Federal Bureau of Mines studies showed that some organic amine hydrochlorides can be used as dehydrating agents for producing anhydrous magnesium chloride from hydrates and brines. Laboratory-scale tests showed that double salts are formed by reacting 35 percent magnesium chloride brine or spray-dried magnesium chloride with pyridine hydrochloride. Heating decomposed these double salts to anhydrous magnesium chloride and recycle pyridine hydrochloride. Pyridine hydrochloride also chlorinated any magnesium oxide in the spray-dried magnesium chloride. The anhydrous magnesium chloride obtained by the method described contained less than 0.8 percent oxygen. More than 98 percent of the organic amine hydrochloride was recovered.

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of “topping off” the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

It has long been known that ventilation is a cost-effective method to lower respirable dust concentrations in all types of mining applications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has been working on a number of different research techniques that use ventilation as a critical component to lower respirable dust levels at surface and metal/nonmetal operations in the United States. This article presents five such research efforts. The first research area discusses how improving the ventilation flow patterns in an iron ore mill facility lowered respirable dust concentrations by 31 pct throughout the primary grinding area. The second research area examines how respirable dust levels were lowered at a dimensional stone shop by using air cleaning units suspended from the ceiling. A third area discusses how improvements in ventilation at underground limestone mines lowered respirable dust concentrations. The fourth area examines how improvements in dust filtration and pressurization systems significantly impacted the air quality in enclosed cabs of surface mining equipment. The last area presents a newly developed clothes cleaning technique. This technique uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker?s clothing in an enclosed booth, which confines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. These research areas represent an array of different control technologies to lower respirable dust concentrations. Ventilation is an integral part of these control technologies.

The majority of fatalities that occur in road construction work zones in the United States involve a worker being struck by a piece of construction equipment or other vehicle. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Transportation, is evaluating methods to decrease these accidents. One such method uses devices that assist equipment operators in monitoring blind areas around the equipment to prevent collisions with workers on foot or other objects. Several cameras and sensor systems are available for this application, and a study was conducted to evaluate these systems on various trucks used in road construction and maintenance. Tests were conducted using sanding trucks during the winter months, which allowed researchers to investigate the effectiveness and limitations of various technologies under the most extreme conditions. Tests were also conducted using dump trucks during the warmer months to study the effectiveness of the systems in highway work zones. Results show that many difficulties arise when using camera and sensor systems in cold, snowy climates. And, while the operation of these systems is more reliable during the warmer months, challenges still exist in using them on equipment in crowded work areas.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolanda No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a posy-tine identification of the bed at Yolande No. o will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 18° As fax as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in. this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its' use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

INJURY and employment figures for nonmetal mines and mills in 1959 are presented in this publication. Data for nonmetal mines are presented separately from those for nonmetal mills. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal mining industry each year requesting their voluntary submission of injury experience and employment data. The voluntary response to these requests has contributed greatly toward the promotion of safety in the industry, and every effort has been made to make the information as complete as possible.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

"After many years of safety activity in the United States in one form or another it becomes increasingly evident to those in contact with safety work that to achieve continuous good results in accident prevention there must be an aggressive organization behind the safety movement at each mine with fairly definite plan and policy. A study of the methods used by various companies and the results they have attained will be of value to the common cause of safety promotion.A study has been made of the safety records of the Menominee iron range in the Lake Superior district, and of data from the county mine inspector's report. Several companies on this iron range that have attained a certain measure of success in their work of accident prevention have given data, and a summary of their safety methods is presented.The Menominee iron range of Michigan lies in the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering on Wisconsin. It consists of two main. divisions--the West Menominee Range, situated in Iron County in the vicinity of Iron River and Crystal Palls, and the East Menominee range situated in Dickinson County in the neighborhood or iron Mountain, Mich. The mines about Iron River and Crystal Falls are peculiarly subject to fires in a carbonaceous, sulphur-bearing black slate which appears in the footwall. This gives considerable trouble because fires in this material start from spontaneous heating. The methods of mining are top slicing and open stoping, working on benches along the sides of the stopes. The character of the ground varies from medium Soft ore to relatively hard ore which permits open stoping. Approximately one-third of the operating mines are equipped with a fan for main mechanical ventilation. The remainder are ventilated by natural draft. The East Menominee range is the older, top slicing having been used there for a number of years, and the timber mats have boon well developed. In common with all districts, some companies pay more attention to safety than others, although, those which do riot have the best records do pay some attention to safety.During the past three years the annual production per man employed has remained about constant, but in many mines a general decrease is shown in the accident record. The variation in the results attained can be ascribed mainly to the earnestness with which accident-prevention work is pursued, essentially regardless of the method of mining used. This is shown to be generally true, because the record indicates a steady decrease in one mine with an active safety department, while in adjoining mines with the same kind of ground and method of mining but where not such intensive attention has been paid to safety work, the accident record is high."

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating technologies that could be used to detect objects, small vehicles, and pedestrian workers that may be in the blind areas of haulage equipment used in mining and construction. A detection system that warns the equipment operator that there is an obstacle nearby could prevent collisions and save many lives each year. One popular technology for collision warning systems is radar. Several different types of radar have been tested in the laboratory and on mining equipment. Early in the study, questions arose concerning the best way to test radar systems. Many factors affect the performance of radar, including the size, shape, and composition of the object that is to be detected; the height of the radar antenna(s); and the relative motion of the radar system and/or object. This report discusses several different test procedures and test targets and recommends methods to determine how effective a radar system will be in detecting a person near heavy equipment.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. A method is presented for creating realistic numerical models for practical coal mine ground control. The method includes procedures to collect the necessary mechanical input parameters from a geologic core log, procedures to set up a model and procedures to interpret calculation results. The input parameters come from a detailed geologic core log and extensive point load tests of estimate rock layer strength. A suite of material property input parameters is proposed which allow the user to go from core log to numerical model inputs. Rock bolt anchorage properties are also linked to the material properties of each geologic layer in the model. Following this procedure leads to very realistic calculations of the rock failure process and rock support system behavior. These calculations in turn enable realistic comparison of the effectiveness of alternative rock support systems.
