During 1953-55, 31,105 miles of pipe for transporting crude petroleum and refined products was laid in the United States, a total slightly below that of the prior 3-year period, according to data compiled by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. The added mileage consisted of 22,571 miles of new pipe, representing about 2,163,807 tons of steel, plus 8,534 miles of secondhand pipe, equivalent to about 419,849 additional tons of steel. During the 3-year period, 13,069 miles of pipe was taken up. By January 1, 1956, the Nation had 188,540 miles of pipeline, an 11-percent gain over the 1952 total of 170,504 miles. The greater use of larger diameter pipelines indicated in recent surveys has continued, as the mileage for sizes 12 inches and over increased from 13 percent of the total mileage at the close of 1952 to 16 percent 3 years later. Crude-oil trunklines 12 inches and over in diameter gained 24 percent during 1953-55, and these larger lines represented 30 percent of the total mileage compared with 25 percent at the close of 1952. Furthermore, the mileage for crude-oil lines less than 12 inches in diameter declined 2 percent and made up only 70 percent of the 1955 total against 75 percent n the previous survey. Product Lines 8 inches and over increased 43 percent from 1952 through 1955 and composed 70 percent of the total mileage compared with 66 percent in 1952.

A study was made of the feasibility of using washery refuse in the manufacture of lightweight aggregate for building materials . Preliminary caking and burning tests showed that the refuse could be converted into lightweight aggregate but that refuse passing a No. 14 U.S. Standard screen could not be used without additional processing . The aggregate was prepared by pelletizing the refuse and burning out the carbonaceous material on a chain- grate in a refractory - lined furnace . A small stationary - grate furnace was used to study the process variables involved and establish optimum ignition and combustion conditions . Maximum ignition rates were obtained at air rates of approximately 200 lb per sq ft hr , but air rates of 450 or higher were required in the burnout period to obtain temperatures high enough to sinter the ash . The data obtained from this unit were used as a guide in the operation of the chain- grate furnace . In the chain - grate furnace , satisfactory results were obtained by using primary air rates of 200 lb per sq ft hr in the ignition zone and 500 lb per sq ft hr in the burnout zone . The ignition- zone air was preheated to 500 ° F , but the air for burnout was not preheated . A total of 2-1/2 tons of aggregate was prepared in this unit and made into experimental block . A commercial development based upon the results of this study yielded a product which met the ASTM specifications C 130-42 for lightweight aggregate , and blocks made from the aggregate were of good color , durable , and light - inweight .

Extractive metallurgy techniques currently employed to recover silver from primary ores and secondary scrap were reviewed and evaluated to identify and delineate metallurgical problems whose resolution would increase the supply of silver from domestic materials. The survey revealed that practically all primary silver is recovered by froth flotation concentration of various types of ores, followed by smelting and refining of the separate lead, copper, and zinc concentrates. Silver losses during the complex processing are, with rare exception, inconsequential. Furthermore, any silver production gain from base metal ores, which contribute about two-thirds of the total primary silver, is directly dependent on improvement in the market for the base metals. Statistical data on new and old silver scrap are wholly inadequate to make reliable conclusions about scrap processing problems and the possibility of increasing the recovery of silver from the many forms of secondary silverbearing materials. The available information indicates (1) that efficient silver reclamation practices are employed by the larger users of silver, and (2) that recovery of additional secondary silver involves solution of problems of collection rather than of processing. Several possibilities exist for limited increases in silver production from primary ores by improvement in metallurgical practices. Specifically, research is needed to (1) solve the problem of recovering silver from the copper ores of the Copper Range district, Michigan; and (2) devise economically feasible methods for recovery of silver from presently marginal or submarginal ores that because of grade, location, and frequently complex nature cannot presently be exploited by conventional techniques.

This project investigates the behavior of blast waves from the detonation of high explosives in an underground mine. A series of explosive tests was conducted in the underground and surface facilities at the Bureau of Mines' Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the potentially dangerous effects of blast waves produced by open shooting, blown out holes, or accidental detonations of explosives. Shots of C4 and TNT were fired at the dead end of a 6 ft high by 20 ft wide entry, at the intersection of two entries, and on the surface. C4 and TNT were chosen for this research because they exhibit very consistent performance. Behavior of the blast wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of distance from the explosive detonation. For both explosives, C4 and TNT, peak pressure decay with travel down the entry was inversely proportional to distance to the 0.9 power. When comparing pressure measurements at 200 versus 100 feet from the detonation; at 200 feet the pressure would be 1/2 0.9 or 54 percent of that measured at 100 feet. By comparison, peak pressure for a surface shot exhibits a decay with distance to the -1.6 power, yielding a pressure at 200 feet 1/2 16 or 33 percent of that measured at 100 feet. This result confirms that the blast wave from detonation of an explosive in an underground mine maintains its force for a greater distance than would be the case on the surface. "INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. There are no reliable records of production or value of minerals produced.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the most effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they take the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A general analytical solution of the effect of an inclined contact separating two media of differing electrical properties on a normally incident plane electromagnetic field has been given (Geyer, 1972). These solutions for the electromagnetic response at any observation point P(r, [u]) are given in the form of inverse Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms. Two modes of excitation are considered: (1) case where current density flows across strike of the contact separating the media of differing electrical properties (only Er , E [u] , and Hx differ from zero) and (2) case where current density flows along-strike (only Hr , H [u] , and Ex differ from zero). The electromagnetic fields in the frequency range of interest and for the rock conductivities under consideration are quasi-static in nature so that to a first-order approximation the horizontal magnetic field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity in resistivity for case (1) above, and so that the tangential derivative of the horizontal electric field at the surface of the earth is constant and continuous across the discrete discontinuity for case (2) above. Of course, it is well known that where large horizontal gradients in conductivity exist, there also exists large anomalous components of the vertical magnetic field (Weaver, 1963). The recognition of such anomalous components and their magnitudes due to the presence of lateral resistivity changes in the overburden becomes very important in any wavetilt type measurement which may be used to locate a miner. When the lateral change in resistivity becomes quite large, the integral solutions (expressed as Lebedev-Kontorovich transforms) simplify considerably and allow ready numerical evaluation. Examples of the amplitude and phase responses of the radial electric, horizontal electric, and vertical magnetic field in the vicinity of the contrast in resistivity are shown in Figures 2, 3, and 4. Of particular significance is the fact that the anomalous vertical magnetic field is three orders of magnitude larger near the contact than far from the contact. This fact implies that where large resistivity contrasts do occur in the rocks overlying mine workings, that significant errors may be present in wavetilt measurements as used above for location criteria! Another observation insofar as the anomalous vertical magnetic field is concerned is the linear variation of phase as one proceeds away from strike in induction number (increased distance or frequency). For a pulse-excited communications system this phenomena would have a bearing on where the zero crossings would occur (i.e., 'pulse breadth') in the transient coupling between any given source-receiver configuration and at any given receiver site.

In 2007, a total of 278 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 44.6% (n=124) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=36; 12.9%) and copper ore (n=35; 12.6%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=45; 16.2%), followed by Alaska (n=28; 10.1%).

An independent contractor is defined by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as ?any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine.? Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines. Companies In 2007, a total of 2,999 contracting companies reported employment at coal mines to MSHA, or 35.7% of all independent contracting companies.

The great expansion of production of aluminum for war purposes has aroused some concern regarding the available supply of carbon suitable for making carbon electrodes required in the electrolytic aluminum process. Approximately three-quarters of a pound of carbon electrode is consumed for each pound of aluminum produced. 5 Because of its small amount of impurities and its suitable physical characteristics, calcined petroleum coke is the standard material used by the aluminum industry for making electrodes As it may be necessary to use some substitute materials, the possibility of using coke made from coal has been considered. Besides this possible use, information concerning the source of low-ash coals is of general interest. Specifications of the aluminum industry for calcined petroleum coke suitable for the manufacture of electrodes are very stringent in regard to allowable impurities. In one such specification the maximum allowable ash is 1.0 percent; the maximum allowable content of iron (as Fe) is 0.06 percent and that of silicon (as Si) is 0.08 percent; the maximum for cal- cium (as Ca) and for sodium (as Na) is 0.12 percent for each, but the two combined may not exceed 0.12 percent; maximum allowable sulfur is 2.0 per- cent. The presence of barium, nickel, chromium, manganese, cobalt, or vanadium is objectionable, and only extremely small amounts are allowed. In regard to physical properties, the coke is required to be so thoroughly calcined that it has a real density of at least 2.02.

This publication contains highlights of a 4-hour lecture and demonstration by the Bureau of Mines on the fire and explosion hazards of flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing materials, corrosive liquids, and compressed gases. The authors first presented this material as part of a 2-week course given to officers and enlisted men at the U.S. Coast Guard's Dangerous-Cargo Handling School, established at Fort Eustis, Va., in 1959. The Bureau was asked to present the lecture and demonstration because of the extensive experience of its researchers in handling certain harardous commodities.

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

Systematic leakage surveys of natural-gas transmission lines not only aid in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show direct financial returns of large magnitude. 1. Such surveys reveal the actual leakage from the lines, and indicate repairs to be made in order, to eliminate unnecessary waste. 2. Tests on lines, after repairs are made, show the actual saving that has been accomplished. 3. Tests on newly constructed lines reveal the presence of leakage that should be eliminated before the lines are put into service.

This report presents the methods and results performed pursuant to the U. S. Bureau of Mines contract entitled "Noise Abatement in Mining Machinery," Number H0122054. 2.1 Background Until the Congress of the United States created and passed Public Law 91-173, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, there were no directly-applicable standards for noise exposure for underground coal miners.1 Section 206 of this law, approved December 30, 1969, provided for standards of noise to be applicable to each coal mine. The work described was conducted to develop standards for the application of wire rope clips on wire rope. These standards include optimum number of clips and clip nut torques for wire rope sizes 1/4 through 2-1/4 inches, when used for forming an eye attachment in wire rope. Wire rope test specimens with clip attachments were load tested on tensile testing machines to determine an effective combination of clip nut torques and number of clips for each size of wire rope to develop efficiencies above 90 percent of the catalog ultimate rope strength.

It is hoped that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases. Yawkey waterflood property, Berea sand, Griffithsville oilfield, Duval District, Lincoln County, W. Va. (fig. 2).

An investigation was made of pressure pulses produced by unconfined explosive blasts in underground openings. Four tests were made with TNT or modified amatol charges ranging in weight from 60 to 2,000 pounds; each test involved either single or multiple charges. Pressure-time profiles were obtained using mechanical self-recording pressure gages. The cube-root scaling law for peak pressure was found to be valid within about 1 tunnel diameter; at greater distances, the pressures obtained along direct paths were generally higher than this scaling law would indicate.

The effectiveness of a loader-mounted fan on diesel vehicles combined with natural convection for ventilation of a dead heading (the patented Janelid system) was investigated experimentally. The results were obtained using CO2 as a tracer gas in a 1/4 scale model heading. Buoyant forces were scaled to establish similarity with full scale. For a loader moving in a typical load-haul-dump cycle, the loader-mounted fan reduced the tracer gas concentration by 26 percent compared with a reduction of 32 percent for a jet fan of four times the flow capacity.

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 42 samples from 37 fields in the major producing areas in Mexico are presented in this report. Table 1 includes information on the source and general characteristics of each sample. Table 2 gives a summary of analytical and computed data.
