired to 1,675° C., and tested by procedures common to the industry. The concentrates produced a refractor, having satisfactory density and mechanical strength; however, spinal is sensitive to thermal shock and the possibility of producing a spall-resistant brick using aggregate of such small grain-size must be considered remote. Lightweight refractorias fabricated of spinel bubbles were the most promising of the types tested. They were 30 percent lighter in sight than the dense refractory, their mechanical strength was good, and definite superiority in thermal shock resistance was indicated.

The effects of certain process variables on the grain size, grain type, and microhardness of vapor-deposited tungsten were established, and the near-optimum parameters and the efficacy for the vapor deposition process were determined. No significant change in the grain size or microstructure resulted from ultrasonic vibration of the substrate during deposition, from variations in the hydrogen (H2) to tungsten hexafluoride (WF6) ratio, or from small increases in reaction-chamber pressure. Near-optimum conditions were continuous deposition at atmospheric pressure, a deposition rate of 2-mils thickness/square inch of substrate area/hour, a temperature of 5500 C, and a hydrogen to WF6 ratio of 4:1. The addition, individually, of about 2 volume-percent of butane, 24 volume-percent of carbon dioxide, or 4 volume-percent of propane to the hydrogen and WF6 mixture produced deposits with the finest grain size for each gas. A corresponding increase in microhardness accompanied the decrease in grain size. The addition of gases did not alter the columnar microstructure found in vapor-deposited tungsten.

A NEW record was set for helium shipment in 1962 for the 13th successive year. For the first time since 1949, the production of helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines plants was less than in the previous year. The Bureau shipped 599.5 million cubic feet, 9 percent more than the 1961 volume, and produced 680.9 million cubic feet-a decrease of 6 percent from the record set in 1961. The Bureau added 77.2 million cubic feet to the volume stored for future use. Of the total 524.6 million cubic feet in storage, 522.4 million cubic feet is accumulated excess production from Bureau of Mines plants. The remaining 2.2 million cubic feet was purchased during 1962 from industry under the helium conservation program. The first two of five private plants began production in December to recover helium for conservation storage and ultimate use. A 425-mile pipeline system to transport helium from the five private plants to the Cliffside field was constructed by the Bureau at a cost of about $8 million.
