The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1987 was $446.6 million, an increase over that of 1986 and the first increase in 3 years. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite and ferroalloys; third in bentonite, crushed dolomite, crushed marble, and fire clay; and fourth in masonry cement. Trends and Developments.-Employment in the minerals industry remained relatively low for the second year even though the overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.9% by December. Employment in mining and primary metals dropped about 10% and 2%, respectively.

[Gypsum is one of the most important nonmetallic c minerals, as is indicated by the fact that the United States consumed approximately 3,500,000 tons of natural and calcined gypsum in 1937. The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. The properties of coal from the Pittsburgh seam, procured from the Bruceton and Federal No. 2 Mines were found to be similar. Strength and stiffness properties of Beehive Mine coal were determined and the material found to be isotropic. Mechanical, index and geologic properties of roof and floor coal measure rocks from Beehive mines were measured and correlated. Analytic formulations are given for coal creep under uniaxial loading, while triaxial creep is being investigated. Results of testing of coal model structures are compared with predictions from using several material models.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.

Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. 1. In the United States, the industrial application of centrifugal force for separating phase constituents has been confined almost entirely to aqueous systems at room temperature. This paper presents results for experimental tests on the use of centrifugal force for separating the liquid and solid phases in molten nonferrous alloys. 2. The development and use of a small centrifuge for treating molten metals is described. The centrifugal apparatus was, in essence, a 3-inch diameter spinner pot, which revolved, within -a gas -fired furnace, at speeds up to 3,000 r.p.m.

Aminopolyacetic acid chelating agents were added to separatory-funnel-scale solvent-extraction systems to determine the effect on separating rare-earth elements. Average values for separation factors between adjacent elements obtained with Primene JM-T2 increase 36 percent when EDTA is added to the aqueous phase. Adding HEDTA or DCTA also improves separation factors for certain rare-earth elements. Percentage of extraction and the separation factors exhibit marked sensitivity to concentrations of amine, chelating agent, and hydrogen ion. The chelating agents improved separation in Primene JM-T, BHDA, and Primene 81-R extraction systems.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

The Bureau of Mines Solid Waste Program is directed toward three main areas of research: (1) Extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) recovery of mineral and metal values from wastes generated in the industrial extraction, processing, and utilization of raw materials and mineral-base products; and (3) upgrading and utilization of automotive scrap. The Bureau also has a contract and grant program which supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of personnel in the proper management of mineral- and metal-based solid wastes.

The heats of the glass-crystal transformation of nepheline (Na0.7794K0.2206AlSiO4) and wollastonite (CaSiO3) and the heat of formation of nepheline at 298.15° K were determined by solution calorimetry. For the glass-crystal transformations, the heat values were -9.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole for nepheline and -8.1 ± 0.2 kcal/mole for wollastonite. The heat of formation of nepheline was -34.8 ± 0.6 kcal/mole from the oxides and -501.0 ± 0.5 kcal/mole from the elements.

The heats of formation of goethite, ferrous vanadate, and manganese molybdate at 298.15° K were determined by solution calorimetry. For formation from the elements, the heat values were -133.7 ±0.3 kcal/mole for goethite, -453.8 ±0.5 kcal/mole for ferrous vanadate, and -284.8 ±0.2 kcal/mole for manganese molybdate. For formation from the oxides, the heat values were -0.9 ±0.1 kca1/mole for goethite, -19.4 ±0.3 kca1/mole for ferrous vanadate, and -14.6 ±O.l kcal/mole for manganese molybdate.
