Seventy-four human factors research and development projects were identified for possible Bureau funding. The projects were based on (1) literature surveys, (2) reviews of accident statistics and reports, (3) interviews with equipment manufacturers, MSHA, and Bureau personnel, and (4) site visits to 26 mines. The projects are divided into the following categories: those related to (1) mobile equipment, (2) maintenance shops and areas, (3) plants and mills, (4) organizational factors, (5) safety programs/data, and (6) training. The projects were rated by industry and MSHA people in terms of benefit to the industry. Projects were placed into three categories of priority. The highest priority contained 25 projects with 26 in Category 2, and 23 projects in the lowest category.

As part of an interegency agreement with the Energy Research end Development Administration to develop unproved refractory materials for use in coal gasification processes, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature to determine the effect of steam, H2, CO, and CH4 as well as the alkali metal oxides K2O and Na2O on refractory materials. Emphasis was given to the performance of high-alumina castable and fired refractories to conditions expected in coal gasification processes. Approximately 85 references were reviewed with 40 cited in the text. The literature was found to contain little data directly applicable to the selection of refractory lining materials suitable for use under the conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas compositions expected in second generation coal gasification reactors.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, utilizing the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

An important factor in the design and operation of a lignite-gasification plant is knowledge of the thermal requirements. These not only vary with different-size plants but also with the operating conditions for a plant of given capacity. Thermal data have been collected since 1945 from a commercial-scale lignite-gasification pilot plant operated by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak. The description and operation of this plant and a study of the gas-composition data have already been described in previous reports (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).2) / This investigation was made to review the thermal data taken in tests and to correlate them in terms of the fraction of undecomposed steam and the H2:CO ratio.

The strike of the Canadian asbestos miners entered its seventh month with increasing signs of early termination. Both unions are in the midst of heavy negotiations with management, and an optimistic industry source predicted that work would resume by October 1. Recession recovery in some segments of the asbestos manufacturing industry is being impeded by lack of fibers, CADMIUM - On September 9, St. Joe Minerals Corp. reduced the price of cadmium metal to $2.75 per pound. The producer price bad been uniformly quoted at $3.00 per pound since June 26, 1975. Subsequently, Amax, Inc. and National Zinc Co. reduced their prices to $2.50 per pound. By mid-September all five U.S. cadmium producers were marketing the metal at $2.50 per pound.

The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

This report by the Federal Bureau of Mines describes the carbonizing properties of coals from the principal beds in Boone County , W. Va . Results are given for samples of coals from No. 5 Block , Stockton - Lewiston , Coalburg , Winifrede , Chilton , Hernshaw , Cedar Grove , Alma , and No. 2 Gas beds . Boone County coals rank as high -volatile A bituminous . Eighteen of the 21 samples tested contained from 3.3 to 7.9 percent ash and 16 of the samples contained from 0.6 to 0.9 percent sulfur . Volatilization of cesium from pollucite ore was investigated as an initial step in the production of purified cesium metal or cesium salts. High recovery of cesium and rubidium as chloride sublimates was accomplished by 2-hour roasts in a tube furnace using charges containing 1 part ore, 2 parts limestone, and 0.23 part calcium chloride. Recoveries of cesium in the sublimate product were 89.1, 92.9, and 95.2 pct, respectively, using 1,100° C and vacuum, 1,250° C with an air sweep, and 1,250° C without an air sweep. Most of the lithium, sodium, and potassium sublimed with the cesium and rubidium, but virtually none of the calcium, aluminum, and silicon in the charges was volatilized.

Burundi, a small central African republic located between Tanzania and Zaire, remained essentially a nation of small family farms in 1978-79 with approximately 95% of the population engaged in subsistance agriculture. Coffee and tea continued as the nation's major export commodities. Mineral exports, small tonnages of cassiterite, wolframite and bastnasite, accounted for an estimated 3% of total exports in 1978 and 2% in 1979, or $2 million2 in both years. Burundi's major mineral imports in 1978-79 were cement, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products. Abnormal weather conditions, a drop in world coffee prices in 1978, and the conflict in neighboring Tanzania and Uganda in late 1978 and early 1979 combined to re-strict economic growth in Burundi during 1978-79. The gross domestic product (GDP) posted a gain of 6.7% in real terms for 1978 and an estimated 2.5% for 1979 which was significantly less than the 13.7% recorded in 1977, a time of high world coffee prices. The manufacturing and construction sectors were hard hit in 1979 by the conflict between Burundi's eastern neighbors because of transport disruptions which made building materials and manufacturing inputs almost unobtainable.

Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

The Bureau of Mines investigated chlorination of domestic ilmenites in a fluidized coke bed at temperatures of 950° to 1,150° C. Objectives were to develop an effective process for producing TiC14 suitable for TiO2 pigment and to reduce pollution by collecting and treating waste byproduct chlorides. The reactor for these tests was a 10.2-cm-diam quartz tube heated externally by electrical resistance heaters. It contained coke beds of from 35.6 to 82.5 cm in depth that were fluidized by 13 to 25 l/min of chlorine. Ilmenite concentrate powders were introduced at the bottom of the fluid-bed reactor, using the chlorine gas stream as a carrier. Test results showed that greater than 90 pct of the ilmenite reacted at optimum conditions and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 99 pct of stoichiometric. A temperature-controlled cyclone was used to remove high-boiling-point chlorides such as MnCl2, MgCl2, and FeCl2, and also collected fine unreacted ilmenite and coke dust. Impure TiC14 and FeC13 were separated by collecting the, iron chloride in a condenser con-trolled at 200° C. Titanium tetrachloride vapor was cleaned by passage-through a salt-column filter followed by condensation in water-cooled and refrigerated condensers. Liquid TiC14 was purified further by well-known industrial methods to meet specifications for pigment-grade chloride. Integrated tests were conducted in which chlorine, produced by dechlorination of FeC13 with oxygen, was recycled and used directly in a fluidized-bed chlorinator.

[Boron is an element whose metallurgical possibilities never have been investigated thoroughly, probably because of the difficulties experienced in the preparation of elemental boron and its intermetallic compounds. The southwestern United States contain the world's s largest deposits of boron minerals. In general, the mineral is readily available, and mining costs are not excessive. The most important boron mineral of commerce is borax (sodium tetraborate) however, there are large deposits of colemanite (a mineral having the composition represented by 2CaO 3B2O3 5H2O) in Clark County, Nov. This material was worked in times past by converting it to sodium tetraborate. In recent years the deposits have laid idle because of a mire readily available source of borax in the old lake beds of California.]

The productive capacity of natural-gasoline and cycling plants in the United States on January 1, 1958, was 48.8 million gallons per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 2.4 million gallons per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 7.5 million gallons per day. The major increase in operating capacity occurred in Texas and New Mexico. In New Mexico, capacity increased 43 percent. The total number of plants decreased from 600 on January 1, 1956, to 584 on January 1, 1958. The number of operating plants decreased from 571 to 558. Five new plants were completed in Colorado, increasing the number of operating plants from 7 to 12.

The Bureau of Mines measured heat capacities of alpha and beta spodumene (LiAlSi2O5) and of beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) over the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K were found to be 30.9 ± 0.2 cal/deg mole for alpha spodumene, 36.9 ± 0.3 cal/deg mole for beta spodumene, and 24.8±0.2 cal/deg mole for beta eucryptite. High-temperature heat content measurements above 298° K were conducted for the same compounds. Measurements were made to 1,150° K for alpha spodumene, 1,600° K for beta spodumene, and 1,470° K for beta eucryptite. Tables of heats and free energies of formation are given from the elements and from the constituent oxides.

As part of a project to develop refractory metal alloys suitable for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation-hardening techniques to columbium and tantalum alloys. Thirty-three alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, strength, and oxidation resistance. Three alloys had tensile strengths near 40,000 psi at 1,200° C: Cb-1N-5W-5V-10Hf (No.4), Cb-15Hf-5W-0.5B (No. 31), and Cb-15Hf-SW-IB (No. 32). Oxidation resistance of the high-strength alloys was good. Alloy4 gained only 34 mg/cm2 at 1,200° C, and 21 mg/cm2 at 1,000° C in 2 hours. Hot forming was done without any protection from oxidation.
