External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureaus of Mines on a fluorite deposit, near Glenwood, N. Mex. Results of wagon drilling, crosscutting, and test pitting are given, together with results of metallurgical tests made upon samples of the ore. Mining and treatment methods are suggested.C. H. Johnson, Bureau of Mines engineer, examined the deposit in August 1942. H. E. Rothrock, of the Federal Geological Survey, completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the fall of 1942. As a result of these brief investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves, and exploratory work was recommended. G. A. ApelI, also of the Bureau of Mines, made a topographic and underground survey and report on the mine in March and April 1944. A wagon drill, air compressor, and other equipment and supplies were delivered to the property on May 19 to 23, 1944. Drilling began under the direction of the author on May 25, 1944, and was completed in October 1944. The results of drilling and. sampling form the basis of this report."

The Star mine, near Neihart, Cascade County, Mont., has been in continuous operation since the construction of a 50-ton bulk flotation mill in 1939. The mine was examined by G. N. Bennett, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in November 1942. At that time the life of the operation appeared to be limited and a program of crosscutting and core drilling were recommended. The program had as its objective the investigation of a promising undeveloped area lying west of the Star vein and, if possible, the development of enough reserves in this area to insure continuous operation during the war emergency. Development of additional reserves would then justify necessary changes in the mill in order to eliminate the heavy penalties imposed for excess zinc in the bulk concentrates. The Bureau of Mines work began in February 1944 and was completed in September 1944. The project was started by Wilder R. Brinton and continued by Thomas W. Oster, mining engineers in the Bureau's Montana district office. Beneficiation tests on are and concentrates were made after completion of the underground work. This report presents the factual data obtained during all phases of the Bureau's investigation.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. This part of the final report treats some problems related to coal mine carrier frequency communication systems using the trolley wire/track transmission line. This work was undertaken for a brief period of time during the summer of 1972 to help understand, quantify, and improve some of the trolley wire carrier system behavior observed and/or predicted. Calculations and estimates of transmission line characteristic impedance, inductance and capacitance per unit length, mine motor loading effects, parallel line effects, and connection impedances are presented in Chapter I. Chapter II treats the design of r-f isolators for reducing the undesired and troublesome r-f loading that mine motors present to the trolley transmission line. "INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

This Bureau of Mines publication describes a passive personal sampling device for N02 in air, developed by the New York University Medical Center under Bureau Grant G0133066. The sampler has been successfully demonstrated in the field and in the laboratory. In corroborative laboratory trials the agreement with reference method is excellent. The overall accuracy is approximately ±5 pct of reading to a precision of about ±l pct. All evidence indicates that these samplers should indicate the time-weighted-average N02 concentration to the above accuracy and precision equally well in the field since effects of wind velocity and relative humidity are negligible and the effects of temperature are about 0.1 pct per °F. The duration of exposure and the approximate temperature are the only data that need to be collected in the field. A two-step analysis procedure in field or service laboratory is then used to obtain the total cumulated exposure to N02 in parts per million-hours (ppm times hours), which can be converted to the time-weighted-average concentration of N02 in ppm by dividing cumulated exposure by the duration of the exposure.

"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Design a model health and safety program which, when implemented, can improve mine safety by reducing occupational injuries and accidents. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a model program which identifies the elements essential to the effectiveness of health and safety programs designed for mining operations, and is readily adaptable to all types of sizes of mines. The model program primarily provides training on loss control and accident investigation and technical assistance with health and safety problems. In order to assess the effectiveness of the program, it was tested at both a coal and gold mining operation. Monthly statistics were generated to reflect the number of occupational injuries and accidents, and the severity of injuries (as measured by the number of work days lost during recovery). Observations were made of employees performing a large number of randomly selected jobs in order to estimate. the proportion of the workforce that was working in the presence of one or more of three types of safety deficiencies: Type A-individual job performance deficiencies which could be corrected by the employee alone I e.g., an employee is seen not wearing a seatbelt.

"Previous Work:As outlined in previous papers* ond clays for graphite crucibles have been tested at the plants of the Detroit Lubricator Co., and the Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills, Detroit, Mich.These tests indicated that there were two American clays (Missouri pot clay and Illinois kaolin) that tested better than the Klingenberg (German) clay. Dorset (English) ball clay was tenth in the list.Making the Crucibles:After it had been determined that American clays can be used successfully in graphite crucible manufacture and service, the next step in the investigation was to determine the value of American graphites as compared to the foreign, These final tests were carried out at the plant of the Detroit Lubricator Co., through the courtesy of Mr. G. B. Duffield. The crucibles, as previously. were made at the plant of the Vesuvius Crucible Co., Swissvale, Penna., from a formula compiled by the Bureau of Mines and under the supervision of Bureau engineers.The graphites to be tested were given an initial to indicate their source. The number of crucibles made and shipped are set forth in Table 1."

A novel method of extinguishing a mine fire in a stowed or gob-filled area by employing liquid carbon dioxide under high pressure eras used recently with success at the President (Prasident) coal mine, Bochum, Germany, as reported by P. Cabolet in Gluckauf (Apr. 24, 1937, p. 393) The use of carbon dioxide gas as a fire-fighting agent in surface plants and in ships is now general practice in the United. States, but when it has been tried for extinguishing fires in mines in large areas more or less confined by stoppings it has not been successful. Examples of the latter method of attempting to fight mine fires are given in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 229, Fifty-Nine Coal-Mine Fires; How They Were Fought and That They Teach, by G. S. Rice, J. VT. Paul, and 14. VT. von Bernewitz (1927). The reason for its nonsuccess may be either that the stoppings are not tight or that the roof and pillars are more or less fissured and enough air passes into the area to sustain a slow fire, whether of spontaneous origin or produced by gas explosion or other source of ignition.

The U.S. Department of Labor?s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),through its winter alert program, warns U.S. mine operators and miners at underground coal mines of workplace hazards that can arise when the weather turns colder. MSHA records indicate that, historically, most explosions in underground coal mines occur during winter months. ?The changes in weather can increase the risk of fatal accidents,? says David G. Dye, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. ?Each miner and mine operator must take individual responsibility to eliminate the kinds of hazards that can cause fatal accidents in the workplace. Safety is not the other guy?s job?safety begins with you.? In fact, MSHA?s slogan for this year?s campaign is ?Winter Alert Starts Now and Safety Begins with YOU.? This message reminds miners and mine operators of the risks of colder weather and educates them about helping to reduce risks and hazards. ?Safety requires the joint effort of both management and labor,? Dye says. ?Everyone at the mine site must see safety as an individual value and act to ensure a safe working environment.?

"INTRODUCTION The use of wet drilling with adequate ventilation has largely controlled production of dust in drilling rock; however, in some operations, such as shaft sinking and modern tunnel driving, when each of a number of drills is operating in a small cross-sectional area, it is at times difficult to ventilate well enough to keep the dust concentration within desired limits.Some chemical compounds, known as wetting agents, when added to water in small quantities reduce the interfacial tension and make it possible for the solution to wet dust particles more effectively than water alone.This report presents results of tests on the effectiveness of two wetting solutions in reducing the amount of dust produced by wet drilling in basalt.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe tests were conducted at the Bureau's Mount Weather Testing Adit, Mount Weathe, Va. "A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature, and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68 °C and 141 °C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system, and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature, and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."
