This report describes results of tests on the desilication of solutions resulting from the leaching of lime-soda sinters. Desilication was accomplished by heating the solutions in an autoclave. A liquor relatively free of silica was obtained after 30 minutes of heating at 200 p.s.i.g. in the presence of lime. The addition of lime improved desilication, but the rate and efficiency of desilication was effected by the quality of lime used. The optimum quantity of lime for effective desilication was about 6 grams per liter. A lesser quantity gave poorer desilication, and a greater quantity increased the alumina loss without improving desilication. The alumina loss was approximately proportional to the lime added. A complex structure, called artificial noselite in this report, was the only silica bearing compound detected in the desilication precipitate. Other compounds present were Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide), CaCO3 (calcium carbonate), and Ca [A1(OH)6]2 (hydrated tricalcium aluminate). Sodium carbonate in the leach liquor retarded the formation of the calcium aluminate; hence it decreased the alumina lost to the precipitate. The extraction of alumina from aluminum silicate materials by the limestone soda-sinter process has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines for many years. The process consists of the following major operations: Blending the aluminum silicate with limestone and soda ash in such proportions that dicalcium silicate and sodium aluminate are formed on sintering; leaching the sinter in a carbonated caustic solution to extract the soluble alumina; purifying the leach liquor by the precipitation of soluble silica (this precipitate is designated desilication precipitate in this paper); precipitating alumina trihydrate from the purified liquors by carbonating with carbon dioxide gas; and calcining the trihydrate to alumina. (being shipped as bailast in ocean freighters). Within the last 10 years it has become more economical to use local sands, and there has been a general shift from the Belgian sand. Deposits of purer sand were treated and used for 'some time: but the suprly became limited, and means were sought to beneficiate the more bountiful subpay-f impure beach sands. These sands are composed of, 50 percent feldspar and 50 percent quartz, with small amounts of iron- bearing minerals, The most objectionable impurities in these West coast sands are the oxides of iron and aluminum. The Del Monte (Calif.) beach sand contains about 0.13 percent FeqQg and about 11.0 percent Aig03 (the latter being furnished by the large amount of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of feldspar present.) For the manufacture of flint-glass containers the maximuni quantities of these two impurities permitted in the sand are 0.05 percent F20 and 6 to 8 percent A1203.. The Fe0g occurs in the sand as follows: Traces of iron-bearing minerais resistant to weathering, ferruginous clay stains on the sand grains, and iron minerais not visible and possibly in solid solution or as colloidal incisions in the grains of feidspar or quartz. A good part of the iron in the sand is present in the traces of iron-bearing minerals, biotite, ilmenite, garnet, monazite; and hornblende. Biotite is present in larger quantities than the others. Samples of quartz, were freed of iron-bearing minerais by the use of heavy liquid (sp.gr. 2.70), leached with boiling HCI and SnCl2. Under a microscope a few apparently clean quartz grains were selected, and Fe203 was determined spectrographically to be 0.03 percent. Several growth chamber and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the germination behavior of plant species on mine spoils and plant growth responses to nutrients on spoils and topsoils. Experiments were conducted to study the germination potential of some native and introduced species under various conditions. The seeds of green needlegrass, side oats grama, thickspike wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, birdsfoot trefoil and emerald crownvetch were less tolerant, whereas those of alkali sacaton. durar hard fescue, slender wheatgrass, yellow sweetclover and alfalfa were most tolerant to the sodic mine spoil conditions. Addition of leonardite improved the germination potential of some of the poor genninators. Slender wheatgrass and yellow sweetclover were used as test plants to study the fertility status and productivity potential of stockpiled topsoils and spoils collected from Center. Glenharold and South Beulah of North Dakota. The topsoils were neither saline nor sodic but low in N and P. The spoils were neutral to alkaline with SAIL of 12-32, EC of 1.8-5.5 mmhos/cm, Olsen&apos;s P< µ4g/g, and total N <0.07%. Application of N and P together to the topsoils increased the yield of wheatgrass and sweetclover by 88% and 70% of their respective maximum yields, whereas near maximum yields were obtained for both the species by the same treatments to the spoils. The average yields on topsoils were higher than the yields on spoils. The concentrations of major nutrients were higher in plants grown on topsoil, whereas the opposite was true with the concentrations of Mn, Zn, and Cu. Growth chamber experiments were also conducted to study the growth responses of alfalfa, oats and slender wheat grass by the application of Mn and Zn to a sodic coal mine spoil which was previously used for pot culture experiments. Significant growth responses to Mn and Zn were observed in alfalfa but not in oats or slender wheatgrass. Fertilizing the spoil with Mn along with NPK increased the yield of alfalfa to 85% and with Mn + Zn to 99%. Growth responses and plant composition results of this study confirm that the application of major nutrients to spoils can accentuate Zn and Mn deficiencies in some plants.

SULFUR poisoning of iron catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was investigated at the Bureau of Mines, because synthesis gas produced from coal contains sulfur compounds. Tests of two typical iron catalysts with synthesis gas containing known concentrations of H2S were made to determine catalyst life as a function of sulfur concentration to ascertain the type of gas purification required. Fixed beds of activated steel turnings and a fused iron oxide catalyst were investigated in sulfur poisoning tests at 21.4 atmospheres with IH2+100 gas containing 6.9, 23, or 69 mg S as H2S per cubic meter (0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 gr per 100 cu. ft.). In tests of reduced catalysts at constant temperatures, more than 80 percent of the activity was lost when 0.5 mg S/g Fe was introduced. Poisoning of nitrided or carbided fused iron oxide catalysts to a given extent required more than twice as much sulfur than for the corresponding reduced catalyst. When the synthesis temperature was increased to compensate for loss in activity, tests of the fused iron oxide catalysts at constant productivity could be continued for 19 to 98 days. The tests were terminated by clogging of the reactor, presumably caused by carbon deposition. One objective of the present work was to determine if synthesis gas, purified by the Bureau of Mines&apos; hot-potassium carbonate process for removing H2S, OOS, and CO2, is suitable for synthesis on iron catalysts. The sulfur content of the gas purified by tills process is in the range of concentrations used in the present work. In constant-productivity tests of nitrided fused iron oxide catalysts with synthesis gas containing 6.9 mg S/m3, catalyst lives are nearly long enough for serious consideration of tills mode of operation. However, factors relating to selectivity and stability of the catalyst indicate that this type of operation is impractical for a commercial process. On this basis additional gas purification, such as iron oxide boxes following a hot potassium carbonate scrubber, is desirable.

Beneficiation studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on three samples of low- grade chromite - bearing material from the Stillwater complex of Montana . The objective of the study was to develop methods for recovering chromite from low- grade materials to improve the domestic reserve situation . Samples were obtained from the three largest deposits in the district , Mouat , Benbow , and Gish . The chromic oxide ( Cr₂ 0 ) content of the ore and of the chromite was about the same in each of the samples . The major gangue constituents ranged from clean olivine in the Mouat sample to such altered minerals as serpentine and talc in the Benbow and Gish samples . Tabling , flotation , high- tension electrostatic separation , and combinations of processes were applied to each ore . Treatment of the Mouat sample ( 9.95 percent Cr₂ 0 ) by high- tension electrostatic separation , a combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation , and tabling with middling retreatment resulted in concentrates that graded 42.8 , 42.0 , and 40.7 percent Cr₂03 at chromium recoveries of 85 , 86 , and 84 percent , respectively . Other techniques were less selective . 2 The Benbow sample ( 7.75 percent Cr₂0 ) responded most selectively to tabling with middling retreatment and a combination of tabling and hightension electrostatic separation to produce concentrates of 40.1 and 39.5 percent Cr₂g with each process having a chromium 2 recovery of 69 percent . Response of the Gish sample ( 8.04 percent Cr₂03 ) to the various concentration techniques was about the same as that of the Benbow sample , but in general , somewhat less selective . A combination of tabling and high- tension electrostatic separation resulted in a concentrate that contained 71 percent The Mouat mine was reopened in 1953 when the American Chrome Co. contracted with the Federal Government to produce 900,000 tons of chromite concentrate . The ore , averaging 20.2 percent Cr₂03 , was treated by tabling to produce a 38.5 - percent Cr₂ O concentrate.

Considerable current interest is evident[l,2] in the use of transient electromagnetic methods for subsurface remote sensing. A transient method is discussed which uses a periodic video-type pulse containing a wide frequency range. A video pulse is used as an interrogating signal both for "target" identification and detection for relatively short depth (c 20 meters) applications in soil and soft rock media. If the medium is favorable, e.g., hard rock, greater depth applications appear to be feasible. The same procedures would be applicable for deep geological exploration but would require a substantial reduction in frequency and increase in target size. It should be noted that video pulse generators with 35 kv peak voltage and nanoseconds base widths are now within the state-of-the-art, thus significant power over broad spectral ranges is possible. In the design of a video pulse sounding system, 5 main problem areas can be identified; 1 ) selection of the pulse shape or spectral content of the video pulse, 2) design of a radiating structure which effectively couples such a pulse into the medium, 3) isolation of the radiating and receiving mechanisms, 4) realistically accounting for the dispersion and attentuation of the medium and the air-medium interface, and 5) interpretation or processing of the received signal waveform. Each of these problem areas will be discussed and illustrated with experimental and/or theoretical results. The Video Pulse Selection of the proper video pulse signal is dictated by 3 considerations, the maximum desired depth of penetration, the attenuation of the medium and the required resolution and size of the target. For a lossy medium, penetration and resolution are clearly at cross purposes and a compromise is necessary. The exact nature of the compromise is dictated by the application, but the spectrum of the video pulse should not contain any frequencies higher than the predicted cut-off, i.e., that frequency which is attenuated to the threshold level of the receiver. As a practical matter, it may be necessary to select 1 or 2 video pulses reasonably suited

The following additional studies are recommended: 1. Future development of the magnetic sludge process should involve optimization of the process variables; these include stirring rate, sludge heating time, aeration rate, method of preliminary sludge dewatering, and the effects of magnetic separation for final sludge processing. In addition, the matter of amenability of coal mine waters to treatment should be considered more thoroughly by means of a more comprehensive literature review as well as actual tests on mine drainage samples. 2. The technique of sludge freezing should be explored further. Emphasis should be given to conservation of energy in the process, and the filtration characteristics of the resulting sludges should be evaluated. 3. Further studies should be conducted on the feasibility of the CO2-addition approach to mine drainage sludge densification. The filtration characteristics of product sludges should be evaluated, and the possibility of recovering and recycling the residual alkalinity of the sludge, either directly as CaCO3 or as CaO plus CO2 after calcination, should also be explored further. 4. Efforts should be made to develop cost data for the conceptual processes involving magnetic sludge formation, sludge freezing, and C02 pretreatment, with the purpose of selecting at least one of these processes for further testing at a field site. 5. The use of inexpensive waste materials (e.g. fly ash, "red dog," slag) as sludge additives, possibly in conjunction with coagulant aids, should be considered further. Results of the present studies have indicated that such materials, employed in relatively large amounts, increase the density and enhance the filterability of sludges from lime neutralization of coal mine drainage. The use of pulverized blast furnace slag in this regard appears particularly promising, and studies should be made to ascertain its availability, relative cost, residual alkalinity, and behavior as an additive in conventional mine drainage treatment processes involving lime neutralization and aeration.

A job analysis is a written list of the tasks associated with doing a particular job. In drilling, describing the steps associated with adding rod to the drill steel would be an example of a task associated with the job. How to hammer casing or fish a lost drill bit out of a hole would also be job tasks. Develop a written list of job tasks. Ask drillers in your company if the tasks listed are correct and accurately reflect how to perform the job. While each driller may do the job a little differently, some tried?and?true methods are required to perform certain tasks safely and correctly. You may find a separate analysis is needed for different drilling jobs (e.g., a residential well or a monitoring well). Also remember to include the tasks of both the helper and the driller.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to determine if phosphogypsum, a waste material from the processing of phosphate rock, contains hazardous toxic materials as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and whether leaching of these toxic materials and radium may occur. Samples of the phosphogypsum stockpiled material were evaluated using the EPA extraction procedure, atomic absorption, neutron activation, x-ray diffraction, and chemical and physical means. Radiological tests performed used both the germanium-lithium and emanation methods. The data show that the phosphogypsum stockpiles are not hazardous toxic waste as defined by EPA criteria. Trace elements and radium are not leached from the phosphogypsum stockpiles. Absorption of trace elements and radium by phosphogypsum is the major reason for their not being leached. The standard error of measurement of radium concentrations was 4.7 pCi/g.

Mineral resources, or a potential for their discovery, occur at 34 localities in the Glacier Peak Wilderness and adjacent areas of the north Cascade Range of Washington (see plate). Eighteen of the mineral deposits are in the established Wilderness, four are in or partly in contiguous RARE II (Roadless Area Review and Evaluation) lands recommended by the Forest Service for addition to the Wilderness (A, D and G6031.), three are in adjacent RARE II lands excluded from wilderness consideration, and nine are in nearby roaded areas excluded from the RARE II inventory. Mineral commodities that might be produced from the Wilderness and recommended additions are gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, limestone (marble), pumice, and volcanic cinders. Mineral production from adjacent lands might include most of these commodities, plus antimony, decorative stone, pyrite, silica, and garnet.

An ethanolamine purification unit for removing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from Firscher-Tropsch synthesis gas was installed at the Bureau of Mines synthetic liquid fuels demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo. The unit was a surplus Radford Girbotol unit from the Missouri Ordnance Works modified for a capacity of 90,000 std. cu. ft per hour of synthesis gas at 450 p.s.i.g., operating pressure. The hydrogen sulfide loading of the feed gas was specified at 500 grains per 100 cu. Ft. The unit was designed by the Girdler Corp. and installed by the Koppers Co. Initial operations were conducted far 11 days in May 1951. Thereafter 7 additional runs were made, varying lo duration from 8 to 54 days. The last run was terminated on May 29, 1953, the total time the Plant wars in operation being 219 days.

The Welcome Creek Wilderness has small, dispersed gold placers. Pockets in the 25.5 million yd3 (19.5 million m3) of alluvium along Welcome and Rock Creeks have as much as $5.61 gold/yd3 ($7.34/m3) at $500/troy oz ($16.08/g). All the alluvium averages 20.1 cents gold/yd3 (26.3 cents/m3). Because of the low average gold content large-scale placer mining would not be economically feasible. Small-scale selective pocket mining, however, may be profitable. The alluvium along the streams in the Wilderness has little apparent potential for production of sand, gravel, or stone because alternate sources are closer to markets. The four lode prospects known within the Wilderness appear to have low mineral potential. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

Minimize failures or inefficiency in the operation of in situ mining wells. Approach The proper design, construction and development of wells are important to any in situ leaching operation. To permit cost-effective production from an underground ore body by leaching it in place, many wells are normally installed. Construction and maintenance costs increase with the number of wells, and poor construction and maintenance procedures result in production losses and negative environmental impacts, To minimize these losses and impacts, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the optimum in situ well construction and operating procedures for the minerals industry. Factors considered during the investigation included drilling equipment and procedures; types of well casing and grouting; completion methods, e.g, screening or perforation; and system maintenance. The data collected were used to prepare a manual that offers guidelines

This is the fourth and final article in a series that discusses underground fire-fighting preparedness. As with the previous three articles, it is based on interviews with 214 miners at 7 underground coal mines (referred to as Mines ?A? through ?G?) conducted by researchers of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s(NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Center[Vaught et al. 1996]. The first article presented an overview of the study conducted by NIOSH on mine fire response preparedness and provided a general perspective on underground mine fires. The second article discussed miners? preparedness to evacuate a fire and their experience with incipient fires. The third article described miners? experiences in fighting underground mine fires and presented their perceptions of training and readiness for fire-fighting. This final article in the series offers suggestions to improve mine fire-fighting preparedness.

Chapman-Jouguet detonation calculations were carried out for pentaerythri-tol tetranitrate (PETN), TNT, and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) explosives using the compressibility form of an equation of state of hard spheres based upon Percus-Yevick (PY) theory, and a chemical equilibrium detonation code called TIGER. Similar calculations were also carried out with the Becker-Kistiakowsky-Wilson (BKW) equation of state. For PETN, the BKW equation gives somewhat better agreement with experimental values of detonation velocity and pressure. However, in terms of experimental temperatures and concentrations of the minor product species (NO), the predictions of the PY equation are shown to be more satisfactory. Similar comparisons of experimental and theoretical results for TNT and AN-FO indicate that the PY equation has general utility in predicting the detonation properties of condensed explosives at moderate loading densities (Po < 1.3 g/cm3).

"Soon after the armistice, an investigation was conducted by the writer on the use of liquid oxygen for explosive purposes in Germany, so far as the conditions of such investigation wore permitted at the time. The results of this inquiry were published in Technical Paper 243, entitled ""Development of Liquid Oxygen Explosives during the War.""Recently, through the courtesy of Dr. C. L. Parsons, former chief chemist of the Bureau, who was visiting Germany, and Mr. Chester L. Benson, of the American Expeditionary Forces in Germany, data was obtained from the Deutsche Oxhydric A. G., Surth near Cologne, (one of the principal manufacturers of liquid oxygen installation) concerning the number of plants which bad been installed in Germany during the period following the armistice. A new concept was proposed for a personal warning device for use by miners who may be exposed to health hazards from inhalation of alpha-emitting radionuclides, especially radon-222 and its short-lived daughters. Two successive prototype models of the proposed instrument were designed, fabricated and tested. The Personal Alpha Alarm, in its final form, weighs less than 90 g (3 ounces), and can easily he mounted on a miner&apos;s safety cap. It is powered r, by electricity drawn from the cap-lamp battery, and consumes less than 100 n A at 4VDC. It is entirely passive and has no moving parts. Alpha-radiation originating in the air around it is detected by a 5 cm2-area semiconductor-type sensor that was developed especially for this purpose. The presence of alpharadiation in the air is communicated to the wearer by means of a small flashing light-a light-emitting diode-clipped to the brim of the safety cap. When the intensity of alpha-radiation exceeds a predetermined threshold, the flashing mode changes to a continuous illumination, thus providing an alarm signal to the wearer. Because the detector senses all alpha-emitters in the air, including 222Rn, it is not able to measure Working Levels accurately. For its intended purpose, however, which is to give a timely warning of excessive levels (several times the normal control level) of radon and/or radon daughters in an individual&apos;s air environment, the Personal Alpha Alarm is expected to be a useful instrument.

[Frequent accidents in the transportation and. handling off petroleum and its more volatile products, serve as a reminder that this is indeed a hazardous undertaking and should always be conducted with due caution. On October 4, 1920, vapors in the held of the British tanks steamer G. R, Crowe became ignited and, caused an explosion which, it is reported, killed 5 men, injured. 40 others and endangered the lives of some 300 more. On November 10, 1920 the Morgan, Line freighter El Mundo was almost totally sot destroyed in New York harbor by fire caused by an explosion of gases in a fuel-oil tank. These two disastrous explosions emu emphasize the ever- present danger attending the use of petroleum products. This is also shown by the frequent occurrence of minor fires and explosions, caused by careless handling of baseline, which result in loss of life or serious injury to railroad employees, to oil-tank drivers, and to individuals in various walls of life. Statistics indicate that the lighter cuts of petroleum products, because of fire hazards, are dangerous, and are so considered by the railroad and other transportation companies. According o the Bureau of Explosives (Bar-eau of Explosives Report No. 13 p. 7) during 1919 transportation of gasoline in the United States resulted in 172 accidents, causing 2 deaths and 31 injuries, and a property loss to the extent of $687,966. Among the causes of ignition, an open light in the vicinity of the container stands out most prominently.]
